Fliss and Owain reflect on the week marking the 5th anniversary of the first covid lockdown. They are joined by BBC Wales' education correspondent Bethan Lewis, Bevan Commission director Dr Helen Howson and Swansea University behavioural scientist and public health researcher Simon Williams. They look at the impact Covid had and continues to have in Wales and the effect it could still have in the future.
This is a "can't miss" discussion featuring Professor Ian Walker from Swansea University in Wales and Professor Marco te Brömmelstroet from the University of Amsterdam about their recent paper on Motonormativity, also known as "car brain" or "windshield bias." Among other topics, we discuss Pluralistic Ignorance, which is a social psychology phenomenon where people mistakenly believe that their own private opinions differ from the majority's, leading them to conform to a perceived norm, even if they privately disagree. And this seems to be at the core of the challenge with Motonormativity, when it comes to people wanting a different outcome and way of life.Thank you so much for tuning in! I recently had the privilege of speaking with Dr. Paddy McQueen from Swansea University to discuss a fascinating paper he had authored exploring the ethical dilemmas of supporting talented children. Our conversation explored the philosophical questions about childhood, talent development, and the responsibilities we have as parents, coaches and policy makers. Paddy introduced me to three different views of childhood - 'the sapling view' (seeing childhood merely as preparation for adulthood), 'the fruit view' (seeing childhood as superior to adulthood), and 'the caterpillar view' (seeing childhood and adulthood as distinctly valuable stages). These perspectives create different frameworks for thinking about how we should approach the sport experience for children. We discussed the tension between prioritising intrinsic childhood goods like free play, fun and social connection, versus instrumental goods that prepare children for adult success. The conversation revealed how deeply our cultural mindset about childhood affects the decisions we make in youth sports—often leading to an industrialised approach that sacrifices childhood experiences for potential future achievements that statistically few will attain. My three key takeaways from the conversation:How we view childhood fundamentally shapes our approach to talent development—each perspective (sapling, fruit, or caterpillar) leads to different choices. The sacrifices required for "talent maximisation" often undermine intrinsic childhood goods that cannot be recovered later in life.Playful, enjoyable sporting experiences may actually be more effective for skill development than highly structured, adult-centric training methods. If you found these ideas thought-provoking, I invite you to join my learning group called 'The Guild of Ecological Explorers' by heading to www.thetalentequation.co.uk and clicking on the 'join a learning group' button. There you'll connect with others who are exploring these connections between philosophy, psychology, and sports developmentBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-talent-equation-podcast--2186775/support.
Investigative reporter Bob Woodward once noted that assassination was the Scarlett letter of American politics because targeted killings challenge the image of the United States as a liberal democracy and the driving force behind a rules-based international order. In his new book, Luca Trenta documents how assassination and assassination attempts have been a persistent feature in US foreign policy. The US government has relied on a variety of direct methods as well as more indirectly laying the groundwork for local assassins. Using primary documents and interviews, The President's Kill List meticulously documents how policymakers decided on assassination and the level of Presidential control over these decisions. The book analyzes the evolution of assassination policies and reveals how successive administrations - through private justifications and public legitimations - ensured that assassination remained an available tool. Artificial intelligence tools have been in the headlines and yet we are still learning who opts to use such tools and why. On this episode, we talk with David Playfoot of Swansea University in the United Kingdom about his work on student use of AI tools.
Send us a textForget everything you thought you knew about digital printing's limitations. In this eye-opening conversation, Karl Forbes from Xaar and Martin Burns from Nazdar unveil how ultra-high viscosity inkjet technology is transforming the landscape of corrugated printing—delivering unprecedented quality, efficiency, and economic viability. The breakthrough revolves around a fundamental shift: increasing ink viscosity from the traditional 2-12 centipoise to an astonishing 100 centipoise at jetting temperature. This tenfold increase radically alters ink-substrate interaction, eliminating the challenges that have historically hindered inkjet's adoption in corrugated packaging. Why This Matters for Corrugated PrintingTraditional inkjet inks struggle on porous substrates like corrugated cardboard. The pigment absorbs quickly, leading to color loss, lack of precision, and inconsistent print quality. The Xaar-Nazdar innovation changes this completely. With ultra-high viscosity inks, the pigment remains on the surface, producing sharper details, vibrant colors comparable to flexographic printing, and superior overall results.Backed by independent research from Swansea University, this technology not only enhances print performance but does so with reduced ink consumption, faster drying times, and lower energy requirements. In many cases, it even eliminates the need for substrate pre-treatment, streamlining the production process.Beyond Incremental Improvement: A Game-Changer for the IndustryThis is not just an enhancement—it's a paradigm shift. Corrugated packaging printers can now achieve cost-effective, high-quality digital printing without the compromises that previously made inkjet unfeasible. The technology unlocks new creative and functional possibilities, allowing for greater customization, shorter production runs, and more sustainable manufacturing practices. The collaboration between Xaar's expertise in inkjet printheads and Nazdar's mastery of ink formulation showcases the power of strategic innovation. In just 12 months, the partnership has overcome technical barriers that hindered inkjet's viability in the corrugated sector for years.Unlocking the Future of Corrugated PackagingThe future of corrugated printing is here, and it's powered by ultra-high viscosity inkjet. Research shows that consistent, authoritative at-home parenting impacts children's learning and educational outcomes. At times though, a prevailing culture within education can mean parents receive insufficient support, and are even unfairly labelled and criticised. Similarly, the false narrative that very young children don't use digital technology can be another obstacle to understanding not just the nature of their tech use, but also its possible benefits when it comes to learning and development. In episode three of season 10, Vicki is joined by Janet Goodall – researcher and Professor of Education at Swansea University's School of Social Science – to discuss all things parental engagement, as well as her recent work into early years' tech use.Talking points:In the context of children's learning, is there really such a thing as ‘best practice' when it comes to parental engagement? How can schools do more to support parental engagement, and are they overly constrained by current models of measuring parents' involvement? What are the issues of mythologising a ‘tech-free' past when it comes to young children?Tech Shock is a Parent Zone production. This episode features Amy Brown (Marie Curie Research Centre, Division of Population Medicine, School of Medicine, Cardiff University, Cardiff, UK. Swansea University Medical School, Swansea University, Swansea, UK) What is already known about the topic? The third World Health Organization Global Patient Safety Challenge ‘Medication without harm', emphasises the need for improved infrastructure through better reporting practices and cross-organisational learning from adverse events and near misses. Medication is implicated in one-fifth of serious palliative care patient safety incidents, with approximately 25% of these incidents involving continuous subcutaneous infusions. Inadequate analysis of continuous subcutaneous infusions as safety-critical, risk-prone interventions dependent on complex structural and human factor issues is a lost opportunity for learning. What this paper adds? Continuous subcutaneous infusion incidents occur across all settings including the home, hospices and hospitals and particularly after the transfer of patients between settings with harm present in nearly three-quarters of reports. Multiple points of system failure were identified in continuous subcutaneous infusion incident reports including monitoring and supply (405, 31%), administration (383, 29%) and prescribing (268, 20%); recurring contributory factors included discontinuity of care within and between care settings, inadequate time, inadequate staffing and unfamiliarity with protocols. Narrative descriptions of psychological and social harm, alongside physical harm risk, are not being adequately recognised or responded to through existing approaches to measure harm in palliative care, hindering learning in practice Implications for practice, theory, or policy The structural changes needed to minimise harm and maximise safety in palliative care are likely to be replicated in other parts of the world where patient safety reporting practices are less well established, for example, shifting from focussing on lack of experience and competency at an individual practitioner-level to addressing deficits in working environments and infrastructures for care provision. When patients move between care locations, more attention should be given to the timeliness and effective transfer of medication management (e.g. if someone is discharged from hospital to a care home that rarely uses continuous subcutaneous infusions for palliative care, this needs to be preceded by refreshing staff skills and ensuring they can access further community support if needed). Professional training and further research are needed to increase quality of reporting of psychological and social harms (including for families and other stakeholders involved) to facilitate organisational learning and pinpoint precise targets for further improvement. There is great power in our ability to observe the world around us. We must make time to stop and see, for we never know when a small observation leads to a great encounter with truth. Students need to be trained in the way to discover truth by developing the naturalists ability to take an interest in what they can observe.Naturalists like John Muir, Wendell Berry, Jacques Cousteau and Dian Fossey can show us all how to have greater appreciation for the world. It's one of - if not the - most widely recognised histories of Wales. Irrespective of language, religion, or region, almost every child in Wales will have learnt about the infamous Welsh Not. How could a simple board on string, of which few actual examples persist, continue to be a touchstone subject for so many in modern Wales? Friend of the pod, and Professor at Swansea University, Martin Johnes has just published the definitive analysis of this disputed object. More than just cultural or educational history, the story is one dipped in politics and wrapped in religion and challenges common ideas of who the protagonists and the antagonists were in the ongoing story of keeping yr hen iaith alive. We're delighted to be joined by Martin to discuss the Welsh Not, and you can find out more from him here: https://x.com/martinjohnes The book is available to buy here: https://www.uwp.co.uk/book/welsh-not/ Or read for free in PDF form here: https://www.uwp.co.uk/app/uploads/9781837721818_WEB.pdf As always, you can find the latest from us on the socials @hiraethpod, including BlueSky here: https://bsky.app/profile/hiraethpod.bsky.social We hope you find this podcast interesting and useful. Dr Andrew Thomas is a senior lecturer of psychology at Swansea University and a writer. The topic of involuntarily celibates is a spicy one. Half of the internet fears them and the other half pities them, very few have researched about why these communities come together and who constitutes them. What does it mean to be Welsh? The writer Jan Morris said Wales was ‘a distinctly separate and often vehement idea'. But what is that idea? Do you need to understand Welsh to grasp it? How is Wales … different? And is it going to become even more unlike England? Ros Taylor talks to Swansea University professor Martin Johnes and Plaid Cymru Senedd member Heledd Fychan about the history of the Welsh nationalist movement and the future of the Welsh language. ‘There's lots of angst with being Welsh.' — Heledd Fychan, Plaid Cymru Senedd member ‘The idea that you should take decisions about Wales in Wales has become a political norm. Has devolution made any practical difference to life in Wales? Probably not, to be honest.' — Prof Martin Johnes ‘Part of the problem is that in many ways we have a one-party state in Wales… Wales is a very small place and Wales suffers from the fact it doesn't have a diversity of opinions.' — Martin Johnes ‘Can you believe that in 2024, despite 25 years of devolution, it's not been normalised that children in Wales should learn Welsh history?' — Heledd Fychan JAM TOMORROW is written and presented by Ros Taylor. In episode 253 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Dr Ashley Frawley. Ashley is currently Visiting Researcher in the Centre for Parenting Culture Studies at the University of Kent, as well as Visiting Research Fellow at the MCC Brussels in Belgium. She was also previously Associate Professor of Sociology and Social Policy at Swansea University until 2023. She is the author of Semiotics of Happiness: rhetorical beginnings of a public problem published by Bloomsbury in 2015 and the newly released Significant Emotions, published in January 2024. She is also the host of her own podcast, ‘Based AF', a columnist for Compact Magazine and COO of Sublation Media. In this episode we discuss: her route into academia and how a chance email sent to her idol Frank Furedi ended up in working with the man himself and to the she holds at the University of Kent today, her critiques of ‘therapy culture' in the mainstream mental health conversation and her view that there is NOT an epidemic of mental illness in the world right now. We also discuss an article she wrote for Compact Magazine on the overreach of discourse around ‘neurodiversity' and where she sits on the debate currently being had on the impact of smartphones and social media on young people's mental health. For Ashley's mental health (which she disagrees with the term mental health journey itself), we discuss an eating disorder she lived with from the age of 14-21 years old, how viewing it as a health issue was not helping her tackle it initially and how a change in her outlook on the condition, allowed her to get a handle on it and eventually overcome it. Building fitness in the long term is quite a simple equation. You workout, and then you recover. If you get the balance of these two right, you should see a steady upward progress over time. Most folks I know and work with are pretty good at the training part, but maybe they could do better on the recovery side. I don't know about you, but over the years I've come to appreciate the recovery part a lot more! Fortunately, my guest today is an expert in recovery. Dr Natalie Brown (who you may remember from her podcast with me on menopause a few months ago) has done an awful lot of research on this topic. Throughout Natalie's career working in elite sport, recovery has been a primary focus to optimise performance. Since completing her PhD, Natalie has continued to implement recovery strategies in practice, alongside lecturing at Swansea University on this topic. Natalie's approach to recovery is underpinned by understanding what you are recovering from and ensuring fundamentals of sleep, nutrition and stress reduction are in place when approaching recovery in sport. How long does it take to recover from an Ironman? It depends! (1:55) If you truly believe a recovery process works then it probably does for you (27.35) You don't need wearables to monitor your recovery (35:14) Why you might feel like you are getting a cold when tapering for an event (39:32) How to make sure you don't get ill after a big event (46:39) There's no evidence that recovery is slower in older athletes (58:00) Menopause DOES impact the ability to recover (1:01:50) The 3 TOP ways to recover, and they are all FREE (1:05:58) To find out more about Natalie Brown and her work please visit these channels: Instagram Optimal.Period Website www.optimalperiod.com, You can find some other great resources using the following links: Podcasts The Female Athlete, For continued education please check out Menstrual cycle online coaching modules: UK Coaching resources I also asked Natalie to recommend a book. The virtue of prudence is one of the four cardinal virtues, and yet, it is often overlooked. Prudence is the virtue of making wise, reasoned decisions, absorbing the collected wisdom of the Western canon and applying that wisdom to the situation at hand.In this talk from the Conference of Miletus, Matthew Ogle, Head of Classical Education at Thales Academy, examines the virtue of prudence and provides three points of application for teachers: 1) Model the love and joy that should accompany classical education; 2) Encourage curiosity and wonder through study and careful lesson planning; and 3) Continue the conversation from class and into the real world.Mr. Ogle received a B.S. in Marine Biology from Swansea University in Wales and a M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. Mr. Ogle serves as Head of Classical Education for all campuses and is the Assistant Administrator of Thales Academy Rolesville JH/HS. Matt Ogle delivered this conference presentation at the Conference of Miletus on July 8, 2024.The Conference of Miletus is a series of short lectures from members of the Thales Academy leadership team discussing what is true, what is good, and what is beautiful and the importance of these transcendental ideas to classical education.

Episode 141 returns to the contemporary era of Disney Feature Animation with this discussion of the computer-animated musical blockbuster Frozen (Chris Buck & Jennifer Lee, 2013), a fairytale film of female empowerment that is widely credited with ushering in Disney's Third Golden Age of animated features after the ‘Classic' Disney period and earlier Disney Renaissance. The special guest for this instalment is Dr Eve Benhamou, teaching fellow in Film Studies at the University Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3, France who has previously taught at the Bristol School of Animation and Swansea University. Eve's research concerns the intersection of Disney, Hollywood, and gender - ideas central to her first monograph Contemporary Disney Animation: Genre, Gender and Hollywood (EUP, 2022) which examines the “multifaceted interactions between animated films, Disney properties such as Pixar and Marvel, and popular genres including the romantic comedy, the superhero film and the cop buddy film.” Topics for this episode include Frozen's negotiation of the longstanding Disney formula and how such a blueprint impacts the film's identity as both ‘classic' and ‘typical' Disney; gender, genre, and the portrayal of girl power and sisterhood through the Anna/Elsa relationship; recent turns towards Baroque aesthetics in Disney's post-Frozen computer-animated features; stylistic overlaps with the musical performances of Wicked; and what the sustained cultural power of Frozen has to say about the Disney corporation in twenty-first-century America. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

We explore the intricate connections between nutrition and mental health, gaining valuable insights into how a plant-based diet can nourish not only the body but also the mind and spirit. “When I was diagnosed, I came across all of this research, and luckily for me, Professor Jelinek had pulled that work together into the Overcoming MS program. So there were dietary recommendations around a whole food plant-based diet, and the program also includes stress management, which is anti-inflammatory. So meditation, mindfulness, and regular exercise. I came across that program, and that was really what led me to change my diet immediately to pretty much plant-based.” - Dr. Rachael Hunter What we discuss in this episode: - How plant-based eating can improve one's relationship with food. - Dr. Hunter's symptoms before being diagnosed with MS. - The connection between inflammation and MS. - The lifestyle changes Dr. Hunter made after her diagnosis and the results of those changes. - How the human body responds to optimism. - Stress and the nervous system. - The importance of removing toxicity from one's life. It's Friday, December 15th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) U.S. Muslim family arrested, accused of beating son who converted to Christianity A Muslim family was arrested in Nashville, Tennessee, after a juvenile victim told authorities his mother, father, and brother attacked him for converting to the Christian faith, reports FaithWire.com. According to an arrest warrant, the boy was purportedly punched in the face and spit at by his mother, father, and brother; the mother is also accused of scratching the back of one of the victim's hands with a knife, reports WZTV. During the attack, the young man was allegedly urged to renounce his Christian beliefs and proclaim Islam. Authorities became aware of the situation after his employer reportedly expressed concern. When police arrived for a welfare check on December 11th, they found the boy with injuries, including lumps on his face and scratches. The young man was transported to the hospital. Meanwhile, the 57-year-old father, Nick Kadum, the 46-year-old mother, Rawaa, and their 29-year-old son, John, were charged over the incident. In John 15:18-19, Jesus said, “If the world hates you, remember that it hated Me first. The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you.” Hamas' plot against Europe foiled Yesterday, German police arrested three suspected members of Hamas in Berlin accused of preparing an attack against Jewish targets in Europe, reports The Daily Mail. German prosecutors said the three men, along with another suspect arrested in the Netherlands, were said to have begun preparing a weapons cache in the German capital where arms would be “kept in a state of readiness in view of potential terrorist attacks against Jewish institutions in Europe.” News of these arrests came after Danish authorities said they too had prevented a terror attack, arresting three more suspects. Biden forgives another $4.8 billion in student debt On December 6th, the Biden administration announced that it would forgive an additional $4.8 billion in student loan debt for 80,300 borrowers, bringing the total taxpayer burden to $132 billion, reports The Epoch Times. President Biden said, "I won't back down from using every tool at our disposal to get student loan borrowers the relief they need to reach their dreams.” His administration is undeterred by the recent Supreme Court decision to block a wide-ranging initiative to cancel up to $20,000 in debt per student. Powerful pre-Christmas storm to pound 20 states Christmas travel is getting underway this weekend, but the FOX Forecast Center is tracking a powerful pre-holiday storm that will impact millions in at least 20 states as it slides up the East Coast this weekend and into early next week, slamming the region with heavy rain and strong wind. So, if you're among the more than 115 million Americans expected to travel 50 miles or more this Christmas season, you'll want to prepare for delays on the roads and at some of our nation's busiest airports if your travels take you to the East. Surprising number of men & women open to multiple partners or spouses So much for monogamy. A new study by researchers from Swansea University in the United Kingdom reveals that a third of men and one in 10 women are open to having more than one romantic partner — at the same time, reports StudyFinds.org. The study, which involved 393 heterosexual men and women, uncovered varying levels of “openness” to these arrangements. Approximately 33 percent of men surveyed in the U.K. expressed a willingness to consider the idea of having more than one wife or long-term girlfriend in a committed partnership if it were legal and consensual. By contrast, only 11 percent of women indicated a similar openness to the concept of polygamous faux marriage. Hebrews 13:4 says, “Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.” Census now demanding "sex at birth" and "current gender" The U.S. Census Bureau is adding demands for every person in households to reveal their "sex at birth" and their "current gender," as if that could be changed, reports WorldNetDaily.com. The additions have prompted a warning about the ongoing loss of privacy Americans are sustaining. John Whitehead, a constitutional attorney and chief of The Rutherford Institute, warned, "The potential for abuse is grave." The newest problem concerns the "mandatory" American Community Survey, which is sent to households monthly. This is in addition to the census done every 10 years to estimate the population of the nation, its states and cities. The Rutherford Institute has posted online a form letter of complaint through which citizens can complain to census officials about the questions. Christian group uplifting families devastated by Hamas And finally, a Christian organization is working to help an Israeli agricultural community described in the Bible as a resting place for King David's warriors that was left devastated in the aftermath of Hamas' terrorist attacks, reports The Christian Post. CityServe is a non-profit that mobilizes local churches and partnering organizations to bring relief to communities left devastated by war or natural disasters. CityServe's Vice President of Government Relations, Todd Lamphere, explained that standing with Israel is one of the organization's 10 initiatives for creating community transformation. CityServe is investing in Ein HaBesor, an Israeli agricultural community -- near the Gaza border that accounts for over 60% of Israel's produce. Hamas terrorists attacked the community during its October 7 strike in southern Israel, killing at least 1,200 people, including 31 Americans.
