The Phillies were swept in a double header by the Nationals. WHAT A JOKE! Aaron Nola, the defense, and the offense all factored into the game one loss. The Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Mets by a score of 9-8 in extra innings. The Phils were up 6-0 early after Jean Segura hit a bases-clearing double along with Rhys Hoskins and JT Realmtuo hitting solo home runs. Zack Wheeler was strong until the fifth inning when constant doubles were getting ripped off of him. JoJo Romero and David Phelps were not good. Tommy Hunter, Brandon Workman, and Hector Neris were solid. Jean Segura recorded four hits, including a game-winning home run in the tenth inning and 5 RBIs. Check out my sponsors! The Philadelphia Phillies win their fifth straight game by taking down the New York Mets 5-3! Joe Girardi gave Bryce Harper a rest day since he is ice cold, hitting 7 in his last 45 attempts. Jake Arrieta threw seven innings and recorded seven strikeouts. What a great bounce-back from his last start which was the shortest of his career. Also, Arrieta hasn't had a seven inning performance in his last 20 starts. In the seventh inning the game was tied. Phil Gosselin and Roman Quinn were a big reason why the Phils took the lead. In the eighth, Jean Segura added insurance and Adam Haseley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Hector Neris got into trouble and Tommy Hunter had his back with the help of Rhys Hoskins' defense. Yes, you read that correctly. Brandon Workman recorded a clean save! Check out my sponsors! The Philadelphia Phillies win 3-2 over the Washington Nationals and Joe Girardi records his 1000th win as a manager! Aaron Nola didn't have his A+ stuff, but he sure grinded through seven innings effectively. Girardi allowed him to go back on the mound with 100 pitches after the sixth. Juan Soto and Rhys Hoskins traded off solo home-runs to start off the scoring. After the Phils went down 2-1 in the fourth, they responded in the seventh inning thanks to sloppy play by the Nationals. Juan Soto dove for a ball in left-field, allowing Didi Gregorius to get to third base. Victor Robles and Adam Eaton bumped into each other during a routine fly ball in right field. Bryce Harper hit an RBI single to take the lead. Tommy Hunter, after having passionate words to the media, pitched a phenomenal eighth inning. Brandon Workman worked through a bit of a jam and closed the game. Check out my sponsors! Code: BROD at manscaped.com for 20% AND FREE SHIPPING! With the trade deadline coming up, Chris and Ian get back on the line to talk trades. They address the deal that sent Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree to the Phillies and brought back Nick Pivetta and Connor Seabold. The guys then revisited the trade talks with the Padres, and while they don’t see Wil Myers coming to Boston, they do see the Red Sox as being in a good spot to take on salary and get decent young talent in exchange. The guys also talked who the club should and should not move. They talk through Casas joining the Alternate Training Site and who might join them. The Philadelphia Phillies lose 2 of 3 to the Atlanta Braves. Aaron Nola got rocked in game one and it was no contest. Hector Neris and newly added reliever, Brandon Workman, blew game two of the season in the 8th and 9th innings. Zack Wheeler threw a gem and Bryce Harper crushed a 470 ft BOMB! In game three, the Phils had a nice lead thanks to Alec Bohm, Didi Gregorius, and Rhys Hoskins going yard. Zach Eflin was not good enough and the bullpen almost found a way to lose. Heath Hembree was solid in his Phillies' debut, Tommy Hunter had a shutdown eighth inning, and Workman almost blew it again. Freddie Freeman hit a ball into the gap and Roman Quinn cut off the ball, threw it to Gregorius, who gunned out Dansby Swanson at home thanks to a nice tag by Andrew Knapp. You can't get any closer to blowing a save than that. The Red Sox scored the tiebreaking run on an eighth-inning error, completing a three-game sweep of the Blue Jays with a 4-3 victory. J.D. Martinez got things started in the bottom of the second with his 41st home run of the season giving the Red Sox a 1-0 lead. Martinez is now tied with Khris Davis for most home runs in the MLB. Devers also hit a solo homer with two outs in the sixth putting Boston up 3-1. After the Blue Jays rallied for two runs to tie it at 3 in the top of the eighth, Xander Bogaerts doubled in the bottom half and stole third. He came home when Toronto second baseman Yangervis Solarte dropped a popup in shallow right field giving the Red Sox a 4-3 lead. Brandon Workman faced one batter, ending Toronto's eighth-inning rally with just three pitches, and got the win. Craig Kimbrel earned his 40th save. Boston starter Eduardo Rodriguez struck out seven in six innings retiring the last nine batters he faced.
Martinez drove in four and leads the majors with 26 homers and 71 RBI. Boston has won 17 of its last 19 interleague games, including 11 of its last 12. Washington has lost four straight and 16 of 21 to fall to 42-42, its first time at .500 since it was 17-17. Red Sox starter Brian Johnson allowed two runs in 4 2/3 innings. Brandon Workman pitched a perfect seventh, and was awarded the win. Roark allowed a career-high nine runs in seven innings and is 1-8 with a 5.19 ERA in 12 appearances since May 5.
The Red Sox enjoyed a thrilling, come-from-behind victory on the heels of David Ortiz’s game-winning blast Sunday. It’s the kind of win that often sparks a team. … Wait, you’ve heard that before? Arguably the most important road trip of the season isn’t off to an ideal start for the Red Sox, as the hometown team dropped three of four contests to the A’s over the weekend. The offense has been anemic all season long, but was especially dreadful last week. The Red Sox scored 11 runs in six games from Monday through Saturday. Alex pins the majority of the blame for the Red Sox’s poor offensive showing on Dustin Pedroia’s and David Ortiz’s underperformance, though maybe Ortiz’s two big home runs this week – the game-tying shot against the Twins and home run Sunday – will serve as the start of a hot streak for the 38-year-old slugger. Alex says Ortiz’s struggles offensively, and not his public criticism of the Fenway Park official scorer after Wednesday’s contest are worth of the ire of the Boston sports media. Clay Buchholz is schedule to return this week, and slated to start Wednesday. Though the Red Sox remain in the thick of the playoff race, they have an uphill climb in the standings. It’s time for the club to choose “talent” over “depth,” meaning both Brandon Workman and Rubby De La Rosa should remain in the rotation regardless of Buchholz’s performance. The legend of Brock Holt, Grady Sizemore’s unimpressive Red Sox tenure and more is discussed as well. In the “Around the League” segment, Alex takes a look at the AL East standings, and the slumping Blue Jays who are barely hanging on to a marginal lead over the Orioles and Yankees. Alex also points out how Justin Verlander’s struggles shouldn’t affect how the Red Sox approach Jon Lester with a contract extension and why the Cubs must sign Jeff Samardzija long term. Despite another disappointing week, the Red Sox shouldn’t be ready to sell yet. The first two and a half months of the season have been disastrous from an offensive perspective, but this is essentially the same team that won the World Series last year. It’d be unwise to allow 10 weeks of data overturn the perception of this franchise. Now, there doesn’t appear to be a panacea for the Red Sox’s offensive woes. The simplest solution would be improved performances from David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia, as they’ve failed to carry the club for the bulk of the season. Alex recaps the series in Baltimore, in which the Red Sox only scored one run in three games. Brandon Workman and Rubby De La Rosa started two of these games, and remain in what may soon be a crowded rotation for the time being. Felix Doubront started two games in Triple-A last week, and Clay Buchholz started one. John Lackey’s future was a topic of discussion last week, as he made some ambiguous comments about whether he would be willing to play for the league minimum in 2015. It’s difficult to read too deeply into something that Lackey said about his contractual situation in mid June, but it would behoove both he and the team to use his club option for next season as a bargaining chip to work out a long-term extension. The Red Sox need Lackey in the rotation, and he likes playing here. Alex also discusses the four-game set against Terry Francona’s Indians, which couldn’t have ended on a more sour note – the Red Sox went 1-15 with runners in scoring position Saturday and Sunday. In the “Around the League” segment, Alex analyzes the AL East standings and breaks down just how good Masahiro Tanaka has been this year. The Rangers’ almost historic injury woes, and Phillies’ general manager Ruben Amaro’s almost historic level of stupidity are talked about, too. WEEI.com's Rob Bradford and Alex Speier explore the avenues the Red Sox may be forced to take if they do not re-sign Jon Lester. Speier offers updates regarding some of the Red Sox' top pitching prospects, such as Henry Owens, Allen Webster, Anthony Ranaudo, Rubby De La Rosa, Brandon Workman and Matt Barnes, while also engaging the conversation regarding what each pitcher's upside might be. The two also talk Lester, and the path he took to become the pitcher we now see. See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information. Learn more about your ad choices. The World Series is tied up at two games a piece, as a full team effort lifted the Red Sox over the Cardinals in Game 4. Inside this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex recaps Games 2, 3 and 4 and previews the rest of the series. The Red Sox beat themselves in Game 2, as the game-winning score on Craig Breslow2019s errant throw to third base. Breslow has been awful in the series, and should no longer pitch in high leverage situations. Game 3 was arguably the craziest ending to a World Series game ever, as no sport fan likes to see a game decided by a technicality (unless it2019s the tuck rule). But though Jim Joyce2019s obstruction call is how the Red Sox lost the game, it2019s not why they lost the game. The game was lost because Jarrod Saltalamacchia decided to launch a throw to third base when he had no chance of getting the base runner. The game was also because John Farrell apparently has no idea what a double switch is, as he had Brandon Workman bat in the top of the ninth of a tie game in the World Series. If Farrell had wanted Workman to pitch in the bottom of the ninth, he should2019ve subbed out Saltalamacchia for Ross in the bottom of the eighth, and had the pitcher and catcher2019s spots flipped in the order (Saltalamacchia had struck out to end the top of the eighth 2026SURPRISE, SURPRISE). What2019s even weirder, though, is that Farrell removed Workman after he allowed a bloop single to Yadier Molina in the ninth. So if Farrell was going to go to Koji Uehara in the inning anyway, he should2019ve had Mike Napoli pinch-hit for Workman in the top of the frame and then removed him once the bottom of the ninth came around. The decision to let Workman bat while Napoli sat on the bench was inexcusable, and hardly confidence inducing. Farrell has had a shoddy postseason. One of Farrell2019s crutches has been keeping Jonny Gomes in the starting lineup even though he2019s slumping. It2019s ironic, then, that Gomes was the hero on the one night he almost sat. Gomes was inserted into the lineup 90 minutes before Game 4, as Shane Victorino was scratched because of a bad back. After an impassioned speech from David Ortiz prior to the inning, Gomes launched a three-run homer off Cardinals reliever Seth Maness. The Red Sox have had a knack this postseason for coming up big when one would least expect it, and Gomes fit that bill on Sunday night. Clay Buchholz battled through four gritty innings of one-run ball, and is deserving of an apology from every sports talk radio caller out there. The notion that professional baseball players ask out of World Series games because they 201Cdon2019t want it201D is asinine. Maybe Buchholz2019s severely diminished velocity on Sunday will finally convince people that he2019s actually hurt. Felix Doubront picked up Buchholz, and tossed two and two-third scoreless innings out of the bullpen. It2019s amazing that he said he 201Cwasn2019t comfortable201D in a bullpen role just one month ago. John Lackey pitched a scoreless eighth inning of relief, and Koji Uehara nailed down his sixth save of the playoffs in the ninth inning. Uehara picked off pinch-runner Kolten Wong to end the game, leaving the tying run, Carlos Beltran, at the plate. Games 5, 6 and possibly 7 should be terrific. This is what it2019s all about. The Red Sox are going to the ALCS for the first time since 2008 after beating the Rays in four games in the ALDS. Alex recaps games three and four at Tropicana Field, which included everything from questionable managerial decisions to catwalk interference. The Rays won game three on a walk-off home run from back-up catcher Jose Lobaton, who only entered the game as a defensive replacement because Joe Maddon lost the DH spot in the lineup when he had Matt Joyce replace Wil Myers in right field in the eighth inning. Lobaton homered off Koji Uehara, who hadn2019t allowed a home run since June 30. With left-hander Jake McGee on the mound and two men on in the top of the eigth inning, Farrell opted to not pinch-hit for neither Jarrod Saltalamacchia nor Stephen Drew. Alex questions those moves, especially because Farrell pinch-ran for David Ortiz in the inning. If a manager takes his best hitter of the lineup, he2019s playing to win the game right then and there. Thus, he should play the match-ups. The curious decisions to have Clay Buchholz pitch to Evan Longoria with first base open in the fifth inning, and summoning Brandon Workman instead of Uehara in the eighth inning are talked about as well. Like they2019ve done all season, though, the Red Sox came back from a disappointing loss in game three and won game four. They were shutout through the first six innings, but took the lead in the seventh inning after a wild pitch and Shane Victorino infield single to shortstop. Alex discusses the resiliency of the Red Sox, and game four demonstrated the value of Jacoby Ellsbury and Victorino to the bullpen. The bullpen was dominant, too, throwing three and one-third innings of shutout ball while striking out seven batters. Craig Breslow struck out the first four batters he faced. Amidst all of the hubbub about the Red Sox bullpen2019s performance and Maddon2019s self-aggrandizing (sorry, 201Cinnovative201D) managerial style in game four, it easy to forget about Jake Peavy2019s solid performance. Peavy tossed five and two-third innings of one-run ball, and should2019ve shut up the Jose Iglesias apologists for good. The Tigers and A2019s play game five of their series Thursday night, with the winner coming to Fenway Park to begin the ALCS on Saturday. Both teams would represent formidable opponents for the Red Sox, but Alex says he2019d rather see the Tigers. Though they look better on paper than the A2019s do, they appear to be more vulnerable. In the 201CAround the League201D segment, Alex talks about the upcoming NLCS, between the Dodgers and Cardinals, and says Braves manager Freddi Gonzalez should be on the hottest of hot seats after having closer Craig Kimbrel watch Juan Uribe2019s game-leading home run in the eighth inning on Sunday from the bullpen. At least Kimbrel will be rested for next April. (Shockingly, catcher Brian McCann didn2019t try to stop the Dodgers celebration after their win.) Joe Girardi2019s well-deserved managerial extension with the Yankees is discussed too. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
Inside this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex talks about the Red Sox expanding their lead in the AL East to a whopping nine and a half games after taking the first two games from the Rays this week. Clay Buchholz looked as good as anybody could have expected him to look on Tuesday night, as he tossed five innings of shutout ball. But arguably more importantly, his stuff looked good. Buchholz looked awfully similar to the ace caliber pitcher we saw in the first two months of the season, which bodes well for the Red Sox as they head into October. Koji Uehara continues to dominate, as he2019s retired a franchise record 34 consecutive batters (that2019s a perfect game AND THEN SOME). Though there is little left to say about Uehara2019s unworldly performance, Alex tries to put what he2019s done into words. The bridge to Uehara remains shaky; however, as Brandon Workman surrendered two runs in Wednesday night2019s win. With a playoff birth essentially locked up, the Red Sox should spend the rest of the regular season trying out an abundance of pitchers in the latter innings. They need to figure out who else besides Uehara, Craig Breslow and Junichi Tazawa factors into the bullpen in the postseason. Despite Workman2019s poor performance, the Red Sox still came away with the win on Wednesday after Mike Carp2019s pinch-hit grand slam. The resiliency of this team continues to amaze, as does their ability to consistently have good at-bats. In the 201CAround the League201D segment. Alex takes a look at the increasingly close American League wild card standings. Because the Rays have struggled in September, four teams are within striking distance of the second wild card spot. Even the Yankees, who the Red Sox slaughtered last weekend, are still in the thick of the race. Alex previews this weekend2019s Red Sox and Yankees series at Fenway Park, and talks about the AL playoff picture as a whole. The Rangers are in the midst of another September slide, and though the Indians are not, nobody is showing up to watch them anyway. Oh, and any modicum respect you may have had left for Bobby Valentine will be gone after Alex tells you what he said about the Yankees efforts post-9/11. What an egomaniac. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex recaps the biggest Red Sox series win of the season to date, as they took two of three games from the Tigers this week. There is no excuse not buy in to this Red Sox team. Fans who aren't infatuated with this team have nobody but themselves to blame. This year's Red Sox team, from the come-from-behind wins to performances like this week against the Tigers, have shown they're legitimate World Series contenders. Stop being bitter over chicken and beer from two years ago, and get on board. Jon Lester was a big part of the collapse in September 2011, which is why his dominating performance against the Tigers on Tuesday night was the all more encouraging. Lester looked the best he's looked in two years on Tuesday, with nine strikeouts and no walks in seven innings pitched. It is unknown whether Clay Buchholz will be an ace when he returns to the rotation next week. If Lester pitches like an ace down the stretch, Buchholz' production will be gravy. Speaking of gravy, the Red Sox poured it on against the Tigers on Wednesday, scoring 20 runs in the win. The Red Sox have scored a combined 19 runs over John Lackey's last 10 starts, and four runs in his past three outings. But to Lackey's credit, he didn't express frustration at his teammates after the loss on Monday. Lackey should be commended for the way he's handled his business this season. Will Middlebrooks should also be commended for the way he's performed since being recalled, and had a big series against the Tigers. The Red Sox were hoping Middlebrooks could lock down the third base job upon returning, and he's done exactly that. David Ortiz' 2,000 career hit, the sad end to Daniel Bard's Red Sox career, John Farrell's curious use of Brandon Workman and the "most NESN thing ever" are discussed as well. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings, as the Red Sox continue to pull away from the Rays. The Red Sox also hold a a hefty lead over the Yankees, who are 13-6 over their last 19 games. It should be a great series this weekend in New York. The Pirates won their 81st game of the season on Tuesday, and clinched a winning season for the first time in two decades. It's a terrific story for baseball, as is the three team race in the NL Central. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
