We all get angry. How quickly do you get there and what do you do with it? Most of us speak too quickly, often before we think. What if you learned to be quiet a little more often. And nearly all of us do not listen enough. What if we truly did listen twice as much as we speak? Maybe, just maybe our walk with Jesus and our relationship with others would be more fruitful, more consistent, less troublesome. We all would do well to memorize in our minds, mouths and hearts James 1:19. Especially the lines, “be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry”. Imagine how differently good it would be.Do you have prayer requests? In today's section of our new study of the book of James, we learn that there are two desired outcomes for our lives, one from God and one from Satan. God desires to give us wonderful gifts, the real deal, life now and life eternal. Satan offers only counterfeits of the “good and perfect gifts” God offers. But guess which gifts we often choose? Satan is the master of deception, the “Father of Lies.” James offers a wonderful explanation of his strategies to ruin us, and also offers a beautiful, contrasting picture of God, the “Father of Lights” who wants to give us “every good and perfect gift.” Who's your daddy?Do you have prayer requests? If you laughed a bit at the title of this new series, you were not alone. And that's because you and I (and every other non-delusional person) know that perfection on human terms is not going to happen. Still, the scriptures show that we are “being perfected”—being made complete—as we, through grace and the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, become more and more like Jesus. Part of that comes with age and wisdom and experience. Part of it comes because we want it to come. Most of it comes simply by the grace of God as He works His work in redeeming and re-creating us. James, the half-brother of Jesus Christ, is literally giving us a “how to” manual as it relates to living the Christian life. It's practical. It's daunting. It's certainly convicting. As we take our first overhead look today, you, too, will come to understand when I say, “James would understand.”Do you have prayer requests? It can be almost overwhelming sometimes when we sit back and watch the world spinning ever-so-quickly toward anarchy and chaos. We see it world-wide, but we can't help but see it in our own nation, especially when we consider the corruption and/or ineptitude of leadership at the highest levels. Sometimes it feels like we don't have a chance! But if you look back through history, even to the time when Jesus came to earth, it was really much the same. Evil rulers dominated the landscape and tried their best to exert their evil wills in all directions. One was a dynasty we know as “the Herods.” Bottom line, though, is that the Herods are all gone. And even though new evil leaders will and do follow in their footsteps, their day will end. They will die and face inescapable judgment. But Jesus conquered death, and He still lives! It's good to remember history; it's good to have open eyes and see what's going on. But maybe it's better to keep our eyes on God and remember that our God reigns! He is not a God of chaos. In fact, it is out of chaos that He creates order, exactly according to His purpose. You can trust Him!Do you have prayer requests? The “GOING” part of the great commission is pretty clear. What's harder to come by is the answer to two HUGE little questions the great commission begs be asked: “HOW?” and “WHO?”In today's message we consider those questions, and we take a look at the life of a man God called long ago, and then sent. Maybe what this man Isaiah learned in the process can teach us. And just maybe, how he answered the questions can inspire us to do the same.Do you have prayer requests? The question was asked of Jesus, “and who is my neighbor”? In our series entitled GOING we are reminded the importance of our taking the message of Jesus to those who need to know Him. One of Jesus' most overlooked commands is the last thing he ever said to his disciples. We are quick to obey some of his other commands, but often struggle to obey this most important one. Because of the resurrection, we have an inside track to the best news the world has ever known, yet we struggle to share it. This week, we are reminded that “Going” means obeying Jesus' command to “make disciples” “as we are going.” Do you have prayer requests? We continue the thread we started last Sunday when we asked the two biggest questions of life: 1) Can we trust God? 2) WILL we trust God? There is no more teaching of God more challenging—or more ignored likely—than His command to be generous in our giving back to Him. Whether you're talking about tithing, as was commanded in the Old Testament, or the even more generous giving anticipated by the covenant of grace—it's a tall order sometimes. But when we will actually DO IT, actually trust Him with all of our stuff, some amazing things will happen that can be experienced in no other way. Join us today as we step back into a story where a “widow bit” was more than enough!Do you have prayer requests? We all know the frustration of failing at something repeatedly because our wishes to change and efforts to change are never quite enough. In this first message in our “Growing” focus, we will look quickly at three biblical scenes in which people by themselves were not enough until God made the difference. In all three cases, part of the work to be done toward growth involves getting outside of our mediocre, comfortable and often sick complacency, and then allowing God to transform us or our situations with His power.Do you have prayer requests? Everyone needs someone who comes alongside of them in life to encourage them along the way, someone who has their back, but also is willing to speak truth to them when needed. Not only do you need someone like Barnabas in your life, but you need to be that for someone else. A recurring message of scripture though the stories of Advent is this: “Don't be afraid!” It seems to always be the first word from God's messengers, and with good reason! But fear is such an ever-present reality in our lives, isn't it? In a positive way our fear can keep us alive, when we are afraid of the right things. And we all know that our fears can keep us awake at night. But we may not realize that the worst side-effect of fear is that it can easily keep us from living the lives God wants us to. Before we put away all the lights of Christmas, let's be reminded of why God says so often in scripture: “You don't have to be afraid anymore!” Do you have prayer requests?Get in touch directly with the team at WACC using thislink: https://wacconline.org/prayer-requestWe look forward to hearing from you! One of the things that makes the Christmas story so winsome is that it involves a lot of ordinary people, people much like us. It doesn't make sense that God would do it this way. But there we are, and there they were. Mary, Joseph, cousins, shepherds, government officials, innkeepers, even an emperor—all pawns designed to be used by God to star in this very story. It's a good reminder that God is always at work, and that God's plans will be worked out through us or in spite of us—because God's plan never fails.Do you have prayer requests? A lot of people have no idea about the true meaning of Christmas. And perhaps a lot of Christians, even though they connect Jesus with December 25th, don't fully realize themselves the depth of love and planning that went into the perfect gift. The gift of Jesus was certainly no accident on that first Christmas, having been prophesied for hundreds of years; the culmination of that gift, when the skin-covered Son of God was nailed to a cross, was not the unfortunate ending of a badly-planned campaign that God had to miraculously tweak into something grand. The cross was planned , as we are told in Revelation, when Jesus the lamb was “slain before the foundation of the world.”Do you have prayer requests? For us, Christmas has become about exchanging gifts, and a great deal of effort and expense goes into this process. But any gift we might ever give is but a feeble echo of the greatest exchange EVER, when God wrapped Himself in a package of human skin and gave us the gift of His very presence. His gift is indescribable and inexpressible: not only did He give us His proximity, He gave us His blood. In this story, the gift is everything for a people who had nothing, and nothing to give in return, except our worship.Do you have prayer requests? Jake leads us through the overarching story of the Bible and how God, since the beginning of time, has contextualized himself, ultimately through Jesus. Throughout history, the methods of God and the Church have changed, but the message stays the same. God is the great I AM. Human habit finds us often in a doldrums of sorts, as we rock along for months, years, even decades—and convince ourselves that everything stays pretty much the same, or we hope that it will. Truth is-- nothing ever stays the same. Even within the span of what is familiar and comfortable and known to us, change has been ongoing. And that is because change is what God does. Today as we consider the future of WACC, we hear God saying, from Isaiah, “Forget the former things, do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up. Do you not perceive it?” God is doing a new thing. Let's perceive it. Let's not miss it. Let's embrace it Because if God is in it, it will be good!Do you have prayer requests?Get in touch directly with the team at WACC using thislink: https://wacconline.org/prayer-requestWe look forward to hearing from you! While the past often haunts and taunts and stokes present regrets and fears, and while the past deeply impacts our present and future, there is no time like the present! The present moment is fleeting, becoming the past as each second ticks off the clock. But it is right here and right now that we make decisions, offer commitments, determine our priorities and decide to quit living in the past. Today, right here, right now is when God wants us to live abundantly, without the weight of old chains or the paralyzing fear of the unknown. Living in Christ, this is possible! Today we will also consider the “state of the union” of WACC in 2023.Do you have prayer requests?Get in touch directly with the team at WACC using thislink: https://wacconline.org/prayer-requestWe look forward to hearing from you! oday we spend some time looking back, which is really more about looking forward than we typically realize. As WACC nears a milestone—75 years as a church—it is important for us to note how we got here and even remember some of the “good ghosts” (wonderful witnesses now long (or recently) dead) who helped WACC get off to a great start. Any church that makes it to 75 years has allowed itself to be “reborn” already once or twice. Any church that hopes to make it to 100 years cannot forget the past, but maybe even more importantly, cannot forget that with God's help we are contributing to that “past” by the choices we are making in the present.Do you have prayer requests? Only God can heal miraculously. He has performed all kinds of healings throughout the Bible and then some. Sometimes He did so on His own initiative. Sometimes He waited to do so on the request of people. In this week's message we find that Naaman's healing was dependent on his obedience, but his obedience was not dependent on his understanding. Just as God has shown He can heal bodies, His desire is to heal sinful, broken hearts. Only God can truly heal bodies. Only God can heal sin.Do you have prayer requests? Parents and grandparents have long known from experience just how much a baby changes things when they enter their lives. Habits, dreams, activities, lifestyles, etc. all get transformed into something different. They challenge the status quo of our lives. Sometimes they even reveal the cracks in our lives. The baby Ruth and Boaz had not only changed their lives, but the descendant to come would be the baby who changed everything. His birth would bring hope, life and light into a darkened and desperate world.Do you have prayer requests? There are two primary tests of a person's character: How cheaply can they be “bought” and how much are they “willing to pay?” The first is the issue of integrity and character, what it would take for a person to betray their values and beliefs. The second is an issue of unselfishness as it regards what lengths they would go to in order to do what's right, even and especially when there is nothing in it for them. In today's next-to-last episode of our Ruth series, we will meet two men, both of whom will be tested by both of these tests. One will pass. One will fail. How do you do when it comes to these tests? What is your price, and how much would you pay to simply do what's right? It's not an easy test, is it?Do you have prayer requests? As we shift into chapter 2 of Ruth, we meet Boaz, who, for all intents and purposes, is the hero of this story. In meeting Boaz, though, we will realize that it is not him, but God, who is the hero, as God is the one who has always been in the business of providing for his people. That certainly means something special for Ruth and her situation, but what about us? This week, Shane walks through the first 15 verses of chapter 2 and reminds us that God has been in the business of providing for his people, and that still rings true today.
Every single day we make a thousand decisions. While most of them are inconsequential, some of them can literally chart the course of our entire futures. It's a mystery how a sovereign God can still allow his subjects to make decisions that have eternal impact. It would not suit Him to make us merely puppets; He loves us too much for that. In our message today, a young gentile woman will make a decision to leave kin and country, all for the sake of an older woman she loves and a God she barely knows. Her decision will become part of the tapestry into which God will one day weave the birth of His very son.Do you have prayer requests? There are a lot of stories in the Bible that document our human tendency to run away from God. Some of the biggest names in the Bible have that very chapter in their stories. And so do we. In today's story, we step into the first verses of the Book of Ruth, and we will find a damaged family at the end of themselves. By the time the story ends today, we will have walked with them through an “about face” as Naomi and Ruth turn their hearts and their faces back toward God, God's people, and God's perfect plan of deliverance. God will never “drag us home.” But if we've wandered, we can know that He's already longing for us, eager to welcome us when our hearts are ready for His open arms.Do you have prayer requests? Today we step into a new series that will take us into the fall. After months of murder, mayhem and chaos in the Book of Judges, we step just one book forward in the Old Testament, and we find a refreshing means to “wash off the dirt” of Judges. This sweet little book will explain the ancestry of King David (and ultimately a much greater King of the same dynasty) and it will show us the beautiful providence of God even when and if we may be bitter toward Him. It tells us God is fully aware of and concerned with the smallest details of our lives—and in those details He is crafting both small and large redemption stories, including our own. God is always at work, even (and maybe especially) when we cannot see His hands. We invite you to join us for our journey into the Book of Ruth, and today we share an overview to get started.
Many people are unaware of the fact that the idea of work and a “work ethic” are woven into the Bible from the earliest pages of scripture. Long before the fall, humans were given a job to do, tending the garden, tending paradise, so to speak. With the fall work became undoubtedly harder, but in no way a punishment in and of itself. From the biblical perspective, work is always a gift, always a blessing, always a responsibility. Today, this Labor Day weekend, we will be taking a look at this whole idea of “work.” So grab your boots… let's get going!Do you have prayer requests? In today's final message of the Broken Saviors series, we walk through what might well be the most disturbing and ugly chapters in the entire Bible. There's probably a good reason why almost nobody preaches about these chapters, and almost no one can spend much time reading them! But read them we must! And pay attention, we must—because they are true-to-life, unvarnished pictures of exactly what happens to a leaderless nation where the only moral code is “whatever seemed right in their own eyes.” This would all be less disturbing if it did not look so much like today's world, today's news, and in increasing ways—today's America and even today's church. If nothing else, these bitter chapters remind us of the absolute depravity of the human condition, and our utter need for the only true savior who can change and redeem any of it. As we embrace our own dark, sinful natures, we are made more desperate to embrace His merciful salvation.Do you have prayer requests?Get in touch directly with the team at WACC using thislink: https://wacconline.org/prayer-requestWe look forward to hearing from you! Everybody—absolutely everybody—has a god. From the most devout follower of the Lord, to the most determined atheist—everybody has a god. Trouble is, only One is real, true, powerful. The rest are mere counterfeits—broken, damaged, inadequate and ultimately incredibly disappointing. In our story today a man named Micah tries to create some gods made in his own image. It is a classic picture of ancient idolatry, and the gods he has made will soon abandon him. But Micah's gods are no less tenuous than our own: pride, money, sex, power, possessions, pleasures, media, games, house, relationships-- even wrong theology and misguided worship--can find us bowing to gods who cannot save us and will leave us alone and desolately empty. This is a cautionary tale.Do you have prayer requests?Get in touch directly with the team at WACC using thislink: https://wacconline.org/prayer-requestWe look forward to hearing from you! Time and time again Samson has shown his propensity for his physical strength and moral weakness. This part of Samson's life will show that his strength will become his weakness. As I read the accounts of Samson as an adult I see the parts that didn't get brought up when I was a kid. These make me scratch my head quite a bit. Also, when I was younger life seemed more innocent. Now that I am older I see the harsher realities of life and the brokenness surrounding them. While there are lots of characters in the Bible we can identify ourselves with, if we are honest with ourselves, none come closer to the truth of who we are and how we act than Gideon. Living in the tension of who we are and who we are called to be takes wisdom and a considerable amount of faith. Perhaps Gideon's example will teach us what not to do as we try and grow into what God has called us to. Do you have prayer requests? Do you ever feel like there is nothing one person can do to make a positive difference in the battle against evil in this world? Does it seem that every day brings chaos more than control, and storms increasingly threaten peace? Into just such a time came a woman named Deborah, who is remembered as a Judge of Israel. At just the right time, God raised her up to decisively change “the way things were.” In our lesson today we meet two “wonder women” and one courageous man, all of whom by God's strength won a decisive battle against evil. Main themes: God wins! Yielded lives make a difference. Boldness and courage instead of fear. Saying “yes” to God's call and opportunity; people serve but God gets the glory; Evil will not win out in the end.Do you have prayer requests? And so it begins . . . The Israelites found themselves in a sin cycle that continued to repeat for centuries. Each time the Lord raised up a deliverer after they cried out to Him. Judges 3 begins the cycle that would perpetuate itself. Their story is our story. Same old story - just different characters. The difference is that Jesus is the only one who can truly deliver us from sin and its eternal consequences. Do you have prayer requests? In our second message introducing the Book of Judges, we will see just how fast the faith of a nation can go from a vibrant dependency to a forgotten fable. In only one generation, Israel manages to turn away from the God who led them across the wilderness and gave them a promised land, to become a nation “prostituting themselves” and sleeping with just about any god who came along. This sad story is a cautionary tale for every generation, as we learn about the cycle of rebellion, punishment and deliverance in this story. We also will learn more about God's incredible mercy and grace, whose love shines through in spite of every human failing.Do you have prayer requests? When it comes to choosing a God—who we will serve—humans have a pretty lousy track record. Instead of logically choosing the one true God who made us and loves us and saves us and provides for us and cares about every little detail in our lives, we choose one or more of any number of gods who can't do any of those things. And we become their slaves as they increasingly own us. In today's series opener we lay some groundwork for our study of the book of Judges. And in the very first chapter we begin to see the very early symptoms of a heart problem that will prove Israel's ultimate undoing. And we learn about the dangers of half-hearted obedience.Do you have prayer requests?
