Marty Stuart rocked the country radio in the early 90s and albums that blended Steve Earle-esque country rock with badass guitar playing and a nod to traditional country. In this episode, we take a listen to the trajectory of Marty's music. Traditional country to modern country to where his music lives now: as rock music. Did that really happen? Stuart has more than 20 studio albums, has charted more than 30 times on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, won five Grammy Awards, and is an engaged member of the Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Hall of Fame. It is a fascinating truckload of music. Let's go. Email the show: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com website: www.rockpopandroll.com NOTES: The Fabulous Superlatives, Marty Stuart's band since 2002, includes Stuart on guitar and mandolin, Kenny Vaughan on guitar, and Harry Stinson on drums, and from 2002 until 2008, Brian Glenn on bass. From 2008 until 2015, Paul Martin was on bass. In 2015, Chris Scruggs replaced Paul Martin on bass, and also played steel guitar. Every member sings. Stuart's guitars also include "Clarence", a two-tone Fender Telecaster, once owned by Clarence White. This instrument is the original B-Bender guitar, built and designed by White and Gene Parsons (Byrds) in 1967, to allow the guitarist to manually raise the guitar's 'B' string one whole step to play in a style similar to a pedal steel guitar. Stuart bought the guitar in 1980 from White's widow. Mavis Staples of the Staple Singers gave one of her father "Pops" Staples' guitars to Marty Stuart after Pop's death. "My father was Marty's godfather. My sisters and I took him in as our brother. He's the only one that I've heard who -- when he's playing guitar, sounds like Pop. He can play just like him."

This week, musicians born into powerful family musical traditions recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, commentary from some of these living legacies. Legacy is something handed down from the past. The tradition of folk music and culture is rooted in legacy. Musical legacies can exist in the form of songs, melodies, musical instruments, styles of playing, and sometimes even people. A musician born into a powerful family music tradition may find themselves a living connection to that legacy for thousands of fans. On this week's show, we feature some of these living legacies: Amy Helm; A.J. Croce; Carlene Carter; Dale Jett; and Thom Bresh. Amy Helm is an American singer-songwriter and daughter of The Band drummer Levon Helm and singer Libby Titus. She is a past member of the Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble Band and Ollabelle, as well as her own touring band. Born in Woodstock, New York, Amy spent her childhood between Woodstock, Los Angeles, and New York City. She attended Trinity High School where she studied jazz with Dr. Aaron Bell, while singing in bands, and playing in New York City clubs and bars. A lifelong musician and music-lover, Helm's parents guided her training and influences. She later became a founding member of the alt-country collective Ollabelle and served as a backing musician in her father's Midnight Ramble Band. Adrian James "A.J." Croce is an American singer-songwriter. He is the son of singer-songwriters Jim Croce and Ingrid Croce. A.J. Croce has been inextricably linked to a version of his own story by virtue of his name. He's experienced a lifetime of comparisons to a father he lost at age two, whose music bears little resemblance to his own output yet still serves as a reference point despite the years that have passed and the many iconic mentors who have stepped in to offer their counsel, creativity, and endorsement throughout his long career. Carlene Carter is an American country singer and songwriter. She is the daughter of June Carter of the famed Carter Family and her first husband, Carl Smith. She became the step-daughter of Johnny Cash. Between 1978 and the present, Carter has recorded twelve albums, primarily on major labels. In the same timespan, she has released more than twenty singles, including three No. 3-peaking hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Dale Jett is a proud bearer of the Carter Family musical legacy. Son of Jeanette Carter and grandson of A.P. and Sara Carter, Dale performs songs from the Carter Family song book with his group “Hello Stranger.” With his wife Teresa on bass, and Oscar Harris on auto harp, Dale keeps the music of his family tradition alive and relevant. Thom Bresh has led an incredible, multi-faceted life in the entertainment business. To start, his birth father is guitar royalty, Merle Travis. Thom was raised in California during the golden age of television and worked as a stuntman/actor during his youth. He went on to become one of the premier practitioners of his fathers “thumbpicking” style of guitar. Harnessing a quick wit and an equally quick set of ten fingers, there is nothing like a Thom Bresh performance. In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers an archival recording of country music legacy and our very own Mark Jones performing in the banjo style of his famous father Grandpa Jones the tune “Mountain Whippoorwill,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In this week's guest host segment, renowned traditional folk musician, writer, and step dancer Aubrey Atwater describes therapeutic music and her role as a musician in a pediatric hospital.

The hero's journey traces a main character who goes on an adventure, is victorious in a decisive crisis, and comes home changed or transformed. Country artist, philanthropist, veteran, and North Carolina native Rockie Lynne's life story is truly a hero's journey. From his humble beginnings of being left at the door of Barium Springs Home for Children, to touring the world, selling hundreds of thousands of records, and writing songs recorded by superstars, you can say Rockie's narrative is the stuff of American folklore. Rockie grew up in Statesville, North Carolina, and was adopted by a Southern Baptist family of limited means. He grew up on Statesville's dirt roads, and they led him to anthemic success in the entertainment world as a triple threat: a world-class songwriter, a captivating performer, and a diversely accomplished instrumentalist. Where I Belong deftly merges a musician's quest for authentic self-expression with a touching search for familial lineage. There's Rockie's all-consuming love of the guitar which spans picking out licks on a second hand record player to his post-Army dreams of becoming the next Eddie Van Halen. Incidentally, these finely-honed chops remain intact, and they are a staple of Rockie's music, dazzlingly displayed in his live-show duels with his fiddle player, Dirk Dowell. A profound chapter in Where I Belong is Rockie meeting his biological father, Clyde Holloway. The pair share a powerful moment when Clyde gifts Rockie with his prized Martin D35, a guitar that he had owned most of his adult life. “When he gave me that guitar, I felt a closeness to him that didn't exist before,” Rockie says. Clyde's guitar has since become an integral part of Rockie's artistry as a player and a composer because of the significance of its lineage. The newly-penned “My Father's Guitar,” a single from Love, out March 29th, commemorates this moving moment. After hundreds and hundreds of watering-hole one-nighters, Rockie got his big break being signed personally by then Universal Music Group CEO Doug Morris. He issued his self-titled solo debut in 2006, and landed three singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. After Universal South folded, Rockie, an accomplished engineer, producer, and owner of his own recording studio, Tone Studios in Statesville, pushed ahead releasing nine solo albums to date. Rockie has generously harnessed the expanse of his public platform in service of others. He is a veteran, having served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, and this legacy is close to Rockie's heart. He often performs for patriotic and military events, and his original songs are regularly licensed for use in conjunction with veteran and patriotic-themed programming. In 2004, Rockie co-founded the Tribute to the Troops motorcycle ride to raise funds and awareness for America's fallen soldiers and their families. Today, Rockie is back in Statesville where he has a stable and loving family and his own recording studio in which he nurtures local talent, and around town he's mythologized as an Elvis-like figure with his chiseled-face handsomeness, his down-to-earth charms, and his immense artistic gifts. Looking back on his journey, and through the process of making the documentary and connecting with his biological family for the first time, Rockie reflects: “I went from feeling unloved to knowing I'm loved, and that I've always been loved. I found my roots—I am somebody from somewhere.”https://www.rockielynne.com/Support the showThanks for listening for more information or to listen to other podcasts or watch YouTube videos click on this link >https://thetroutshow.com/

Tony Perkins with the Family Research Council said, “It is shocking to see Western countries -- the same ones we think of as free and open societies -- take authoritarian measures against Christians simply trying to live out their faith. Hostility toward Bible-believing Christians is clearly and steadily rising in the West.” Pro-lifer Nayib Bukele expected to win in El Salvador Nayib Bukele is expecting a landslide victory in his re-election bid for President of El Salvador. Preliminary results from Sunday's election show Bukele winning with 83% of the vote. His nearest rival got 7% of the vote. He faces criticism for his consecutive second term, which is banned in the country's constitution. However, favorable judges, voted in under his administration, approved the second term. Bukele is known for cracking down on gang members in El Salvador, dropping the homicide rate, and making the cryptocurrency Bitcoin legal tender. He also opposes the murder of unborn babies and faux homosexual marriage. Biden selectively punishes church vandalism The U.S. Department of Justice announced sentencing last week for a man who attempted to burn down the building of Community Church of Chesterland, Ohio. The arsonist was angered by the church's plans to host two drag events. It's a rare case of the Biden administration prosecuting vandalism of religious buildings. Most other cases involve attacks on the buildings of pro-life churches and organizations. There have been nearly 400 cases since the leak of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022. Tom McClusky with CatholicVote said, “The response from the Biden administration has been the equivalent of a shrug and a yawn.” Ecclesiastes 8:11 says, “Because the sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the children of man is fully set to do evil.” Murders decreased by 12% in America Vox reports that violent crime and homicide dropped significantly last year from a recent peak in 2020. Murders decreased by 12% in cities in 2023, according to the FBI. Some major cities were exceptions with none greater than Washington, D.C. The nation's capital had its deadliest year in over two decades in 2023. Violent crime rose by 40%. D.C. also saw its greatest shortage of police in five decades. However, Jeff Asher, a crime data analyst, noted that 2023 overall saw “one of the lowest rates of violent crime in the United States in more than 50 years.” Country musician Toby Keith died of cancer Country musician Toby Keith Covel died on February 5th at the age of 62 after losing his battle with stomach cancer, reports NBC News. The entertainer revealed his diagnosis in a June 2022 Instagram post, noting he "spent the last 6 months receiving chemo, radiation and surgery." He became known for his 2011 hit song, “Red Solo Cup,” which advocated drunkenness and debauchery. KEITH: “Red Solo cup, I fill you up/Let's have a party, let's have a party/I love you, red Solo cup/Proceed to party, proceed to party” In the video, Focus on the Family notes that Keith wanders around a house party in which everyone's drinking from red Solo cups. Virtually every woman in the video, it seems, is wearing a bikini or short shorts. By song's end, Keith has not only enumerated the joys of drinking from said cups, but also how women holding them are easier to hit on.” Proverbs 20:1 says, “Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.” Toby Keith charted 61 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, including 20 number one hits and 22 additional top 10 hits like “As Good As I Once Was” in 2011 and “Should've Been A Cowboy” in 1993. All told, he released 19 studio albums, 2 Christmas albums, and 5 compilation albums, totaling worldwide sales of over 40 million albums. On March 24, 2001, Keith's father, H.K. Covel, was killed in a car accident. That event and the September 11 attacks in 2001 prompted Keith to write the song "Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue," a song about his father's patriotism and faith in the United States, originally intended only for live shows. KEITH: “My daddy served in the Army Where he lost his right eye but he flew a flag out in our yard Until the day that he died He wanted my mother, my brother, my sister and me To grow up and live happy In the land of the free “Now this nation that I love has fallen under attack A mighty sucker punch came flyin' in from somewhere in the back Soon as we could see clearly Through our big black eye Man, we lit up your world Like the fourth of July “Hey Uncle Sam, put your name at the top of his list And the Statue of Liberty started shakin' her fist And the eagle will fly … It'll feels like the whole wide world is raining down on you Brought to you courtesy of the red, white, and blue.” Toby Keith performed at President Donald Trump's inauguration. Plants can talk with each other And finally, scientists believe that plants can actually communicate with each other. Scientists have caught this phenomenon of God's creation on camera for the first time. Business Insider reports, “When healthy plants received warning messages from damaged plants, they lit up like a light bulb, which the scientists recorded using a special microscope that detects certain chemicals as light. … It's like how your nose can detect invisible scents in the air, which your brain reads as information about the environment. … Plants, it turns out, are doing the same thing, sending mists of particles into the air to warn their neighbors of trouble.” Speaking of God's creation, Revelation 4:11 says, “Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they existed and were created.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Tuesday, February 7th in the year of our Lord 2024. Linda Ronstadt's fifth solo studio album would be her breakout one. Heart Like a Wheel is a folk/country/rock mixture of covers and originals, and was the last album Ronstadt released on the Capitol Records label after she had moved to Asylum records. It would reach the top of the Billboard 200, spend 51 weeks on the chart, and fuel Ronstadt's rise to the first "arena class" female rock star.Linda Maria Ronstadt is the third of four children born to a family of Mexican and German descent and a long history in Arizona. Her professional start is considered to be the folk rock trio called the Stone Poneys, who had a hit in 1968 with the song "Different Drum." Ronstadt is famous for touring in the early 70's with a backing band that included Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner - artists who would go on to form the Eagles. Her four earlier albums produced only moderate success before her fortune turned dramatically upward with "Heart Like a Wheel."While Ronstadt's style is often referred to as country rock, she called it "Mexican bluegrass" in 1968. Over time she would record songs in a variety of styles from rock to folk and country, including some Spanish language songs and even rock songs reimagined as lullabies. Her ability to cross genres contributed both to her success and her share of criticism from those expecting something different. Success did not always agree with her, as she felt she was encouraged to project a tough rock image that did not accurately reflect her true self. Linda Ronstadt was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, shortly after her retirement from music in 2011.Bruce presents this breakthrough country rock album in this week's podcast. I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love with You)This cover was originally written and recorded by Hank Williams back in 1951. It went to number 2 on the Billboard country singles chart back then. A bunch of people have covered this song, but Ronstadt's cover is the most successful, going to number 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and winning her a Grammy in 1976 for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. You're No GoodThe first single released from the album went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is a cover of a song written by Clint Ballard Jr. and first performed by Dee Dee Warwick in 1963. The success of this "glad to be broken up" song would set the template for Ronstadt over the next five years of doing remakes of classic rock and roll songs.Faithless LoveAn original recording rather than a cover, this deeper cut was written by J.D. Souther, who wrote or co-wrote songs for both Ronstadt and the Eagles. It would hit number 10 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart when Glen Campbell covered it in 1984. Willin'This song was first performed by Little Feat and was written by their front man, Lowell George. Ronstadt's cover was used in James Cameron's film "The Abyss" in 1989. Lowell wrote this song while he was a member of the Mothers of Invention. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Dance of the Reed Flutes (from the nature documentary "Animals Are Beautiful People")In addition to its frequent use in the Christmas ballet "The Nutcracker," this piece was also used in the nature documentary STAFF PICKS:Whatever Gets You Through the Night by John LennonLynch kicks off the staff picks with a song originally inspired by Lennon's habit of late night channel surfing. He caught the phrase from Reverend Ike, an evangelist on TV, and turned it into this song. It went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Lennon got Elton John to provide the vocal duet for this song, and in return Lennon appeared onstage with John during his Thanksgiving concert at Madison Square Garden - one of his last major live appearances.I Can Help by Billy SwanWayne brings us a song we all thought was performed by Ringo Starr. Billy Swan was better known as a country songwriter than a solo artist, but this single would be his sole number 1 hit. It is a particularly positive song, with a nice reprise at the end of the album cut.Must of Got Lost by the J. Geils Band Rob features an early hit from the J. Geils Band, reaching number 12 on the charts. It has a funky hook, and a grammatically incorrect title, with lyrics that explore why a relationship went wrong.Wishing You Were Here by ChicagoBruce closes out the staff picks with a song off the Chicago VI album. Chicago gets some assistance from the Beach Boys, who contribute to the backing vocals on this song about missing the one you love while on the road with a touring band. COMEDY TRACK:Wildwood Weed by Jim StaffordWe finish off with a story in song about that whacky tobackey in a country setting
#935 - Five O'Clock Somewhere - Don Rollins & Jim "Moose" Brown Interview Are you here? …. Just where are you? Whether you're in New York or Los Angeles, well, really anywhere in the world—five o'clock is synonymous with calling it a day and enjoying a cold beverage. Maybe your cold drink is the famous Hurricane cocktail made famous by Pat O'Brien's bar in New Orleans. We heard our friend Dave Hooser was hanging around in the French Quarter, but he didn't necessarily wait till five o'clock. He knew it was…five o'clock (pause) somewhere. Most of you know the song “It's Five O'Clock Somewhere” that was recorded and made famous by Alan Jackson and the late Jimmy Buffett. It became a very important song for Jimmy Buffett. “It's Five O'Clock Somewhere” remains Jimmy Buffett's only #1 hit. He performed it close to 600 times over the last 20 years. In fact, Jimmy sang it as a duet with Mac McAnally at his very last performance on July 2nd, 2023. Your host Paul Leslie had the honor and pleasure of interviewing Don Rollins and Jim “Moose” Brown, the two songwriters who wrote the hit “It's Five O'Clock Somewhere.” The interview took place in a recording studio in Nashville, Tennessee—years and years ago. We'll play it shortly. “It's Five O Clock Somewhere” written by Rollins & Brown catapulted Jimmy Buffett even more into the public spotlight and gave him lots of airplay on country radio. It spent 8 non-consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in the Summer of 2003. The song also won the CMA Award for Vocal Event of the Year as well as the Grammy for Best Country Song of 2003. It was also #17 on the US Hot 100 making it the most successful pop hit for both Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett. Billboard named “It's Five O'Clock Somewhere” as the Most Played Country Song in 2003. Right quick: The Paul Leslie Hour has been archiving and distributing interviews for more than 19 years. It's made possible in part by listeners and viewers like you. Give yourself and others the gift of stories, just go right here. I think it's time we played this interview with Don Rollins and Jim “Moose” Brown, two very talented songwriters, right here on The Paul Leslie Hour.

Defining a genre for the group War is a difficult process. There are elements of Latin, R&B, funk, soul, and rock mixed in. Some call it progressive soul. War came from Long Beach, California in 1969, and began as a backing band for Deacon Jones. The band was originally led by Eric Burden of the Animals and were known as Eric Burden and War for their first tow albums, then as War after Burden left the group. Their seventh studio album, Why Can't We Be Friends? would continue a tradition of successful albums for the band, going to number 8 on the US charts, number 1 on the R&B sharts, and two singles would be nominated for the Grammy awards in 1976.War had a large number of musicians, and much of their personnel rotated in and out of the group. For this album the group was Howard Scott on guitar, B.B. Dickerson on bass, Lonnie Jordan on organ, Papa Dee Allen on conga and bongos, Charles Miller on clarinet and sax, and Lee Oskar on harmonica. All members are also listed on percussion and vocals.War was a band with a purpose. The goal of the band from the beginning was to spread a message of brotherhood and harmony, and to speak out against racism, hunger, gangs, and crimes.Bruce brings us this funky fusion band for discussion.. Why Can't We Be Friends? The title track reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Each band member gets their own verse to sing. The title is sung 44 times. It was played in outer space during the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. Smash Mouth did a cover in 1998 as the second single from their debut album. HeartbeatThis is a deeper cut with a lot of funk. You could easily hear George Clinton and Parliament doing this piece. The lyrics are about not worrying about things, but being in the present. "Ain't no need a-worryin' about the future. Ain't no need a-worryin'."Don't Let No One Get You DownLeading off the album, this song is a piece of encouragement, letting the listener know they will always be lifted up by the singer. "Don't let no one get you down, cause if they do, if they do, I'll be around."Low RiderThe big hit off the album would become iconic over time. The song is about a car and a culture in Southern California. A low rider is a car modified with hydraulic lifts so the wheels can be lowered and make the car bounce. The band maintains that the references are not to drug culture, although the song did make it into a couple of Cheech and Chong movies.. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main Theme to the motion picture "Jaws"This movie was keeping everyone out of the water in the summer of 1975. STAFF PICKS:Welcome to My Nightmare by Alice CooperWayne starts off the staff picks with the title song from a concept album that chronicles a journey through the nightmares of a child named Steven. Cooper would later perform this song on "The Muppet Show." It peaked at number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100.Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While) by The Doobie BrothersRob brings us a cover from Motown. Holland-Dozier-Holland wrote this one, originally performed by Kim Weston in 1964. While the original version peaked at number 50 on the Billboard Hot 100, the Doobie Brothers version was more successful, peaking at number 11.Sister Golden Hair by America Brian features a track that went to number 1 on the charts. This is a relationship song according to Gerry Beckley, and it was made as a demo before America recorded their fourth album. It didn't make the cut for that album, and so was included in their next album. Magic by PilotBruce's staff pick is the first hit single from short-lived Scottish pop rock band pilot. The inspiration for this song is a sunrise on Blackford Hill in Edinburgh. Lead singer David Paton also worked with the original lineup of The Alan Parson's Project, and worked with Kate Bush, Camel, and Rick Wakeman. The band had a couple of other hits before splitting in 1977. NOVELTY TRACK:You Never Even Called Me By My Name by David Allen CoeThe perfect country and western song was released in 1975, and reached number 8 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

Blanco Brown's viral hit “The Git Up” (certified 11x PLATINUM across three countries) took the world by storm, claiming the top spot in charts across the globe and spawning nearly 4 billion views across social platforms. It claimed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for 12 weeks and was the top-selling digital Country song in the US for 13 weeks, resulting in Billboard naming him as their Top New Country Artist for 2019. His multi-national Platinum-certified collaboration “Just the Way” with Parmalee has garnered more than 300 million on-demand streams, earning him his first No. 1 hit on Country radio (in the US and Canada). No stranger to collaborations, Blanco has worked alongside artists like Fergie, Childish Gambino, Kane Brown and Chris Brown – and he recently collaborated with Nelly and BRELAND for their funky fun “High Horse,” and “Never Gonna Tame You (Original Song from The Mustangs: America's Wild Horses),” written by Diane Warren. In September 2020, Brown was in a life-threatening accident and has been recovering, leaning on creating music to heal — the first taste of that is “Nobody's More Country,” available now. EPISODE 15 - EXTERNAL Version for Non-Spotify Listeners! Shout out to all those from a small town! In high school I lived in a town of 500 people - everyone knew everyone! "if you haven't heard a rumor by noon, Start one!" was one of the first lessons that I learned! Yes, living in a small town has some disadvantages - like, we didn't have a stoplight or a drive thru - I had to drive to larger community with my driving instructor to experience that! The one thing that I loved about a small town was the community! Being known, cared for and recognized was a great benefit of small town life! So, if you are listening to this today, and you find yourself in a small community, these two songs celebrate you! You are the star of this episode! Two songs today for you - Miranda Lambert - Famous in a small town and John Mellencamp - Small Town "Famous in a Small Town" is a song co-written and recorded by American country music artist Miranda Lambert. It was released in April 2007 as the second single from her album Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. It was Lambert's second Top 20 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. It was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance in 2008. The song was written by Lambert and Travis Howard. The song was ranked number 40 on Engine 145's 50 Best Country Songs of 2007 "Small Town" is a 1985 song written by John Mellencamp and released on his 1985 album Scarecrow. The song reached #6 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and #13 Adult Contemporary. DID I SHAVE MY LEGS FOR THIS (1996)Album Information: Did I Shave My Legs for This is the debut studio album of American country artist Deana Carter, released via Patriot Records in the UK in 1995. In 1996, Capitol Records had Carter record new material for the North American release of the album, which included three songs from the original release.[8] This version features her breakthrough debut single "Strawberry Wine", a number-one hit on the Billboard [[Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart at the end of that year. "We Danced Anyway", "Count Me In", and the title track were also released as a singles. Of these, "We Danced Anyway" and the promotional single "How Do I Get There" also reached number one. (Wikipedia)Album InfoEverything's Gonna Be Alright (1998)Everything's Gonna Be Alright is the second studio album by American country music artist Deana Carter. Released in 1998 as her second and final studio album for Capitol Records Nashville, it features the single "Absence of the Heart", a number 16 hit on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts in late 1998. "You Still Shake Me" and "Angels Working Overtime" were released as the second and third singles, and peaked at numbers 36 and 35, respectively. "Ruby Brown" failed to chart in the U.S., but managed to reach number 74 on the country charts in Canada.Album InfoFather Christmas (2001)This holiday album manages to be great despite itself -- one of Deana Carter's strengths is her songwriting; this is a collection largely of standards. Even though it adds a kind of fireside charm, the guitar accompaniment, provided by her father, Fred Carter, Jr., seems ham-handed and often off-tempo. The only thing about the album that isn't flawed is her voice. Subtle and sweet, she charms throughout and sets a gentle, soothing tone that is perfect for a wintry evening. Carter has also managed to present a holiday album that manages to exude a down-home country style without resorting to stereotypical twanginess and fiddles. Father Christmas may not go too far to try to be original or different, but it is pretty memorable just the way it is.Album InfoI'm Just A Girl (2003)I'm Just a Girl is the fourth studio album released by American country singer/songwriter Deana Carter. The album peaked at #6 on the U.S. Top Country Albums chart and #58 on the Billboard 200, and produced two singles. "There's No Limit" was released in late 2002 as the lead single. The song was Carter's first Top 20 hit since "Absence of the Heart" in 1998, when it peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks #interview #countrymusic #deanacarter chart in early 2003. The title track was released as the album's second single, which was a minor Top 40 hit. This was Carter's only release on Arista Nashville; she then switched to Vanguard for her next albums. The cover resembles a magazine cover.Album InfoThe Story of My Life (2005)The Story of My Life is the fifth studio album released by American country singer/songwriter Deana Carter. The album peaked at #26 on the U.S. Top Country Albums chart and #150 on the Billboard 200. "One Day at a Time" was released in March 2005 as the lead-off single, and entered the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for the week of April 9, 2005 at #57. It reached a peak of #55 after three weeks, although the song later reappeared on the chart for two additional weeks in late June-early July. The follow-up singles, "The Girl You Left Me For", "Sunny Day", and "In a Heartbeat", failed to enter the chart altogether.Album InfoThe Chain (2007)The Chain is the sixth studio album of American country singer/songwriter Deana Carter, first released in 2007. Since, the album has peaked at #60 on the US Country chart. The first and only single off the album, "On the Road Again," was released in 2007, failing to land on the

Where does the loveable-outlaw image of the professional trucker first come into play in a big way in American culture? Perhaps the earliest notable instance came with Dave Dudley's hit, “Six Days on the Road.” American culture expert Todd Uhlman makes that association in this ongoing "Overdrive's Songs of the Highway" series, part of Overdrive's ongoing 60th anniversary celebration with coverage of trucking history: http://overdriveonline.com/trucking-history “Six Days” remains in contemporary times one of trucking's most popular songs -- a decade ago around Overdrive's 50th anniversary, readers voted the track as the No. 1 trucking song of all time: https://www.overdriveonline.com/channel-19/article/14875984/results-the-top-10-trucking-songs-of-all-time It was initially record by Paul Davis and released in 1961, but it was Dudley who put it on the map with his version in 1963. It reached number two on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and crossed over at No. 32 on its broader Hot 100 chart. A former trucker, Dudley packed the lyrics with details from the road. The song included references to speeding, popping pills, a “Georgia overdrive,” emitting black exhaust, dodging scales and being behind on his logs. ...
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Kidd G over Zoom video! With a rare gift for turning his hometown experiences into natural melodies, Kidd G has found tremendous success by staying true to his roots. As a kid growing up in small-town Georgia, he first started creating his own songs at the age of 15, and soon arrived at a gritty but melodic sound equally inspired by classic country and hip-hop. On the heels of his chart-climbing breakthrough single “Dirt Road”—an October 2020 release whose video surpassed 5 million YouTube views in little over a month—Kidd G has now shared his debut EP; the powerfully heartfelt Teenage Dream. Born Gabriel Horne and raised in the town of Hamilton (population 1,130), Kidd G got his start singing at the age of 11 with the full support of his music-loving family (his great uncle played bass in Fleetwood Mac, and both his parents are hobbyist singers). Within several years he’d set up a makeshift studio in his bedroom and started recording with his friends, partly mining inspiration from new age rappers like Juice WRLD. One of his first viral moments was his video, “Letter to Juice”, a minute-long verse over a melancholic beat paying homage to the late artist. But while early tracks like his debut single “Sorry” lean toward traditional hip-hop, Kidd G later brought an element of old-school country into his songwriting. “I love country because it feels so natural to me, and you can really tell stories in the songs,” he notes, naming Hank Williams Jr. among the artists he grew up on. As he continued posting his music on SoundCloud, Kidd G soon amassed a dedicated following undeniably drawn to his down-home charm and the honest detail of his lyrics. With the arrival of “Dirt Road,” that following grew exponentially as Kidd G saw the nostalgia-soaked track gain serious traction on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and land on coveted Spotify playlists like Fresh Finds Country and Next From Nashville. Teenage Dream is a perfect showcase for Kidd G’s sound and sensibilities, merging potent beats with earthy guitar work and his warm yet dynamic vocal delivery. On the EP’s title track, for instance, Kidd G shares a poignant portrait of high-school love, beautifully capturing each memory in his bittersweet drawl and masterful flow. “That song’s about my truck, my ex-girlfriend, the place where I live,” he says. “I love my town because it’s simple and slow, but there’s always something fun going on.” Although he collaborated with producers like Morgan O’Connor and Bonnie Dymond on Teenage Dream, most of the EP was written solely by Kidd G, who purposely avoids putting any pressure on his creative process. “I really just go off my emotions and whatever I’m feeling at the time, then start laying down some ideas,” he says. “Once I come up with that main hook for a song, the whole thing comes together.” Thanks to that deliberately laid-back approach, all of Kidd G’s music unfolds with a carefree energy that lightens any mood. “A lot of my songs come from me just getting stuff off my mind, and I hope it helps other people get through the day and get through their problems—maybe make life a little easier for them,” he says. But as Kidd G reveals, the ultimate test of a song’s power invariably happens in his hometown. “Most of the time when I’m making a song I’m thinking about how my friends will react to it,” he says. “That’s when I know something’s good: when I’m working on it and I start thinking, ‘I can’t wait to get back home and show this to my friends.’” And as he looks to the future, Kidd G plans to maintain that hometown spirit while massively expanding his musical horizons. “My goal is to get a platinum record,” he says, “reach No. 1 on Billboard, sell out arenas, and perform in front of millions of people.” We want to hear from you! On this special bonus episode of The Fred Minnick Show, Adam Hambrick is the guest. The country singer-songwriter is a Capitol Records artist who has written songs for artists like Dan + Shay, Justin Moore, Lindsay Ell, the Eli Young Band and others. In 2019, his solo single "Rockin' All Night Long" hit No. 4 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. His latest EP, Give Her a Rose, was released in December 2020. On the show, Adam and Fred talk songwriting, Nashville, Elvis Presley, whiskey, cellphones and plenty more. Whiskeys tasted: Angel's Envy Finished in Tawny Port Casks (21:16) Old Forester Rye (22:49) Kentucky Owl 11 Year Rye (22:49) Michter's 20 Year (38:09) EPISODE SUMMARY Fred and Adam touch on a number of points, such as: Fred starts the show by noting this bonus interview with Adam Hambrick happened in person, pre-Covid. Adam talks about the writing of the Lindsay Ell hit, "I Don't Love You," which he co-wrote, and how he got into writing songs. Adam talks about singing and how he's been singing since age 3, followed by his shift into songwriting - and then back into being a recording artist. Adam says it's "the Wild West" in terms of putting out music in modern times. Adam's impression of Will Ferrell impersonating Harry Caray is a highlight at around the 17:36 mark. Hambrick says he's a slow sipper and details his relationship with whiskey. Fred then breaks down Adam's palate by asking his food and flavor preferences. The verdict: Sweet tooth - but not too Adam: "I'm sneaky old. I've got two kids at home and a mortgage." Adam explains how songwriters do what they do and tells Fred he essentially does something similar with his whiskey and bourbon writing. They talk about how modern phones have become a constant distraction and shortened our attention spans, changing how we think and how we process information. Adam admits this knowledge has given him a "healthy disdain" for his phone. Fred notes that he is in the "eyeballs" business - attracting people's eyes - while Adam is in the "earballs" business, drawing chuckle from the songwriter. Of the Michter's 20-year-old bourbon, Adam says, "Oh my goodness. Holy cow." That about sums it up. They talk "special occasion" whiskeys. Fred says, "You know what's a special occasion to me? Waking up in the morning." On the way out, Fred and Adam decide to "solve some world problems." At that point, the conversation turns back to how cell phones have taken over our world. Adam notes that positive reinforcement on social media offers a hit of dopamine, which makes it a literal addiction. But then they talk about bologna sandwiches and mayonnaise. QUOTABLES Asked if he considers himself more singer or songwriter, Adam responds, "It's kind of all one river. When I'm writing songs, I'm always writing for myself in some way. And sometimes those songs don't fit the project, they don't fit what you're going to put out, so you just leave it open-handed and, like, if this fits for somebody else, by all means please record it." Billy Gilman has sold over 5 million albums and became a recognized voice in country music in 2000, at the age of 11, when he released his debut single “One Voice,” on Epic Records (Sony Nashville). The song shot onto the Billboard Top 40 charts making Billy the youngest artist to ever have a top 40 single on the country chart and ultimately reaching top 20 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Check out the original music video HERE. In 2016, Billy auditioned and landed a spot on NBC's The Voice, where he flipped the chairs of all four judges and ultimately chose to be on Adam Levine's team. The decision took him to the finals, where Billy became the runner-up during the finale. Now, in 2020, the subject matter of “One Voice,” is just as important as it was when the song was originally released 20 years ago. “I would never have imagined that America, let alone in the world, we would be seeing so many suicides,” says Billy. “If we could be a little nicer to one another and learn that we are all made differently, but we all deserve kindness, love, and respect it would make the world a better place.” # # # Suggested post: .@BillyGilman celebrates 20th Anniversary of hit single #OneVoiceBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

This week, Carter Family legacy, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and country music superstar Carlene Carter recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View, Arkansas. Also, interviews with this scion of American music royalty. Carlene Carter is an American country singer and songwriter. She is the daughter of June Carter and her first husband, Carl Smith. Between 1978 and the present, Carter has recorded twelve albums, primarily on major labels. In the same timespan, she has released more than twenty singles, including three No. 3-peaking hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Carlene has always straddled the line between country and rock, following her own path. As a rock singer in the mid-'70s, she became immersed in the new wave before emerging as a new country singer in the late '80s. Through it all, her music has always infused roots music with a nervy, edgy energy. Her mother, June Carter-Cash would frequently take her daughter on Carter Family tours, which meant that Carlene developed a musical interest at an early age. When she was 12, her mother married Johnny Cash. Following the marriage, Carlene and her stepsister, Rosanne Cash, became backup singers in the Carter/Cash touring show. In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers a 1978 archival recording of Ozark original Pappy Shorey and his shape note singers performing the hymn “How Beautiful Heaven Must Be,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. Writer, musician, and traditional dancer Aubrey Atwater discusses the surprising origins of yodeling and its appearance in generations of traditional folk and popular music throughout the world with musical examples and her own cultivated insight.

This episode of the Tasty Brew Music Podcast is a conversation I had with Texas Songwriter and author Radney Foster…. Initially a songwriter in Nashville, Tennessee, Foster made his recording debut as part of the Foster & Lloyd duo, recording three studio albums and with nine singles on the country charts. Foster began his solo career in 1992 and his album Del Rio, TX 1959 produced four consecutive Top 40 hits. Overall, Foster has had thirteen songs on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, including the Top Ten hits "Just Call Me Lonesome" (#10, 1992) and "Nobody Wins" (#2, 1993). His songs have been recorded by Gary Allan, Sara Evans, Keith Urban, Hootie and the Blowfish and Jack Ingram. He is now producing, writing screenplays, short stories and novels. He’s been one of my favorites since I discovered him nearly 20 years ago on a KGSR Radio Compilation CD. I was in Red River to attend Larry Joe Taylor’s Annual Hot Chili Days and Cool Summer Nights Music Festival featuring Texas Singer/Songwriters. Radney was the featured performer at a kick off event on a mountaintop currently serving as Michael Martin Murphey’s Bitter Creek Ranch and through the kindness and tenacity of his manager (and wife) Cyndi Hoelzel, we were able to find a precious block of time before Radney had to leave for sound check. Although Radney, via Cyndi, had agreed to the sit down weeks in advance, with no cell service in town, unknown daily schedule until the day of and limited internet connectivity, it was very challenging to find a suitable venue for our conversation. We settled on the second floor lobby of the rustic Red River Lodge next to the Mother Lode Saloon, windows wide open to the street during an ongoing rain shower. Radney has done yeoman’s work with SongwritingWith Soldiers, a non-profit transforming veterans’ lives by using collaborative songwriting to expand creativity, connections, and strengths. As the mother of a Marine suffering from PTSD, it was an honor and privilege to spend this precious time with Radney Foster….enjoy!
