Have you heard of an Ectopic Pregnancy? An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants and grows outside the main cavity of the uterus. An ectopic pregnancy most often occurs in a fallopian tube, which carries eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. This type of ectopic pregnancy is called a tubal pregnancy. Today's guest experienced an ectopic pregnancy that was discovered during her first prenatal visit and would need surgery.  The morning of her surgery date her fallopian tube ruptured causing internal bleeding and changed her.  Ashlee Epps found out she was pregnant with her second baby after losing her job, being in law school, and her husband's work hours being reduced.  She was stressed with all that was going on in her life.  After losing her baby she went through a “why” and denial period and felt very alone. Not all fertility treatments end in success.  Some end in undetermined infertility and unsuccessful IUI and IVF cycles. Today's guest experienced unexplained infertility and underwent fertility treatments.  After going through an IUI and 2 IVF cycles that were unsuccessful, she and her husband decided to take a break from fertility treatments and decided to adopt.  The adoption process was an immediate success.  Juauna Lewis decided to try another IVF round, but that was also unsuccessful.  To continue to grow her family, she turned to foster care to adoption and added another two boys to her family.  Juauna is now the mom to 3 sweet little boys who she considers the pot of gold at the end of her rainbow of failed fertility treatments and losses. In today's episode we discuss her decision to stop fertility treatments and turn to adoption, why foster to adoption is another option to growing your family, and how motherhood is not defined if you birth children from your body. This episode is for you to listen to if you have had a failed IVF experience, are curious about adoption or fostering to adopt, and for inspiration that motherhood comes in many forms even if you don't birth the baby. What if you had the option not to be the primary custodial parent?  Would you decline out of obligation to the belief that a good Black mama would never choose to leave their children in the care of others, even the other parent?  How does a Black mother respond when what's best for her or her destiny clashes with cultural norms?   In this Mother's Day episode, I shared my journey with Dem Black Mamas Podcast about the complexities and challenges of non-custodial parenting and Black motherhood. Hey, friend. Hello, Change Makers. In the words of Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown—Hey, Black girl. We often say it takes a village, but let's be clear—villages don't build themselves. They're shaped, sustained, and often revived by Black mothers who know what it means to care, connect, and carry more than their share. Today's guest, Jetaun Woodley, didn't just recognize the gap—she built something from it. As a veteran communications strategist and Senior Director at Planned Parenthood, Jetaun has spent her career making sure messages that matter reach the right people. But it's her work outside the boardroom that's building legacy: creating H.U. Mommies, a thriving community of over 800 Hamptonian mothers who show up for one another, online and in real life. In this episode, we're unpacking how Black motherhood is often the foundation of community organizing, mutual care, and everyday advocacy. From navigating health care systems and education challenges to disaster relief and doula recommendations, these mothers are doing far more than sharing parenting tips—they're reshaping what support looks like. Jetaun joins Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown and me for a conversation that's both grounding and galvanizing. We talk about the power of peer support, the courage it takes to create a space when one doesn't exist, and what it looks like to protect and evolve a community you've built—especially when the work is personal. If you've ever questioned whether your care counts or whether creating something small could really matter, this conversation is your reminder: it already does. Listen now and be sure to grab the National Black Girl Month™ Toolkit for more ways to connect at nationalblackgirlmonth.com. To our Hampton fam—we see you. And if you're a mama looking for your people, you just might find them in H.U. Mommies. Currently, Jetaun serves as Senior Director of Brand Strategy & Projects at Planned Parenthood Federation of America, a reproductive health care nonprofit organization. Prior to joining PPFA, Jetaun served as Director of Network Marketing & Communications for National Court Appointed Special Advocate/Guardian ad Litem (CASA/GAL) Association for Children, a non-profit organization that supports and promotes court-appointed volunteer advocacy so every child who has experienced abuse or neglect can be safe, have a permanent home, and the opportunity to thrive. Following the birth of her son in 2015, Jetaun started HU Mommies Group - a support group for Hampton University alumnae. The goal of the group is to share advice, empower Black women, and provide a listening ear as Hamptonians embrace and embark on their motherhood journey. We made it yall! We have made it to the end of the year, and I'm happy to say we made it whole. Many of us started this year with the expectation of greatness. Ambition to take on the world. Start that new business, write that new book, launch that new product, travel to a new country, and just live a life after loss that was unimaginable. We have entered into a new year, and a new decade.  Another opportunity to live out our purpose for our lives, for our angel babies, and future babies.  It is a time to continue on the journey to healing, restoration, with hope and peace. In today's episode I share my word of the year and a recap of all that was accomplished with Sisters in Loss in 2019 and my goals for 2020 for the podcast and business. Resilience means the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. the ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape; elasticity. Resilience means knowing how to cope in spite of setbacks, or barriers, or limited resources. Resilience is a measure of how much you want something and how much you are willing, and able, to overcome obstacles to get it. It has to do with your emotional strength. After losing babies many times we don't even know our own strength.  But we keep on getting up, placing our feet on the floor, and pressing on time after time when it gets tough.  We go two steps forward and 3 steps back. We move from trauma to trauma and not realize it until its too late.  We get the positive pregnancy test we had been praying for only to get bad news weeks later. We make it the end of our pregnancy, birth our rainbow baby, and are depressed because we continue to mourn the baby we lost.  When I think of resiliency I think of you. Yes, you girl. Yes, you my Sister in Loss.   You continue to press on, recover quickly, and have the emotional strength to overcome life's obstacles and challenges.  You have made it your mission to help others on this journey. You have dedicated your life back to Jesus to serving him until your husband and future children get here. Resilience is you!  Resilience is me! But we know that there is a disparity. According to the CDC: Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women. Multiple factors contribute to these disparities, such as variation in quality healthcare, underlying chronic conditions, structural racism, and implicit bias................................We can do our part by believing and supporting black moms. Even more jarring, Black women in particular are much more likely to die from childbirth or suffer life-threatening complications. In Texas alone, which is responsible for 1 in 10 of the nation's births, a report released in 2022 found that Black women there are twice as likely to die as their White peers. The report also found that aspiring Black parents are at even greater risk of experiencing serious complications during childbirth, shouldering a disproportionate burden of close calls. And yet, the report found that 90 percent of those deaths are preventable. Today on “Post Reports,” reporter Akilah Johnson introduces us to Mimi Bingham, Alyse Hamlin and a movement of Black birth workers in Houston who are taking life into their own hands – and how they're fighting back and finding workarounds, one birth at a time. What happens when your infant child has medical needs you need to tend to, but there is no paid family medical leave in place? You get pushed out of the workforce, an that is exactly what happened to Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, Executive Director and Co-founder of MomsRising. It was this event, which Kristin appropriately calls an unforeseen "health crisis" that pushed Kristin out of the workforce. She found herself unemployed, taking care of an infant and going down a rabbit hole where she went looking for answers (and stats!) about what moms were facing in the United States... surely she wasn't the only one going through this... That stressful and life-changing event that led to her co-creating and leading MomsRising, a movement of more than a million people working to increase family economic security, stop discrimination, and build a nation where everyone can thrive.  In this episode, Diana has a candid conversation with Kristin about how heer personal experiences led her to join other moms to be advocates for change. Today, Kristin and the entire MomsRising team work hard to ensure that moms' voices and experiences are taken into account when policymakers (at the state and federal level -- yes even the White House!) listen to moms when they're crafting policies. In this powerful conversation they also discuss: Why moms' voices and stories matter What's at stake in the 2024 elections Why we should be vigilant and fight disinformation Why "parental rights" movements like M4L are not winning MomsRising's efforts to mobilize moms all over the country  .... Maternal mental health has a profound impact on individuals, couples, families, children, and our society as a whole. It's important that every parent, regardless of race, color, or ethnicity, has access to resources and support when they need it most, and that just isn't the case in our country. Today's conversation focuses on maternal mental health in the Black community, and our perspective comes from a dedicated, mission-driven mental health provider who wants to make a difference in the lives of Black mothers. There is so much for us to learn and understand about this topic, so join us now for the conversation.  Keisha Reaves is the owner and clinical director of Push Thru Therapy. With more than 16 years in the mental health profession, she is now a Certified Perinatal Mental Health provider serving birthing parents who are trying to conceive, have fertility issues, experience infant loss, are transitioning into parenthood, and those with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. She has volunteered with Northside Hospital's Infant Loss/ Bereavement Group and served for three years on the Postpartum Support International Georgia Chapter Board as the Training Coordinator, as well as currently volunteering as an educator to providers treating birthing parents in their practices. She is a facilitator for the Mocha Moms Group at the Atlanta Birth Center, and she facilitates a Black Moms group through Push Thru Therapy. In today's episode, Keisha shares her personal story, along with giving us perspective on the factors that make Black maternal mental health and reproductive education so vitally important. She is intensely passionate about maternal mental health and strives to spread information, education, resources, and support to women of color.  Show Highlights: How Keisha's journey brought her to the important work she does today How Keisha's first pregnancy played out with many signs of postpartum depression and anxiety—and she didn't realize it at the time How she experienced sleep deprivation, brain fog, feelings of isolation, and had no friends and family close by to help How Keisha felt shame and stigma around seeking therapy as a mental health clinician–and why she determined to help others through her work What Keisha sees as gaps in adequate support for Black women—and why so many people of color are afraid to ask for the help they need How Black mothers in the South experience societal and generational pressure to a greater degree because of the history of slavery Why antepartum anxiety is a big challenge for many mothers How Keisha's second pregnancy was a different experience because she was proactive and had support in place How unique worries and concerns (and anxiety) show up for Black mothers in today's world–and why Keisha focuses on helping Black mothers to “be present in the joy of motherhood” How a therapist who “looks like me” can be more helpful with sympathy and empathy What Keisha would like to see in our progress with maternal mental health What steps Keisha is taking now in her work to reach more people with education and information, both for mental health providers and mothers Resources: Connect with Keisha: Website, Push Thru Therapy Website, Instagram, Push Thru Mom Instagram Visit www.postpartum.net for resources and support!  Visit www.postpartum.net/professionals/certificate-trainings/ for information on the grief course.   Visit my website, www.wellmindperinatal.com, for more information, resources, and courses you can take today! Why is it so dangerous to have Black babies in America?April 11-17th is Black Maternal Health Week, and so we are replaying one of our favourite episodes from 2021 with guest Representative Lauren Underwood of Illinois, a nurse and former senior advisor to President Obama. We discuss how this country is failing Black mothers, and her incredible Momnibus Act, a suite of 12 bills designed to improve Black maternal health outcomes in America, where Black women are dying in or after childbirth at 3x-4x rates of white women. In this incredible conversation, Rep. Underwood goes deep to help us understand the complexities of the problem, the crushing personal inspiration for her work, and what we can all do to help.-----------Have feedback or questions?
