Song written and composed by Bob Dylan
POPULARITY
At this week's rehearsal, Pamela Bowen, our manager/videographer, captured a couple more of the tunes that we are considering for inclusion in that new album we hope to start working on later this year. And, without our intending it, the two songs she videoed just happened to share the theme of rainy days and sunny days. That's a hoot, even if it was unplanned.About the SongsThe first song on today's “video extra” is The Flood's take on Bob Dylan's composition “Make You Feel My Love,” which debuted on Bob's Time Out of Mind album in 1997. As we reported earlier, this tune attracted a celebrated following, with covers by Billy Joel, Garth Brooks, Neil Diamond and Adele. It also has a prominent position in “Girl from the North Country,” the Tony-award-winning musical that currently is touring the U.S. The play centers on the music and lyrics of 28 songs Dylan wrote over the past 60 years. The second song on Pamela's video is Randy Hamilton's treatment of the Bobby Hebb classic, “Sunny.” As we wrote earlier, the song that Hebb wrote on that cold November night in 1963 not only sustained his career for a lifetime, but has become one of the world's most beloved jazzy anthems to optimism and joy. Its back story is fascinating.About the GraphicsBy the way, the graphics used throughout today's video are products of Charlie Bowen's new online toy. Have you heard about Google's new ImageFX software?ImageFX is new standalone artificial intelligence image generator that Google released three months ago as part of its AI Test Kitchen. It creates graphics from simple text phrases entered at the prompt, and it's all free. It's a ball to play with. Just type in ideas for a picture and see what it comes up with. For instance, we typed in “heart drawn on a rain-streaked window” and got four variations on this:All the pictures used to illustrate the two songs in Pamela's video were generated by ImageFX. But Back to the Songs….Back to The Flood's studio project, this will be our first new album since Paul Martin put together Speechless in 2021, and it will be the first to feature our newest Floodsters, Danny Cox and Jack Nuckols. We'd love to have your help to planning it. Send us your suggestions — just drop an email to Charlie at designbybowen@gmail.com — and we'll keep you posted as the work continues. This is a public episode. When Adele recorded “Make You Feel My Love” in 2008 for her debut album 19, many of her fans assumed she wrote it. After all, the British superstar-to-be had written or co-written all the other songs on that disc. However, more cosmopolitan ears in the crowd knew the truth, that this song had a distinguished pedigree all its own.In fact, it was Bob Dylan who wrote “Make You Feel My Love” for his 1997 Time Out of Mind album, and immediately the song attracted an illustrious following. Among the artists in the next decade to cover the tune on their own albums were Billy Joel (1997), Garth Brooks (1998), Trisha Yearwood (1998), Joan Osbourne (2000), Mary Black (2005), Maria Muldaur (2006), Bryan Ferry (2007) and Neil Diamond (2008).Meanwhile, Bob himself performed the song live more than 300 times in concerts between 1997 and 2019 on his Never Ending Tour.“It is one of the few songs,” says Wikipedia, “to have achieved the status of becoming a ‘standard' in the 21st century, having been covered by more than 450 different artists.”Our Take on the TuneSo, The Flood is pretty late to the party on this one. We didn't start playing it until earlier this year.It all began last fall, when Pamela and Charlie Bowen trekked to Cincinnati's Aronoff Center to see a road company performance of Girl from the North Country. This Tony-award-winning musical centers on the music and lyrics of 28 Dylan songs written over the past 60 years. The Bowens sat transfixed for the entire performance. Their ears especially perked up at the start of the second act when the characters of Mrs. Neilsen and Mrs. Burke stopped time in its tracks with their stunning rendition of “Make You Feel My Love.”All the way home to Huntington the next day, Charlie simply couldn't get the melody out of his mind. Within a week or so, he had roughed out an arrangement, knowing full well that it would be fleshed out as soon as he shared it with the guys. Here, from last week's rehearsal, is where that work stands now.More Dylan? Step Right This Way!By the way, Bob's tunes have been central to The Flood since its beginnings. We're late to the party on this tune. Bob Dylan wrote this more than a quarter of century ago, but we just started doing it a few weeks ago. However, it's suddenly landed solidly in the repertoire. Here's our take on “Make You Feel My Love.”

No other Bob Dylan song has provoked such a diverse range of responses as "Make You Feel My Love". Initially dismissed by reviewers as a failure, it has since grown into a wildly successful pop hit. It's the song that's loved by the masses, but hated by Dylan purists. Perhaps what's at the heart of this fundamental disagreement is a different question altogether: is this a banal love song, or does it have a deeper, perhaps even darker meaning? Episode#119: This Is How It Goes (Song starts at 4:28) The evening I recorded this episode, I went outside because I heard a strange song. A chorus of hundreds of frogs could be heard on the wind. Talk about nature's tune. These frogs were really making a racket. As it turned out, this fitted in nicely with the song featured on this week's episode. ‘This Is How It Goes' talks about getting in touch with nature's tune. Also, following on from the essence of last week's podcast: as we are all in a state of constant change, we might as well do it in conjunction with nature - it just might be a smoother path. What inspired me to write this song? Well, to answer that, I'd like to share this: a reader of my blog posts contacted me recently to let me know she enjoyed me sharing the 'how I paint a seascape foreground'. This sort of showing the ‘step by step process' is much like how I share how I write a song here. She was amazed I was self taught as a painter (as I am, as a songwriter).. I replied, quoting something I read about: if you put 10,000 hours into something , you're going to come up with something...substantial. I think for a few reasons. You're not going to do anything by choice for 10000 hours unless it's something you're passionate about. So it's likely to be something that comes naturally to you. Also, you're going to make 10,000 mistakes along the way, as you figure out your style. You figure out which mistakes you're going to keep as you find your own voice. Your natural, original voice. It's something that you'll know when you find it- and others will know, too. Everybody enjoys different sorts of voices. I'm a big fan of Bob Dylan. I love the way he sings Make You Feel My Love. There's so much felling and experience in his voice. I think if you find your own voice in life, regardless of what you get up to, it'll all come together for you, somehow. That's the essence of this song. I'm pleased I chose to share this song in this episode, following on from last week's Patient Hum from 1998 . You can hear the evolution of a songwriter. This one was written in 2016. 18 years are going to bring about some changes. And that is the path of the artist & the songwriter; it's a slowly changing mysterious path. This podcast is slowly evolving. Each episode unfolds in a very free manner. I record these episodes without any sort of script or forethought. I let the song, the music and the lyrics lead the way - and I make sure I'm having fun. Eventually I'll produce a video course based on aspects of this podcast. I'm looking forward to that ( I've already done a lot of work towards my ebooks and video courses. How I: play piano; paint seascapes; draw cartoons, etc). You can keep up with me by joining my email list. That way you won't miss a thing. My blog has the lyrics to this song ( I include the lyrics each week) on www.petepascoe.wordpress.com I hope you enjoy hearing about the song This Is How It Goes. It's always a surprise to me where these episodes get to - and this one is no exception. Enjoy.

Vicki O'Grady is a Florida Licensed Mental Health Counselor, author, and accomplished workshop presenter. She has worked in the fields of mental health, addictions, eating disorders and personal growth since the late 70's. Vicki has traveled throughout the United States and Israel presenting personal growth workshops and seminars. She is the former President and founder of Personal Power and Prosperity, a personal growth organization. In 2014, Vicki started the You Matter Compassion Project, which involves giving out YOU MATTER cards. Upward of 2 million have been given out by people in the US, Israel and other countries. Memorable Quotes: “We're all seeking through outside experiences and through other people to validate our specialness, our goodness. We're trying to feel that unconditional love from a person that gives our life meaning. And one of the things that I found is that we all seek things outside of ourselves to try and give us that, whether it's an addiction or a person or a job or exercise.” “People say you can't love other people until you love yourself. And I don't believe that's true. I know that I loved and gave love before I loved myself. But the difference was when I really did love myself, I trusted your love.” “I don't want to be a person who causes harm in the world. I want to be a person who does kind acts. And I want to make this distinction because I think it's really important. I still think mean thoughts. I still shook my fist at somebody who pulled out in front of me yesterday. Twice. I still think these things, but I don't give myself permission to act on them. That's the difference today.” What You'll Learn: The importance of telling other people that they matter and how to love others in spite of your own healing journey. This Episode Includes: How Vicki started the You Matter movement by writing signs to show people while in her car. Signs like “sorry” and “your tail lights are off” turned into a sign that said, “You Matter.” Different reasons why people need to hear that they matter. The “feel-good” hormones like serotonin and dopamine are released when we create connections with others. Telling people they matter is a great way to build connections and spread kindness. The origins of the You Matter Marathon movement. A lot of people grow up not realizing how special they are. They look for meaning in other things that are not fulfilling. When people feel like they matter, they stop looking for validation from outside sources. We don't have to be perfect to be kind, we simply have to refuse to act on mean impulses and choose kindness instead. Three Takeaways From Today's Episode: Choose one person today and tell them, “Hey, you matter.” Identify one act of kindness you can perform, either for yourself or someone else. Comfort, connection and compassion are vital to our growth and happiness, and all need to come from an outside source. Clare Dunn has been one of my favorite artists since releasing singles "Move On" and "Tuxedo" a few years ago. If you're not familiar with her name, I suggest you catch her live show. She is one of the most electric performers I've EVER seen. This week, I sat down with Clare to talk about what it's like being a woman in the male-dominated country genre, patience, dogs, dancing, alter egos and more. Clare also shared some great advice for aspiring artists entering the country music industry. In addition, Clare helps me curate this week's WWTHW playlist and she "Plays It Forward" with a cover of "Make You Feel My Love" and a performance of her new single, "More." Rick is out of town for the weekend so last night I decided to revisit this set only to realize I made a glaring omission; I left out "Make You Feel My Love." The song was originally written by Bob Dylan but never released until much later. When the original surfaced, Billy Joel, Trisha Yearwoood and Garth Brooks all did remakes of the song. To this day, I hold the Garth Brooks version very close to my heart. Listening to the version by Adele, brought back all those old feelings of betrayal, resentment and revenge; feelings that I have managed to suppress in sour relationships since then because it makes me appear petty, if not foolish. It came out in 1998, a time when my relationship with Pete was on the rocks as I talked about in the DIVA Tribute to Erasure. I would go to this dive billiard hall and have a couple of Bohemia's (Mexican beer) and play that song on the jukebox over and over while drowning in my own tears before heading to the gay bar for the rest of the evening. Knowing that Pete would be there, it aloud me to clear my head in advance, lest I do something stupid. I've included two versions of the song; one a dance version and the other a more chilled version that keeps up with the tempo of the original. The dance version is really good but I just wish they had slowed it down some. If you don't like the additions, I suggest you keep the original set as the newer version is replacing the older one which will no longer be available. English singer Adele (Adele Laurie Blue Adkins) won two Grammy's for her debut album 19 in 2009 and it's been nothing but uphill since then. After the success of that album, if you still didn't know who she was, you couldn't avoid her after her sophomore album release 21. Her amazing performance of "Rolling In the Deep" on the Letterman Show further solidified her name and went on to win an additional six Grammy's including Album of the Year. By the time 25 landed, all bets were off when she won a contentious battle of the Grammy for Album of the Year beating out another one of our favorite divas Beyoncé. While heartfelt, her acceptance speech may have been slightly over the top but all is forgiven because she was (as in past interviews) genuinely sincere if not surprised by her win. While lacking the vocal gymnastics of her predecessors, Adele has put herself in a position to wrangle the mantle away from Celine Dion who stole it from Barbra Streisand. She has the qualities of Celine's overly genuine and heartfelt gratitude and sincerity with Barbra's street smarts, honesty, and use of frosty language to express her views. Combined with her outstanding beauty and talent, she IS the ultimate DIVA. Party Favorz is proud if not downright giddy about inducting one of our favorite artists of the 21st century into the DIVA Hall of Fame. Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome our newest DIVA, Adele. I want to give a HUGE shout-out to those that answered my call to keep Party Favorz afloat on our 10th year providing the finest dance music podcasts to be found anywhere on the net. MASSIVE hugs and kisses goes out to: Ludovic D., John D., Raymond C., Glenn A. (aka DiscoBall), Raul G., Doug B., Nicolas C., Ray J., and Gary N. Party Favorz is still collecting donations for the ongoing monthly costs of running the site so feel free to contribute if you can. The PayPal donations button is now fully operational. Thanks Again!
