OK, so it's not really as dramatic as the title suggests… We had a cancellation this week for a great episode, so what we thought we would do is give listeners to the main podcast an episode of the offshoot so they can see what it's all about. This is definitely not replacing the existing podcast, we just had a gap. We are back on that horse next week.Meet Jen Bowman of IGT fame. Jen talks us through her choices to take to a deserted tropical island: 3 albums3 books3 movies 1 song1 pet1 object1 dessert…and one piece of advice to give her younger self. Have to say, this episode is completely worth it just for the pet part. Brilliant.Anyway, you can find the RSS for the offshoot here: https://feeds.captivate.fm/tgf-did/And it's available at all good podcast outlets. Probably the dodgy ones too. And if you have a guest suggestion, we are all ears. Fintan especially, that's why he keeps his hair all bushy.
From a very unexpected pregnancy to navigating a challenging first birth experience, Shannon joins us today to share the steps she took to achieve a successful VBAC. Shannon describes pregnancy with Ehlers–Danlos Syndrome and insufficient glandular tissue (IGT). She was able to seek support and get the proper progesterone supplementation with her second pregnancy to help with her breastfeeding goals. Though she hadn't had a prior history of high blood pressure, Shannon was medically induced at 38 weeks for high readings. With the help of her incredible doula and a patient team, Shannon was able to make wise decisions around her induction plan. Her labor was over 48 hours, but she pushed for just 30 minutes! Even with some tearing and postpartum hemorrhaging after birth, Shannon has been thrilled with her VBAC outcome and postpartum recovery this time around. How to VBAC: The Ultimate Prep Course for ParentsThe VBAC Link Doula DirectorySupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vbac-link/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
This week I take a fresh look at European Classification Systems, going into detail on the history of how and why they evolved, what the current EU scheme is based on, and what the major wine nations' systems are structured (and how they differ from what the EU would like them to look like!). I discuss: How Europe classified its wines to protect the names of specific products and link them to their place of origin, to the benefit of consumers and producers. A history of wine classifications from the monks in medieval Burgundy to the winemakers of Tokaj in the 1600s to Chianti, Port, and Bordeaux in the 1700s and 1800s. A detailed look at the evolution of the French classification system. I go through the steps that the French took to prevent fraud, protect the origin of their wines, and ultimately create the system off which the EU system is based. I address the EU system with its two main categories: -Wine without a geographic origin (table wine) -Wine with a geographic origin: Protected Geographical Indication (PGI): At least 85% of the grapes used have to come exclusively from the geographical area where the wine is actually made. These wines cover large areas, and a lot of grapes and winemaking methods are permitted. There is only a minor influence of place of origin Protected Designation of Origin (PDO): Every part of the production, processing and preparation process must take place in the specific region. Grapes have to come exclusively from the geographical area where the wine is made. Origin and terroir are essential to the identity of the wine. Then I review the major countries' classification categories France: Vin de France=Table wine IGP, indication géographique protégée (PGI) AOP=appellation d'origine protégée, often called AOC (contrôlée) (PDO) Italy: Vino=Table Wine IGP=indicazione geografica protetta, producers frequently use the old IGT = indicazione geografica tipica (PGI) DOC = denominazione di origine controllata (PDO) DOCG = denominazione di origine controllata e garantita (PDO) DOP = denominazione di origine protetta, the new name, conforming to the EU standard that includes DOC and DOCG. DOP is rarely used (PDO) Spain: Vino de España=Table wine IGP / VT = indicación geográfica protegida, usually called vino de la tierra (VT) (PGI) VC = vino de calidad con indicación geográfica (PDO) DO (DOP) = denominación de origen, sometimes called DOP (PDO) DOCa = denominación de origen calificada (PDO) VP = vino de pago (PDO) Germany Deutscher Wein =Table wine Landwein =PGI Qualitätswein (also called Qba from the 13 regions, PDO) Prädikatswein – Prädikat means special attribute and refers to the ripeness of the grapes and the type of harvest. Pradikat levels: Dry or sweet: Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese Sweet (expensive and rare): Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese, Eiswein Other terms: Trocken is dry, Halbtrocken is “Half Dry” or “Off-Dry, “Feinherb” is an unofficial term for off-dry wine The VDP is a German marketing organization that includes many of the country's top producers. Producers can use the VDP eagle and the VDP classifications WITH “Qualitätswein” or “Prädikatswein” · Gutswein: First wines of a wine year to be bottled and sold, Estate-grown grapes · Ortsweine: Village wines · Erste Lage: Premier Cru wine from first-class vineyards · Grosse Lage: Grand cru or highest quality German vineyards. Dry wines within this category are called Grosse Gewächs or GG Portugal (I don't discuss in the show because it follows the French/EU model) Vinho=Table Wine IGP = indicação geográfica protegida, often called vinho regional (PGI) DOP = denominação de origem protegida, still sometimes called DOC, denominação de origem controlada (PDO) _________________________________________________ Full show notes and all back episodes are on Patreon. Hypoplasia or IGT is not often spoken about, but there are estimates that up to 1 in 10 of us have insufficient breast tissue to exclusively breastfeed. Katie found out that she was one of those people when she sought help after her son, Ezra, lost 11% of his birth rate in a matter of days. The advice she received from midwives and health visitors was conflicting and confusing, leading to Katie mixed feeding, taking Domperidone and trying triple feeding for a few weeks. It was only when Katie was able to come to terms with bottle feeding Ezra, and see breastfeeding not as a source of nutrition, but as a bonding experience, that they were able to settle into a more comfortable relationship. Ezra is now two years old and still happily nursing.Resources - Making More Milk: The Breastfeeding Guide to Increasing Your Milk Production, 2nd Edition (lllgbbooks.co.uk) Essay on IGT by ABM breastfeeding counsellor Philippa Lomas - https://www.aims.org.uk/journal/item/igt#:~:text=Breastfeeding%20with%20Insufficient%20Glandular%20Tissue.%20ISSN%202516-5852%20(Online)%20To%20readFinding Sufficiency: Breastfeeding with insufficient glandular tissue (lllgbbooks.co.uk)My new book, ‘Supporting the Transition from Breastfeeding: a Guide to Weaning for Professionals, Supporters and Parents', is out now.You can get 10% off the book at the Jessica Kingsley press website, that's uk.jkp.com using the code MMPE10 at checkout.Follow me on Twitter @MakesMilk and on Instagram @emmapickettibclc or find out more on my website www.emmapickettbreastfeedingsupport.comThis podcast is presented by Emma Pickett IBCLC, and produced by Emily Crosby Media.

Send us a Text Message. In this episode I'm joined by Raylea, a first-time mom to baby Ellie, who faced more challenges in her first week of motherhood than many of us can imagine. After a significant weight loss of 12% by day three, the stress began to mount. Ellie's weight loss was compounded by jaundice and a diagnosis that would change Raylea's feeding journey: known as Insufficient Glandular Tissue or underdevelopment of the breast and milk making tissue. What followed were days filled with stressful weigh-ins, supplement calculations, and a host of anxieties. Lucily in the midst of all the challenges—amid the fears, the grief, and the overwhelming responsibility—there was also incredible beauty. Raylea found hope in her sister in law's donated breast milk and was surrounded by supportive midwives who were trained in breastfeeding support. Together, they embarked on a triumphant journey of long-term supply line breastfeeding. For nine months, Raylea nourished her baby with a combination of donor milk, formula, and pure determination. We'll talk about the real struggles—like the anxiety of traveling with formula milk, coping with the endless tubes and cleaning involved in using an supply line feeding device, and the ongoing challenges of dealing with unhealed perineal damage. We'll also get real about the moments Raylea felt like she needed to quit breastfeeding, and the powerful realization that despite it all, she was breastfeeding her baby.Raylea's story is a testament to the strength and resilience of mothers everywhere. Whether you're struggling with low milk supply, navigating the complexities of using formula, or dealing with the emotional toll of feeling like you're not enough—this episode is for you. You can listen to Andrea's birth stories in episode 312 and today, she shares her incredibly informed story about breastfeeding hypoplasia, also known as Insufficient Glandular Tissue (IGT). As she says, it's a story about what happens when breastfeeding doesn't happen. Her journey highlights the polarity between breastfeeding and formula feeding, the judgement when you choose not to breastfeed (or can't breastfeed) and the lack of lactation and social support for all mothers in postpartum and how this informs and influences feeding choices. Her experience also reflects the data: there is a strong link between inability to breastfeed and perinatal anxiety and depression. Andrea is also the editor of our postpartum book and has been a vital part of ensuring we talk about infant feeding objectively and with awareness of all experiences. -------- Today's episode is brought to you by Kiwi.co. ‘Are you feeding your baby?' These are the words that confronted ICU nurse, Elyse, at a week postpartum when she was told her newborn son was starving, despite her strict three-hour feeding regime. In her words, a diagnosis of insufficient glandular tissue (IGT) or breast hyperplasia caused her world to fall apart. For weeks, Elyse tried everything to increase her supply but was instead left enviously watching the bond between Patrick and her husband develop while she was crying and pumping alone for over six hours a day. Although she finally stopped pushing herself to her absolute limits, her mental health continued to deteriorate as her son fought sleep and feeds. From grief about her experience to fits of rage when she yelled at the dog or screamed into pillows, Elyse kept dreaming about running away. That is until, finally, a nurse, social worker, and psychiatrist at a residential stay recognised that Elyse needed more support. Her journey turned around quickly because of this, and soon after, she welcomed twins! This is one woman's breath-taking story about letting go: letting go of the pressure to breastfeed, letting go of pumping, letting go of recording every moment in a baby app, letting go of self-blame, letting go of resisting help, and letting go of control. This is Elyse's story. FOLLOW the podcast on Instagram and Facebook @perinatalstoriesaustralia for more maternal mental health stories, education, advocacy, and community. Great customer service is something that we can expect from restaurants and hotels, but rarely do we expect it from hospitals or emergency rooms. Today's guest is on a mission to change that. Stowe Shoemaker has served as an advisor to numerous hospitality service providers over the course of his career including IGT, British Airways, Accor, Hilton, Landry's, and Hyatt. He has published two marketing textbooks and his newest book, Hospitable Healthcare: Just What the Patient Ordered! introduces hospitality principles to the healthcare industry. Hospitality matters in every industry. Consider the last time you needed medical care. Did the customer service enhance your experience, or did it only make a hard situation worse? Healthcare needs to be fixed in more ways than one. Stowe and his coauthor aim to address the changes that need to be made in their new book. Hospitality customer service standards are currently much higher than in the healthcare industry. A survey Stowe conducted indicated that healthcare ranks last in the hospitality experience when compared to restaurants and hotels. What can be learned from the hospitality industry that could be used in healthcare? There are five principles that create an exceptional customer experience and systems that can be implemented to make these principles an effortless part of the customer experience. Prepare, anticipate, engage, evaluate, and reward. When each of these principles is achieved, a patient begins to feel less like an inconvenience to the company and more like a loved family member. And loyal customers will become lifelong, repeat clients who spend more money and create positive word of mouth for the business. Welcome to RIMScast. Your host is Justin Smulison, Business Content Manager at RIMS, the Risk and Insurance Management Society. We'll talk about what's happening with Spencer Educational Foundation and how educators and institutions can create risk management programs and how they can secure a grant via Spencer. The risk management and insurance studies program at UNR was made possible by a RIMS-funded Course Development Grant through Spencer Educational Foundation. UNR had 102 students enrolled in the RMI program's third semester in Spring 2023, up from 62 one year before! They hope RMI becomes a minor in Spring 2024. Beyond that, UNR's mentoring program remains viable, with 23 students and 19 industry professionals participating this past spring. They also have upcoming plans for an Insurance & Risk Management Fair, a Planned Networking Event. David Cisneros is here to talk about the success of the program, the mentoring program that supplements it, his success rate in helping students prepare for risk careers, and a bit about his own resume. Key Takeaways: [:01] About RIMScast. [:28] About today's episode where we will discuss risk management education with Ken Goldstein of the Spencer Educational Foundation and David Cisneros, who leads the Risk Management Studies Program at the University of Nevado, Reno. Registration will open soon as will a call for nominations for the ERM Award of Distinction. Visit the events page on RIMS.org for more information. [2:11] We're going to put the spotlight on education in today's episode. We will be joined by David Cisneros who leads the Risk Management Studies Program at the University of Nevada, Reno. David was able to launch his program, thanks in part, to a RIMS-funded grant. The Spencer Educational Foundation was a key player in that relationship. [2:38] Justin introduces his friend Ken Goldstein, the University Partnerships Director for the Spencer Educational Foundation, to talk about launching a Risk Studies Program, and how you can launch one at your university. [3:43] The Spencer Educational Foundation funds the education of the next generation of risk management professionals with five core grant programs. Ken oversees Merit-based Scholarships for Undergrad, Grad, and Ph.D. students who are interested in risk management and insurance. [4:03] Ken also oversees Risk Manager on Campus and a program that draws students into events like RISKWORLD in Atlanta, and oversees course development for colleges and universities domestically and into Canada. Ken tells about his experience in the industry and teaching. [4:55] Ken explains grants and merit-based scholarships. The student has to have an interest in risk management and insurance. Funding for undergrad and grad typically ranges from $5,000 to $10,000 based on your category. Risk Manager on Campus brings practical application to campus with risk managers and seasoned professionals. [5:21] Spencer Educational Foundation has a grant program that funds corporate risk management internships. General grants support travel to conferences like RISKWORLD and engaging in experiential learning with visits to corporate risk managers or insurance companies, even internationally to places like Lloyds of London. [5:45] They are very excited about their course development grant program. They support RM 101 at colleges and universities throughout the U.S. and into Canada as well as upper-level programming in niche areas such as cyber security, privacy risk management, and insure tech. It comes down to student interest and faculty expertise. [6:31] The RMI landscape is dynamically changing with technology. Figuring out how to protect private and proprietary information is key. Having institutions able to teach that is critical. [6:51] Since 2014, Spencer Educational Foundation has funded over 40 course development grants, spending over $1 million at colleges and universities. A third of that funding has come from RIMS. In addition to finances, a benefit of collaborating with RIMS is in tapping into the local chapters with Risk Manager on Campus. [7:28] A number of the chapter members act as adjuncts or clinicals and appreciate their time in the classroom with students. [7:34] The Funding Their Future Gala is coming up on September 14th, 2023 at the Cipriani in New York City. Justin attended last year and had a blast! It was also RIMS CEO Gary LaBranche's first time there. [8:06] Ken offers details about the Gala. It's their largest fundraising event of the year. It feeds the grant programs, scholarships, and course development. It assists with supporting next-generation risk management and insurance talent. This year they are honoring Lucy Fato, EVP, General Counsel, and Global Head of Communications at AIG. [8:29] Lucy Fato is a supporter of next-generation talent, factoring in issues around diversity, equity, inclusion, and career-pathing. It will be an exciting night. [9:00] There are some wonderful developments at the University of Nevada, Reno. Our next guest, David Cisneros, is a faculty member there. He launched a program of classes that Spencer and RIMS funded. Ken describes it. Course development started in 2022. There are a number of classes. The program scaled quickly to over 100 students. [9:47] Ken suggests the secret to such growth is to bring risk management and insurance talent from both an industry and teaching perspective into the classrooms. David leads the RMI studies program at UNR. He's also the Corporate Grant Development Lead, so he interacts with Spencer Educational Foundation frequently. [10:14] Something that resonates with students is to have practical application in the classroom. David and his colleagues do a great job in supplying that, as well as securing internships and positions. Ken looks forward to hearing from him! [10:33] RIMS plug time! [12:14] David Cisneros is the Director for Risk Management and Insurance Studies at the College of Business at University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). The Risk Management and Insurance Studies Program at UNR was made possible by a RIMS-funded course development grant. [12:29] UNR had 102 students enrolled in the RMI program's third semester in Spring 2023, up from 62, one year before! They hope RMI becomes a minor in Spring 2024. [12:44] David is here to talk about the success of the program, the mentoring program that supplements it, his success rate in helping students prepare for risk careers, and a bit about his own resume. Justin welcomes David Cisneros to RIMScast. [13:05] David shares some background on his risk career at Oracle, IGT, and more and how he is teaching now at UNR what he did in risk and where it's going. It's not as stressful for him. He loves teaching students about the industry and what he did for 25 years, and looking at where the industry is going! [14:44] David has five elective classes. He teaches two; adjunct professors teach three. When he asks students on the first day how many want a career in insurance or risk management, no hands go up! He tells them that by the end of the semester, there will be a handful of students working in the industry. After three semesters, there are 21! [16:05] David's favorite part of the industry had always been negotiating the deal, either the settlement of a claim or the purchase of a policy. His students love to hear war stories from the risk management field. Halfway through the semester, they want more. [17:25] The five courses in the program are geared toward risk management. Three courses are waivers for the ARMTM through The Institutes. You can get your Associate in Risk Management designation. The other courses are Property & Casualty and Life & Health. The program will be a minor in 2024, and hopefully, a major in five to 10 years. [18:41] David was aware of Spencer Educational Foundation during his career. AT UNR, he learned about the grants through an email list, so he applied and that's how he became involved in it and got the grant awarded to UNR. [19:37] The RMI program at UNR started with the curriculum. Once the curriculum was established, David knew he had to make insurance interesting and show students there was a career involved. Students look for three things: money, a work/life balance, and a challenge; not to be bored. Students promote the RMI by word of mouth. [20:53] David gets students interested by bringing in industry professionals to talk about jobs and the career. He brings in four guest speakers in a semester. A mentorship program is helpful and it was not common at UNR. There have been close to 30 students involved in the mentorship program. [21:29] There are job opportunities and mentors in risk management, insurance, and accounting. Most of David's students are finance majors. He tells them the program will find them a job if they talk with their mentor. David has just applied for the Risk Manager on Campus program for the next semesters. He has been working in a similar program. [22:27] David tells the students at the beginning that he's going to be the professor that he always wanted in college that's going to answer questions and help them find a job. [22:56] The three adjunct professors were each previously mentors in the program. When David started, there were just two courses and he was teaching both. He started the mentorship program and three industry professionals agreed to be mentors. David asked them if they wanted to teach and they said yes. It's been great! [23:40] From an enrollment standpoint, the RMI program is the fastest-growing program in the business school. But other programs are already established minors and majors, so it's hard to compare them. The semester starts in August and the cohort is already filled. The word gets out by the students. [24:33] Spencer has been fantastic with direction for the program. They have given insight into what big programs are doing and how. The funding and guidance have been invaluable. Ken Goldstein and his predecessor have been great. When David launched the program, he had the curriculum in mind; going from there came from Spenser. [25:53] All the teaching is done in person. There is no virtual component. David is able to connect with students and he believes that is the secret to the program's success. He talks with them about their goals and dreams. He can't do that over Zoom. [27:16] The program at RMI UNR is based on three pillars: Curriculum — courses students want, that can give them an industry designation, Experiential Learning — bringing in guest speakers to talk about the industry, and Job Creation and Fulfillment — David doesn't make promises but he does what he can to get them a job. [27:55] Once the students trust that David wants to get them a job, they're interested in the program. David's measure of success, according to the Dean of the School of Business, is jobs for students, post-graduation. From that standpoint, they are doing well! [28:40] David's thoughts for students thinking of any risk management course, “When you're thinking about a career, it's not just sales. The industry is so vast and so wide, that there are careers for every type of personality. … Whatever your personality type, whatever your strengths are, there is a job for you in insurance and risk management.” [29:26] Justin thanks David for joining us on RIMScast! David appreciates it. B David Cisneros, professor and author, shares that the Hoffman Process, without question, was the single most impactful thing I've ever done for myself." The Process put David on a "path to happiness, to joy, to finding joy." When speaking of his childhood, David shares with Sharon that blame was a deep familial pattern. In his family, "any problem you had was someone else's fault." But in the Process, David quickly came to see that blame was no longer an option if he truly wanted to meet the challenges he was facing. He credits the Process with opening him to the power of taking responsibility for his own life, one of the cornerstones of the foundational work of the Hoffman Process. After the Process, David followed his heart and found his new career teaching at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). It was his work at the Process that gave him the confidence to apply for this job even though he was sure didn't have what they were looking for. He followed the guidance he got and was hired. David did in fact have what they were looking for. David also speaks of the beautiful angels in our lives. He shares a story about his roommate at the Process who helped him through a difficult moment during the week. David expands on this, sharing how others are angels for us and we can be angels for others as we navigate life. He highlights this wisdom in his book about reincarnation, "Between Here and There." This beautiful book was the result of a spirit-led dream he had years after completing the Process. More about B David Cisneros: David grew up in a small farming town along the Central Coast of California. Then and there, he learned about hard work by watching family members rise before the sun to break their backs in the fields. Spiritual but not religious, David somehow found his faith by surfing up and down California's coastlines, searching for the perfect wave. David received a degree in economics from San Diego State University. After college, he worked in the tech and gaming industries at companies like Oracle and IGT. All the while, David struggled to connect the corporate world with his spirituality. Today, he considers himself a Silicon Valley refugee. He lives in the high desert of Northern Nevada, teaches at the University of Nevada, Reno, writes as much as possible, and spends his free time cycling on the road and mountain trails, playing with his Vizsla, listening to his vinyl collection, sipping fine tequila, and laughing with friends and family. And David is still searching for that perfect wave. More about David's book: David's recently published book, “Between Here and There,” is a tale of a hero's journey of spiritual growth ... about a boy searching for the meaning of life. He learns about Love, forgiveness, and trust. But he also discovers what happens to us in the afterlife. David shares that the story came to him in a dream. However, he could never have written it without the emotional and spiritual growth he developed from the Process. And he still remembers the Love and the support he received all those years ago. In this show, we cover Aglianico - the best red grape you may have never heard of. Widely considered one of Italy's top three red grapes with Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, many consider the wines of Aglianico some of the world's top bottles too. That said, because Aglianico is a grape of the more obscure regions in southern Italy (Campania and Basilicata, mainly), the wine hasn't gotten its due. It is much less expensive than top Barolos and Barbarescos or Chiantis and Brunellos – although it is slowly catching up. It is a grape well-suited to warm Mediterranean climates, and for the changing climates of once cooler growing areas like regions of California and Australia. Aglianico is historic, yet modern and there has never been a better time to get acquainted with the wines of this beautiful grape. Photo: Aglianico Source: Taub Family Selections, Mastroberardino Page Here are the show notes: We cover the history of the grape and discuss possible origins. Aglianico is considered to be one of Italy's oldest grapes and it was always thought to be an import from the Greeks who colonized Campania and other parts of southern Italy. Today, Attilio Scienza, the foremost Italian grape scientist, has changed that theory. He believes the grape is native to southern Italy and the name is related to the Spanish word for plains “llano” (ll=gli, both sounds like y sound in canyon). The grape may have been domesticated from grapes growing on the plains We discuss how the grape was nearly extinct after phylloxera, and how Antonio Mastroberardino - preserved and propagated Aglianico to make one of the best red wines in Italian history – the 1968 Mastroberardino Taurasi Riserva. The D'Angelo family revived Aglianico around Monte Vulture in Basilicata around the same time. The success of these two families on the world stage, encouraged others to start making wines from Aglianico, and today there are many great examples of wines from the grape Photo: 1968 Mastroberardino Taurasi Riserva, widely considered one of Italy's best wines Aglianico Viticulture: Aglianico produces medium to small, compact bunches. The individual berries are small, round, and dark blue-black with quite thick skins. The grape requires a long, warm growing season with a warm fall to fully develop flavors and calm tannins and acidity. It is early budding and late ripening. Overly cool or overly hot conditions don't do good things for the grape. Aglianico is one of the latest harvests in Italy, with Vulture often starting harvest in mid to late November According to Ian d'Agata, the top English-speaking writer on Italian wine, Aglianico has three biotypes (variations of the same grape, but not different enough to be clones): Taurasi, with small berries, less vigorous, and sensitivity to spring weather that may reduce the harvest Taburno (also called Aglianico Amaro -- but not because it's amaro /bitter, rather because it's higher in acidity) is less fertile with big bunches. It is earlier ripening, with higher alcohol and higher acidity del Vulture is most intensely flavored biotype, with strong fruit aromas and flavors, and it seems to have fewer viticultural issues The grape also has clones, the most popular of which are used to create bolder, darker wines Terroir Aglianico prefers volcanic soils. The Campania DOCGs are on extinct volcanoes or have influence from nearby Vesuvius. The volcanic activity makes these soils rich in nutrients, well-drained, and very complex. The grape loves elevation and it thrives in spots where other grapes can't ripen. Although Aglianico needs dry climates with abundant sun, it must have diurnal temperature swings at night so it can retain its acidity and build flavor slowly Photo: Mastroberardino's Aglianico vineyards Source: Taub Family Selections, Mastroberardino Page Styles: Generally, Aglianico has the following characteristics: Very high acidity and tannin. Floral (red roses), red fruit (sour cherries), plum (esp. from Vulture), leather and herbs (esp. from Taburno), smoke, and mineral notes. The wines are always savory. It is capable of long aging. Regardless of where the grape grows, these characteristics seem to be present. Some styles are lighter and more floral with higher acidity, while others are deep, earthy, fuller, and complex with tobacco, licorice, iron ore, and coffee notes. Aglianico needs age. It can be tough in its youth, with harsh tannin and acidity, since the grape has naturally high tartaric acid Other styles: IGT wines – blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot or other native grapes Passito: Similar to Amarone from Veneto, these wines are made from partially dehydrated grapes. This style is very rare Sparkling: Made in the IGP classification. These wines often display red cherry, strawberries, and spice flavors and aromas Regions The grape is almost exclusively in southern Italy, mostly in Campania in the provinces of Avellino, Benevento, Sannio, and Caserta. In Basilicata, wines are mainly made around Potenza and Matera. All these areas are in cool, dry, sunny spots in the mountains The three main areas for high quality Aglianico in Italy are: Taurasi (1993 DOCG), which is near Avellino, is mountainous and therefore at altitude, has volcanic soils and has an ideal climate -- hot, sunny days, and cool nights to slow ripening and build flavor. Up to 15% other red grapes are permitted in the blend to soften Aglianico (often Piedirosso, the native aromatic grape, which is lighter than Aglianico, is used) Flavor profile: Black cherry, raspberry, cigar, coffee, earth, leather. High acidity, high tannin, high alcohol, medium bodied. Riserva: has higher alcohol levels is aged longer Producers: Mastroberardino, Feudi di San Gregorio, Ponte, Terre degli Svevi, Re Manfredi, Quintodecimo, Donnachiara, Antionio Caggiano, Salvatore Molettieri, Perillo, Luigi Tecce, Terrdora, Urciolo The wine we were drinking during the show, 2013 Feudi di San Gregorio Taurasi. Here is a link to the show I did with owner Antonio Capaldo, ep 337 Aglianico del Taburno (2011 DOCG) is near Benevento. These wines are less famed than Taurasi because the region was used for bulk wine until the 1980s. The region consists of 14 towns on the eastern side of the Taburno mountain. Rather than pure volcanic or a volcanic mix, soils are clay -limestone. Taburno has bigger diurnals than Taurasi, and is generally cooler than Taurasi leading to higher acidity. Flavor profile: Pepper, black fruit, figs, leather, and herbs. High acidity, high tannin, high alcohol, medium body Producers: Cantina del Taburno, Cantine Tora, La Rivolta Other Campania DOCS include: Cilento, Sannio, Gallucio, Irpinia, Falerno del Massico Aglianico Del Vulture (we did a whole podcast on this) is located in Basilicata, just around the province of Potenza in the north. The wine region borders Campania and Puglia. The wine is required to be 100% Aglianico. Aglianico del Vulture DOC and Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCGs are on volcanic, mineral rich, well-drained soils around the extinct volcano. The elevation of Monte Vulture and the rain shadow it creates make perfect conditions for Aglianico – it gets its long, cool growing season, where it can develop flavors and aromas over time Flavor profile: black plum, coffee, dried herbs, smoke, dark chocolate. These wines have lower acidity than the wines of Campania. They still have high tannin, and high alcohol Producers: Cantine del Notaio, Elena Fucci, Pasternoster, Macarico, Basilisco, Cantina di Venosa, Bisceglia, D'Angelo Aglianico can also be found in: Abruzzo & Molise, where it is blended with Montepulciano Lazio, Calabria, Puglia, where it is sometimes blended with Primitivo New World Regions Australia: Adelaide Hills, Barossa, Langhorne Creek, Mudgee, McLaren Vale, Riverina, Northern Tasmania– cool and warmer regions! The wines are apparently less acidic and tannic, and quite high quality USA: California: Many regions grow the grape but Caparone in Paso Robles was the first in 1992. It shows promise as the climate warms. Other US: Texas, New Mexico Argentina and Mexico are also having some success We end with a discussion of food pairings and encouragement to go out and try this gem!
