Send us a textToday, I'm joined by Bria—a mother of two, living in Grenada in the West Indies—who has embraced breastfeeding as more than just feeding. From her first-ever public feed on the London Underground to nursing a four-year-old despite outside opinions, Bria has navigated her journey with strength and conviction. She shares how witnessing women breastfeed before becoming a mother shaped her own openness, the pain and power of feeding through a medicalised birth, and the raw beauty of her second experience—free-birthing in an AirBnB just an hour before checkout, and feeling the deep, invisible connection between her newborn and her body.Breastfeeding, for Bria, is a message to the world: I am these children's mother—do not question me.Get 10% off Katie's courses - use code POD10 at checkout Pregnant or in the first few weeks after birth: The Feeding Couch For health professionals and birth workers: Breastfeeding & Lactation: the fundamentals online course Please support the show! Mel - Many off putting messages, yet breastfeeding and bed sharing for 18 months as she trusted herself deeply

Send us a textI'm joined today by Mel, who takes us through how she navigated early struggles when her milk took almost a week to come in, and the overwhelming pressure from professionals to supplement with formula. A lactation consultant even told her she might never be able to breastfeed at all as her boobs were too small– so how did these seeds of doubt impact Mel's feeding experience? With family doubting her supply, she stood firm, trusting her body and her baby. Bed-sharing from day one became a lifeline, despite the judgment, as she woke every two hours—sometimes even every 30 minutes—to keep feeding on demand. As her baby grew, she kept going, following her instincts despite feeling the pressure to night wean by 12 months, and her own mum telling her that breast milk wasn't beneficial past a year. Mel is still breastfeeding on demand at 18 months, and aiming for two years. We'll also be talking about the societal rush to push babies toward independence far too soon. Why are we so quick to be separate from them, to make them sleep alone, to expect them to self-soothe before they're ready? As Mel says, this isn't spoiling them—it's setting them up to be secure, functioning human beings. And importantly, we discuss how framing motherhood as a season—with its ups and downs, challenges, and joys—can help explain to others that even though we may be tired and stretched thin at times, it's not something we want to change. It's simply part of the journey, one that twists and turns, but one that we can embrace and even enjoy along the way.All this and lots more invaluable insights. Get 10% off Katie's courses - use code POD10 at checkout Pregnant or in the first few weeks after birth: The Feeding Couch For health professionals and birth workers: Breastfeeding & Lactation: the fundamentals online course Please support the show! Send us a textIn today's episode, I have a special guest—someone you probably already know and love. Sophie Walker, the incredible founder and host of Australian Birth Stories, joins me to share her personal breastfeeding journey. With a Master's in Public Health, Sophie is passionate about helping pregnant women and their support teams actively prepare for birth and postpartum. Her podcast was born from her own experiences—after a first birth filled with intervention and trauma, she went on to have a redemptive, empowering second and third birth. Now, she's on a mission to share real, raw, and honest birth and postpartum stories. In this episode, Sophie opens up about her three boys and three completely different breastfeeding journeys—from the initial feeling of “it's all on me” to learning how to trust herself as a mother. We talk about the realities of being left in the hospital to figure it out alone, navigating outdated advice from well-meaning grandparents, and the exhaustion of those first six weeks. We cover cluster feeding, sleep deprivation, and yes… co-sleeping (and pretending we weren't doing it!).But we also cover the turning points—the power of skin-to-skin, finding support through the Australian Breastfeeding Association, unwavering love and support from grandparents and knowing when and how to wean on your own terms. If you're in the thick of it right now, feeling overwhelmed or wondering if you're doing it “right,” Sophie has some beautiful words of wisdom for you. So, grab a cup of tea, get comfy, and let's dive in.Find Sophie and the Australian Birth Stories podcast hereInstagram @australianbirthstoriesGet 10% off Katie's courses - use code POD10 at checkout Pregnant or in the first few weeks after birth: The Feeding Couch For health professionals and birth workers: Breastfeeding & Lactation: the fundamentals online course Please support the show! Send us a Text Message. In this episode I am joined by Sarah; a mum of soon-to-be three little ones (at the time of recording). She serves as the Head of Research and Education at a leading UK breast cancer charity. And in this episode we're focusing on Sarah's personal journey, navigating the complexities of motherhood and breastfeeding as an autistic woman. We'll be exploring some deeply personal and impactful experiences, such as how current breastfeeding guidance can interact with compulsive behaviours and routine fixation, and how Sarah managed the challenges of dealing with infant reflux. We'll also discuss those moments when, despite all the advice, she decided to throw the rule book out the window and embrace bed-sharing with her little ones.Sarah will share her experiences with breastfeeding during pregnancy, the physical effects it can have on the body, and the conversations she's had with healthcare professionals. We'll also touch on the pressure to make feeding and weaning decisions during pregnancy and the often-misunderstood practice of tandem breastfeeding. We'll explore the logistics of feeding babies of different ages, the social taboos that come with it, and the discomfort around the idea that it takes a 'super mum' to handle this.Throughout it all, Sarah offers a deeply insightful look at the neurodivergent experience of breastfeeding— highlighting the unique ways in which autism for her, shaped her mothering journey. So, whether you're a pregnant, new mum, an advocate, or just curious about the intersection of neurodiversity and motherhood, this episode is for you. Get 10% off Katie's courses - use code POD10 at checkout Pregnant or in the first few weeks after birth: The Feeding Couch For health professionals and birth workers: Breastfeeding & Lactation: the fundamentals online course Please support the show! In years gone by, the message has been loud and clear: bedsharing kills babies. But what does the science say? And why are big organisations like Unicef and the UK's Lullaby Trust now promoting safe bedsharing? Can you ever be safe when you sleep with your baby? And if you're part of the 75% of parents who do fall asleep with their babies at some point, exactly how do you reduce the risks? I invited Carly Grubb, creator of The Beyond Sleep Training Project, to break down the research behind bedsharing and why these days many midwives and doctors avoid blanket 'co-sleeping is dangerous' advice and instead teach people the guidelines around safely sharing a sleep surface. Whether or not you think you'll bedshare, the message is clear: know how to do it safely, so you're not caught unawares.

In this week's episode of the Balancing Chaos podcast, Kelley welcomes Taylor Kulik, an advocate for families who choose not to sleep train their infants. Taylor is an occupational therapist turned holistic sleep consultant with a passion for non-toxic living, homeschooling, and snuggling babies all night. Years ago, Taylor was struggling with trusting what she knew was best for her children, and was consumed by fear-based parenting. This experience led to her passion for sharing her experiences and education with other parents who are going through the same journey to help lead them from fear to freedom.Today, Kelley and Taylor discuss the concept of self-soothing and how babies are not capable of self-regulation. Instead, babies are meant to co-regulate and borrow calm from a calm caregiver. They discuss how certain types of sleep training can raise cortisol levels in infants, insights on infant sleep and how to bed share safely, how co-sleeping benefits mental health for both parents and children, how to transition children into their own beds, and the most common reasons beyond children that adults aren't sleeping well or deal with insomnia. Joining me this week on the podcast is Youtuber, author and mother of two Melanie Murphy. Melanie's approach to parenthood really resonates with me, and we talk a lot about both feeling very strongly that whatever way you want to parent is your choice, and no one else's. She discusses her choice to bedshare with her babies, her choice to talk about breastfeeding online – which brought a whole new level of criticism to her door – how her past experience with eating disorders has shaped the way she views feeding her children, and her decision not to share her children's names. When you speak to Melanie, she's so engaging that you can immediately understand why she's got such an adoring following online – I hope you leave this episode feeling like you're not alone in ANY of your parenting struggles. There are so many new decisions we have to make as parents, and a lot of them are not easy ones to make. Most of them don't even have a very clear "right" or "wrong" direction. Sleeping is no exception. What happens if I didn't plan on bed sharing and then when I get my baby home, I decide I want to? Is there a way to do it safely or is it inherently dangerous? In this episode we talk to Prof Helen Ball. Helen is Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Durham Infancy & Sleep Centre. Helen studies infant sleep and the parent-infant sleep relationship from a biosocial perspective. Broadly defined, her research examines sleep ecology, of infants, young children and their parents. This encompasses attitudes and practices regarding infant sleep, behavioural and physiological monitoring of infants and their parents during sleep, infant sleep development, and the discordance between cultural sleep preferences and biological sleep needs.Helen has conducted research in hospitals and the community, and contributes to national and international policy and practice guidelines on infant care. She pioneers the translation of academic research on infant sleep into evidence for use by parents and healthcare staff via Basis-- the Baby Sleep Information Source website. She serves as Associate Editor of the journal Sleep Health, and is on the Ediotial Board of the Journal of Human Lactation. She is Chair of the Lullaby Trust Scientific Committe, and an elected Board Member of the International Society for the Study and Prevention of Infant Deaths (ISPID).In 2013 Helen received an award for Outstanding Impact in Society from the Economic and Social Research Council, and in 2018 Durham University was awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize for her research and outreach on parent-infant sleep. In this episode we discuss:·       Where on earth did the myths come from which tell us we will do harm to our baby if we pick them up too much - Rachel tells what horrendous thing she was told with her first baby·       Helen takes us on an anthropological look at motherhood and infancy ·       We find out were the ‘well-baby' nurseries in hospitals came from ·       We discuss the old, current and quite frankly shocking SIDS safety messaging around the globe – Using a meat cleaver in bed with a baby to shock you out of bed sharing! Yes, you need to hear about this!·       And find out how Helen played an incredibly crucial role ensuring that the UK, and now many other countries, actually discuss safe bed sharing with parents instead of a blanket rule against it, in doing so saving many a breastfeeding relationship and many parents sanity! LINKS:Basis-- the Baby Sleep Information Source  www.basisonline.org.ukInfancy & Sleep Centre: www.dur.ac.uk/discProf Helen Ball  https://www.durham.ac.uk/staff/h-l-ball/ Research Gate https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Helen-Ball Support the show Produced and edited by Katie James - Support the show via our Patreon page or at BuyMeACoffee Music Joseph McDade Like this podcast? Infant sleep is one of the most polarizing topics in the baby community, and in true MOTR fashion, we do not hold back.We break down all the sleep myths including how you can't “train” your baby to sleep and bed-sharing leads to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (it is actually protective against it!). Yes we're biased, however don't just take it from us; we cite our sources who are the actual experts in this field including James McKenna Ph.D. of “Safe Infant Sleep” and Dr. Sarah Buckley of “Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering.”We explore the perceived “risks” the predatory infant sleep industry wants you to believe and share the myriad benefits (for mom and baby) of bed-sharing, and if that's not your cup of tea, co-sleeping. For sleep deprived moms, we discuss our favorite creative ways to catch up on sleep that do not involve sleep training your baby, watching the clock or letting your baby "cry it out". Oh, and we answer a couple of interesting questions our listeners submitted- we've got your backs! We recognize infant sleep is not a one-size-fits-all approach for every family, however it's also not as black and white as putting your baby in a crib “drowsy but awake”. You can view our resources here.If you have a question or would like to work with us 1:1, please book with us here. For discounts across our favorite products and services, check out our affiliate links/codes.If you're feeling philanthropic, please consider making a financial donation— even $5 goes a long way in helping us reach a wider audience to help other moms and soon-to-be moms think more critically and have the courage to mother against the mainstream. Host Lina Forrestal sits down with Licensed Therapist Dr. Laura Schwinn to have an honest conversation about bed-sharing. Lina and Laura both share their experiences with bed sharing: why they chose to bed share and why they continue to bed share. They talk about the pressures of society to conform to one way of child sleep, touch upon relationship taboos, and talk about ways to re-establish intimacy. The AAP strongly discourages bed-sharing with infants younger than 1 and if you're new to the subject, please educate yourself with all of the facts, guidelines, and statistics.  Read more about safe sleep for infants here.Dr. Laura, a clinical psychologist, has a niche in supporting women, whom feel they have lost their sense of self within the transition of becoming a mother (preconception and well into the motherhood journey).  Clients that resonate with Dr. Laura's approach are high achieving, open-minded, curious explorers, with a propensity towards holistic health and attachment style parenting. We had the pleasure of chatting with Taylor Kulik, occupational therapist, and sleep & well-being specialist. Taylor shares her sleep training journey and how it ultimately unfolded, as well as how the societal expectations of infant sleep contribute to the harm of the family unit, breastfeeding, and attachment. In this episode, we dive into safe bedsharing, misconceptions about whether it is in fact safe, and the problems that arise when providers withhold safe bedsharing information. We are so thankful that Taylor took the time out of her busy schedule as a wife, mom, advocate, and coach, to chat with us about such important topics. While we understand some families feel that sleep training is their only option, or that it is developmentally advantageous, we acknowledge that sleep training is fundamentally incompatible with fostering a secure attachment relationship, which requires coregulation, responsiveness, and proximity. We hope you find this episode informative, encouraging, challenging, and affirming. Thanks again, Taylor! Katelyn Scott is a Canadian, military wife and military member herself. Raising two children together with her husband, a 2 year old and an 8 month old. Motherhood took her completely by surprise and consumed her. She struggled with postpartum depression after the birth of her first baby, and postpartum rage after the birth of her second. She experienced two different, yet very similar births. She has both breastfed and formula fed her babies, bed-shared, co-slept, and tried all the sleep training. At this point, she feels that her personal knowledge and experience as a mom can truly help others.  That being said, everyday is a challenge and there are always new surprises!  After having her own children, she realized that social media gave her false expectations about what being a parent is really like. This lead her to create her own instagram page to share her own story and the real life stories and experiences of other parents. Her goal is to share stories and real life experiences with parents-to-be and current parents  so they  have realistic expectations and don't feel alone.

*Trigger warning: SIDS and infant mortality* In years gone by, the message has been loud and clear: bedsharing kills babies.

Show Notes: Possums Sleep Intervention Part 4 Dr Koa Whittingham (A collaborator on the Possums Sleep Intervention - www.possumsonline.com) shares her thoughts on the use of dummies, and dealing with separation anxiety and sleep for young toddlers. Summary Dummy use The Possums Approach is that use of the Dummy is a personal decision. It is best to wait until breast feeding is established. Dr Whittingham's opinion is that Dummies are a labor saving device, like baby bouncers. By all means use labor saving devices, just be aware that you are doing it. Use them if they allow you to regain sanity and be more responsive throughout the day. Don't use labor-saving devices as a replacement for your attention and time with baby. Sucking for comfort is a very natural tendency. Consider what your boundaries are - sleep time only? Up to 6 months? 12 months? 18 months? 24 months? Separation Anxiety and Sleep for young toddlers It is natural for children to want to be with parents at night. It's about balancing the child's desire to be with parents and parents' needs and preferences. This is very young to require solo sleeping. Consider the parent's values, needs, and desires. What is it about bed-sharing that is a problem? Experiment with a range of options. Bedsharing, room sharing, night-time visits. It is not forever. At the end of the day - do what works. Once they are adults, no one will be able to tell whether they coslept for 1 year or 7 years.
