When you hear the phrase living legend, what comes to mind?....to me…this is someone who has lived a life to their fullest. A life that inspires us to be our best. Someone whose legacy will outlast them.Today, I have the pleasure of releasing my conversation with a true living legend…Bob Gaines. Bob began climbing in the mid-1970s—right in the thick of climbing's golden era, alongside icons like Ron Kauk, Scott Cosgrove, John Bachar, John Long, and Lynn Hill. But Bob wasn't just in the audience—he was part of the show. He became John Long's main climbing partner for five years. He trained hard, soloed hard, and became a Joshua Tree lifer—watching legends like Bachar soloing 5.10s and 11s before most people had their morning coffee. It's easy to remember these iconic names like John Bachar and Lynn Hill, but Bob Gaines has his own right to stand amongst these icons of climbing. With nearly 600 first ascents under his belt, and 500 of them located solely in Joshua Tree California. Bob has certainly stamped his name into the history of climbing. His routes are known for being clean, creative, and undeniably classic—if you're on a Bob Gaines line, chances are you're giving it four stars on Mountain Project. This episode marks Bob's first-ever podcast appearance. I give him the chance to share his origin story. How he found climbing and how the icons of history directly influenced his journey. We dive deep into several of his key first ascents, so get out your MP and be ready to add a bunch of climbs to your to do list. We explore the controversial issue of bolting, how that process developed over the decades, and how we are currently in a time period where we may lose the freedom to bolt in wilderness areas entirely. We explore Bob's unique experience in Hollywood as a stunt double for William Shatner in Star Trek V and safety officer for the 1993 movie Cliffhanger. And finally we speak about Bob's unique experience as a climbing instructor for SEAL Team 6. This is a rare, wide-ranging conversation with a man who's lived more life than most of us can imagine.----HELP SUPPORT THE SHOW & GET ACCESS TO EXCLUSIVE EPISODES!  For a little as $5/mo!----Don't forget to check out our full video episodes on Youtube! The TCM movement is growing but we need your help to spread the word! eam mich rauf, Scotty! Wiz DOES NOT RECOMMEND Star Trek V: The Final Frontier Before I get to the review, I just want to say that it's interesting how Star Trek ping-pongs between different styles of stories and it still somehow feels right with the series itself. In the past four, we've had artsy and contemplative (The Motion Picture), tense revenge film (Wrath of Khan), a more standard action drama (Search For Spock) and a parody of sorts (The Voyage Home) and somehow they seem to fit well with the overall feel of the series. With The Final Frontier, Shatner's crack at directing, it's more of a cheesy 80s action comedy. There seems to be more banter and quips between all of the Enterprise crew which in turn leads to some fun character moments. But this comes at a cost: special effects are, yet again, worse then they were in previous films. Whether it's a sign of how the effects were back then or not, they lack an impact and visual fidelity that both the first and second have, but three and four sidestepped the issue by not having so much of those elements in their films. Not so with The Final Frontier: Stunts and special effects seem goofy and unnatural, especially when spliced with obvious green screen effects. The action, otherwise, is passable: there are some decent shootouts and some okay fight scenes that could have been better. But the film does an about-face when it comes to tone by the third act. This is due to the villain of the film Sybok, played by Laurence Luckinbill. Through most of the film, Sybok is portrayed as a cult leader of sorts that brainwashes people to joining his cause. But as the film moves forward, his "power" gets incredibly muddled in it's explanation. It's not clear whether it's a power he possesses or that he is just a good emotional manipulator, but somehow Bones, Kirk and Spock aren't affected because...reasons. And then there is the end of the film. Let's just say that when the main villain is "God" (or someone like him), the discovery and what happens next needs to work in a profound or interesting way...and it does neither. In honesty, The Final Frontier has a problem with both tone and consistency. This isn't something to fault William Shatner on in the director's chair. No, this started in the script phase and either they should have made it a more spiritually focused journey or Lethal Weapon in space. The half-and-half approach didn't work. Despite the film still being entertaining in spots, it's something I wouldn't recommend.

Not content with the leading role in every Star Trek thing ever, William Shatner takes a seat in both the captain's and the director's chair for Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. So how will Shatner's Trek directorial debut compare to what's come before? If you guessed 'More unicorns, Uhura takes her clothes off, and Spock shoots God in the face?' - my word you're good, which is more than we can say for the actual movie. OR IS IT? Perhaps watching The Final Frontier as the next step on our Trek trek lends it enough context as to soften our hearts. Is Rob a Star Trek fan yet? Row, row, row your starship. Jay and Nate review Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.  Inspired by a late-night viewing of televangelists and wanting to boldly go in a different direction, William Shatner's concept for the fifth Star Trek movie was ambitious - too ambitious for the studio and faced budget cuts, outsourced effects, and a general sense of apathy from those involved. However, the cast all talk about what a good time they had making this entry. So is it worthy of re-evaluation after missing audiences in release? Or is this a frontier best left unexplored. Mark Maddox and I continue our journey through the first six Star Trek movies and now reach THE FINAL FRONTIER (1989). We have been both dreading and looking forward to revisiting this film. Thirty-five years later is it still as bad we remember? Are there hidden moments of quality buried in this bad idea given cinematic form? Join us as we pull this thing apart and inspect it's sad remains. We use Shatner's own story of the production from his Movie Memories book to supplement the usual sources. It adds a lot to know the genesis of the film's basic story and emphasizes just how easily a poor central concept can cripple a project. Also, aspiring writers can take note of this film as a solid example of bad scriptwriting on nearly every level. Neither of us find much to admire in STAR TREK V but there are a few good moments. Sadly, those few quality elements have to rest side by side with insults to nearly every regular character and simply awful dialog. The film's humor mostly revolves around laughing ‘at' the characters and never ‘with' them. It undermines so many years of goodwill built up by the franchise for the sake of bad jokes, dumb ideas and idiotic coincidences that we can only be grateful it wasn't the last film to feature the original cast. Row, row, row your boat indeed. Comments about this film, the podcast or Star Trek in general can be sent to thebloodypit@gmail.com and we'll be happy to hear from you. Thank you for listening and we'll be back soon.

Ship Profile: NCC-1701-AThe history of onscreen Enterprises is rich in detail for some and scant for others. Then there's the U.S.S. Enterprise-A.First introduced in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home as a reward for our TOS-era heroes saving Earth once again, we saw this Constitution refit-class in the next two movies (Star Trek V and Star Trek VI). The trio looks at this ship's origins and purported ending, discovering more mysteries about it than first thought. They look at the largely non-canon origins of the ship, and ask if the U.S.S. Yorktown, then recommissioned as the Enterprise-A, was a new or quite old vessel? What about the history of the Constitution-class and its refits in general? What are the differences, if any, between the refit NCC-1701 and the NCC-1701-A? What was the A's mission in between its malfunctioning introduction in Star Trek V and its scheduled decommissioning in Star Trek VI?Join us as we discuss all things about the first Enterprise to add a letter to its registry and the last with Captain Kirk in command.
