It's All Been Trekked Before

It's All Been Trekked Before #417  Season 13, Episode 19  Star Trek: Voyager #1.04 "Phage"    Jimmy-Jerome liked the Vidiian and character development. He also was on a bit of a lag, which led to more interruptions of the others than would be preferable. Shane refers to the bad guys as ‘rascals.' In this episode we answer emails from Chris, Will and Neelix.  We discuss the basics of transitioning from accumulation to decumulation, choosing funds for accumulation from a limited selection, more transitioning questions from an alien, my lawyerly approach to personal finance and why the public personal finance landscape is often not very helpful and leaves much to be desired.Frank addresses listener questions about transitioning from accumulation to retirement portfolios, focusing on timing and asset allocation decisions for different life stages. The episode explores foundational concepts about when to shift to a less aggressive portfolio and how to work around investment account limitations.Links:All Podcasts On One Web Page:  Risk Parity Radio RSS FeedMerriman ETF Recommendations:  Best-in-Class ETF Recommendations | Merriman Financial Education FoundationjBreathless Unedited AI-Bot Summary:Ready to make the leap from aggressive growth investing to a more balanced retirement portfolio? Join Frank Vasquez as he breaks down one of investing's most critical transitions through thoughtful analysis of listener questions spanning different life stages and portfolio challenges. We dive deep into the essential question of timing: when should you transition from accumulation to decumulation? Unlike conventional wisdom that focuses on market conditions, Frank reveals why your personal financial readiness should be the primary consideration. Learn why calculating your Financial Independence number is crucial and why your current spending patterns offer surprisingly reliable guidance for retirement planning. For younger investors struggling with 401(k) limitations, Frank offers practical strategies to achieve optimal asset allocation across multiple account types. His clear breakdown of why certain asset classes (looking at you, small-cap growth) deserve caution while others merit emphasis provides actionable guidance regardless of your investment timeline. What sets this episode apart is Frank's candid assessment of the personal finance media landscape. Drawing from his background cross-examining financial experts, he categorizes financial content into entertainment, sales, and education - explaining why most advice falls short for those who actually plan to spend money in retirement. His Bruce Lee-inspired approach to financial wisdom - "take what is useful, discard what is useless, and add something uniquely your own" - offers a refreshing framework for cutting through the noise.Whether you're decades from retirement or counting down the years, you'll gain valuable perspective on building a portfolio strategy that serves your actual spending goals rather than following the crowd. “The Cloud” 30th-anniversary reflections Several weeks into their journey home, both Janeway and Voyager find their energy reserves running low. For the captain, a simple trip to what used to be her private dining room for a cup of Neelix's even better than coffee substitute might be all that's needed. For the ship, however, a trip into a mysterious nebula is required. Voyager is hungry for omicron particles, and there seems to be a rich supply just ahead. But this cloud is not what it seems, and Janeway may need to turn to her animal guide to save the crew. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 30th-anniversary retrospective that will take you through all of Star Trek: Voyager, one episode at a time. Tuvix (Star Trek: Voyager, S2 E24) was recommended by Alex Russet , who said: I'm honestly shocked that this hasn't shown up in the podcast yet. It's the perfect fit for what you're doing. This Episode is fascinating to me. At It's very core is a trolly problem. Save the lives of two for the cost of one, or preserve the one at the cost of two. Both sides have valid points, but equally are both flawed responses to a situation with no truly correct response. But respond Janeway must. And while it was fairly obvious which option would be chosen, (Tim Russ and Ethan Phillips had bills to pay), it still hit hard. Not every option is black and white. How much is a life worth? Do the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few? I think the fandom as a whole settled on Team Tuvix, myself included, but I think this episode is captivating from a series famous for it's moralizing.Tuvix first aired on May 6, 1996, written by story by Andrew Shepard Price and Mark Gaberman, teleplay by Kenneth Biller, and directed by Cliff BoleA transporter accident merges Tuvok and Neelix into a new person. The Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook

Repentance (Star Trek: Voyager, S7 E13) was recommended by Rugger (They/them), who said: A lot of Voyager's preachy episodes fall flat, but this one always makes me pause. When I first watched this episode as a child, it shaped how I see justice. And, plot-wise, Repentance does a great job of combining a dialogue-heavy, philosophical discussion with real pathos for the murderer, Iko, and linking that pathos to an ongoing character arc with Seven. While Trek is expectedly against the death penalty, this episode keeps from being one-sided by the sub-plot with Neelix and Joleg.Repentance first aired on January 31, 2001, written by story by Mike Sussman and Robert Doherty, teleplay by Robert Doherty, and directed by Mike VejarPrisoners are brought onto Voyager from a damaged alien vessel, and the crew must deliver them to their destination – for execution. These questions, and more, will be answered on today's softball episode of Star Trek: Voyager. Episode discussion starts at 17:53. This is episode 14/17 in our look at Voyager. Casual Trek - A Star Trek Recap and Ranking Podcast

Jeri Taylor- (June 30, 1938 to October 24, 2024) was a screenwriter and producer for many TV shows, including Star Trek The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager. In dedication to her memory, we're talking about three of her scripted episodes. In ‘Night Terrors,' the Enterprise crew are having trouble sleeping and people's REM levels are dropping (insert your own Radiohead joke here, we did) and it's making everyone go a little crazy. Meanwhile, Neelix gets into true crime for his early morning TV show in ‘Investigations' and bites off more than he can chew while uncovering a traitor in the midst. Then back to the Enterprise for ‘The Drumhead' which gave us one of the more infamous Picard facepalm memes, but is it enough to put it at Number One on the Big List? If not, you might find yourself on trial for subversion!Episodes Discussed: Night Terrors (14:02), Investigations (39:29) and The Drumhead (01:01:50).Talking Points Include: Elementary, Ranma 1/2, The Clash, the joys of lighting hydrogen on fire, Silent Hill-esque horror, we get another ‘The Rimmer of the Enterprise' in Gillespie, some surprising scenes of Worf trying to unalive himself and can Data do white noise to help with sleep? Voyager's bad workplace politics, would Neelix be a Murderino? Voyager trying to bring a unwanted subplot that we don't really understand to a conclusion, we're not in the mood for McCarthy-ism in the Drumhead but that's okay, this episode has all the subtlety of a brick, Joseph McCarthy is the WORST person to come out of Wisconsin, but who are the best people to come from Wisconsin?

Tread Perilously's Star Trek Month 2024 continues with the long-delayed episode of Star Trek: Voyager called "Bride of Chaotica!" Tom Paris and Ensign Harry Kim's afternoon playing chapter 18 of "The Adventures of Captain Proton" is disrupted when Voyager runs aground in a "subspace sandbar." It immediately disrupts quality of life systems on the ship and prevents the Holodeck from shutting down Paris's program. Meanwhile, transdimensional aliens materialize in the simulation and assume its 1940s movie  serial nature to be real because they are energy-based life-forms. Will Paris figure out a way to communicate or will it fall on Captain Janeway to save the day by becoming the bride of Chaotica? Erik is immediately annoyed to be watching a Tom Paris episode of Voyager. Justin can't help but notice its similarity to a certain episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Episode co-writer Bryan Fuller also makes Erik doubtful it will be able to rise out of its Paris deficit. Justin argues for Garrett Wang to be the true lead in the story. Various 1940s movie serial tropes are examined. Kate Mulgrew gets top marks for understanding the assignment. Tuvok turns out to be a font of deadpan gold. Justin is dismayed by the lack of Robert Picardo and circumstances force a discussion of Neelix.

Neelix was a primarily Talaxian (also one-eighth Mylean) hybrid who lived in the 24th century. He joined the USS Voyager when it was pulled into the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker's array in 2371. While Voyager made a seven-year journey through the Delta Quadrant, he served as the ship's chef, morale officer, trade negotiator, "ambassador to the Delta Quadrant" and navigator, in addition to forming close personal friendships with many crew members and becoming a valuable member of the stranded Starfleet crew. When Voyager wrapped up leaving everyone wanting more, pitching some spicy alternate endings could have avoided the All Good Things comparison. But if there's no extra time to make a finale truly great, expectations shouldn't be too high for for a Star Trek podcast either. Why exactly is local news suffering? How did the writers' room launder Neelix's character? Whose personal development was the most grating? It's the episode that never says no without a number.Support the production of The Greatest GenerationGet a thing at podshop.biz!Sign up for our mailing list!Follow The Game of Buttholes: The Will of the Caretaker! The Greatest Generation is produced by Wynde PriddySocial media is managed by Rob Adler and Bill TilleyMusic by Adam Ragusea & Dark MateriaFriends of DeSoto for: Labor | Democracy | JusticeDiscuss the show using the hashtag #GreatestGen and find us on social media:YouTube | Facebook | X | Instagram | TikTok | Mastodon | Bluesky | ThreadsAnd check out these online communities run by FODs: Reddit | USS Hood Discord | Facebook group | Wikia | FriendsOfDeSoto.social

When Voyager finds Talaxians living in a rock, the Delta Flyer crashes there just in time for a demolition notice. But when Dexa and Brax take a liking to Neelix, he helps them draw a line in the regolith that only a Prime Directive breach could resolve. Which is the rarest Yeager? Do these Talaxians need an Iceland app? What's the best way to avoid dancing at a wedding?
