There are a lot of contentious characters across Star Trek, our opinions of them shaped by who we were or how we felt when we first saw the show. Keiko O'Brien is definitely among them despite being played so brilliantly by actress Rosalind Chao, with some fans having a negative opinion of the character throughout her appearances in The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. Well here it is, for our sins against Keiko the Dabo Wheel of Shame has served us up the worst rated episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation (3.3/10 on IMDb) to review. "Shades of Gray" is infamous for being a glorified clip show done because the production had run out of budget toward the end of the season. It's also our final episode with Dr Pulaski who Science Officer Synoiz actually prefers to Dr Crusher. But is this truly one of the worst episodes of Star Trek or is it just misunderstood? Another episode from our Dabo Wheel of Honour, this time picked by Science Officer Synoiz. This is one of the finest episodes of Enterprise where we get to see Trek at its finest. Season 2 episode 14: "Stigma" where vulcan first officer T'Pol has to deal with her ongoing medical condition and the stigma associated with it from wider vulcan society. This episode is a very poignant way for Trek to address the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s and we go into it in depth along with the cultural differences we recognise among the various characters. We talk a lot about the reality of the HIV and AIDS crisis and how the stigma attached to it affected LGBT+ rights and how well Enterprise manages to tackle the subject. It's also a great Dr Phlox and Trip episode as we get to meet one of Phlox's many wives and he has to deal with her unwanted advances. We're gonna be honest, this attempt at an "epic conclusion" to season 3 just doesn't really land and we struggled with it. A lot happens, there's a lot of flashy special effects, and the return of the evil "not a pah-wraith but probably should have been" from earlier in the season that I don't think we really cared about. The most important part of the episode is the loss of Captain Batel and an incredible imagined future together between her and Pike which feels like a perfect ending for the relationship and foreshadowing of Pike's inescapable fate. Finally! We've waited so long but we at last get our first proper Erica Ortegas (she flies the ship) episode of Strange New Worlds. Despite being one of the incredible ensemble cast of three seasons we've never gotten a plot centred around her before now, but in "Terrarium" we see her stranded on a dead planet and having to make friends with an unlikely ally (spoilers it's a gorn). A controversial episode here in season 3 of Strange New Worlds. A comedy episode that some fans felt didn't quite hit the mark where members of the crew are transformed into vulcans and find that they don't want to be changed back (where's Janeway when we need her?). Spoilers but we absolutely loved this episode and found the comedy to be nicely refreshing after so many edgy episodes this season. Plus we get the bizarre introduction of Patton Oswald as the vulcan "Doug" and the return of our love-to-hate 90% eyebrows Vulcan, Vice Admiral "The Hood" Pasalk. It's an awkward one here as we find out (from the perspective of an incredibly biased source) "What Is Starfleet?" in what can be seen as a very cringe critique of guerilla journalism. This episode has a lot of potential but the premise is one we've had too many times before and while the series has been setting it up with the inclusion of Ortegas' brother, it both feels too soon and not foreshadowed enough. We've got very mixed feelings about this episode of Strange New Worlds. It's very dark and fairly grisly with seemingly big reprecussions for elsewhere in the lore. Plus a character who'd they'd been building up gets red-shirted in a way.
