Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock are built around one key piece of technology which may or may not have real world implications.“KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!”Admiral James Tiberius Kirk, 2285There are countless reasons why fans love Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Up until that point, it was the most action-packed installment of Star Trek ever put on screen, so that certainly has something to do with it. William Shatner delivers an all-time great career performance in this one as Admiral James T. Kirk, full of downright Shakespearean drama with his old enemy, the diabolical Khan Noonien Singh. It's got at least one of the most memorable, shocking, and poignant moments in franchise history. Or maybe it's just Ricardo Montalban's magnificent chest. Who's to say?But possibly lost amidst all that magnificence is the fact that The Wrath of Khan is built around a truly great piece of science fiction with the Genesis Device. A project designed to help Starfleet terraform barren worlds is also potentially the ultimate weapon in the galaxy, given that in creating new life it first has to wipe out anything else that's there. Of course the wrong people want to get their grubby mitts on it!In this episode we're diving into just what it would take to truly terraform an alien world, and whether the Genesis Device follows its own rules in the Star Trek universe. Check out the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here…SUGGESTED VIEWING Star Trek II: The Wrath of KhanYou mean to tell us you're watching or listening to a Roddenberry podcast and you somehow haven't seen Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan? We sure hope you watched it before this episode spoiled the absolute hell out of it for you! But in all seriousness, there's a reason this is the most critically acclaimed and beloved Star Trek movie of all time and why we chose it for this week's topic. Star Trek III: The Search for SpockBut also, you can't watch The Wrath of Khan (or get a full picture of the scope of the Genesis Device's implications) without also watching Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Forget that even number/odd number nonsense about the Star Trek movies, this one is just as essential!Star Trek: The Original Series Season 1 Episode 22 “Space Seed”And just in case you've never done this, we also highly recommend “Space Seed” which first introduced Ricardo Montalban as Khan Noonien Singh. It doesn't have anything to do with terraforming in space, but it's a classic bit of Star Trek lore, nonetheless! The Evolution of Planet EarthWant a real life taste of what the Genesis Device does…except over the course of millions/billions of years instead of minutes/hours? This video is pretty cool.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! TerraformingWhile still primarily a science fiction concept, the idea of using terraforming to make a planet or moon into something that can support life as we know it is gaining considerable steam as we look to our nearest neighbor, Mars. See also: Bionengineering“Is there life on…Venus?”Wait, that's not how the song goes! But the key here is that while Mars gets all the attention as the planet in our solar system with the most potential to support life, there's also a chance that Venus could, as well. Key to that is the presence of phosphine in the atmosphere, which scientists have gone back and forth on, but recently found new evidence that it may be present.“PIXAAAAAAR!”Read more about that funny connection between a beloved animation studio and these beloved Trek movies here.“Colonized by earth bacteria”It doesn't take long, just to give you an idea of how quickly “life finds a way.”The Mars TrilogyTamara brings up Kim Stanley Robinson's acclaimed trilogy about terraforming our nearest planetary neighbor, Red Mars, Green Mars, and Blue Mars. There's also the follow-up The Martians which is a collection of short stories that expands this universe further.Project Hail MaryAnother Tamara recommendation this week is the Hugo Award-nominated Project Hail Mary from sci-fi author Andy Weir. You might also recognize Weir's name as the author of The Martian, which was adapted into a beloved film from director Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon. The Wrath of Khan: The Novel!Even if you've seen Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan dozens of times, Vonda N. McIntyre's superb novelization of the film is full of surprises that will enrich your understanding of the story and your love of Trek in general. For extra credit, follow it up with her equally great (possibly better than the film it's based on!) novelization of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock!WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?Go back to the very beginning with the first ever episode of Does it Fly? which tackled another iconic Star Trek concept: the transporter. Watch it right here! We're not particularly big on the whole Star Trek vs. Star Wars debate around these parts, so for those folks who love ‘em both, check out our episode on lightsabers right here!FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! [Review starts at 21:13] Matt from The Shuttle Pod fills in for Laurie this week to cover the news with Tony. We cover the latest award news, and speculate about the announced Star Trek collaborations, including the one with Doctor Who. There’s also a little casting update for Starfleet Academy and a story tidbit from the “Star Trek Origin Movie.” Turning to Prodigy the guys discuss our latest interview with the Hageman brothers and roll a preview clip of Tony’s brand-new interview with Wil Wheaton. We then run Tony and Laurie’s previously recorded review of Prodigy season 2 episodes 11-15, discussing how the show takes a bit of a pivot in tone, and takes deeper dives into the characters, with some fun diversions along the way. But we still can’t figure out where the show stands on the whole J/C thing. The podcast wraps up with a brief preview of STLV coming in the first week of August, which will include a TrekMovie.com panel.

Directed by J. J. Abrams and written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, Star Trek is the science fiction action film based on television series of the same name. Luke and Jason branch off into a new timeline by revisiting 2009 for the 11th film in the Star Trek franchise, and the first in the rebooted film series that features the main characters of Star Trek: The Original Series. Aboard the USS Enterprise, the most-sophisticated starship ever built, a novice crew embarks on its maiden voyage. Their path takes them on a collision course with Romulan commander Nero (Eric Bana). If humanity would survive, a rebellious young officer named James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and a coolly logical Vulcan named Spock (Zachary Quinto) must move beyond their rivalry and find a way to defeat Nero before it is too late.
Married Trekkie couple, Nicole and Joe, are joined by writer, editor, and producer Laurie Ulster, to discuss "Rejoined" (s04e06 of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) and the relationship between Jadzia Dax and Lenara Kahn! Laurie is a senior editor at Trekmovie.com and a co-host of the All-Access Trek podcast. [Discovery 507 review starts at 24:00] Laurie is still away on vacation, so once again Shuttle Pod’s Matt Wright joins Anthony to talk about the Trek news of the week, and again we start with the chaos at Paramount Global as they continue talks with Skydance and Sony/Apollo, with our analysis of what this all could mean for Star Trek’s future. In better news, the Star Trek franchise just won a Peabody Award. We then catch up with the latest from some Kirks: Chris Pine wondering why Star Trek 4 needs yet another screenwriter, and William Shatner pondering the possibility of returning to Trek through the magic of CGI de-aging. Turning to Star Trek: Discovery, they get an update from Doug Jones explaining his mid-season absence (he took time off to promote Hocus Pocus 2) before rolling in some audio from Tony’s new interview with actor Elias Toufexis, including what it was like for him to perform as L’ak in “Erigah” in full makeup in a bed for the whole episode. The avowed Star Trek fan also took on a nitpicky question about the Breen from “Erigah” as well. NOTE: The full interview with Elias will be going up on TrekMovie.com this weekend. We then rolled in our previously recorded review with Laurie for “Erigah” where she and Tony agreed it was a strong fast-paced episode that got a lot done for the season plot and the characters, with a lot of fun from Reno and more. Matt sticks around for bits of the week, where we take a look at Michelle Yeoh’s Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a recently unearthed film from one of the fist Star Trek conventions in the 1970s.

A LOVE STORY? When Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and Commissioner Nancy Hedford discover Zefram Cochrane is both still alive and under the influence of an electrical cloud that has fallen in love with him, it's just the setup for perhaps the deepest exploration of love in Star Trek history. Joining Bryan to discuss this BIG SWING from 1967 is Laurie Ulster from TrekMovie.com. Can she and Bryan agree on a final grade for this one?Two podcast episodes to check out which Bryan references in the episode: 1) The remastering of TOS for HD on Inglorious Treksperts2) "Metamorphosis" director Ralph Senensky on the Scott Mantz Star Trek podcast, Enterprise Incidents
Anthony and Laurie start with the latest intel on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Then it’s time to get into the latest live events: Tony talks about his experience at Star Trek San Francisco and the podcasters talk about panels with Melissa Navia, Robert Picardo (about Prodigy), and Lower Decks cast members. Then it’s Discovery time! Laurie and Tony play clips from TrekMovie’s red carpet interviews with Sonequa Martin-Green, Alex Kurtzman, Michelle Paradise, Wilson Cruz, Doug Jones, and Blu del Barrio, who talk about what to expect in season 5 as well as the legacy of the show itself and what might come in the future. They wrap up with their own spoiler-free thoughts on the first four episodes of the new season.

SOME MALE BONDING is all the crew behind Star Trek: Enterprise needed to get excited again about their show late in the first season. This bottle episode that was largely a two-hander wound up bonding actors Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating IRL. Does this one evoke the adventure and progressivism that are the hallmarks of Trek, or does it tend to scratch the itch of its corporate masters who want a more conventional network TV show? Joining Bryan to discuss another episode in TMK's Two Hander series are Kayla Iacovino & Brian Drew, hosts of Shuttle Pod on the TrekMovie.com feed. Does this popular episode make a whole lot of sense? More importantly, is it a TREK, MARRY, or KILL?The grades begin at (19:08).
Some Star Trek news has been bubbling under the surface since episode 79. Is it real? Is it fake? Are we content farming? Maybe! Daredevil is not the only Netflix series confirmed now as MCU canon - the entire Defenders saga can be seen within the MCU Timeline on Disney+. This is a big deal for fans of the Netflix shows who have called for them to be canonized for years. The Defenders shows fit into the timeline starting with Daredevil after I Am Groot and ending with The Punisher before Doctor Strange. There's also a rumor Deborah Ann Wolf and Elden Hansen are set to return as Karen Page and Foggy Nelson in Daredevil: Born Again. Trekkies will soon see their favorite franchise back on the big screen with director Toby Haynes on the bridge in the captain's chair. Haynes recently directed several episodes of the Star Wars hit show Andor. With Seth Grahame-Smith writing and JJ Abrams' Bad Robot producing, it has been 8 years since the last Star Trek movie - though this one is to take place decades before the 2009 Star Trek movie plot. Paramount has had recent Star Trek success in the television world, streaming Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, Picard, and Discovery. Though this prequel may not show the Chris Pine-led cast we are used to seeing, there are still plans to have a final movie with that crew in the future. We keep talking about Tom Cruise and now for an even bigger announcement…a Top Gun 3 movie is officially in development to bring back that loving feeling. Top Gun: Maverick writer Ethan Kruger is already writing for the new installment and sources report director Joe Kosinski will also be back to pilot the film. This news comes to us shortly after the partnership announced with Cruise and Warner Bros. Discovery. Top Gun: Maverick raked in an astounding $1.5 billion in 2022 and Cruise looks like he's willing to continue the legacy with a third film. Rumors are flying that DC Studios will begin their search for a Supergirl actress soon. In the mix for frontrunners we have Milly Aycock of house of the dragon, Emilia Jones from Coda and Locke and Key, and Meg Donnelly of the Zombies franchise and DC Animation where she plays supergirl. James Gunn and Peter Safran announced the Supergirl, Woman of Tomorrow movie in 2022 based on the comics by Tom King. Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, the director and writer of the 2002 zombie horror film 28 Days Later, are reuniting for 28 Years Later, a sequel to the original. The pair are hoping to launch a trilogy of films set in the universe. Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss opened up for the first time about their canceled Star Wars movie in the cover story for last week's Hollywood Reporter, stating that the concept for their film dealt with the rise of the first Jedi and how the Jedi Order came to be. The Last of Us Season 2 has cast Beef star Young Mazino as Jesse. The series is expected to start production soon. Isabela Merced has also been cast as Dina. Barbie and Shang-Chi star Simu Liu will host the 2024 People's Choice Awards which will air live on NBC, E!, and Peacock on February 18. Director David Gordon Green, who was initially set to direct a sequel to last year's Exorcist: Believer titled Exorcist: Deceiver, has exited the project. Universal originally planned for the film to hit theaters on April 18, 2025, but the timetable is now unclear as the studio searches for a new director. Noah Hawley, the showrunner of the upcoming FX series "Alien," revealed in an interview that the series is set on Earth approximately 70 years in the future, preceding the events of the original film series. Despite discussions with Ridley Scott, Hawley explained that he won't incorporate the backstory from "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant" into his series, expressing a preference for the original films' retro-futuristic technology over the more advanced tech featured in the prequels.

TRIAL BY RETCON. Ohhhh, sorry Captain Kirk. Turns out it's fairly common for the captain of (the) Enterprise to stand trial on the Klingon home world. Jonathan Archer did it 80 years before you were even born! Our Trials of Season Two theme month continues with this rehash of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country with some DS9 "Tribunal" thrown in for good measure as David Goodman, the President of the Writers Guild of America, jumps from sitcoms to Star Trek to co-write an episode that borrows heavily from established franchise history. Is it a winner or all too familiar? The grades begin at (19:06). Also, Bryan makes a big mistake when he references Tuvok being on the Excelsior during Star Trek VI as being in the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Timeless" when we ALL know it's "Flashback."If you're enjoying the show, consider subscribing and rating us five stars on your podcast platform of choice. And don't forget to check out our monthly spotlight on the animated shows. This month: Laurie Ulster from TrekMovie.com joined Bryan to judge the first two episodes from The Animated Series (1973).
THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY of the debut of The Animated Series more or less coincides with Trek Marry Kill's 1ST ANNIVERSARY, and so to celebrate both, Bryan has decided to remove this podcast's original sin of holding the animated shows off to the side by fully embracing them with the first of what will be monthly special episodes dedicated to animated episodes. Joining him for the first special episode is Laurie Ulster of TrekMovie.com, who hosts the All Access Podcast on that network. She also copy edited Star Trek: The Official Guide to the Animated Series, an awesome reference guide for this Emmy-nominated Saturday morning cartoon that's not "just" a cartoon -- it's animated Star Trek! This month, the first two episodes of the series. One written by the same guy who wrote the first episode of The Original Series and the other written by D.C. Fontana, perhaps the second-most important writer in franchise history after Gene Roddenberry. Hear about Bryan's chance encounter with her back in 2016. The grades begin at (22:15). "Yesteryear" discussion begins at (48:23). This episode features some old promos for which you can see here on YouTube. One of those promos is an old "Keep America Beautiful" PSA. Our theme is "70's Synth Funk Jam" by Phill_Dillow on Pixabay. We also use a snippet from Luis Humanoide from Pixabay's "Space Fleet" during our bridge. If you're liking the show, consider rating us five stars on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen.
A HAUNTED HOUSE traps Kirk, Spock, and McCoy who are teased, tortured, and brainwashed by a pair of bickering aliens from another galaxy -- one of which transforms from a simple black house cat to a forced perspective oversized black house cat meant to suggest a panther! That's not the goofiest thing that happens in this episode and there's a lot more scary stuff surrounding the episode's production, from diva actors to tragedy. The grades begin at (32:06).TOMORROW, Bryan will be joined by Laurie from TrekMovie.com to talk about **two** episodes from The Animated Series in our new monthly bonus episode focusing on The Animated Series and Lower Decks. If you're enjoying the show, tell your friends or give us a review on Apple Podcasts and five stars, if you feel so inclined. And you can check out how many Treks, Marrys, and Kills we've handed out at www.trekmarrykillpod.com.

With the TrekMovie gang all at the STLV 57-Year Mission Convention, this week’s pod doesn’t include a news wrapup and focuses solely on reviewing the new musical episode of Strange New Worlds. TrekMovie editor and Shuttle Pod co-host Matt Wright joins Tony and Laurie to talk about “Subspace Rhapsody.” As is certainly the case with fans in general, this “big swing” of an episode garnered differing opinions among the group, but all the podcasters were impressed with the artistry that went into crafting the singing and dancing and how the songs were tied into the character arcs from the season.

While investigating a mysterious signal emanating from a lone planet in the Cepheus System, the Enterprise is bombarded by an energy beam that temporarily immobilizes the crew and damages the ship's dilithium crystals. That turns out to be the beginning of a much bigger problem when the Enterprise crew begins to shrink, and it is only a matter of time before they become too small to operate their own ship. "The Terratin Incident" is a fun episode to be sure, but in this case, the problem is far more enticing than the solution. The greatest danger facing the shrinking Enterprise crew turns out to be the Enterprise itself, but the episode falls apart with a convoluted resolve that doesn't make sense. Regardless, when "The Terratin Incident" works, it really works, and who can resist the image of a tiny Captain Kirk trying to use a giant Communicator?
