92.9 The Game Atlanta Braves Insider and From The Diamond Host Grant McAuley talks about how special opening day or the home opener still is after years covering the game, Spencer Strider really looking like this season could place him among the games true elite's, the quick start to the year for Marcell Ozuna, the addition of Sandy Leon, the Oakland A's headed towards Sacramento, and if there is pressure on Max Fried to have a strong start after his first outing.
Despite ominous forecasts, the Braves and White Sox were able to play two of the three originally scheduled games in Chicago. David was on hand for both games and wisely planned his trip home based upon the impending weather for the series finale. He & Eric discuss why it seems the Braves rarely if ever start the season at home even though they have significantly better weather than most other cities this time of year. (08:30) David was very impressed by the White Sox starting pitcher Garrett Crochet, who earned the win on Tuesday night. (11:30) Jarred Kelenic had a strong start to the season as he went 6 for 11 on the road trip after having a shaky Spring Training. The Braves acquired Kelenic in a December trade with the Mariners. (17:00) Reynaldo Lopez showed off an array of pitches in his first start sine September of 2021 on Tuesday evening. He lasted six frames and had a no decision in the 3-2 defeat in Game 2 of the series. (20:00) The Braves had a winning road trip despite not receiving a lot of production from Ronald Acuña Jr. He only had one hit in Chicago, but did knock in a run. The team's batting average in the five game stretch was .328. (29:00) Tyler Matzek, returning from Tommy John surgery, struck out the side in Monday afternoon's 9-0 victory. He also had a scoreless outing in his lone appearance in Philadelphia. Hear a recap of some of the other bullpen members and how they have pitched so far. (35:00) During the road trip Sean Murphy landed on the IL due to an oblique injury. Atlanta signed veteran catcher Sandy Leon to a minor league deal in order to add depth while he is out. The current catchers on the active roster are Travis d'Arnaud and Chadwick Tromp. (43:00) Friday night is the Braves home opener vs. Arizona and on Monday it is the 50th Anniversary of Hank Aaron's 715th career HR. Learn more about your ad choices. The Minnesota Twins sweep the Kansas City Royals in a three-game series at Target Field. David and Dan are reunited and discuss the great pitching performances by Joe Ryan and Sonny Gray, as well as the scoreless innings put together by the bullpen. The boys discuss Miranda's continued great play and Caleb Thielbar's effort in high leverage positions in games 1 and 2. David doesn't miss an opportunity to question Tommy Watkins base coaching and Dan remains head of the Nick Gordon fan club. Dan is befuddled by Rocco's limited use of Cole Sands, and wants to know if Sandy Leon is currently the best catcher on the Twins' roster. The guys consider the importance of the recently updated top 100 prospect list and make their Puckett's Picks for the upcoming Rangers series. Amid a flurry of trade deadline deals, the Twins find themselves flush with pitchers and short on healthy outfielders. This led to the long-awaited call-up of Jake Cave, who will arguably play more games for the Twins the rest of the way than Miguel Sano will. Go figure. Dan and Hoges -- filling in for David -- discuss the Twins' additions of Tyler Mahle, Jorge Lopez and Michael Fulmer, plus the instantly impactful add of backup catcher Sandy Leon. Yet even after winning two of three from the Tigers, the Twins are clinging to a small lead over the Guardians and White Sox, and while Dan and Hoges agree that the Twins are the best team in the division, they recognize that Minnesota is still very much in a pennant race. They also discuss the rise of Jose Miranda and look around the league at the busy trade deadline, which sets up yet another Twins' matchup against Whit Merrifield this weekend against the Blue Jays. Things have been bleak of late. I talk about some of the negativity on the show, which parts have been far, and which parts I might owe an apology for. We join this game in the seventh as Cleveland is getting shellacked by a Detroit Tigers offense that has been historically bad this year. I talk about the podcast and answer some user questions and respond to comments. Next, we talk about the game tonight. It was a brutal affair that saw no one reach base more than once and every pitcher struggle outside of the great Sandy Leon. Listen, it was not a fun game, but it had its fun moments. I talk about the state of the roster and what I would do if I was in charge. There are a lot of strong pieces in place, but there are some easy ways to make things better. We also again talk about how starting pitching is still the biggest weakness for this team outside of catcher. We continue to focus on Pablo Lopez and his 2.5 years of control as the pitcher who would be of greatest use for the Guardians due to his style, success, and years of control. It's Game 79 of the 2022 Season and the Cleveland Guardians lose another one to the Detroit Tigers 11-4. On today's show we're going on a huge rant about the question marks on this team and when we are getting answers. Plus Quantrill leaving cutters in the middle of the plate, Sandy Leon leading the team in throwing strikes, the Tigers BABIP over the series, and naming our MVP on the day (nope, couldn't do it on this blowout loss). Luis Castillo may be the most sought-after trade targets on the market and the Cincinnati Reds have to get this right. Jeff and Steve look at how La Piedra has performed and why the Reds have such a valuable trade chip in him. The problem with this trade season is that the Reds have the same decision-makers in the higher up ranks of the front office who caused this mess, can we trust them to fix this? The Reds trading Sandy Leon for cash and the Cleveland Guardians immediately starting him makes us wonder if the Reds know what they're doing. Also, the Reds and Chicago Cubs have some valuable prop bets for tonight's game that you can profit from. *SUBSCRIBE* on YouTube and *FOLLOW* the podcast on your favorite app and on Twitter and Instagram @lockedonreds Also follow @jefffcarr and @soffenbaker on Twitter Call or text (513) 549-0159 Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The roster is coming into focus. We talk about the decision to roster Lavastida and let Sandy Leon walk. We talk about Steven Kwan or Ernie Clement for the final roster spot. We talk about the projected rotation and the announcement of Shane Bieber as the opening day starter for the third year in a row. We begin our third mock for the 2022 MLB Draft. It is April so what better time than now. We start with the first six picks. Five of the first six players are hitters, and it would be shocking if there was more than one pitcher in the top six selections. We continue on getting to the Cleveland Guardians pick at 16. There are many college catchers and the prep arms also start to fly. The three college catchers of note Kevin Parada, Daniel Susac, and Logan Tanner listen in to see who I project to the Guardians before giving a few names to keep in mind for pick 35 and in the second round. 1) Doug Jones passed away on Monday. He is one of the most underappreciated players in Guardians/Indian's history. I put him on the All-Time Guardians/Indians team a year ago. With his passing, we do an overview of what was one heck of an interesting career. From Jones not sticking until age 30 to learning his changeup grip from the Duke from Major League. 2) We go in-depth on Jones's time with the Guardians/Indians and his place in the record books. We point out where he is all time and how he compares to other greats. We show how Jones and his changeup in many ways was Mariano Rivera and his cutter before Mariano even if he was not quite at that same level.3) We end with a look at the three moves the Guardians made on Monday. The Guardians signed Sandy Leon to a minor league deal. They traded Harold Ramirez to the Cubs for cash. They also traded JC Mejia to the Brewers for cash or a player to be named later. I explain why the trade was worded that way, and who I think the player the Indians might acquire could be.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Today we say farewell to the only active Hall of Famer Sandy Leon after he was dealt to Cleveland. We open the show talking how sad this offseason has and likely will continue to be, how the Sox are going to have to big-time overachieve next season and praise Sandy Leon for everything he meant to this team and how several of the pitchers will definitely miss him as much as us. We then break down the Red Sox Hall of Fame inductees, talk how truly incredible Manny Ramirez was in his prime, reveal your top 5 starters in our Section 10 Red Sox All-Decade Team, what Brian Bannister's departure means for this club and close with your phenomenal Down in the DM questions. Enjoy!
Paul Hoynes and Joe Noga check in ahead of baseball's winter meetings and discuss Cleveland's trade for Sandy Leon and the next move with Francisco Lindor. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In this, the 31st episode of the Red Sox Coast to Coast Podcast, Brendan O'Toole and Matt Kory discuss the trade of backup catcher Sandy Leon to Cleveland, the tendering of a contract to centerfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. and what that means to Bradley's status on the team, and the reported return to health of ace starter Chris Sale. Further, because this is the Winter of Mookie, they discuss what Sale's health means to the speculative 2020 Red Sox and why that is another data point against any potential trade of Mookie Betts. It should be noted that all data points are data points against any potential trade of Mookie Betts. If you like the podcast, consider giving us five stars on Apple Podcasts or even writing a short review of the podcast. We appreciate and thank everyone who has done that already. But don't feel obligated. We appreciate everyone who listens. Thanks for that. We'll be back next week or shortly thereafter.

In a 9-6 win, JD Martinez and the red hot Red Sox once again had an offensive surge against an Angels team that has been sliding lately losing 5 straight. The Red Sox are now 5-0 against the Angels this season after the win last night. In the season series The Red Sox have 45 runs and 18 homeruns compared to the Angels 10 runs and 4 home runs. This offensive output should not come as a surprise because in the last 6 games the Red Sox have 48 runs and 76 hits. JD Martinez, possibly the biggest contributor on offense this season for the Red Sox hit a league leading 25thhome run last night. This has been a historic year so far for Martinez as he now has the most home runs in Red Sox history before the end of June. Martinez’s home run capped a six run second for the Red Sox. Eduardo Nunez and Sandy Leon also went deep in the inning. It looked as though the Angels were on their way to another blowout loss but they stormed back. Ian Kinsler hit a solo shot and Martin Maldonado launched a three run home run. Simmons then hit an RBI double off Joe Kelly to tie it. Rafael Devers doubled in the 7thto retake the lead, and then Leon hit a single extending the lead to 2. Los Angeles reliver Jake Jewell was carted off the field with what appeared to be a gruesome injury to his right ankle after covering the plate on run-scoring wild pitch in the eighth. Barnes pitched a scoreless 8thinning, but left 2 men in scoring position for Kimbrel. Kimbrel loaded the bases, but escaped en-route to his first four-out save of the season. Kimbrel now has 23 saves on the season. Boston starter Rick Porcello gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings. Heaney was tagged for six runs in 3 1/3 innings.
The Red Sox won for the eighth time in their last ten games on Tuesday night, with every batter collecting at least one hit in Boston's 8-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Rick Porcello earned win number seven on the hill, while Sandy Leon lead the way with three hits, including two doubles and a two-run homer.
