Today on Too Opinionated we visit with singer/songwriter Sonia Leigh! Sonia's new single, Thin Ice is out now! 'Thin Ice' is a hard hitting anthem fueled with pure rock and roll energy. With nods to the likes of The Killers, Bruce Springsteen, and Joan Jett, its growl calls for burning down the barriers around one's self to realize full potential. It highlights the feeling of walking a tightrope of self-doubt that can keep you in a self-created prison. ‘Thin Ice' emulates the courage to step into your power and soar." Blending Country, Americana, Rock, Pop, Hip Hop and everything in between, this Georgia native and now much loved Nashville local has toured the world with the likes of Eric Church, Melissa Etheridge, Amos Lee, Zac Brown Band, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, and Joan Jett. Leigh's energetic performance is packed with magnetic conviction that can hush a room and shake the walls with her raw, raspy delivery, squeezing every drop out of the stage and leaves the crowd shouting for more! Leigh made her country music debut on Zac Brown's Southern Ground Records in 2011 with the hit album '1978 December'. Leigh re-released the single (of same title) in 2020, highlighting her piano and prolific songwriting chops, produced by Roger Taylor, (Queen). Zak Brown Band's Grammy award winning record ‘Uncaged' featured two singles written by Leigh, “Goodbye In Her Eyes” and “Sweet Annie”, both reached #1 on the Billboard Country Airplay charts concurrently. Leigh's current projects include hip hop/rock duo TYGR/TYGR w/ Daphne Willis (Position Music), laid-back low-fi 90's hip-hop duo Indica Girlz, and the mysterious grunge-pop project Rob The Man, all pending follow-up releases in 2023. Meanwhile, Leigh has been writing and gearing up for her solo Sonia Leigh record, due for release in 2023. As well as writing #1 hit songs, Leigh has songs featured in hit television shows ('The Good Wife''), films ("Queen Pins"), and video games ('The Sims'), and has rapidly gained a name for herself in the sync world, signing a deal with David Polemi (BMG) in 2019. Hailed as “the most promising and influential new country star of the last five years" by The New York Times, he is a multi-platinum, ACM, CMA, CMT, and Billboard Music Award-winning artist from Asheville, NC. His new deluxe album, What You See Ain't Always What You Get, recently debuted at #1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart as well as Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. It also set the new weekly streaming record for a country album with 102.26 million on-demand streams, breaking his own record, which was set last November with the release of his platinum-certified, global #1 album, What You See Is What You Get. The new deluxe album features all 18 tracks from What You See Is What You Get as well as five new songs including “Forever After All,” which debuted at #2 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart—the highest entrance ever for a male country solo artist. Adding to a series of groundbreaking and historic years, Combs recently made history as the first artist ever to have their first two studio albums spend 25 weeks or more at #1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart—breaking Taylor Swift’s previously held record at 24 weeks. The achievement comes as What You See Is What You Get topped the chart for the 25th time, while his 2017 debut, This One’s For You, has spent 50 non-consecutive weeks at #1—tying the record for the longest reign atop the chart. Moreover, Combs recently won two awards at the 55th ACM Awards, three awards at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards, and two awards at the 54th CMA Awards. Continuing his triumphant run at country radio, Combs’ recent single, “Lovin’ On You,” spent multiple weeks at #1 on both the Mediabase/Country Aircheck chart and the Billboard Country Airplay chart. This is Combs’ ninth-consecutive #1 single—a first on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart—as well as his eighth single to spend multiple weeks at #1. His current single, “Better Together,” is already top 10 at country radio and rising. Surviving the Music Industry

A life of twists and turns has led Matt Stell in more than a few directions, but on the heels of his impressive breakthrough year with his hit "Prayed For You." He's keeping his eyes forward with his next song, "If I Was A Bar." At one time, Matt was a collegiate basketball star playing the bars and clubs of Missouri and Arkansas under the name Paul Wayne Walker because his coaches frowned upon his late-night activities. It came down to a decision to move to Nashville to pursue a songwriter's career or his next step in a pre-medical program at Harvard extension school. But luckily, Matt made the right choice and the accolades to prove it. “Prayed For You,” is the ONLY debut artist single to top the Billboard Country Airplay chart in 2019. In addition to holding No.1 for two consecutive weeks on Billboard, Stell’s hit topped the Country Aircheck/MediabaseAirplay chart. He fully admits there is no pressure to come up with a hit though. He's more concerned for his musicians and team during this trying time, and rectifying the systemic issues that are troublesome today.

As of today, there is only one woman in the Top 30 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart: Maren Morris, whose single “Rich” is currently No. 5. Maren stopped by Women Want to Hear Women this week and delivered an open and honest dialogue about the current state of women in the country industry, differences in the pop world, how to correct some of the problems and much more. “I feel conflicted, because I worked so hard to put this album [Hero] out with songs that I dearly care about, and it’s sad because I want to celebrate the fact that my song is in the Top 5, but I also feel like I can’t fully celebrate because I am the only woman in the Top 30,” said Maren to Elaina. “It feels like a catch 22 sometimes because I feel ungrateful when I bring attention to the fact there is such a lack of female representation at radio right now. But I’m also thankful, so I do feel on the fence about it because I’m obviously so gracious that radio is playing this and fans are loving this song, but at the same time I want to be able to celebrate my friends that are putting out incredible music that aren’t even getting a single spin. It’s a weird spot to be in. I want to inspire and help change the landscape and get more female voices heard, but it’s definitely concerning to look at the chart today and literally be the only one that’s a woman on it.” You asked for Maren, and we’re so thrilled we could make it happen—and we’re thankful Maren continues to demonstrate the courage to speak her mind like a true leader and role model. Hope you enjoy! Show Participants: Maren Morris Elaina Smith, host of Women Want to Hear Women Videos: Maren discusses being the only female in the Top 30 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart.
