A week after the shocking dismissal of Michael Colucci's 10-year-old murder charge because of prosecutorial misconduct on the behalf of SLED and the South Carolina Attorney General's Office, Bishop Venters — the daughter of Sara-Lynn Moore Colucci, whom Michael is accused of strangling to death in May 2015 — says she's ready to fight for a new trial. Bishop, whose biological father died under tragic circumstances a few years earlier, was about 8 years old when Michael, her mother's new husband, adopted her. She was just 11 when Michael told her that her mother had died in an accident. After her mother's death, Bishop says Michael and his mother Doris kept her away from her maternal grandparents, telling her they were bad people. She would later learn that her grandparents were suing for custody of her. And after Michael's arrest, Michael abandoned his adopted daughter and moved to the beach, leaving Bishop in the care of Doris and her husband Ivo, where Bishop wasn't allowed to speak about or show emotion about her mother's death. Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell sat down with Bishop to talk about what life was like before and after her mother's death, what she thinks happened the day Sara-Lynn died, her thoughts on the judge's decision last week as well as her strong conviction to continue her grandparents' fight for justice. ☕ Cups Up! ⚖️ Episode References “Urge SC Attorney General to PRIORITIZE the Re-Indictment of Michael Colucci” - Change.org Petition About Childhood Trauma from The National Child Traumatic Stress Network
Michael Colucci, a Summerville, South Carolina jeweler, was once again on trial for the death of his wife, seven years after his initial trial ended in a mistrial. Michael Colucci is accused of killing his wife, Sara Lynn Colucci, in May 2015. During his first trial in 2018, prosecutors alleged that Michael strangled Sara. His defense argued that she died by suicide, claiming she hanged herself with a garden hose on a nearby fence while Michael was sitting in their car just 25 feet away. Just moments before Colucci's trial was set to begin, Judge Roger Young ruled in favor of the defense motion to dismiss the case. Seton tucker was there for the shocking decision. Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell have spent the past year preparing for Charleston-area good ole boy Michael Colucci to be tried again for the 2015 murder of his wife, Sara-Lynn Moore Colucci. Twice a retrial was scheduled. And twice it didn't happen. On Tuesday, after the jury had been seated, South Carolina Judge Roger M. Young quashed the indictment of Colucci and dismissed what was to be a two-week trial and the end of what had become the oldest open murder case in the state. For 10 years, Sara-Lynn's family, including her mother and her only daughter, Bishop, who was a child at the time her mother died, have had to sit silently time and time again as the justice system continued to fail them. What didn't help matters? Original prosecutor and current public official Megan (Burchstead) Burleson's surly and defensive behavior on the stand on Tuesday…
Investigative journalists and co-hosts of True Sunlight Podcast Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell and attorney Eric Bland discuss the heinous details contained in court documents about what suspended South Carolina Representative RJ May has been accused of doing and why it was important for the U.S. Attorney's Office to get so graphic. Over the course of five days in 2024, RJ May is accused of sharing 220 different child-sex abuse videos — including videos of babies being raped, bestiality with children and sex acts between toddlers and grown women and men. He shared those videos 479 times with other “like-minded pedophiles,” according to court records. Even more stunning is that while the FBI conducted its investigation, RJ May remained a lawmaker and even got re-elected — despite the powers that be allegedly being aware of the nature of that investigation. RJ May's case should serve as a wake-up call for everyone. Also on the show, Michael Colucci's retrial is this week. Mandy, Liz and Eric talk about the incredible accusations made in the motion to dismiss that Colucci's team filed Friday, accusing SLED and South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson's Office of sitting on “conclusive evidence” that Michael's wife, Sara-Lynn Colucci — whom Michael is accused of killing — had plans to hang herself. ☕ Cups Up! ⚖️ Episode References “Will RJ May be expelled from SC House? Is Michael Colucci finally going to trial for allegedly murdering Sara Lynn Colucci in 2015? Why does Weldon Boyd claim witnesses back up his story in the Scott Spivey shooting? Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell discuss two separate but related cases in South Carolina that highlight obvious systemic failures within the justice system. First, we focus on the upcoming retrial of Michael Colucci for the murder of his wife, Sara Lynn Moore Colucci, emphasizing red flags in his 911 call, his ‘gathering storm' of financial and stress leading up to her death, and the volatile nature of their relationship. Then we examine the alleged wrongful death of Scott Spivey, critically analyzing Horry County Police Department's investigation, the inconsistencies in witness testimonies, and the actions of Weldon Boyd, exposing a potential cover-up and lack of thorough inquiry by authorities. What does it take to achieve greater transparency and accountability in South Carolina's legal processes, particularly in cases involving influential men…? Let's dive in!
Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell and attorney Eric Bland —talk about the retrial of murder suspect Michael Colucci, who is accused of strangling his wife Sara-Lynn Moore Colucci 10 years ago in Summerville, South Carolina, and how the age and health of his high-profile (and high-cost) attorney contributed to the constant trial delays. Is this yet another trick of the defense attorney trade in South Carolina? Leveraging an attorney's health in court to benefit defendants … and further hurt victims? Also on the show it's been four years since Alex Murdaugh murdered his wife and son … and why phrasing it that way matters. Plus churchy business bro “Pastor” JP Miller marries his alleged longtime mistress Suzie Skinner in a highly public (but still dumpy) beach ceremony. There's a lot to say there. ☕ Cups Up! ⚖️ Episode References “Colleton County man goes to trial, accused of setting wife on fire, killing her” - Live5, Nov 4, 2024

In this episode of the Rainmaker Podcast, Michele Colucci, founder and managing director of DigitalDx Ventures, joins Gui Costin to discuss how artificial intelligence is revolutionizing healthcare diagnostics—and how her firm is leading the charge. With a background spanning law, technology, entrepreneurship, and venture capital, Michele brings a multidisciplinary approach to investing in early-stage diagnostic companies that leverage AI and data to detect disease earlier, more accurately, and with less invasiveness.Michele describes the mission of DigitalDx: to identify startups that enable faster, more accessible diagnostics for major diseases, particularly in areas like neurology where early detection is critical but traditionally difficult. She explains that the human body is essentially a data problem—and that by harnessing AI, it becomes possible to detect issues long before symptoms appear. One of the firm's standout investments includes an FDA-approved over-the-counter syphilis test with a 10-minute result time. She walks listeners through the firm's investment criteria, focusing on statistically significant sample sizes, scalability, and team coachability. DigitalDx looks for companies under a $20 million pre-money valuation and plays an active role post-investment, often joining boards and supporting portfolio companies through major growth milestones. Michele emphasizes the power of deep bench support—her team includes experts from NVIDIA, Stanford, Siemens, and more—alongside an innovative “Entrepreneur in Residence” program and a fellowship that sources global deal flow while nurturing underrepresented talent in venture capital.DigitalDx distinguishes itself not just by investing capital, but by offering founders access to a robust, highly experienced network that helps de-risk startups across science, regulatory, reimbursement, and go-to-market strategies. Michele also touches on the importance of aligning passion with professional purpose, both for her team and young professionals entering venture capital. Her leadership style prioritizes conviction, team ownership, and positivity, steering away from zero-sum thinking and toward collaborative problem-solving.As Michele reflects on market headwinds, she points to fundraising as a current challenge but emphasizes that conviction-driven investors—those looking ahead to where innovation is going, especially at the intersection of AI and healthcare—are best positioned for long-term success. This episode offers a powerful look into how visionary leadership, deep domain expertise, and a mission-driven model can reshape the future of healthcare investing.Tired of chasing outdated leads? In our continued dissection of the OLD NEWS, Emily Colucci and I discuss: Indicted former art advisor Lisa Schiff and her upcoming bankruptcy auction, to be conducted by Phillips; how Paul McCarthy is slowly throwing out his immense artwork, WS (White Snow), because he can't store the work any longer, and how he failed to get any museums to buy the work, ultimately deciding to throw the work out piece by piece, which is, of course, logistically challenging (it takes up 4000 sq. ft of space and contains some very challenging- (read: yucky) ephemera); the art of Operation Under, a collective of artists who make wall paintings in underground tunnels throughout LA County, in one case the writer (Matt Stromberg of Hyperallergic) encounters racoons both in painted form as well as the in-real-life, glowing-eyes kind; how one museum took to pairing smells with a pre-Raphaelite artwork exhibition (including ‘dewy grass'), and how it led viewers to stay with the work a significantly longer period than traditional scent-less art viewing.

In the latest round of OLD NEWS with former guest Emily Colucci (creator of the art & culture website Filthy Dreams), we cover: cancel culture through the lens of James Franco (who was part of our original recording back in 2016) and Louis C.K.; Cai Guo-Qiang's botched fireworks performance at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum as part of PST Art's ‘Science and Art'-themed mega-art event, including injured spectators; our own thoughts and feelings about fireworks, particularly of the neighborhood kind, and how Emily kind of loves the tacky spectacle of them; how California College of the Arts is considering closing its doors, and whether it's surprising there aren't more private art schools that are closing or on the verge of doing so; how and why the art market is struggling, and how Emily is frustrated that if nobody is selling anything anyway, why is everyone putting on boring shows?; how Emily tends not to interact with gallery-sitters/gallerinas, having been one herself (at Sikkema Jenkins) and just wanting the visitor to leave already; and our respective strategic approaches to gallery-hopping with an emphasis on efficiency and avoiding everything blurring together at the end of the day.

Investigative journalist Liz Farrell — and everyone's favorite attorney Eric Bland — sit down with lawyer (and journalist!) Julie Grant, host of Court TV's “Opening Statements,” to talk about everything from Alex Murdaugh's lies to Bill Cosby's very worst behavior outside the courthouse to the emotional impact of the Colucci trial postponement. The three also discuss vicarious trauma and how that can affect reporters, what law school is REALLY like, as well as Julie's unusual path to her well-deserved career and what aspect of the justice system she'd change if she had a magic wand. Julie is a journalist, a lawyer — and a trial court expert. Above all, she's an advocate for victims. We really admire Julie's work because of how she chooses to keep victims' perspectives and their stories at the forefront of highly publicized national cases. Julie is a big advocate of therapy for everyone — not just lawyers and journalists — and she was the perfect guest for us to have during Mental Health Awareness Month because that's such an important message. Plus, Premium Members get an additional segment when Julie introduces her new French bulldog puppy to Liz and Eric…So pup's up to Julie! Let's get into it... Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell untangle the very strange — and very heartbreaking — death of Mica Miller, a 30-year-old pastor's wife from South Carolina whose body was found in a North Carolina state park a few weeks ago. Over the weekend, journalists, true crime aficionados and people hoping for justice learned about Mica's death, accusations of marital abuse and her in-progress divorce, along with one very strange sermon in which her estranged husband — John Paul Miller — announced her death to his flock by telling them to stand, listen and don't talk about what they're about to hear after they hear it. Internet sleuths worked overtime, convinced the road to Mica's death would lead them back to her husband. When Robeson County Sheriff's Office deputies released details about why they had ruled Mica's death a suicide, they provided an answer, but many more questions still linger. Through suicide, Mica Miller pointed the world toward her husband, who she feared would “put a bullet in her head.” This week's episode of True Sunlight looks at the investigation into Mica's death and digs into police reports that outline what Mica's life looked like in the months and weeks before she took her own life. Also on the show, why was Michael Colucci's murder trial postponed AGAIN? And Premium Members get an extended version with more information about the decision to delay the Colucci case. Also on the show, turns out accused killer Michael Colucci IS on an ankle monitor. Why is it so hard in South Carolina for victims to get a straight answer about a defendant's bond conditions and whether they're violating those terms? Also, on the show, the very strange death of 30-year-old Mica Miller. Was it a suicide? Or is there something else happening here altogether? In the weeks leading up to her death and in the wake of filing for divorce, Mica — whose husband John Paul Miller is pastor of a Myrtle Beach church — lived in fear of getting killed by John Paul. Now her family is fighting for law enforcement to listen. The Michael Colucci retrial is less than two weeks away in the Charleston area of South Carolina. Did Michael kill his wife, did she kill herself or did Sara Lynn Colucci die after tripping and falling into the loose loop of a garden hose? Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — who helped bring justice in the Alex Murdaugh cases — continue their pre-trial digging in the hopes of bringing more sunlight to the Colucci case this time around. This week they share what they found in newly discovered reports that show all the times police were called to houses where Michael has stayed. A social media post by one of Michael's friends appears to be mocking pre-trial coverage of Michael's case. Police reports continue to add confusion to the question of Michael's bond status. Plus, a look at how investigators handled — or didn't handle — accusations that Michael vandalized his parents' beach house after getting evicted and the coincidence of when this case was dropped. Also, Michael's high-priced and big reputation attorney Andy Savage files a slew of pretrial motions, trying to prevent the jury from finding out that HE destroyed evidence in the first trial. Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — known for their work in covering Alex Murdaugh's murders and atrocious schemes — continue their look into the Michael Colucci case. In three weeks, Michael will be retried for the 2015 death of his wife Sara Lynn Colucci, who he says killed herself … or maybe tripped and fell into her noose? In the days and weeks before Sara Lynn's death by asphyxiation, she and Michael got into several fights over text about the state of their marriage. In this 48th episode of the True Sunlight Podcast, Mandy and Liz give a play by play of what those texts say and how they stand in stark contrast to the picture Michael's defense attorney attempted to paint during his first trial. Also on the show, they talk with Kim Colucci Lizzi, Michael's stepsister, who gives listeners a look into her family dynamic and what led her father, Ivo Colucci, to kill his wife — Michael's mother — just two years after Michael's own arrest for murder. Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell continue to shine the light on a corrupt judicial system in South Carolina. This week they helped bring attention to and did their part to stop the legislature from electing prosecutor David Miller to a judgeship — after exposing Miller's role in getting thrice-accused rapist Bowen Turner a secret soft plea deal in 2022. Also on this 47th episode of the True Sunlight Podcast, Mandy and Liz break down what happened during Bowen Turner's latest ride to jail this past March (spoiler alert: he's exactly the racist, homophobic, misogynistic person they thought he was). Plus listeners get another look into their deep dive into the Sara Lynn Colucci case. We're now one month away from Michael Colucci's retrial for the 2015 death of his wife. Mandy and Liz share what they've learned about Sara Lynn's volatile relationship with Michael in the weeks leading up to her death. On today's episode Co-hosts Eric Bland and Mandy Matney got to interview one of our favorite guests so far on this show… Vinnie Politian of Court TV. Politian is an Emmy winning journalists AND a former prosecutor who combines his journalistic talents with his legal knowledge to cover some of the craziest cases in the American court system. We have always liked Vinnie Politian's Court TV coverage of the Murdaugh case because he was one of the few people on TV to tell it like it is and call out all of the absurdities. We had a great time talking with Vinnie about the never-ending Murdaugh saga and Vinnie is actually very familiar on the latest case our team is diving into – the Colucci trial set for this May. Premium Members get access to a longer segment on Vinnie's background and younger days. Let's get into it... On today's True Sunlight Podcast, Co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell update you on what went down at Alex Murdaugh's federal sentencing hearing this week, where he was sentenced to 40 years. What does this new sentence mean? And why does Alex have to pay back millions to his former law firm and Palmetto State Bank when both allowed these crimes to happen for years? Also on the show, the South Carolina Attorney General's Office believes suspected murderer Michael Colucci has been on house arrest at his parents' house but … his parents have been dead for years. Also, according to police reports, Michael was evicted from their home in April 2017 — BEFORE his first trial. Why does South Carolina have such a terrible bond system when it comes to violent criminals? Also, what police reports tell us about Michael's life after his arrest in Sara Lynn Colucci's death. We want to share a special thanks to True Sunlight fan Tom at the Late Night with Seth Meyers show for the unbelievable experience and CONGRATS to Sheryl Crow on her new album Evolution!!! On today's True Sunlight Podcast, Co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell begin their dive down the complex rabbit hole that is the Sara Lynn Moore-Colucci case. Sara Lynn was killed on the evening of May 20, 2015, outside of Charleston, South Carolina, at a jewelry warehouse she owned with her husband, Michael Colucci. She died by asphyxiation mere feet from Michael, who said he was waiting in the car for her to use the restroom. Michael Colucci contends that Sara Lynn took her own life or … barring that … she tripped and fell into the loops of an industrial garden hose and accidentally hung herself. When first-responders arrived at the scene, they found Sara Lynn's body already cold to the touch and Michael with scratches on his body and a fat and bloody lip, which he says he got from giving Sara Lynn CPR. In 2018, Michael was tried for her murder but that case ended in a mistrial. Now, as the prosecution and defense gear up for a May 13, 2024, retrial, Mandy and Liz break down what went wrong six years ago and the story of Sara Lynn and Michael that the jury should have heard back then. We'll also hear from speakers at the Victims Matter Rally like David Pascoe, Carl Smalls Sr. and Sarah Ford plus a special message from Sandy Smith on her experiences at the rally... On today's True Sunlight Podcast, Co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell talk to South Carolina Victims Assistance Network attorney Sarah Ford and Karl Stoller, a father who continues to seek justice for his daughter's sexual assault, about the latest arrest of Bowen Turner. Bowen — who was accused by three girls in three separate counties of rape — avoided prison time for those sexual assaults after he received a sweetheart plea deal in 2022, which his lawyer-legislator was able to secure because of his implied influence over the prosecution and the judge. This is his second arrest since his sentence was suspended almost two years ago and it's just four months since he was released from the South Carolina Department of Corrections. Also on today's show, Mandy and Liz begin their coverage of the Michael Colucci retrial, starting with the night Michael's wife, Sara Lynn, was found dead outside their business in Summerville. They break down the 911 call from that night and talk about what's in store for Michael's retrial in May. On today's True Sunlight Podcast, Co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell continue their investigation into the photos and screenshots found on Stephen Smith's phone, learning more about what the Hampton, S.C., teen's life was like leading up to his mysterious death in July 2015. Mandy and Liz revisit two interviews with South Carolina Highway Patrol that — with new context — shed more light on his very last night and on what evidence SLED might have to help them retrace Stephen's steps. Plus, listeners will finally get to hear Stephen's own voice from a video Mandy and Liz found on his iPad... Also on the show, Luna Shark is taking on a new case! This May, Michael Colucci will stand trial — again — for the 2015 murder of his wife, Sara Lynn Moore-Colucci. Michael — a wealthy, prominent and well-connected Charleston-area man — insists that his wife killed herself with a garden hose. His attorney Andy Savage (yes, that one) even suggests that she might have tripped and fallen into the hose and hanged herself. SLED Agent David Owen — remember him from Alex Murdaugh's trial? — and the Attorney General say Michael strangled Sara to death in a fit of anger. This case features a lot of familiar themes and players from the Murdaugh trial, including the twists and turns that seem to have come right off the pages of a novel... On Tuesday, we published one of our Top Five Favorite episodes of Cup of Justice! We interviewed Emmy Award Winning Journalist and TV Host Tamron Hall. Tamron was on the TODAY Show in Mandy's early days of journalism and she deeply admired how she handled stories. So, y'all… give episode 69 of COJ a listen to learn all about her new book 'Watch Where They Hide', the attached scripted series and bias in journalism. We promise it's a good one!
