Lady A (formerly Lady Antebellum) have been together almost 20 years as a group. Members Hillary Scott and Charles Kelley both announced they're expecting a new baby with their spouses! Dave Hayward also welcomed his third child last summer. This trio is one of my top 5 favorites bands, and I saw them 10 years ago while I was working in country radio. We're stoked to have Charles on the podcast this week, and we waste no time jumping into some good stories. After a 7-minute opening from Pepe and Bash, the episode opens up with a memory rehash of a time at Oakmont CC. Charles lends his thoughts on playing at Oakmont and we relive a night there two years ago with George Birge. We jump over to some Augusta talk, and ironically, it's where Charles grew up. He gives us a glimpse into what growing up next to Augusta National was like, especially with the range balls. We switch it up a bit and get into the story of how Charles made it to Nashville. With the band in place, the story of Lady A takes shape, and the rest is history. He refers to this as ‘rare and random'. We chat about Lady A and the path the band has been on, ups and downs. He also hints at a potential ‘solo' album he's working on.We sprint ahead in this episode and get into some personal talks about his past and the roads he traveled. The episode continues on this path, and we hear about his life and health now and how decisions he's made have affected him in a positive way. We round out the episode with more golf talk. If you're a golf enthusiast, this golf talk will make too much sense. The episode ends with our standard tap-in segment presented by Bettinardi Golf where we ask Charles four questions that demand his quick response. Lady A's Charles Kelley is now 9 months sober after opening up about his struggles with alcohol abuse in August 2022. The 41-year-old recently sat down with Kelli of KFRG's The Wake Up Call and shared more about what his current relationship looks like with alcohol and the journey he's been on to get there. “There is nothin' wrong with drinkin',” Charles said when asked about his sobriety. “I wish I could still do it, I'm just one of those people that can't — If I have one, I want to have ten.” He continued, “It got where it wasn't fun anymore and I think, for me… I remember being around sober people and I was just like, ‘I don't get it. Just tell yourself to slow down.' But eventually, you get to this point where you really can't. And I think it was just an opportunity to share, ‘Hey, i's OK to admit this thing isn't working for you anymore. There's no weakness in it.'” Kelley says the key to his success has been his family along with friends who allow him to still have fun while offering encouragement along the way. He hopes his experience will prompt others to get the help they need with no shame tor guilt. “It's definitely the hardest thing I've ever done, but the best thing I've ever done,” he said. “Part of this whole journey for me is to be more honest. I don't think I wanted to be any kind of poster child for it — a bunch of my friends still drink and we have a great time and I'm just the guy that doesn't drink and no body even really talks about it. We don't have to talk about it like that. It's just like… you get a lot of encouragement like, ‘Hey man, I'm proud of ya,' so it feels like I'm on a good little track here and that was the biggest thing for me. Just sharing, ‘Hey man, if you're going through it too, you can get through it and there's actually a really fun life ahead. Raised on a farm in Lawrence, Kansas, Ashley Ray has established herself as one of Nashville's most nuanced voices, chasing down critical acclaim not only as a solo artist, but also as an in-demand songwriter for Little Big Town, Lori McKenna, Lady A's Charles Kelley, and others. Her unique approach to melody and storytelling has resulted in partnerships with publishing companies like SonyATV Tree and BMG Nashville. Meanwhile, her albums have earned her shows with Eric Church, Miranda Lambert, and other country trailblazers who, like Ashley, create a modern sound without chasing after modern trends.  Ashley Ray shines a light on her midwestern roots with her third album Pauline, whose autobiographical songs tell true stories of love, loss, and life in Middle America. The album finds her teaming up once again with songwriter/producer Sean McConnell, with whom she co-wrote Little Big Town's GRAMMY-nominated Top 40 hit, "The Daughters."  CONNECT FURTHER:ashleyray.comIG: @ashleyraymusicSpotify: Ashley RayNEW album Follow Your Heart: https://orcd.co/followyourheart Keep in touch with Michael online: https://michaelfranti.com The Stay Human podcast is available wherever you listen to podcasts: https://stayhumanpodcast.com PODCAST EPISODE CREDITS:Executive Producers: Michael Franti and Activist Artists Management Producer: Angie Griffith for BPOSITIIVArtist Manager: Caitlin Stone for Activist Artists ManagementManagement Coordinator: Bryce Matthews for Activist Artists ManagementSocial Media Manager: Kaitlyn Parmenter for Alchemy Artist ServicesPresenting Sponsor: PactInstrumental from: “Crazy For You” by Michael Franti Editing by: Roger Gowdy for Page Turners Studio

Morgan Wallen made his big return to Atlanta last Thursday and Friday and Donna took Charlotte for a little mother/daughter concert. In short: he lives up to his reputation. Donna relives the concert, the atmosphere, the fans and the man that has become one of country music's biggest stars. Also in country music, Lady Antebellum has postponed the rest of its tour dates until 2023 after band member Charles Kelley announced that he is checking into rehab to deal with alcohol issues. Donna and Caddy applaud his bravery and the support that his fellow band members are showing him. Family first, they said. Amen. Britney Spears is in the news after her former husband, and the father of her two boys, took some dirty laundry public when he revealed that their sons have decided they don't want to see Britney anymore. Donna and Caddy talk about how divorce and stardom effect kids in a relationship and what a sh*tty move by K-Fed this was. Lady A to Lady A: “I want you to tell me black lives don't matter, and I'll get out of your way” Pacific Northwest, Lady of Blues, Soul, Funk & Gospel, Anita White -- known professionally as Lady A -- has been hurled into a whirlwind of public controversy following Lady Antebellum's decision to change its name last month. The white country trio -- featuring Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and David Haywood -- dropped Antebellum from its name during the height of racial inequality in America, citing the term "antebellum" as a slave reference. Ironically, they've essentially taken the name from a black woman who's been performing and releasing music under the moniker for more than 30 years. White says she was "blindsided" and upset by the name change with the two artists and their teams connecting for a private Zoom meeting a week after the news made headlines. The country trio shared, "Transparent, honest, and authentic conversations were had. We are excited to share we are moving forward with positive solutions and common ground. The hurt is turning into hope. More to come." The group, which has used both Lady Antebellum and Lady A interchangeably since its inception, has held a trademark on the name for more than a decade. After negotiations fell apart, White's team requested a $10 million buyout for the use of the name. In return, the band filed a lawsuit in a Nashville courtroom asking for a declaration that the trio lawfully use the Lady A trademark, while White also shares the name and retaining her own rights within federal and state laws. The band is not asking for a monetary reward. We reached out to White and offered our podcast as a platform for her to share her candid story. She and her producer, John Oliver III, reveal to Buddy Iahn and Matt Bailey about what really happened during their many talks, why the blues singer refuses to co-exist, and how she was cornered into asking for $10 million. This is the Lady A interview everyone needs to hear! Check out our other Podcasts! Subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify Podcasts, TuneIn and YouTube.
