Country singer and Voice contestant, Emily Ann Roberts joins Elaina on Breaking Thru! "When I was in the 6th grade, I made my first public performance at my church singing “Blessings” by Laura Story. Later that year, my friend and I auditioned for our middle school talent show and though we tried our best, we didn’t make it in the competition. I decided to ask the teacher what I could improve on so I could have a better chance of making it the next year. My teacher said, “Maybe if you would’ve played an instrument you would’ve made it in the Talent show.” I went home that same night, got an old guitar out of the closet, and started playing it every day. My dad would take me to music stores on the weekend and I would sit and watch and learn from other players. A day didn’t go by that I didn’t pick up my guitar at least once. I fell in love with playing and after one year, I auditioned again for the talent show and I won." - Emily Visit Emily's official webpage: https://www.emilyannroberts.com Check out "live" music performances on Nash Country Daily:https://bit.ly/2YhLaXK https://www.youtube.com/user/CountryWeekly/videos Follow Elaina on Twitter:https://twitter.com/elainadsmith Elaina on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/elainadsmith

I can't believe we've come to the finale episode of Season 1. I'm so excited about what we've accomplished since launching this podcast in June—and that includes YOU listening, watching and reading this. We will definitely keep things going in 2019, but we have the perfect way to wrap things up in 2018. Our guest this week is Cam, a woman who has been at the top of my guest list since starting the show. Cam has been a huge inspiration to me, and a wonderful friend and supporter of the show. You'll hear more specifics when you listen to this episode. It is a great one! Cam did not hold back, which is one of the reasons I love her. I hope you enjoy, and thank you for the best experience during Season 1 of Women Want to Hear Women. I can't believe Season 1 of Women Want to Hear Women is winding down. Since launching in June, we have completed 23 amazing episodes featuring some of the genre's biggest names, rising stars and up-and-comers. Before we close Season 1 next week with a sit-down interview with Cam—I'm so excited—I thought it would be fun to reflect on some of this season's episodes, so I brought in my partner in crime, Jim Casey, editor in chief of Nash Country Daily, who helped me launch the podcast six months ago. I can't even begin to thank all of my guests and the people behind the scenes who have made this podcast become a reality. But I will try. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Danielle Bradbery has been in the public eye since winning The Voice as a 16-year-old in 2013. But winning a reality talent competition doesn't immediately translate to superstardom. Like most reality show winners, Danielle has had to work tirelessly to prove herself—and find herself as an artist. In our sit-down interview this week, Danielle talks about her time on The Voice, growing up in the public eye, finding her confidence, releasing her recent album, I Don't Believe We've Met, and so much more—including her thoughts on how to get more women on country radio. Plus, Danielle covers Carrie Underwood's "So Small" and performs her recent single, "Worth It." Hope you enjoy! Leah Turner has had such an interesting career since moving from California to Nashville in 2012. She is a true example of how finicky the country music industry can be—but her hard work and talent have not gone unnoticed. While Leah has had many challenges, she's also had many victories, including releasing her self-titled EP and charting two singles. Leah is one of the hardest working women in Nashville, and I'm thrilled we were able to sit down and chat. You'll also find out how Leah originally sparked my first idea for this podcast. Enjoy! Since launching Women Want to Hear Women in June, RaeLynn has been one of the show's biggest supporters. Every time I've bumped into her around town, we've talked about finding enough time for her to stop by the podcast to share her story and insight. Thankfully, we were finally able to make it happen—she's a busy and successful woman! Texas native RaeLynn caught our ear as a 17-year-old when she was on The Voice in 2012. Since then, she has moved to Nashville, released her debut album, toured with a number of A-list artists, gotten married and so much more. Some of her biggest supporters include Blake Shelton and Florida Georgia Line, so she's definitely in good hands. But why aren't some of her singles gaining more traction at country radio? We get into that and a lot more. Hope you enjoy! Podcast Participants: RaeLynn Elaina Smith, host of Women Want to Hear Women Videos: RaeLynn talks about being a military wife. As of today, there is only one woman in the Top 30 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart: Maren Morris, whose single “Rich” is currently No. 5. Maren stopped by Women Want to Hear Women this week and delivered an open and honest dialogue about the current state of women in the country industry, differences in the pop world, how to correct some of the problems and much more. “I feel conflicted, because I worked so hard to put this album [Hero] out with songs that I dearly care about, and it’s sad because I want to celebrate the fact that my song is in the Top 5, but I also feel like I can’t fully celebrate because I am the only woman in the Top 30,” said Maren to Elaina. “It feels like a catch 22 sometimes because I feel ungrateful when I bring attention to the fact there is such a lack of female representation at radio right now. But I’m also thankful, so I do feel on the fence about it because I’m obviously so gracious that radio is playing this and fans are loving this song, but at the same time I want to be able to celebrate my friends that are putting out incredible music that aren’t even getting a single spin. It’s a weird spot to be in. I want to inspire and help change the landscape and get more female voices heard, but it’s definitely concerning to look at the chart today and literally be the only one that’s a woman on it.” You asked for Maren, and we’re so thrilled we could make it happen—and we’re thankful Maren continues to demonstrate the courage to speak her mind like a true leader and role model. Hope you enjoy! Show Participants: Maren Morris Elaina Smith, host of Women Want to Hear Women Videos: Maren discusses being the only female in the Top 30 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart. On this week's podcast, we're featuring a young woman you are going to fall in love with: Logan Brill. One of the great byproducts of this podcast is that it has allowed me to discover even more women in country music—Logan is a perfect example. She makes me so excited about the future of the genre and the work ethic of women in this industry. Logan has worked hard to get to where she is today, drawing inspiration from strong women like her mom and sister. And her hard work has been paying off, as evidenced by Logan opening gigs for a number of artists, including Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam, Gary Alan, Lee Brice, The Band Perry and more. We talk about Logan's winding road, where she's headed and so much more. Hope you guys enjoy! A few weeks ago I mentioned that I really wanted to start involving more men into the Women Want to Hear Women conversation, because the only way to change the conversation is by working together. I thought the perfect guests would be the men and women of Delta Rae. The group, composed of two women and four men, released a female empowerment anthem on Oct. 19 called "Hands Dirty." In a bit of a plot twist, band member Ian Hölljes was the initial writer of the song before his sister Brittany stepped in to work with him on it. This band is an example of how men and women can work together to better champion the WWTHW movement. I absolutely love this conversation, and I hope you do too! Plus, wait until you hear Delta Rae cover Cam's "Diane." It will blow you away. Rachel Wammack was the first new artist I was introduced to this year—and she's a big reason I launched the Women Want to Hear Women podcast. After a random "Asian-fusion" dinner with her at the ACM Awards in April, I fell in love with her personality before I heard her sing. I was hoping she was as talented in the music arena as she was fun . . . and I was NOT disappointed when I heard her debut single, “Damage.” Rachel's career is just getting started, but I can already tell she has star power. Since 2016, Kalie has released three EPs, and as one of the co-founders of the all-female, singer-songwriter collective Song Suffragettes, the talented 24-year-old has been an incredible champion for women, not only in country music, but in all genres. The group's 2018 song, "Times Up," which Kalie co-wrote, addresses issues of gender inequality and sexual misconduct in relation to the #MeToo movement. When I launched the Women Want to Hear Women podcast with Nash Country Daily on June 15, I had no idea how far this campaign would come in less than three months. After nine amazing episodes, I'm excited to tell you that we now have a platform on the Westwood One Podcast Network—and our first episode on the network features none other than Carrie Underwood, one of the most popular and powerful artists in country music. Carrie has always championed women. She is one of the people who inspired me to create this podcast to share women’s stories. When Carrie agreed to be my first guest for the national launch on Westwood One, I couldn’t wait for her to share her experiences, outlook and insight. Carrie did NOT disappoint. She was incredibly open and passionate about the "Women Want to Hear Women" message. We covered a lot of ground in this interview, from the lack of opportunities for females on country radio and how to handle haters on social media to women being pitted against each other and how to be the BOSS. I encourage you to listen to every word, because what Carrie has to say is important. Let’s keep this conversation going. Enjoy! A popular local adage is that Nashville is a "10-year town," suggesting it takes an artist a decade to finally make it "big." Sarah Darling has been in Music City for almost a decade—singing, writing, releasing music and winning over new fans with each performance. Is it finally Sarah's time? In this week's WWTHW conversation, I talk with Sarah about her patience, journey, obstacles and successes, including building a fan base in Europe. This was my first time meeting Sarah, and if it is your first time too, I think you're going to be just as happy as I was. Not only is Stephanie Quayle one of my favorite human beings, but she is also an incredible—and underrated—artist. If you aren't familiar with Stephanie's music, be sure to check out our WWTHW Playlist, because Stephanie kicks some serious booty. I sincerely admire Stephanie's art and the fact that she is a complete BOSS LADY! In this week's sit-down, we have a lot of fun in the studio as Stephanie offers some astute advice and provides keen insight for females in the industry. Hope you enjoy! Clare Dunn has been one of my favorite artists since releasing singles "Move On" and "Tuxedo" a few years ago. If you're not familiar with her name, I suggest you catch her live show. She is one of the most electric performers I've EVER seen. This week, I sat down with Clare to talk about what it's like being a woman in the male-dominated country genre, patience, dogs, dancing, alter egos and more. Clare also shared some great advice for aspiring artists entering the country music industry. In addition, Clare helps me curate this week's WWTHW playlist and she "Plays It Forward" with a cover of "Make You Feel My Love" and a performance of her new single, "More." I hope you enjoy the show. We've been getting some really unique perspectives from female artists since launching Women Want to Hear Women—and this week's profile is extra special: 14-year-old Tegan Marie. Tegan is the youngest artist to be signed to a major country label since Tanya Tucker in 1972. Obviously, her experience as a woman in country music has been VERY different from the ladies we've profiled so far. In our sit-down interview, Tegan and I talk about what it's like being in the spotlight at such a young age, social media, bullies, her music—including new single, "I Know How to Make a Boy Cry"—and, of course, we find out what she thinks about the phrase that kicked off this entire series: "women DON'T want to hear women." Tegan also helps me curate this week's WWTHW playlist and she "Plays It Forward" with a cover of LeAnn Rimes' "Blue" and a performance of her new single. Listening to Tegan will put a smile on your face. Hope you enjoy. Need a refresher what #WomenWantToHearWomen is all about? Not all female voices in country music come from solo artists. Little Big Town’s four-pronged power comes in equal measures from both Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman as well as Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet. Lady Antebellum soars with the combination of Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood. Maddie Marlow and Tae Dye of Maddie & Tae are best friends, a sound that is almost palpable in their harmonies. In this week’s episode, I sit down with Thompson Square’s Shawna Thompson, who teamed with her husband, Keifer, to form their award-winning duo almost a decade ago (they’ve been married for 18 years). I wanted to find out if Shawna’s experience as a woman in country music has been different since she’s had her guy by her side. We find that out and so much more as we feature Shawna during this week’s Women Want to Hear Women Podcast. We even get some perspective from her husband. I hope you enjoy the podcast, and be sure to check out the videos of Thompson Square as they “Play It Forward” with a cover of Faith Hill’s “It Matters to Me,” as well as their new song, “Breakers.” Shawna also helps me curate this week’s WWTHW playlist. Need a refresher on what #WomenWantToHearWomen is all about? We definitely have a long list of powerful and talented women to shine the spotlight on, so let’s get things rolling. The inaugural #WomenWantToHearWomen feature is . . . Kacey Musgraves. Not only did I get a BUNCH of tweets about Kacey, but she also happens to be one of my personal favorites. Honestly, she’s the first artist who sparked my interest regarding women not being played on country radio—and that was back in 2013. I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that this talented, unique, SUPER country woman wasn’t getting the love she deserved. Kacey is an amazing songwriter and singer. She’s a voice of our generation. Her albums have perfectly encapsulated where my friends and I are—and have been—in our lives. From love-and-acceptance anthems like “Follow Your Arrow” to everyday-problem songs like “Lonely Weekend,” Kacey can translate any thought into a country BOP! While you might not hear much of Kacey’s music on country radio nowadays, that doesn’t mean she’s going unnoticed. Some of the biggest stars in the world have professed their love for her, including her current tour mate, Harry Styles. I caught up with Kacey to find out how her tour with Harry is going and to talk about the recent trend of female country stars opening up for male popstars.
