My guest on the podcast this week is Marija Abney. Marija is a South Carolina native who moved to NY to pursue an arts education at The AIley School at Fordham University and went on to earn her MA in performance studies from NYU. Marija is an actress and dancer who has appeared as a Dora Milaje in "Black Panther" and "Wakanda Forever" as well as "Avengers Inifinity War" and "Avengers End Game," and was featured in Tubi's "A Killer Romance" and "Twisted Marriage Therapist."In many ways though, her most impactful contribution to "the culture" is founding The Soapbox Presents and launching a wildly successful series of "stoop concerts" in Harlem that builds loving community and attracts crowds of over 3500 people per event. The series is so successful it caught the attention of legendary singer-songwriter Babyface who asked to participate and entertained the crowd with a pop up performance of "Whip Appeal."We chat about her artistic journey, art as activism, and what it was like to work with the late Chadwick Boseman.Support the showPlease make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel and follow the podcast on Instagram.

Directed by Ryan Coogler and produced by Marvel Studios, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is the superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Black Panther. It is the sequel to Black Panther (2018) and the 30th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The sequel to Black Panther comes following the death of the actor of the title character, T'Challa, Chadwick Boseman. It is also the final film in Phase Four of the MCU. Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M'Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira), and the Dora Milaje fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T'Challa's death. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda.
Host Greg Iwinski talks to Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole about their collaboration process for BLACK PANTHER and BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER, rewriting a screenplay while – and as part of – grieving, space-saving ways to write a half-dozen languages into your script, and more. Ryan Coogler is a writer-director whose credits include the 2013 biopic FRUITVALE STATION and the CREED franchise. Joe Robert Cole is a writer-director who has written for the series THE PEOPLE VS. O.J. SIMPSON: AMERICAN CRIME STORY, and wrote and directed the feature film ALL DAY AND A NIGHT. Ryan and Joe cowrote the screenplay for BLACK PANTHER as part of Phase Three of the MCU. The film was nominated for a Writers Guild Award for Adapted Screenplay and became the first superhero film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER – their latest project together and the sequel to the 2018 film – follows Queen Ramonda, Shuri, M'Baku, Okoye and the Dora Milaje during their fight to protect Wakanda from intervening world powers in the wake of King T'Challa's death. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with Nakia and Everett Ross to forge a new path for their beloved kingdom. The film was released in November 2022. It's currently playing in theaters and will be available to stream on Disney+ starting February 1, 2023. The circumstances under which we found ourselves in the Black Panther sequel were completely unfortunate, but the popularity of Black Panther guaranteed that there would be a sequel, with or without Chadwick Boseman. The ship was much harder to steer without him, but we're talking about that sequel today, Wakanda Forever! "Queen Ramonda, Shuri, M'Baku, Okoye and the Dora Milaje fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T'Challa's death. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with Nakia and Everett Ross to forge a new path for their beloved kingdom." There is so much that is going on with this film. The exit of Chadwick, the introduction of the newest Black Panther, the introduction of Namor, but there were many smaller subplots that were all branching out. You should definitely watch the movie in order to decide whether you think it was too much, or perfect, but there is definitely much about the movie that you need to pay attention to. “T'Challa Was Truly Noble. Are You Going To Be Like Him, Or Are You Going To Take Care Of Business?” The We Watch It crew went to the movies this past week with their tickets they scored over a month ago to see Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in IMAX, snagging the best seats in the house. Cody gives us insight on some pretty awesome news, one would say the news is pretty “Sweet” or “Freaking Awesome” or consider this host to be “Lucky!” Next week he will go over this incredible experience that only “Freaking Idiots” would not be impressed by. We learn about the death of the beloved voice actor Kevin Conroy who has voiced the titular character Batman for over three decades. We close the book on Kevin's time here, but we wish the nerd community well as we mourn the loss of a legend that made this character more than an icon. Shannon gives us some insight to some new projects that her favorite young broadway actress, Renee Rapp, is getting into with her EP coming out and a new season of Sex Life of College Girls on HBO Max. But enough about the beginning of the episode, you want to read about the main review the crew has cooked up for Marvel's final installment within their Phase 4 of cinematic releases. You probably want to just know now, WHO IS THE NEW BLACK PANTHER!? Well, it's not my job to tell you that, I can't spoil the movie or the content that these hosts go over. If I did something like that, I would be fired, and I would not want to lose this very important position of description creation for We Watch It that I get so handsomely paid for with snacks, so please don't ask me to divulge any of that unwanted spoiler mess. Anyways… IMDB shares with us the spoiler free storyline of this movie: Queen Ramonda, Shuri, M'Baku, Okoye and the Dora Milaje fight to protect the kingdom of Wakanda from intervening world powers in the wake of King T'Challa's death. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia and Everett Ross and forge a new path for their nation. Listen, take it from me, you want to go see this film. If you have not already, I don't know how you operate in today's day and age without seeing a Marvel movie. You can catch Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in IMAX only in theaters, NOW! The Woman King Costume Designer Gersha Phillips Design The tactile & gorgeous costume's! Oscar winner Viola Davis leads a strong cast into battle in an epic from Gina Prince-Bythewood, inspired by real women warriors. Davis is absolutely mesmerizing as the Agojie's strategist warrior. Costume designer Gersha Phillips outfitted a literal army for “The Woman King.” The film, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival ahead of its theatrical release, stars Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu and Lashana Lynch. Bolstered by strong critical reviews, the film is already part of the awards conversation heading into fall. Set in the 1820s, the historical film tells the story of the Agojie, a group of female warriors who protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey. Phillips was familiar with the concept, having assisted Ruth Carter with research on “Black Panther,” which featured a group of fictional female warriors called the Dora Milaje. “The pitch [for ‘The Woman King'] came as ‘this is the story about the real Dora Milaje,'” Phillips says. Outfitting an army meant creating visual cues to differentiate levels of status and affluence. Signals of wealth in the kingdom included numerous layers of fabrics and jewelry piled onto the body.
