“It's not the years, honey. It's the mileage."Back after a mini hiatus due to film work commitments, Anders & Adam Holmes are back with a new trilogies episode! On this episode, the Holmes Brothers head on a globe trotting exploration into the unknown and search for the ethereal mysteries of the world. This episode they look at the first three Indiana Jones films starring Harrison Ford as the famous archaeologist and part time teacher. They discuss and analyse the three films (Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Temple of Doom & The Last Crusade), their impact on action-adventure cinema and also the films notable flaws in regards to its portrayal of foreign cultures and people. An aspect of the film that has probably not aged very well, yet the films are still enjoyable in our opinion. Temple Of Doom not so much... but they get to that.We hope you like this episode and stay tuned for more.Be sure to check out our Monument Valley Film on our YouTube Channel, the famous location is featured briefly in one of the films.Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen in the western The Outlaws which is a available to watch in the US, Finland & the UK on Amazon and Apple TV for example. “Doom” isn't just describing a Temple here, folks - it's kind of the overarching vibe of this film! George Lucas is going through a bitter divorce. Steven Spielberg is dealing with PTSD from Twilight Zone: The Movie. Harrison Ford is suffering from a back injury from falling off an elephant or something. Kate Capshaw is there. A true cloud of doom hanging over this movie! Fortunately for you all, it's only great vibes for us and Olivia Craighead *podcasting* about Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. It's the return of the “George Lucas got cucked by the stained glass man” lore, of course we're gonna have a blast. David Dastmalchian is one of our best character actors (LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL, THE DARK KNIGHT, DUNE, OPPENHEIMER, THE SUICIDE SQUAD) and now he's joining Vespe and JRT to talk about the controversial INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM. Our time with Dave was limited, so we run through this movie at a breakneck pace, much like the back half of the film itself, talk about its place among the other Indiana Jones films, why we loved it so much growing up, and why it remains a favorite entry into the franchise despite its not so stellar reputation. Okay, this week I once again return to the SpielbergPod archives and to three episodes recorded back in 2015/2016. And these cover 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' (which I covered with Jake), 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom' (which I discussed with Paul) and 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' (which Kieran and I talked about). So obviously, these were recorded many, many years ago (before 'Dial of Destiny' was even a glint in James Mangold's eye) but there's still some absolute gold here. And some impressions which, while were genuinely done out of love for these films and these characters, haven't aged well. Soz.
If I may quote Cheech Marin from GHOSTBUSTERS II, “Better late than never!”

God's wrath and justice - not soft-sounding words to our ears. Not words or verses we put on our coffee cups or our mantles. But, these attributes of God are deeply rooted in His character & actions. Let's understand how God's justice & wrath inform how we think about God's plans, our worship & our witness.
Now with auto-aim!
We have for you all to witness, a MEGA summary of why the INDIANA JONES saga has been able to successfully merge multiple genres, ancient evils of the world & quotable characters into one HUGE package. Even if it never was your fancy, we at least have some amusing commentary on franchises of the past and present & what adventure actually is for an archeologist. Why does TEMPLE OF DOOM appeal to so many non-Horror movie fans? Why does LAST CRUSADE appeal as a buddy movie despite some soapy plot inserts? Why did DIAL OF DESTINY come out so long afterwards despite packing 3 explosive theme park ride equivalents into 2.5 hours? Altogether, you'll get an amusing way in which we rank each film, videogame, book, comic & even the show. See which one gets a boulder as a 5 star rating and which one gets fed to the snake pit! If you're director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas, and you have been tasked with developing a sequel to one of the most beloved and highest grossing action adventures (Raiders of the Lost Ark) of all time, what do you do for a follow-up? Well in this case, you go broader, sillier, and DEFINITELY creepier! :o And apparently, you piss off millions of parents who were ok taking their children to see faces melting off on-screen for the previous one but draw the line at seeing some one rip the beating heart out of a man's chest! :o What resulted was the PG-13 rating and one of the highest grossing blockbusters of the '80's.....which was also savagely criticized for its high levels of violence and (somewhat justifiably) the cultural insensitivity of several of its characters and its overall setting. And one HELL of a ride featuring several memorable action set pieces and at least ONE beloved side character (Short Round played by future Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan). So on the verge of its 40th anniversary, how does this movie hold up? Let's find out as Harrison Ford is back as the titular hero along with several new cast-members including Amrish Puri, Roshan Seth, and Kate Capshaw. https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom carved its niche as a riveting piece of film history, captivating audiences with its daring escapades and dark undertones. Released in 1984, this sequel to the iconic Raiders of the Lost Ark delves deeper into the thrilling world of archaeology and myth, transporting viewers from the vibrant streets of Shanghai to the heart of India. What sets this film apart? It might be its audacious blend of supernatural elements, perilous adventures, and the charismatic yet fallible hero, Indiana Jones, played with unparalleled zest by Harrison Ford. Or perhaps it's the film's ability to balance darkness with moments of humor and heart that keeps it enduringly beloved. The film distinguishes itself by pushing the boundaries of the adventure genre while calling back to older films, combining Spielberg's directorial brilliance with George Lucas's storytelling prowess. This concoction of mysticism, edge-of-your-seat action, and the exploration of darker themes gives the film a unique place in cinema history, cementing its status as a standout of mid-80s cinema that continues to enchant viewers decades after its release. In this episode, we dive deep into the heart of darkness. Beyond my own fondness for the film and its impact on the genre, we'll explore what makes Temple of Doom a cinematic experience worth revisiting. I'll dissect the collaboration between Spielberg and Lucas, how they crafted a film that not only expanded the Indiana Jones universe but also took a path that set it apart from its predecessors and successors alike. Moreover, the mesmerizing score by John Williams added layers of depth to the movie's immersive experience, transporting audiences to an exotic and perilous world. The challenges Indiana Jones faces, from confronting cult leaders to rescuing enslaved children, present a gripping tale of heroism and adventure, all set to the perfect music. So, whether you're a long-time fan who revels in Indiana Jones's thrilling escapades or new to the films, this episode promises an insightful journey into the darkest chapter of Indy's adventures.
