Hey it's Kelly Carvell, welcome to the very first episode of my rebranded podcast: The Lactation Nerd Podcast. Quick question for you, when you were getting prenatal care, did you receive a breast or chest assessment from your provider to check for any risk factors that could complicate your lactation journey? My guess would be that you did not, as most of us don't. It's not standard practice, at least not here in the U.S., but it really needs to be. There are a few markers your provider, or lactation consultant, can look for that could mean you may struggle to produce milk. Knowing prenatally you have low supply indicators could save a baby's life, a new parent's sanity, and give them the opportunity to get comfortable with a combo feeding plan if they would still like to partially provide their milk if they don't end up producing enough. Sadly, many, like my guest Kaia Lacy, don't find out until it is much too late. Meet my guest: Kaia is a motherhood blogger whose focus is infant-feeding with chronic low milk supply, advocating for more low-supply education and research, and family support. She was diagnosed with insufficient glandular tissue (IGT) following the birth of her first child and has since committed herself to amplify the experiences and supporting families like hers. Kaia is currently pursuing a Lactation Counselor Certification through the Healthy Children Project. You can connect with Kaia here: instagram.com/lowsupplymom I'd love for you to join me in my The Lactation Community https://www.facebook.com/groups/successfulbreastfeedingcommunity

On today's episode, we hear the wisdom and words from Autumnn Gaines, who is the subject of an iconic and powerful photo taken during a recent peaceful protest following the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers. The photo is in black and white and strikes emotion among the mothers who've seen it. Today Autumnn joins us on the Successful Breastfeeding Podcast to talk about this picture, that moment, centuries of repression, and her vision for this movement. If you're wondering, as a white listener, how you can be part of this movement, be an authentic ally, and truly be anti-racist, then pay attention. When you are breastfeeding you can feel touched out really easily. The thought of sex is probably way off your radar, and who could blame you? However, you don't have to give up your intimate relationship with your partner - you can still enjoy intimacy and my guest today is the expert in establishing intimacy in a realationship when you're a new parent. Her simple mindset shifts, and tools for newly postpartum couples are exactly what you need to shift this change in your relationship. Samantha Reynolds is a relationship expert and owner of Modern Child Parenting. She helps couples learn how to regain the connection and intimacy they experienced before parenthood. Much of her work is also relevant to expectant parents as she prepares them for the potential challenges a baby brings to a relationship.
