Recorded on the front lawn of the BC Legislature in Victoria, we discuss Mr. McCay's background and previous experience in seeking to restore biblical morality at the municipal, provincial and federal levels. fWotD Episode 2880: Gertie the Dinosaur Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 24 March 2025 is Gertie the Dinosaur.Gertie the Dinosaur is a 1914 animated short film by American cartoonist and animator Winsor McCay. It is the first animated film to feature a dinosaur. McCay initially presented the film before live audiences as an interactive part of his vaudeville act; the frisky, childlike Gertie performed tricks at her master's command. McCay's employer William Randolph Hearst curtailed his vaudeville activities, prompting McCay to add a live-action introductory sequence to the film for its theatrical release, which was renamed Winsor McCay, the Famous Cartoonist, and Gertie. McCay abandoned a sequel, Gertie on Tour (c. 1921), after producing about a minute of footage.Although Gertie is popularly thought to be the earliest animated film, McCay had previously made Little Nemo (1911) and How a Mosquito Operates (1912). The American J. Stuart Blackton and the French Émile Cohl had experimented with animation even earlier. Gertie being a character with an appealing personality distinguished McCay's film from these earlier "trick films". Gertie was the first film to employ several animation techniques, like keyframes, registration marks, tracing paper, the Mutoscope action viewer, and animation loops. It influenced the next generation of animators, including the Fleischer brothers, Otto Messmer, Paul Terry, Walter Lantz, and Walt Disney. John Randolph Bray unsuccessfully tried to patent many of McCay's animation techniques and is said to have been behind a plagiarized version of Gertie that appeared a year or two after the original. Gertie is the best preserved of McCay's films—some of which have been lost or survive only in fragments—and has been preserved in the U. S. Library of Congress' National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" since 1991.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:47 UTC on Monday, 24 March 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Gertie the Dinosaur on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Olivia.

Kat McCay Stanley discussed her extensive restaurant ventures, including the recent rebranding of Holy Mackerel in Prince George County, Virginia, to The Salty Siren, which offers a seafood-heavy menu. "When Holy Mackerel hit my radar, there was no turning back. The potential there, the view, the building... So I thought, 'Is this crazy? This is pretty crazy,'" she said about her plan to revamp the restaurant along the James River near the Benjamin Harrison Memorial Bridge. "But I also knew in the back of my mind that if I was willing to chase that craziness, I knew the absolute most dynamite person who would be interested in chasing it with me. So I actually have a 50% business partner there, by the name of Jessica Pilout, and she is the other half of The Salty Siren." McCay Stanley also owns Old Towne's Alibi, a Petersburg dive bar known for its community involvement and zero staff turnover in three years. During her Eat It, Virginia interview, McCay Stanley highlighted her community's efforts after Hurricane Helene, organizing multiple relief trips with trailers and trucks filled with supplies to both North Carolina and Virginia communities impacted by the storm. She emphasized the ongoing need for support in affected area and suggested donating to Covenant Fellowship in Bristol. A few years ago, we found a dearth of information about LGBTQ+ leaders in print. So did Layla McCay, psychiatrist, founder of the Centre for Urban Design and Mental Health, and author of Breaking The Rainbow Ceiling. Not only did she uncover hidden barriers, but also some surprising leadership strengths that came from the journeys of her contributors. In this episode we glimpse into Layla's personal journey and explore the LGBTQ+ leadership discoveries in her book.

What is the Rainbow Ceiling, and why does it matter? On this episode, I'm speaking to the author of a new book that explains the significance and the ways we can help to remove it. A rainbow ceiling is similar to a glass ceiling, a metaphor for the various structural barriers that hold down women or minority groups as they try to climb the career ladder and prevent them from reaching top jobs—but applied to LGBTQ+ people. It's a rainbow partly because it symbolises LGBTQ+ people but also because the concept of the arc of a rainbow suggests that different people are affected in different ways. If, like me, you're straight, you might not ever have given much thought to what it's like to be LGBTQ+ and why those who are can find life more difficult. My guest, Dr Layla McCay, is the author of a brand new book called ‘Breaking the Rainbow Ceiling: How LGBTQ+ people can thrive and succeed at work' As you'll hear, although this is ostensibly a book to help LGBTQ+ people, it's also incredibly insightful for everyone else. That is why I wanted to get Layla onto the show. In reading it, I had some revelations: I recognised that I didn't really understand some of the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ people. I figured that if that applied to me, it might apply to others as well. But my revelations went further than a lack of understanding. I also came to realise that I had often inadvertently either helped to foster a work environment that wasn't as inclusive as it could have been or not done simple things that I could have done to make it. I think inclusion is important, not just because it's the right thing to do but also because by excluding people, we're not getting the best out of everyone or the cognitive diversity we really need.TopicsOn the show, we explore:What the Rainbow Ceiling is and how it manifests itself; How everyday business practices, such as business travel, pose unique challenges and discomfort for LGBTQ+ professionals; Why many LGBTQ+ people are forced to go ‘back into the closet' at work, and what impact that has;The challenges of ‘coming out' at work; How policies can unintentionally exclude LGBTQ+ people, and what we can do to make them more inclusive; The importance of visible symbols of support; the transformative power of LGBTQ+ visibility in leadership; And much, much more. Only God can heal miraculously. He has performed all kinds of healings throughout the Bible and then some. Sometimes He did so on His own initiative. Sometimes He waited to do so on the request of people. In this week's message we find that Naaman's healing was dependent on his obedience, but his obedience was not dependent on his understanding. Just as God has shown He can heal bodies, His desire is to heal sinful, broken hearts. Only God can truly heal bodies. Only God can heal sin.Do you have prayer requests? Parents and grandparents have long known from experience just how much a baby changes things when they enter their lives. Habits, dreams, activities, lifestyles, etc. all get transformed into something different. They challenge the status quo of our lives. Sometimes they even reveal the cracks in our lives. A podcast episode sponsored by Denman Professional In today's podcast we are sitting down for a conversation with Marcus McCay, a design engineer at Denman International. Marcus is part of the team responsible for the design and development of the iconic Denman brushes that many of us use daily in our salons and barbers. Marcus is to reveal the secrets behind the iconic Denman brushes. We discover the design purpose and the art of creating brushes that cater to different hair types, hair care, and styling needs. Plus we gain insights into the importance of tension in styling and why customer feedback matters to the keeping Denman ahead of the competition. We also touch on the challenges of staying relevant to fashion trends and finding inspiration from other industries. What about the sustainability aspect of the Denman? Specifically addressing the use of plastics, Marcus will explain why Denman brushes are designed to be durable and responsibly disposed of at the end of their lifespan, embracing the concept of "less is more" by striving to use less polymer in their manufacturing process. As Marcus says, "Designing for disassembly is also a key consideration, ensuring the brushes can be easily cleaned and maintained." And for all you design geeks, we cover why ergonomics and anthropometrics play a crucial role in ensuring the brushes feel comfortable in the hand. If you're passionate about the styling tools that you use and want to gain a deeper understanding of Denman brushes design and manufacturing, and their commitment to sustainability, then this episode provides a fascinating look into it. We talk about adoption, about having kids and about losing our mothers, who both died in the past three years.
Can you really create balance with only changing your mindset? For most working moms, it feels like a lot more needs to shift other than your thoughts, but for my client Meredith, a mindset shift was what really made a difference. If you've listened to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast this year, the theme of the recently concluded whitetail season has been along the lines of: "It's just been tough", or "We just weren't seeing much of a rut this year". That seems to be the case country wide. This week we're joined by two fan favorites, veteran Alabama deer killers Jamie McCay and Michael Perry. It's easy to make excuses for a bad season, but what separates the killers from the crowd is the willingness to adjust their strategy. If you know Michael or have heard his tactics, he puts a lot into hunting creek crossings. You'd likely know Jamie McCay for his talks on hunting bluff gaps. So what do these guys do when those tactics aren't working? You'll hear this and more in this week's episode! Check out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant outdoor content!
