Dave and Greg welcome Will Leitch of Sports On Earth and the New Republic (and the founder of Deadspin) to talk about the St. Louis Blues, how baseball and hockey are constantly trying to court fans that don’t like them, Barstool Sports and the changing digital sports media landscape, and Will’s Oscar picks. That, plus the Auston Matthews vs. Patrik Laine debate goes nuclear; the downside of the “Miracle On Ice”; previewing the NHL trade deadline; and musical tribute to the sad, ignored Ryan Johansen; a Blackhawks fans marries a Wild fan on the ice but betrays his team; and listener mail that takes us through pizza dipping, hockey documentaries and Ilya Bryzgalov on the seven new exoplanets.
This week was heavy with topics and we didn't even get to half of them so alot coming next week. What we did have was an awesome guest sports writer/entrepreneur/enthusiast Gabe Guarente here to debate the issues and give us some relief of the Trump heavy news week. Chaz keeps us informed on bill watch, the education secretary, and we talk sports comedies. Check Gabe's work along with others at SportsOnEarth.com

Flinder Boyd is a former professional basketball player who now writes longform journalism. For 10 years, he played as a point guard in the lower and upper levels of many professional European basketball leagues. Now he’s writing, often about basketball. His story “20 Minutes at Rucker Park” profiles a young man’s cross-country journey on a Greyhound bus to New York City’s streetball Mecca. That story was published on SB Nation Longform. It was subsequently a Longform selection and named by Longreads a Top 5 Longread of the Week. It was also a Nieman Storyboard recommended reading selection and earned Boyd Longread’s Favorite New Writer Discovery in 2013. Finally, Sports on Earth called the story a Top 20 sports story in 2013. To top things off, the story was anthologized in Best American Sports Writing 2014. He’s written two other stories for SB Nation Longform; a profile of NBA player Chris Copeland and a first-hand account of the corruption and chaos of playing professional basketball in Slovakia. Since joining the podcast, Boyd has started writing for many other outlets, including Rolling Stone, Newsweek and Fox Sports, where he wrote about Rafael Palmeiro in April 2016. Boyd has also written for The Classical, Sports On Earth and BBC online among others. You can follow him on Twitter @FlinderBoyd.

Sports On Earth's Will Leitch takes another run at what we like to call 'The Leitch' -- successfully pitching a Canon entry AND winning a Game Time in a single guest shot -- as we discuss the return of Louie. We went around the dial, singing 'Sunrise, Sunset' to some shows (Sirens, Almost Human) and saying 'Hello, Charlie!' to another (Charlie's Angels), and Sarah celebrated Project Tiny Triumph before we considered a recent Eastbound & Down episode for the Canon. In a sportsy Game Time, could our honored guest pull off a Leitch-peat...or will he have to wait 'til next year? Join us as we swing for the fences on this week's Extra Hot Great. GUESTS
I had originally reached out to Will Leitch just before the Olympics and he said he'd gladly come on after them. Time flies in my world and I never got back to him, which is especially stupid on my part. Leitch joined me today and discussed his recent work on Donald Sterling, Leitch Across America, and Chief Wahoo's future. Make sure you check out Will's work at Sports On Earth and also make sure you keep up to date by following him on Twitter. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

A bit of a different NLDN40 this week as we saw Jameis Winston this weekend be crowned the new Heisman trophy winner and the new name to watch out for in College Football. We invite onto the pod one of our favourite College Football writers, Michael Weinreb from Sportsonearth.com to talk all things Jameis as well as running through some of the upcoming bowl game match ups and who to look out next season in the 2014 NFL draft. We stay on the college tip and talk about some Youngstown Boys, the incredible new ESPN documentary about Ohio State with our resident Ohio Native and great mate Joe Cohen who also delivers his damning verdict at the end of another miserable season of Cleveland Browns fandom. Don't worry folks we squeeze in all the relevant NFL chat and give you some more info on our SuperBowl party on 2nd Feb. Classic NLD40 people - enjoy!
