On Tuesday November 19th, Glór will host No Magic Pill. No Magic Pill is the heartfelt, hilarious and irreverent story of an activist and a celebration of love, friendship and the enduring pursuit of freedom. The play, written by Christian O'Reilly and directed by Raymond Keane, leads the way in Irish theatre in its casting of disabled actors. Asia is on the cusp of a summer of life-threatening dengue fever.  Synopsis: Every fourth Friday of the month, The Straits Times' global contributor Nirmal Ghosh shines a light on Asian perspectives of global and Asian issues with expert guests. Dengue fever case numbers have gone up across the global tropics. This includes Singapore, a model in many respects for health surveillance and epidemic control, and mosquito control. In the first quarter of 2024, Singapore recorded more than double the number of cases than in the same period in 2023.  Meanwhile across the world, Latin America and the Caribbean have been warned to prepare for their worst dengue season ever.  The long war against dengue must contend with many factors including climate, weather, and human behaviour. Even without an outbreak or epidemic, dengue may circulate silently among populations.  No single solution is perfect. Dengue vaccines have been developed, but there are four strains of the virus, and the vaccines have different degrees of efficacy.  The key to effective dengue control is health surveillance and a good laboratory system - and in Singapore's case especially, collaboration with neighbouring countries. Vaccinating populations could help complement other dengue and mosquito control measures. Some in the mainstream have been dining out on it ever since. According to our guest, author and blogger Brian Romanchuk, neoclassical economics relies on mathematical models and fail to capture the complexity of real-world inflation. He highlights the importance of understanding the supply and demand dynamics in setting prices and explains that inflation can be influenced by factors such as supply chain shocks and changes in the labor market. Brian also points out that it's not enough to blame inflation on corporate greed; after all, corporations are always driven to maximize profits. He mentions the Cantillon effect, which suggests that the first recipients of newly created money benefit from inflation as prices go up, while the poor and working class bear the brunt of higher prices down the road. Brian and Steve discuss inflation constraints on fiscal policy. Brian argues that while extreme fiscal policies could lead to inflation, most of the time, fiscal policy is relatively moderate and does not have a significant impact on inflation. They criticize the government for not trying to set prices and argue that the government often follows the private sector's lead, making things worse. Brian Romanchuk is the author of several books, including Modern Monetary Theory and the Recovery. He is the writer and publisher of bondeconomics.com. US Federal Reserve officials have been adamant that they're looking to get inflation levels back down to 2%. But the path to that goal could bring pain to millions of workers, a possible trade-off that “doesn't make sense,” according to Rick Rieder, BlackRock Inc.'s chief investment officer of global fixed income. “This whole idea of there's a magic to 2% doesn't make any sense to me. You just had immense stimulus—let it play out,” he says on this week's episode of the What Goes Up podcast. “Interest rates—how much would you have to move them to get the unemployment rate to a level to slow wages? It's not worth it. Why would you take millions of people out of work because you need to go from 2.7% to 2%?” He called the Fed goal a search for “mystical perfection.” BlackRock manages about $2.7 trillion in fixed-income assets for its clients. Rieder adds that the segment of the population that gets hurt by higher inflation is the one that would bear the brunt of any potential layoffs.
