The Nerdy Up North team Boldy go where no Northern Nerd have gone before...
Michael Goodwill & Graeme Donaldson

A controversial one here from our Dabo Wheel of Shame. Will "Profit and Lace" from Deep Space Nine be seen as a progressive episode today or has it aged terribly? In this we see Quark's misogyny turned on its head when he's forced to become a she and fight for the rights of all Ferengi women. We get a lot of great performances in this, a threat against both women and the Ferengi alliance, and the introduction of the now iconic Sluggo Cola. Both Captain Goodwill and Science Officer Synoiz start with divided opinions about this episode, but will they change over the course of our review? Well thanks to Science Officer Synoiz failing last week's challenge we're reviewing one of our worst episodes of Star Trek from the Dabo Wheel of Shameâ„¢ this week. "The Fight" is from season 5 of Voyager and is one of the most confusingly structured episodes of the entire show. We've got all the usual tropes: Chakotay's awkwardly written Native American catchphrases, plot device aliens that are never explained, Borg "oh yeah about that-" known phenomena, and Neelix once again having no reason to be there. So join Captain Goodwill and Science Officer Synoiz as we review Star Trek Voyager "The Fight". Also apologies to Rosalind Chao for... well everything really. Another episode from our Dabo Wheel of Honour, this time picked by Science Officer Synoiz. This is one of the finest episodes of Enterprise where we get to see Trek at its finest. Season 2 episode 14: "Stigma" where vulcan first officer T'Pol has to deal with her ongoing medical condition and the stigma associated with it from wider vulcan society. This episode is a very poignant way for Trek to address the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s and we go into it in depth along with the cultural differences we recognise among the various characters. We talk a lot about the reality of the HIV and AIDS crisis and how the stigma attached to it affected LGBT+ rights and how well Enterprise manages to tackle the subject. It's also a great Dr Phlox and Trip episode as we get to meet one of Phlox's many wives and he has to deal with her unwanted advances. Captain Goodwill and Science Officer Synoiz finally get the chance to review an extremely pivotal two-parter in Star Trek history from The Dabo Wheel of Honour. The Best of Both Worlds was where Star Trek changed forever and the repercussions of these amazing episodes are still felt to this day. Whether it's through the plot of Star Trek Picard or the spin off movies from TNG, the events of Voyager, or Sisko's backstory in Deep Space Nine. What happens here and our introduction to Locutus of Borg and the events of Wolf 359 have far reaching consequences And more importantly, was Keiko O'Brien involved? It also contains what is widely considered one of the greatest cliff-hangers in television history. So pour a Martini and join them won't you? It's clunky, it's badly paced, part two kinda forgets about most of the setup from part one, but is "Time's Arrow" Star Trek The Next Generation's worst two parter? Join Captain Goodwill and Science Officer Synoiz as they have a Lower Decks inspired "Twain Off" (in full costume if you watch on the YouTube) as they discuss this infamous episode of the show from The Dabo Wheel of Shame in which the crew of the Enterprise get head off Data (so to speak). This was a lot of fun to do, but do our opinions of the episodes change with this review? Listen and find out! One of Science Officer Synoiz's favourite episodes of Star Trek ever here, finally reviewed on the show. "The Drumhead" from Star Trek The Next Generation goes deep into themes that are still very relevant to the modern day. What happens when distrust is so firmly set into a culture that conspiracies are seen everywhere and justice becomes more about proving yourself right than being impartial? In this episode we discuss all aspects of yet another incredible court room episode of Star Trek, one that teaches us about our own world and situation through the lens of science fiction. One of Captain Goodwill's picks for The Dabo Wheel of Shame here. While Prodigy is an excellent show in our opinion, is "Kobayashi" one of its weakest episodes? Dal is getting to grips with his self-appointed rank of captain and calls on training from holograms of famous Trek characters to help. This episode is notable There's disagreement between our two hosts here but can the Captain be talked round? Is it okay or disrespectful to use sound clips of Leonard Nimoy, René Auberjonois, Nichelle Nichols, and James Doohan after their deaths? Let's get into the discussion on this episode of Trekkin Up North.Subscribe to our YouTube channel for new episodes every Friday: https://www.trekkinupnorth.com Join us on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/trekkinupnorth Hosted on Acast. What could be better than reviewing an episode of The Original Series on Trekkin Up North? How about one about PTSD! One of the most iconic episodes of Star Trek ever is covered this week as The Dabo Wheel of Honour gives us "The Doomsday Machine" from season two of TOS. We meet Commodore Matt Deck and the infamous ship swallowing, planet destroying machine itself. What did we think of this episode nearly 60 years after it first aired? Listen now to find out. Seen by many as the point where Star Trek Voyager finds its footing and cements itself as a fan favourite, in "The Gift" we welcome former Borg drone Seven of Nine into the regular cast and say farewell to one of the show's worst used characters Kes. In this episode of Trekkin Up North we go over what makes this episode so noteworthy and discuss a lot about the character of Kes, why she was such a missed opportunity, and give out some controversial takes on Captain Janeway's competency. A controversial choice for the Dabo Wheel of Shame from Science Officer Synoiz here despite Deep Space Nine being his favourite series of Star Trek. Was the premier two-parter episode "Emissary" a shaky start to the show? What are our thoughts on this, and following the discussion does it really deserve to be in the Dabo Wheel of Shame? Join Captain Goodwill and Synoiz on this episode of Trekkin Up North where we ramble on for ages and probably end up talking about Keiko O'Brien more than the actual episode itself. We love a court room episode of Trek here at Trekkin Up North, and this one is no exception. We covered "Ad Astra Per Aspera" back as part of season two of Strange New Worlds and it set our phasers to stunned. From the stellar performances of the guest stars and the joy of an Una episode, to showing how well the show can work even without Pike being front and centre, there was no way this wasn't going into our Dabo Wheel of Honour. Now that it's come up again we're taking a second look at this great episode to see whether our feelings have changed and what we think makes it as good as it is. Also shout out to The Hood from Thunderbirds who guest stars in this episode. We're back after a long absence on the streaming platforms and what better way to herald our return than with our review of one of the most terrible movies either of us has ever seen. Section 31 was the long-heralded new Star Trek movie starring Hollywood heavyweight Michelle Yeoh, based upon her character from Star Trek: Discovery. You really should listen to this review as it was one of the first times that neither of us could actually think of anything positive to say about something with Star Trek stuck on it, and thus leads to much hilarity as we struggle to make sense of how this audio-visual disaster came about. Welcome to season 3 of Trekkin Up North! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
