This week the hosts discuss one of Josh's favorite movies, 1978's The Eyes of Laura Mars. From wiki: “Eyes of Laura Mars is a 1978 American neo-noir supernatural horror[3] thriller film directed by Irvin Kershner and starring Faye Dunaway, Tommy Lee Jones, Brad Dourif, René Auberjonois, and Raul Julia. It follows a New York City fashion photographer (Dunaway) who suddenly develops the clairvoyant ability to witness disturbing serial murders from the point of view of the killer. The screenplay was adapted (in collaboration with David Zelag Goodman) from a spec script titled Eyes, written by John Carpenter; it was Carpenter's first major studio film. H. B. Gilmour later wrote a novelization.”Also discussed: Hawaii, Sasquatch Sunset, Luca Guadagnino's Queer, My Own Private Idaho and the career of Gus Van Sant, American giallo, Jon Peters, Faye Dunaway, Shampoo, Personal Shopper, Blood and Black Lace, The September Issue, capelets and ponchos, Barfly, The Towering Inferno, Puzzle of a Downfall Child, Brian De Palma, NEXT WEEK: Morgiana (1972) Follow them across the internet: Bloodhaus:https://www.bloodhauspod.com/https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/ Drusilla Adeline:https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/https://letterboxd.com/sisterhyde/https://www.instagram.com/sister__hyde/ Joshua Conkelhttps://www.joshuaconkel.com/https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/https://letterboxd.com/JoshuaConkel/https://bsky.app/profile/joshuaconkel.bsky.social
Rarely do we devote one show to just one writer, but on this Selected Shorts, we turn the show over to universally beloved author George Saunders. Saunders somehow finds the good, or at any rate the imperfectly human, in his characters. The result is a catalog as funny as it is moving, as devastating as it is hopeful. On this program, two stories that perfectly illustrate this. “Love Letter” is from Saunders' latest collection Liberation Day. In it, an anxious grandfather who is ambivalent about the state of the world counsels an older grandchild. “Love Letter” is read by Stephen Colbert. And a favorite from our archives, “The Falls,” shows us two flawed men given a chance to do the right thing. René Auberjonois reads. The show also includes a conversation between host Meg Wolitzer and Saunders.
Four people die but everyone still gets in a good laugh at the end. Join your primitive hosts as they discuss purple people, insufficiently-explicated machine-gods, and one of the more curious interpretations of the Prime Directive. All this and so much more on this week's wickedly funny episode of It's Got Star Trek! Spoiler warning! We dive right into a detail-rich discussion of this episode of Star Trek: The Original Series, so if you haven't had a chance to see it yet – beware! Next week: Dan's algorithm has selected the (apparently) perfect episode of Star Trek to discuss next - the René Auberjonois-starring 'Oasis' from Star Trek: Enterprise's first season! Note that this and all episodes of the It's Got Star Trek podcast contain explicit language and, frankly, an unnecessary amount of offensive content, so the show is intended only for adults and really really cool kids. Pull out two strips of Gold-Pressed Latinum and submit them in the little box to listen to our episode on the Farenghi, Star Trek The Next Generation's first attempt at a recurring villain race which went incredibly poorly for everyone concerned. From their first appearance in the show when they act like incredibly hyperactive gerbils in the The Last Outpost to their most recent focus in Star Trek Prodigy where we find out more about Dal's past and the conflict between his old life and his new life in First Con-tact to one of Deep Space Nine's many attempts to bring nuance to the species in Family Business when Quark and Rom have to deal with their mother Ishka's becoming involved in what passes for First Stage Feminism in a culture where women can't wear clothes. What a perfect alien race to talk about the day before the British Election gets the money grabbing Tory's out of power after 14 years! Who says Star Trek isn't political? If they do, make them put three strips of latinum in the appropriate hole! EPISODES INCLUDED: The Last Outpost (13:39), First Con-tact (43:35), Family Business (01:03:43) Talking Points Include: They Live and Ironic 4th July movies (we didn't watch ‘They Live,' but instead we watched ‘Slap Shot'), we briefly touch on the inevitable rousting of the Torys, the unfortunate antisemitic coding of the Farenghi, BE INTIMIDATED BY MILES' ARMS! The Robocop vs. The Terminator crossover by Dark Horse Comics, (CORRECTION: Frank Miller HAD started writing and drawing ‘Sin City' the year before) the Monster of the Week RPG, back to the Season One well of Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Bee-Gees, Lisa-Lisa and Cult Jam, where IS the Enterprise's Engineer? Geordi's weird ‘oooooh-wee!' could the Farenghi ever have been a threat? Doctor Who's own Farneghi the Slitheen and how they killed Charlie's interest in Doctor Who back in 2005, the Farenghi design and how it's immediately undercut, Armin Shimmerman giving some great vibes this early on, how this remakes ‘Errand of Mercy,' Captain Picard does a swear, that one episode of ‘The X-Files' what Stephen King wrote contained a swear, Transformers: The Movie dropping a ‘S-Bomb,' Are we actually watching ‘The Mighty Boosh? We want Matt Berry to be a Star Trek Alien, Adele (sound goblins ate anything we had to say further on Adele, apologies for the weird edit) WHY IS ‘ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS' the US Number One in January? Kid Kapici, Sea Power is a Hometown Band, Dal has a Yondu. Charlie is a freak, Charlie also likes to equate Dal from ‘Prodigy' to Poochie, Prodigy excelling at non-humanoid aliens, cartoons for kids these days don't have as much as a reset button as they used to, Prodigy finally does a Starfleet, Warren Ellis and Brian Michael Bendis style decompression in relation to Picard, eventually Charlie will learn how to pronounce René Auberjonois' surname, Living Joy, Montell Jordan and THIS IS HOW WE DO IT, Charlie's love of KINECT Dance Games, Jake Sisko is disturbingly obsessed with his dad's love life, Quark is the lone conservative in a strangely progressive Farenghi family, THE RETURN OF JEFFREY COMBS, Farenghinar is the future tech-bros want, (CULTURAL NOTE: Rounders is the British equivalent of ‘Baseball,') how old is Jake Sisko? At this point during the episode, the weekly Madison Tornado siren test starts going off, Charlie deals with his own FCA in real life, Farenghi culture and their home world is almost set up to be a Gilliam-esque nightmare, once more a reminder that Miles didn't watch ‘Rejoined' for the Trill episode, this isn't a Farenghi Comedy Episode.
This week the hosts Joshua Conkel and Drusilla Adeline discuss doppelgängers with Robert Altman's Images. From wiki: “Images is a 1972 psychological horror film directed and co-written by Robert Altman and starring Susannah York, René Auberjonois and Marcel Bozzuffi. The picture follows an unstable children's author who finds herself engulfed in apparitions and hallucinations while staying at her remote vacation home.”But also discussed: a real-life horror story, Gawker in the 00s, a mysterious butt stabber, Death of a Cyclist, Woman in the Dunes, Pitfall, Infested, Attack the Block, Arachnophobia, Doppelgänger by Naomi Klein, 3 Women, Persona, Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, Nashville, Gosford Park, Pauline Kael, Faye Dunaway's reality show, One Tree Hill, The Eyes of Laura Mars, and more!NEXT WEEK: Darren Aronofsky's Mother! On this episode, Corbin and Mattbin talk about THE EYES OF LAURA MARS, a movie about violent images and Tommy Lee Jones's nipples. Topics include: images of violence and how we process them as individuals and as a society, Haneke, the difficulty in seeing prolific character actor René Auberjonois as anyone but Odo, and Helmut Newton. Corbin says next week's episode will be about "The Devil, Probably," by Robert Bresson, but he called an audible and we went with Jean-Luc Godard's 'Masculin Feminin' instead. So be aware of that.
Host Meg Wolitzer presents stories by the incomparable Margaret Atwood, drawn from our archives and a live performance evening hosted by the author. “There Was Once” is a brief satire about the art of writing and the importance of free speech. It's performed by René Auberjonois, Zach Grenier, and Jane Kaczmarek. “Widows,” performed by Ellen Burstyn, is a delicate and ironic tale in which a recently widowed woman becomes accustomed to her new role. And Atwood is in full dystopian throttle in “Freeforall” where reproductive rights have become a matter of life and death. The reader is Becky Ann Baker. Both “Widows” and “Freeforall” have been published in Atwood's new collection Old Babes in the Wood: Stories. Portions of Atwood's onstage talk with fellow writer A.M. Homes are also featured.
For this "ReScreen" episode, Michael does a rewatch of the 1982 animated film "The Last Unicorn" featuring the voices of Alan Arkin, Jeff Bridges, Mia Farrow, Tammy Grimes, Robert Klein, Angela Lansbury, Christopher Lee, Keenan Wynn, Paul Frees, and René Auberjonois based on the book by the same name. We get two special guest stars for the price of one as we review "Oasis"! When the NX-01 finds a spoopy ghost ship the most obvious plot happens. Even with the writers using 100% of the René Auberjonois, will that be enough?
April 1994.
Star Trek: Enterprise paved a lot of ground in its first season, creating characters and a history of Starfleet. However, it also dared to bring a regular cast member from another Star Trek series on board as a guest star, playing a character completely unrelated. We all know that the amazing René Auberjonois played Constable Odo for seven seasons on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, but many people forget he also played Ezral in the first season Enterprise episode, "Oasis." For the second anniversary of his passing, we'll consider this episode and what René brings to it specifically. Plus, we have a winner of some FanSets pins! We've got one more brand-new episode in 2021 after this, so we hope you'll join us for this episode of The Flagship.

We went a little off the rails with this one, but a good discussion was had, nonetheless! Our actor's spotlight is bittersweet, as we celebrate the life and work of the late René Auberjonois, who plays Hugo. Huge thank you to our Patrons for covering our hosting fees even during our hiatus; we've also recently revamped our website and are in the process of bringing you lots of bonus content to show our appreciation :)
Welcome back to Intermission, a spin-off podcast from The Film Stage Show. In a time when arthouse theaters are hurting more than ever and there are a plethora of streaming options at your fingertips, we wanted to introduce new conversations that put a specific focus on the films that are foundational or perhaps overlooked in cinephile culture. Led by yours truly, Michael Snydel, Intermission is a 1-on-1 supplementary discussion podcast that focuses on one arthouse, foreign, or experimental film per episode as picked by the guest. For our ninth episode, I talked to Executive Editor of Seventh Row, Orla Smith, about Kelly Reichardt's 2016 film Certain Women, which is currently available to stream on The Criterion Channel. Throughout her career, Reichardt has been one of the great observers of the “ordinary.” Her past otherworldly visions of the Pacific Northwest complement and antagonize characters beset by institutional and individual alienation. Transplanted to Montana, this is even finer clarification of those dynamics as personified through professional sexism, marital strife, and personal misinterpretations. A triptych adaptation of Maile Meloy's Half In Love and Both Ways Is the Only Way I Want It, it's tempting to interpret the film as a meditation on the nature of catharsis––but as with the rest of her films, every spiritual victory comes with a compromise. Intermission episodes are shared exclusively with our Patreon community before being posted to The Film Stage Show's main feed. One can also enter our giveaways, get access to our private Slack channel, and support new episodes by becoming a Patreon contributor. For a limited time, all new Patreon supporters will receive a free Blu-ray/DVD. After becoming a contributor, e-mail podcast@thefilmstage.com for an up-to-date list of available films. Intermission is supported by MUBI, a curated streaming service showcasing exceptional films from around the globe. Every day, MUBI premieres a new film. Whether it's a timeless classic, a cult favorite, or an acclaimed masterpiece — it's guaranteed to be either a movie you've been dying to see or one you've never heard of before and there will always be something new to discover. Try it for free for 30 days at mubi.com/filmstage. Characteristically spare, each story can be condensed to a single phrase: a lawyer (Laura Dern) tolerates a persistent client (Jared Harris); a misunderstood woman (Michelle Williams) tries to buy sandstone from an old man (René Auberjonois); and a rancher (Lily Gladstone) befriends a teacher (Kristen Stewart). But micro moments elaborate and complicate those dynamics. And underneath the surface quietude of the formal choices of Reichardt and regular collaborator, Christopher Blauvelt, the film feels volcanic in showing the women's years of mistreatment and/or dissatisfaction. A co-editor and part of the team that recently released Roads to Nowhere: Kelly Reichardt's broken American dreams, Smith was the ideal guest to explore these questions and contradictions of her career. A comprehensive journey through Reichardt's career and especially her new film, First Cow, Smith has spent a large part of the last year examining the minute themes and talking to first time and repeated collaborators responsible in making her films (including Lily Gladstone as part of their Lockdown Film School). In our conversation, we talked about Reichardt's fixation on connection and disconnection, class dynamics, and her canny ability to draw out great performances from her actors.

Inspired by a couple of true presidential corpse stories: the 1876 plot to steal Abraham Lincoln’s body, and the exhumation of Zachary Taylor in 1991, RAISING BUCHANAN took the idea of presidential corpse stealing to extraordinary lengths of dark comedy delight with terrible dead presidents. Because there’s certainly something to be learned from terrible presidents, as well as laughing at them. Finding their inspiration in the off-kilter tone of the dramatically rooted comedies of Alexander Payne, the Coen Brothers, and Hal Ashby, the RAISING BUCHANAN stars Amanda Melby (Candid Camera), René Auberjonois (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Cathy Shim (Reno 911!), Robert Ben Garant (Reno 911!), Terence Bernie Hines (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty), Jennifer Pfalzgraff (21 Grams), Steve Briscoe (Covet), Lynnette ‘L.A.’ Brown (Kerry and Angie), and M. Emmet Walsh (Blade Runner). Produced by Melby and Joe Gruberman (Eleven Eleven), this award-winning feature film swept the film festival circuit racking up multiple awards, including: Best Feature, Best Dramedy, Best Actress (Melby) and Best Screenplay (Dellis), among others. Creator and lead actor Amanda Melby stops by for a lively conversation on the wryly funny and endearing work as well as working with the late, great René Auberjonois. Okay, let's wrap up our tribute to the pop culture legends we lost in 2019. (We've been drinking so many shots in their memory that we're almost out of coffee. And that frightens us.) Part 2 includes more movie stars (Peter Fonda, Sid Haig, Danny Aiello), sitcom stars (Valerie Harper, Bill Macy, Philip McKeon), rock stars (Eddie Money, Ric Ocasek, Ginger Baker), and, uh, Star Trek stars (DC Fontana, Aron Eisenberg, René Auberjonois). There are even a couple of beloved performers from bizarre 1970s variety TV (which did not get more bizarre than The Brady Bunch Hour and The Star Wars Holiday Special). And from children's TV we have Russi Taylor (the voice of Minnie Mouse), Jack Sheldon (the voice of Conjunction Junction)... and Big Bird himself, Caroll Spinney. So hang on, kids, and we'll get through the whole list together. And hey, if you need cheering up, Squirrel Appreciation Day is this week too. You know what to do.
Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 60th episode of "VideoFuzzy," my twice-monthly progress report on cataloging more than 2,800 VHS transfers and digital recordings. In this installment, titled "Happy New ... What Year Is This Again?" I open with comments on recent celebrity deaths including Marie Fredriksson, Philip McKeon, Caroll Spinney, and under Cross Connections, a retrospective of René Auberjonois, highlighting his appearances on "Benson" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." I feature the appearance of the series premiere of ABC's "Life on Mars" in my collection, and include an expansive reflection of the connections I draw from that show through my formative media consumption, through "Barney Miller," "The Unusuals" and "Detroit 1-8-7" and potentially "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." In my Classic Collection, I talk about the series premiere of "Sanctuary," a Waco-themed episode of "Criminal Minds," a promo that turned up for the Mouse River Players' production of Neil Simon's "Plaza Suite" I did with Kymn Quill in Minot, and series I encountered while plowing through my archives to get into my new binder, including "The West Wing," "Six Feet Under," "Fringe," "Eli Stone" and "My Own Worst Enemy," as well as highlights running up to the 2008 election. In my Current Collection, I talk about the 12th season premiere of "Doctor Who," a whole bunch of music videos from the '80s and several movies including "The Revenant," "Fathom," the "Flatliners" remake, "Next," "Mr. Peabody and Sherman," "Stand By Me," "Gremlins." Then in What I've Been Watching, I share some thoughts on "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" from across four decades of storytelling. Finally, in "By the Numbers," I talk about a couple milestones, first on hitting episode 60 in this podcasting effort, and then the somewhat more significant milestone of breaking into Binder No. 5. At about 1,700 hours on 835 discs in my Classic Collection and some 1,800 hours on 295 discs in my Current Collection, I've cataloged nearly 3,500 hours on more than 1,100 discs in my media collection, which feels like a good amount of progress. Binder No. 3 took about a year, and this past one took about 10 months, so even my pace is improving. All that said, I'm now in Binder No. 5 of thirteen, so ... definitely a ways to go yet. Cheers!

Star Trek’s second golden age. The mid-1990s were a glorious time for Star Trek fans. With The Next Generation transitioning from the small screen to big, Deep Space Nine paving the way for serialized storytelling on television, and Voyager taking us to the other side of the galaxy, fans were spoiled for choice. But such riches don’t always last, and when Enterprise was cancelled in 2005, it seemed that Gene Roddenberry’s vision of the future might well become part of TV’s past. As we enter a new decade, however, almost 20 years after the final big-screen voyage of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his crew, a second golden age of Star Trek is upon us—and it looks to be even richer than the first. In this episode of The Ready Room, hosts C Bryan Jones and Larry Nemecek look ahead to the flood of Star Trek new content headed to our screens in 2020. We discuss Picard, Discovery Season 3, the animated Short Treks, and more. But first, we take time to remember three members of the family who left us in recent months: Aron Eisenberg, Dorothy “D.C.” Fontana, and René Auberjonois. Rövid hírszekció: • Negyvenöt évvel a Star Trek rajzfilmsorozat után a Short Treks új animációs epizódokat hozott, az ’Ephraim and Dot’ és a ’The Girl Who Made the Stars’ című történeteket természetesen mi is megtekintettük. • Odo megtestesítője, René Auberjonois 79 éves korában elhunyt. A színészt a Deep Space Nine mellett az Enterprise-ban és számos egyéb sorozatban is láthattuk. Michael Lamper, Marina Sirtis férje, illetve a ’The Vengeance Factor’ (TNG, 3x09) vendégsztárja szintén elhunyt. • Az epizód írója, Margaret Armen nevéhez az eredeti sorozatban a ‘The Gamesters of Triskelion’, a ‘The Paradise Syndrome’ és a ‘The Cloud Minders’ kötődik. A rajzfilmsorozatban bemutatott történetek megírására D.C. Fontana kérte fel őt.

In memory of Aron Eisenberg and René Auberjonois, I'm watching an episode of Deep Space Nine as a one-off. It's a landmark episode and probably too good to watch on a lark, but it's clearly worth it. I'm watching this episode with my friend Dr. Izixs. He's a fellow Star Trek veteran and was kind enough to help me out with this. I'll say it, even though the character of Spock was a landmark, I sincerely believe that Odo was Star Trek's best outsider character. I don't think he ever completes his arc the way Spock does, but the depth afforded by The Dominion War and his relationship with Kira over seven years gives us a lot more depth with it. The Beige and The Bold is hosted on Anchor and is available on most podcasting platforms. New episodes go live on Sunday nights at 10:00 PM CST. You can find "Watchers of Tomorrow," Dr. Izixs' podcast at: http://www.watchersoftomorrow.com/
Welcome back aboard the starship Texas for the 88th TEX-TREK podcast. There is a lot to talk about in this round, namely the two new Short Treks we just got that mark Trek’s return to animation for the first time in 45 years. Also, we reflect on the recent passing of Trek icons Dorothy Fontana and René Auberjonois. And last but not least we even manage to fit in some Trek movie news with a fourth Kelvin movie possible in development with a new director. As always, available in both video and audio-only formats.Check us out on YouTube at: https://youtu.be/4myNEU1JaNg
We remember René Auberjonois and Aron Eisenberg of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Welcome back for another amazing episode from the triplets of mayhem, the Nerds Amalgamated crew. This week we have an excellent show for you to enjoy with everyone in fine form and having fun. The first topic of the week is from DJ looking into Simon Pegg claiming that cinema appears to be dying. Now does this relate to the comments about thin margins in movies? Well, that is a good question and if you want to know more you will have to listen in to find out. But we are you will laugh when you listen to this section.Next up Professor unveils his darker side and lures us into a dungeon…. What, he doesn’t… oops sorry apparently that was supposed to be Professor tells us about a dungeon game made by an AI. My apologies, but it is a reasonably easy mistake to make, after all he is a bit of a mad scientist. But this is looking really cool and fun, some of the options in this are pretty outstanding. Once again this is not a warning about AI trying to take over the world…yet.Last up we have an AI system that is learning how to work co-operatively with people, and possibly manipulating them. Buck brings us a story about some research from Facebook’s AI team that is pretty darn well ground breaking in regards to the results being achieved. We are talking about an attempt to formulate a near perfect response to an imperfect problem. What does that mean, well listen in and you can find out.As usual we have the games being played, with Buck changing his at the last second which is kind of cool. Then this is followed by the regular variety of shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and special events. We are offering a new service, if you are feeling a little pompous and wish to regain that sense of reality Buck is offering to develop a personal insult just for you. As always please remember to take care of yourselves, look out for each other and stay hydrated.Simon Pegg: "Theatrical Cinema, Sadly, Appears to Be Dying"- https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/simon-pegg-theatrical-cinema-sadly-appears-be-dying-1258252A.I. In 1912 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his "invention of automatic regulators for use in conjunction with gas accumulators for illuminating lighthouses and buoys". He died from terminal cancer at the age of 68 in Lidingö,Stockholm - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustaf_Dal%C3%A9n9 Dec 1970 - Artem (Artyom) Ivanovich Mikoyan, Soviet Armenian aircraft designer, who cofounded the Mikoyan-Gurevich design bureau along with Mikhail Gurevich. In March 1942, the bureau was renamed OKB MiG (Osoboye Konstruktorskoye Büro), ANPK MiG (Aviatsionnyy nauchno-proizvodstvennyy kompleks) and OKO MiG. The MiG-1 proved to be a poor start, the MiG-3 went into production but only occasionally could it fight in its intended high-level interceptor role. Further MiG-5, MiG-7 and MiG-8 Utka did not progress beyond research prototypes. He died from stroke at the age of 65 in Moscow - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artem_Mikoyan9 Dec 2005 - Robert Sheckley, American writer. First published in the science-fiction magazines of the 1950s, his numerous quick-witted stories and novels were famously unpredictable, absurdist, and broadly comical. His works include not only original short stories and novels, but also TV series episodes (Captain Video and His Video Rangers), novelizations of works by others (Babylon 5: A Call to Arms, after the film , stories in shared universes such as Heroes in Hell, and collaborations with other writers. In many stories Sheckley speculates about alternative (and usually sinister) social orders, of which a good example is the story "A Ticket to Tranai" (which tells of a sort of Utopia designed for human nature as it actually is, which turns out to have terrible drawbacks). His novel Dimension of Miracles is often cited as an influence on Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, although in an interview for Neil Gaiman's book Don't Panic: The Official Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Companion, Adams said he had not read it until after writing the Guide. He died from complications following heart surgery and a stroke at the age of 77 in Poughkeepsie, New York - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_SheckleyFamous Birthdays9 Dec 1608 - John Milton, English poet and intellectual, who served as a civil servant for the Commonwealth of England under its Council of State and later under Oliver Cromwell. He wrote at a time of religious flux and political upheaval, and is best known for his epic poem Paradise Lost, written in blank verse. Writing in English, Latin, Greek, and Italian, he achieved international renown within his lifetime, and his celebrated Areopagitica, written in condemnation of pre-publication censorship, is among history's most influential and impassioned defences of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. His desire for freedom extended into his style: he introduced new words (coined from Latin) to the English language, and was the first modern writer to employ non-rhymed verse outside of the theatre or translations. Samuel Johnson praised Paradise Lost as "a poem which...with respect to design may claim the first place, and with respect to performance, the second, among the productions of the human mind", though he described Milton's politics as those of an "acrimonious and surly republican". Poets such as William Blake, William Wordsworth and Thomas Hardy revered him. He was born in Bunhill, London - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Milton9 Dec 1917 - Leo James Rainwater, American physicist who shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1975 for his part in determining the asymmetrical shapes of certain atomic nuclei. During World War II, he worked on the Manhattan Project that developed the first atomic bombs. In 1949, he began developing his theory that, contrary to what was then believed, not all atomic nuclei are spherical. His ideas were later tested and confirmed by Aage Bohr's and Ben Mottelson's experiments. He also contributed to the scientific understanding of X-rays and participated in the United States Atomic Energy Commission and naval research projects. Rainwater joined the physics faculty at Columbia in 1946, where he reached the rank of full professor in 1952 and was named Pupin Professor of Physics in 1982. He received the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award for Physics in 1963 and in 1975 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, "for the discovery of the connection between collective motion and particle motion in atomic nuclei and the development of the theory of the structure of the atomic nucleus based on this connection". He was born in Council, Idaho - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Rainwater9 Dec 1926 - Henry Way Kendall, American particle physicist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1990 jointly with Jerome Isaac Friedman and Richard E. Taylor "for their pioneering investigations concerning deep inelastic scattering of electrons on protons and bound neutrons, which have been of essential importance for the development of the quark model in particle physics." These experiments involved scattering high-energy beams of electrons from protons and deuterons and heavier nuclei. At lower energies, it had already been found that the electrons would only be scattered through low angles, consistent with the idea that the nucleons had no internal structure. However, the SLAC-MIT experiments showed that higher energy electrons could be scattered through much higher angles, with the loss of some energy. These deep inelastic scattering results provided the first experimental evidence that the protons and neutrons were made up of point-like particles, later identified to be the up and downquarks that had previously been proposed on theoretical grounds. The experiments also provided the first evidence for the existence of gluons. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Way_KendallEvents of Interest9 Dec 1851 – The first YMCA in North America is established in Montreal. YMCA is Young Men's Christian Association. From its inception, it grew rapidly and ultimately became a worldwide movement founded on the principles of muscular Christianity. Local YMCAs deliver projects and services focused on youth development through a wide variety of youth activities, including providing athletic facilities, holding classes for a wide variety of skills, promoting Christianity, and humanitarian work. YMCA globally operates on a federation model, with each independent local YMCA voluntarily affiliated with its national organization. The national organizations, in turn, are part of both an Area Alliance (Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the United States, and Canada) and the World Alliance of YMCAs (World YMCA). - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YMCA9 Dec 1909 - Dr. Henry W. Walden, flew the first successful American monoplane flight. He was the designer, builder and pilot of that plane the Walden III. It was made after building a rudimentary wind tunnel and experimenting with different surface designs. At Mineola, Long Island, Walden and his plane left the ground and flew for a few hundred feet. He put the aircraft back down safely—elated. - https://www.airspacemag.com/history-of-flight/or-die-trying-21230348/?page=49 Dec 1967 - Jim Morrison arrested on stage for disturbing the peace at the New Haven Arena, Connecticut, making him the 1st rock star to be taken into custody during a performance. According to Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek, Morrison was "making out" with a female fan in the shower in the backstage area of the New Haven Arena when a local police officer who was providing security for the band – apparently not recognizing the singer – told them to vacate the area, to which Morrison reportedly replied, "Eat it." When the officer brandished a can of Mace and warned, "Last chance," the singer retorted, "Last chance to eat it" – earning himself a face full of Mace for his defiance. Morrison was charged with inciting a riot, indecency and public obscenity. He posted a bond, but the charges were later dropped. - https://ultimateclassicrock.com/jim-morrison-maced-and-arrested-in-new-haven/IntroArtist – Goblins from MarsSong Title – Super Mario - Overworld Theme (GFM Trap Remix)Song Link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GNMe6kF0j0&index=4&list=PLHmTsVREU3Ar1AJWkimkl6Pux3R5PB-QJFollow us onFacebook- Page - https://www.facebook.com/NerdsAmalgamated/- Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/440485136816406/Twitter - https://twitter.com/NAmalgamatedSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6Nux69rftdBeeEXwD8GXrSiTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/top-shelf-nerds/id1347661094RSS - http://www.thatsnotcanonproductions.com/topshelfnerdspodcast?format=rssInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/nerds_amalgamated/General EnquiriesEmail - Nerds.Amalgamated@gmail.com

Big John returns to discuss more geeky stuffy. We dip into some Broadway geekiness, the weirdness that was the 90s, and how Big John became a t-shirt tycoon in Second Life. This week we've lost a lot of people that meant a lot to us: René Auberjonois, Carroll Spinney, and Ron Liebman. From Star Trek, to Sesame Street, to Rhinestone, let us remember these fine actors in the way that only HWIDG can. So, get mad. Get furious, my friends that the universe has taken three more powerful souls to fill it's engines. But while you do, remember that there are plenty of things still here that you can get mad at, like: * Clothes Material Importance * Feeling Inadequate * Suddenly Bad Art * Adopting Mobile Game CurrenciesFrom silk made of whispers to itchy, curly wool, clothes are made of a random assortment of materials. But one man's cotton is another man's polyester, so who are we to believe? What we need is a new standard of measuring the fit and feel of clothes so that you're not bamboozled by a shirt that shows the outline of your areola or one that feels like you're wearing kevlar. It's human to compare, but with social media these days, it's quite easy to curate your perceived life to be the absolute best. So don't fret when you're stuck cleaning toilets and your buddy Rick from high school is on his 3rd trip to Aruba this year. Because what he's not showing you is that his 2 kids are satan incarnate and he's doing kilos of coke on "buisness trips" just to feel *something* and he's cheating on his smoking hot blonde wife with every hotel maid he can just on the chance he can give his wife all the VD she can handle because she's bleeding their bank account dry.Ah, the American comic book industry. Is there anything better than monthly deadlines and corporate-mandated story guidelines to really make your art as best as it can be? Well tough titties Art McGee, dozens of people get it done without tracing 3D models, so don't you dare start or Marvel will give you a 5 year contract, because let's be honest, the comic nerds don't care about the art of it all unless you draw Spider-Woman's scoliosis twins just a hair too small.AMBER ALERT: $99.99 BEST VALUE HAS BROKEN OUT OF IT'S MOBILE JAIL CELL AND IS HEADED TOWARD YOU IN A GOLD-PLATED CADILLAC WITH LICENSE PLATE 'GIVCASH'. Science-fiction space opera on television is experiencing a real renaissance in the last few years, and at the tip of the spear is The Expanse. It's a sprawling, richly-conceived adaptation of the James S.A. Corey novels of the same name, set in a universe where mankind has colonized the solar system, but the same problems of paranoia, war, and distrust follow us out into space. The show nearly died last year when its previous home, Syfy, abruptly canceled it in the middle of its third season, but a vigorous fan campaign (and the largesse of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos) saw the prestige space drama move to Amazon Prime Video. Now, the fourth season is out, the budget is bigger, and the crew of the Rocinante is in even more hot water than ever. Helming the ship is showrunner Naren Shankar, a decades-long veteran of science fiction television from Star Trek: The Next Generation to The Outler Limits. I was lucky enough to sit down for a podcast interview with Shankar to talk about the show's rescue from cancellation, the scope afforded them by their new administrators, and what awaits the characters (and audiences) in a surprisingly planet-bound season 4. Also, we muse on the passing of the late, great Star Trek actor René Auberjonois. (More of a Comment, Really… is a proud member of the Chicago Podcast Coop.

On today’s ALL NEW Nerdtastically Newsworthy episode of #NerdORama we’ve got thoughts on the latest trailers from Black Widow, Wonder Woman 1984, Mulan & Star Girl…Plus we mark the passing of Nerd Hall of Fame actor René Auberjonois who has died at the age of 79. Auberjonois was best known in the nerd world for his role as Odo on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as well as animated roles, including characters on Batman: The Animated Series, Avatar the Last Airbender, Ben 10 Omniverse, Justice League: Unlimited, Archer, Young Justice, and more…In our original conversation with Mr. Auberjonois he had called in to mark the passing of fellow television and film icon Robert Guillaume and it was such a wonderful, heartfelt conversation that we wanted to share it again now…
In our seventeenth episode we join everyone's favourite dysfunctional coven - and guest, writer Nadia Bailey - as we return to Lancre for the 1992 Discworld novel, Lords and Ladies! The Lancre coven have returned from their trip abroad, but despite the impending royal wedding of Magrat and King Verence, all is not well in the Ramtops: it's circle time, when the walls between worlds are thin, and in the witches' absence someone has been toying with powers beyond their understanding. As usual Granny Weatherwax thinks she can sort everything out herself: facing down a young witch wannabe and keeping the Gentry at bay. But Granny is off her game. Is it the arrival of an old flame? Or is her time as a witch of Lancre nearly up? She'll need Nanny and Magrat's help to see off the threat of the Lords and Ladies... Bringing us back to the witches after only one book away, Lords and Ladies is a particularly Pratchett take on the ancient Celtic stories that inspired modern ideas of fairies and elves. One of the few novels to cross the streams between the witches and wizards, it also gives us more of a glimpse into Esme Weatherwax's past, hints at the future of witchcraft (and royalty) in Lancre, and introduces the infamous "Trousers of Time". Is this your favourite witches novel? What do you think of the parallel universes, other dimensions and alternate timelines it describes? And is this the best take on elves since Tolkien? We'd love to hear from you! Use the hashtag #Pratchat17 on social media to join the conversation. Don't forget that you can see Liz and Ben at both Speculate 2019 on March 15 and 16, and at Nullus Anxietas 7, the Australian Discworld Convention, on April 13 and 14! Plus Ben's new show, You Chose Poorly, plays at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival from April 1-7. Next month, to tie in with our appearance at Speculate, we'll be leaving the Discworld and blasting off into outer space as we discuss one of Pratchett's early sci-fi novels, The Dark Side of the Sun, with writer Will Kostakis! We'll likely be recording around the time of Speculate 2019, so get your questions in via social media before March 15th using the hashtag #Pratchat18. Show Notes and Errata: Nadia Bailey is an author, journalist and critic whose work has appeared in The Australian, The Age, The Lifted Brow and many others. The Book of Barb, an unofficial celebration of the surprisingly popular supporting character from the first season of Netflix "kids on bikes" drama Stranger Things, was her first book; it was followed by The Stranger Things Field Guide in December 2018. In between Nadia wrote The World's Best BFFs, a book of profiles of celebrity best friends. All three are published by Smith Street Books. We talk ships, but not starships! Odo has to confront his feelings when Kira's old friend Shakaar shows up and tries something new. No one goes anywhere, no new aliens are confronted, but we have a lot to say about this one. Is it, as Hugh says, "A pretty great episode of television, but not necessarily the best Star Trek"? Just how great is René Auberjonois? Pretty great. Just what does one do with an Odo... when in a relationship? In voicemails (1:04:20) Both Warren (@10rant) and Adam P. Newton (@dryvetyme) have more to say about the holodeck and Our Man Bashir We've moved to a new release day to accomodate A Discovery Home Companion. So, this weekend we all trooped over the treacherous wastelands of Mordor to Pwllheli in North Wales for the fifth Sci Fi Weekender. I had the absolute pleasure of conducting the inteview with the very lovely René Auberjonois on the main stage. Unfortunately due to a technical glitch it appears that my admission to The Little Mermaid being one of my favourite films and the ensuing chorus of Les Poissons will remain only in the memory of the attendees. Aside from that, I present you the panel in full. Enjoy.
