Newborn babies get their first microbiome from their mother's vagina during birth. The baby will become covered with this beneficial bacterial as they come out of the protected environment of the womb, through the birth canal, and to the world beyond. When the baby is born vaginally, they will have a gut microbiome similar to that of their mother's vaginal and fecal flora. This helps set up lifelong gut health. But for babies not born vaginally, there are other ways to help insure good gut health. Join us for a thought-provoking discussion of why microbiome is important and how to help families advocate for procedures that will be beneficial for themselves and their baby. Toni Harman is a graduate of the London Film School and has produced and directed a number of internationally-distributed documentary films, including: MICROBIRTH (about the origins of the human microbiome), FREEDOM FOR BIRTH (about the struggle for women's rights in childbirth), and DOULA! (about the work of birth and postnatal doulas). Toni's extensive research for MICROBIRTH led to her co-authoring the books THE MICROBIRTH EFFECT and YOUR BABY's MICROBIOME. Toni is a professional speaker at international conferences about the science of the microbiome and epigenetics. She also leads the MICROBIOME COURSES online school. Toni combines knowledge gained from researching the subject for ten years with her extensive experience of running educational one-day and multiple-day workshops for adult learners. This is the final episode for the season and it's a GOOD ONE!! In this episode I chat to Toni Harman about the importance of the microbiome. When Toni was pregnant, she wanted a homebirth, and Toni wanted to exclusively breastfeed. Toni ended up with an emergency C-section and struggled to breastfeed. After the birth, she wondered could birth and infant feeding affect a child's long-term health? The answer is yes! We discuss what the microbiome is, why birth preferences are so crucial, and why asking for skin to skin, and carefully considering antibiotics is so important. We talk the importance of poo and mess in birth, the wonder of breast milk microbes, vaginal seeding, and the crucial things to consider if you're having a c-section.Toni has made the film MICROBIRTH, written a book and has created evidence-based courses on this important subject. Listen in as Michelle chats with Toni Harman award-winning documentary filmmaker, author, and digital course creator. Her documentary film, MICROBIRTH has helped parents and professionals around the world understand the infant microbiome. Toni explains what the microbiome is, how it relates to the immune system, and what can be done to protect a baby's microbiome during pregnancy, birth, and early infancy. Together they discuss such things as how a cesarean birth, water birth, a baby born en caul (without the water breaking), breastfeeding, and formula feeding impact the baby's microbiome. Toni also shares how breastmilk is designed to seed and feed the baby's gut microbiome. "So it's this beautiful, fantastic processes, so like a seed and feed process. So birth provides the seeding of the infant microbiome and then breastmilk provides feeding of the infant microbiome. So the feeding with these special sugars. So seed and feed, and that sets up the immune system and that helps protect a baby's health for life."—Toni HarmanAbout Toni Harman:Toni Harman is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, author, and digital course creator. When Toni Harman launched her award-winning documentary, MICROBIRTH, she wanted to shout from the rooftops about the critical microscopic events happening during pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding. She believes that this is critical knowledge that every healthcare professional should know about and should care about to help empower parents with full informed choice. After all, the infant microbiome is a field of science that strongly supports vaginal birth (when possible), immediate skin-to-skin contact, and exclusive breastfeeding. This enables the optimal training of the infant immune system to benefit a child's lifelong health. That's why she created the Microbirth School, an online course offering continuing education for healthcare professionals. In this episode, you’ll learn: How Toni went from filming horror films to filming childbirth (0:35) What is the microbiome (4:46) Supporting a healthy pregnancy (12:43) Being obsessed with cleanliness isn’t always good (17:13) Benefits of living on a farm (19:20) How to support your baby’s microbiome if you have a c-section (25:15) Can a Mom request Swab Seeding? In this episode, we talk with the creator of the award-winning and game-changing documentary, Microbirth, about Lauren's favourite subject – microbiome! We learn how and why moving away from our natural processes, we are destroying our microbiome. Increased rates in caesarean sections, lower breastfeeding rates, a steady increase in birth interventions and no skin-on-skin post-birth are all contributing factors in preventing the baby from accessing the mother's essential microbiome – the bacteria that feeds the immune system in a process called seed and feed, a process that ensures the safe development of the child's immune system. Overuse of antibiotics and antibacterial products is also contributing to the destruction of our collective microbiome, leaving us at risk of pandemics, something predicted in this film in 2014, which we have now seen unfurl in the form of Covid-19. The film itself is life-changing and here we discuss how we are potentially sacrificing the very continuation of the human race with our modern ways, and how we can stop this and make changes to ensure our survival moving forward. A hugely important episode that we urge you all to listen to and hopefully learn from. This episode was basically a re-cap of the documentary called Microbirth. It opened my eyes so much to the importance of a natural birth and breastfeeding and taking the right precautions when a C-section is necessary (also peep Episode 9 of this podcast where Tay explains her birth plan for when she had to have a C-section). It also reminded me of how much cooperation goes on in nature and not everything is all "survival-of-the-fittest" as it's hyped up to be. However, when one thing goes out of balance, it sets off a cascade of effects, and everything feels the ramifications in some way. *spoiler alert* antibiotics majorly cause an imbalance to a once perfect ecosystem. During the episode I also discuss: Why epigenetics actually means we can take our power back The importance of bacterial ecosystems to our survival How we are 90% microbial and 10% mamalian How we evolved with bacteria to form a 'symbiotic superorganism' How having a greater microbial diversity makes you less susceptible to both chronic illness and communicable diseases such as the flu. How antibiotic use can affect brain function in children due to the gut brain connection Again, I highly recommend checking out the documentary Microbirth, it was definitely a wealth of information and put together the story perfectly. Have you ever wondered what a home birth is like? Maybe you know you want one but you don't know what to expect or how to plan one. Maybe the whole idea sounds crazy to you and you're wondering why anyone would want to do that. Wherever you sit with the idea of home birth, this episode is a must-listen! I had the pleasure of interviewing Tay Winterstein, a mom who has experienced both a hospital birth via C-section as well as a home birth vaginally. She gave us the low down on the difference between both experiences and some of the biggest lessons labour taught her. During the episode we discuss: The importance of a birth plan and important things to consider adding into your own Why babies born via C-section should be seeded with the mother's microbiome, or swabbed with the mother's vaginal bacteria to replicate a vaginal birth Why private midwives can be so valuable Birth/labour affirmations The two "M's" to focus on before getting pregnant: mitochondria and the microbiome How even seemingly small birth traumas can affect us into adulthood (which is another reason birth plans are so vital) The energetic change that happens once you become a mother Resources: Tay's website: https://tayswaymovement.com.au/ Tay's instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tays_way_/ Microbirth documentary: http://microbirth.com/
As many of you know, one of the central themes of my recent book, Brain Maker, deals with the importance of method of birth in terms of seeding an infant’s microbiome. We now know, moving ahead, that even issues like immunity and inflammation later in life are significantly impacted by how a child is born. As I did discuss in the book, work by Dr. Maria Dominguez-Bello at New York University centers on this fundamental event in a person’s life, if and how a baby passes through birth canal. Importantly, she seeks to understand how this exposure inoculates the newborn child with the seeds for his or her future microbiome. In today’s interview, I speak with Toni Harman. Toni is a filmmaker and, with her husband, Alex Wakeford, she created a fascinating film, Microbirth, that focuses on just this exact topic (the importance of how we are born). Now, with her new book, Your Baby’s Microbiome, Toni does a deep dive and explores the possible health consequences related to cesarean section versus vaginal birth, in terms of the microbiome. The book is fascinating and we are going to jump right in. From Amazon.com: At least two amazing events happen during childbirth. There’s the obvious main event, which is the emergence of a new human into the world. But then there’s the non-human event that is taking place simultaneously, a crucial event that is not visible to the naked eye, an event that could determine the lifelong health of the baby. This is the seeding of the baby’s microbiome, the community of ‘good’ bacteria that we carry with us throughout our lives. The seeding of the microbiome, along with other processes including breastfeeding, kickstarts the baby’s immune system and helps to protect the infant from disease for its entire lifetime. However, with interventions like use of synthetic oxytocin, antibiotics, C-section and formula feeding, this microbial transfer from the mother to baby is interfered with or bypassed completely. Emerging research shows that bacteria are absolutely vital for human health, and imbalances in the human microbiome significantly contribute to chronic non-transmissible diseases. Drawing on the extensive research they carried out for their documentary film Microbirth, authors Toni Harman and Alex Wakeford reveal a fascinating new view of birth, and how microscopic happenings can have lifelong consequences, both for ourselves, our children – and our species as a whole.
When a baby is born, two amazing things happen. There’s the arrival of a new human into the world which is a momentous, beautiful, incredible event. But most people don’t know that also happening at the same time is the critical transfer of bacteria from mother to baby – this is the “seeding” of the human microbiome. Even more amazing is that there are special sugars in breastmilk that are designed to “feed” the bacteria in the baby’s gut newly arrived from mum. This “seed and feed” process is a hot topic of scientific research right now especially as the latest science is indicating that whether a baby is born vaginally or by C-section, and whether the baby is breastfed or formula fed, these could have ramifications for the child’s lifelong health. Toni and I discussed the importance of the micro biome for developing our future health. It was really interesting to talk to Toni and find out all about her experiences and what led to the discovery of this important part of health. Some of the things we discussed are: What are microbes, the micro biome, and why should we care? How can we alter our micro biome – for better or for worse? How we unwittingly consume antibiotics, without ever taking them from the doctor How the microbes from a vaginal birth are different than a caesarean section, and also the differences when baby is breastfed or formula fed How you can improve yours and your baby’s micro biome if you have had to take antibiotics or have had a caesarean Could the micro biome have an effect on the non-communicable diseases which are on the rise Balancing the “forest” ecosystem in your gut Oligosaccharides in breastmilk Resources: Huffpost Microbiome article Microbirth the film (available to stream online immediately!)
