I've always been fascinated by the idea of biological age, how “old” your body really is versus what your passport says. When I first heard about DNA methylation tests that claim to measure that, I was hooked. Could we really peek into our own cellular aging? In this episode, I am joined by Dr. David Furman, a leading scientist at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and the Director of the Stanford 1000 Immunomes Project. Dr. Furman shares his extensive knowledge on biological age and breaks down the latest technologies in aging science. With decades of expertise, he explains why current biological age tests, especially epigenetic clocks, aren't as reliable as they may seem, and what advancements are on the horizon. He explains why inflammation is at the center of age-related diseases and how targeting it could improve our health span, thus helping us not just live longer, but better. We also touch on some fascinating new technologies, including microgravity-based aging tests, which simulate the effects of aging on cells, revealing how specific organs may age differently.Plus, we get a glimpse into a smartphone app that can measure inflammation with just a selfie!Want to learn more about the future of aging and how you can take control of your biological age? Give to help Chris continue making Truce In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the United States went years without using the death penalty. Not a single person was killed by injection, firing squad, hanging, or electric chair. But by the late 90s, we were killing around 100 convicted criminals per year. What happened? In 1972, the Supreme Court handed down its decision Furman v. Georgia, which negated state capital punishment laws across the country. This meant that some of the worst criminals in the country were suddenly given new sentences. And Americans... lost their minds. Within just a few years, new laws were written, and the Court decided to approve many of them. The death penalty long had a prejudiced bent, disproportionately killing people of color. The NAACP worked hard to end the practice, but those efforts were soon undone as American opinions toward the death penalty abruptly changed. Making his Next on the Tee debut is David Eby, Director of Golf at Banyan Golf Club in Palm Beach, Florida, where he's been leading the charge for nearly 30 years. David's journey through the game is a great story of passion, hard work, and lifelong dedication to golf. He played his college golf at Augusta University (then Augusta College) from 1986–1989, earning a degree in Economics and helping the team capture multiple tournament titles, including the 1987 Big South Conference Championship. During those years, he also had the unique opportunity to caddie at Augusta National, looping for several notable people like Don Shula, Peter Ueberroth, and Jack Welch. He even got to play the course himself—a dream few golfers ever realize. After college, David began his professional career as an Assistant Golf Pro at Augusta National, followed by a move to Pine Valley as First Assistant Pro, then becoming Head Golf Professional at Cedar Point Club in Virginia. Before long, he found his home at Banyan Golf Club, where he's built one of the finest golf environments in South Florida. In our conversation, David reflects on his experiences at legendary venues like Moraine Country Club (site of Byron Nelson's 1945 PGA win), shares great stories from his college days—including a Joe Namath like experience while playing a tournament at Furman. He then offers insights on how technology has reshaped the game. We also discuss Banyan's world-class facilities, designed by Joe Lee, and how their state-of-the-art practice area rivals even Augusta National's. David's stories span from Augusta to Palm Beach, filled with heart, history, and lessons that remind us why we love this game.

Masennuksen hoito on lääkeyhtiöille miljardibisnes.

Cal Hurst, a Furman baseball alum, talks about sharing the gospel through relationships!
Inflammation is the body's natural way of healing, but when it becomes chronic and hidden, it quietly drives many of today's most common health problems—heart disease, diabetes, dementia, cancer, autoimmune conditions, and more. Unlike the redness and swelling from a cut or sprain, this “silent inflammation” often goes unnoticed while slowly damaging tissues and speeding up aging. Modern life fuels the fire: processed foods, food additives, pollution, plastics, chronic stress, too much sitting, and poor sleep. The good news is inflammation can be calmed by simple daily choices—eating colorful whole foods like berries, leafy greens, beans, nuts, seeds, and omega-3 rich fish; adding herbs and spices like turmeric and cumin; moving regularly; practicing relaxation; and repairing gut health. Even small shifts, like climbing stairs, eating within a shorter window, or reducing sugar, can make a big difference. By lowering inflammation, the body finds balance again, opening the door to more energy, resilience, and healthy aging. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Shilpa Ravella and Dr. David Furman, why it's important to be aware of systemic inflammation and how to address it. Dr. Ravella is a gastroenterologist and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center. She is the author of A Silent Fire: The Story of Inflammation, Diet & Disease, which investigates inflammation—the hidden force at the heart of modern disease. Her writing has appeared in The Atlantic, New York Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, TIME, Slate, Discover, and USA Today, among other publications. Dr. David Furman is Associate Professor and Director of the Bioinformatics Core at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, as well as the Director of the Stanford 1000 Immunomes Project. He obtained his doctoral degree in immunology from the School of Medicine, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, for his work on cancer immune-surveillance. During his postdoctoral training at the Stanford School of Medicine, Dr. Furman focused on the application of advanced analytics to study the aging of the immune system in humans. He has published nearly thirty scientific articles in top-tier journals such as Cell, Nature Medicine, PNAS, The Lancet, and others. This episode is brought to you by BIOptimizers. I put quite a number of player interviews in the can on my trip to the west coast affiliates last week, and I'll roll them out over the next couple of weeks. First up, I have a trio of hitters — two trade acquisitions who have just gotten their first taste of action in the Giants' organization this month, and a high school draftee in his second season. Nate Furman and Parks Harber talk about the unique situation of being traded while rehabbing injuries, as well as their approach to hitting. Furman is one of best contact hitters in the minors, and Harber owns some of the most intriguing hit data in the minors, including a howling 90th percentile Exit Velocity above 108 mph. Lastly, I spoke to Walker Martin about how he used his difficult first season as a learning opportunity, leading to a much improved second year in the system. All three of these guys were thoughtful and articulate, and gave some great insights into their personal growth process. If you want to get more of this kind of content, why not consider becoming a There R Giants' subscriber so you, too, can support my work covering the Giants' farm system. There R Giants is a reader-supported publication.
