Episode 281 features John from The Mack Brothers, an indie band from Philly. They just released a new album called Southern Skies. I featured the song “Fruit Punch Loko” on this episode, which we talked about in the interview. John and I both had an affinity for Four Lokos back in the day. I should also mention that this is at least the second time The Mack Brothers have been on the show. Our bands have become fast friends from playing together over the past couple of years in Philly and have had a lot of good times. So it was great to catch up with them and hear about everything they've been up to musically. If you like the new album, you can find it on Spotify and wherever you listen to music. Thanks for listening and supporting local artists. We apologize for any inconvenience.* Noah rose to fame covering chart-topping hits on YouTube. Noah released his first independent, original album, Among The Wildest Things, in 2013. His new album, The Valley, has established him as an artist on the rise in the world of Americana/Country music. His songwriting and soulful vocal delivery are truly unique. His growing presence on YouTube eventually led to his being cast as Roderick Meeks, a pivotal character on FOX’s hit TV show Glee, on it’s the sixth and final season. Noah was featured in several songs on the popular, music-oriented TV show. After the show ended, Noah dove headfirst back into songwriting and touring. His second original album, The Valley, solidifies Noah as one of the freshest new voices in Americana music. He is often compared to artists, such as Ray Lamontagne and Jason Isbell. The Valley is getting major play on streaming services, such as Spotify, Pandora and Apple Music. Noah currently has over 600,000 monthly listeners on Spotify alone. On Episode 88, I'm joined by Reckless Kelly lead vocalist and chief lyricist Willy Braun. This year, the pioneering Americana Country outfit is doing a first with the release of American Jackpot / American Girls, two 10-song full-length albums released the same day. Much as the titles allude, the 20 songs of American Jackpot and American Girls give Braun and company ample of space to explore a multitude of American themes without ever settling in on a "Rah Rah Rah" tired trope. Rather, songs seek out the true essence of the American Spirit with songs about Jackie Robinson, Tom Petty, grandfathers, Grand Canyon mule rules, Western exploration, rural living, a necessary reminder that we're a country of immigrants, the search for a sense of belonging, and that longing for home. Over the course of this hour, Braun and I talk at length about the recording of their latest album (due out Friday, May 22), songwriting, the affects of the Coronavirus on touring bands (and festival curators), playing drums, and working with the likes of fellow Idaho native Jeff Crosby, Jamie Lin Wilson, Jack Ingram, and Bruce Robison (and various multiple collaborators during The Next Waltz sessions). John Reen talks to local Writer Emma Pitt about her writing career in film and TV and the release of her award winning film "The Ballard of a Haunted Man." Emma Pitt was born in Oxfordshire and grew up in the Somerset village of Stogumber where her parents still live. From there, she moved to South East London to study for a Communications and Sociology degree at Goldsmiths University and has lived there ever since. Her work mentor once asked her ‘what do you really want to do?' so with that in mind she enrolled on a TV Script Writing Course at City Lit in Central London. She'd done Script Writing as part of her first degree and often thought about being a writer. Jim Hill taught the course. Jim has a lengthy TV career; he created Boon and directed Lovejoy, Casualty and Minder. 5 minutes into that class, Emma knew this was for her. Jim encouraged her to enrol onto the TV Script Writing MA, which he ran, at De Montfort University in Leicester. It was a 2-year part time course so she moved into a part time role in the Regulatory Performance Team at Kings: a job she is still in. She achieved a Distinction in the MA and won the Media Film and Journalism Prize for Best Project. She then secured an agent, Rebecca Watson at Valerie Hoskins Associates and has since been commissioned to write for Jed Mercurio's ‘Critical' on Sky 1 and has had projects in development with a number of TV companies including Red Productions and ITV. She's also won a number of short play competitions, and one of these plays was a short horror called ‘The Ballad of a Haunted Man'. Emma met TV cameraman Dan Shoring during her MA. In 2017 they decided to turn ‘The Ballad of a Haunted Man' into a short film. Dan organised the crew and Emma assembled the cast: she already knew Helen Lederer, Emma's husband suggested Shane Attwooll, who he knew from the local music scene – Shane had just played George Cornell opposite Tom Hardy in Legend. Helen suggested Eliza Leonard to play her daughter. Thankfully they all loved the script. The film was made with no budget and a lot of good will. Emma also directed and co-produced with Dan. It's now screened at festivals across the world and won a number of awards, including Best Actor for Shane at The Twin Tiers International Film Festival in New York, Best Horror Film at The Mediterranean Film Festival in Cannes and Best Woman Filmmaker for Emma at the Los Angeles Independent Film Awards. In total it's received 3 Best Actor awards, 7 Seven Best Actor nominations, 5 Best Film awards and 17 Best Film nominations. It was released online on Sat 7th March after a 2-year festival run. Her new short film, The Boy Who Thought He Could Fly is just starting on the festival circuit. It stars Shane Attwooll, Jenna Russell and Archie Sanders, and is focused around the themes of grief, loss and of how important it is to talk and to listen. It's already won the Silver Spotlight Award for Best film at Spotlight Film Awards in Atlanta and Best Actor Under 18 at the monthly Gold Film Awards in London for Archie. Emma had a one act play, Invisible String, staged last year at an Off West End Theatre by Get Over It Productions who also staged her short play Ever Changing Skyline at the Chiswick Playhouse earlier this year. Ever Changing Skyline has just been selected by Kibo Productions to be staged as part of their new showcase at the Omnibus theatre in Clapham. She is also developing her own TV project with BBC Drama. Emma is married to Americana/Country singer Dave Sutherland whose music you can hear on both films. The Ballard of a Haunted man has now bee released on Youtube and can be found on the links below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ma19wOk3-o www.maritimeradio.co.uk
A girl in Star City, Arkansas grows up with loving parents who would flirt and sing in harmony to 1960’s break-up songs by Elvis Presley and Skeeter Davis. Summers were spent with her Mammy and Pappy traveling to bluegrass festivals in their motorhome, the little curly haired girl dancing to the fiddles and banjos, embraced by the tight-knit bluegrass community. Her father’s work takes the family to the bayou of Monroe, Louisiana where the utopia is interrupted when her idyllic home breaks up, rocked by infidelity that nobody saw coming and her world is turned upside down. She retreats to the radio, back to her sad country songs, stories woven around her own pain. In the aftermath, she is determined to split town to make a life is on her own terms. In a head-turning spin, a month after high school graduation, she wins the America’sMiss T.E.E.N. Beauty Pageant where she is scouted by a talent agent. She puts her college plans on hold, moves to New York and in a few short years, this small-town girl is making her Broadway debut in Julie Taymor’s “The Green Bird.” As if that wasn’t a ripe enough story for a roller coaster of a country song, fast forward a few years, girl meets boy, girl gets married, has children, spinning on stage after stage until her history catches up to her and she’s playing the part her mother originated, blown sideways by cheating. Once again, she hits the road, landing in Nashville and, as a newly single mother, she turns back to the country and gospel music from her childhood, writing her way to resilience, through the grief, and toward love. With her newest album, “I’m Not Broken,” Sarah Jane Nelson adds her own defiantly triumphant voice to the Americana-Country field. Set in a sonic landscape that recalls the era of artists like Wynonna, Kathy Mattea and Mary Chapin Carpenter, “I’m Not Broken” is an honest breath of fresh air, a deliberate throwback to the days when a fiddle, an acoustic guitar and a rich alto voice could celebrate the fullness of a life hard-fought and hard-won. Pedal steel, fiddle and acoustic guitar opens the record on the title track that lifts to an anthemic chorus that wouldn’t be out of place on commercial country a decade or two ago: “But I’m not broken, I’m not done I get up more than I’m knocked down Put myself back the way I was found” Moving from ballad to a rocker with a rolling banjo, “Reap What You Sow” is a foot-stomping slap to the woman who steals her man “You can take the laundry, the dishes, the dirty bathroom and the kitchen, oh the grass looks green but there’s something you should know”. She addresses the ghosts of her past with “Sins of the Father” and even gives us a beautiful acoustic version of The Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way,” finding the dark intimacy in the 90’s monster hit. This is a singer who fits the cliché: “she could sing the phonebook and make it sound good.” In fact, her search for her voice led her from musical theater to Shakespeare to a 2011 acoustic blues-influenced record of standards. But Nashville does a funny thing to artists, makes a singer into a songwriter and by singing their own songs, the songs bring out a truer voice, teaching the artist something maybe they had forgotten. As rich as cane syrup, Nelson’s honeyed voice is both resilient and vulnerable, gliding through the 12 songs with a gentle familiarity, as if we’ve known her all along. It’s clear this once-musical theater actress has deep roots in country music, as every note rings authentic. This is no small task and not many other singers could pull off this hat trick. Nelson had been toying with her songs for years, writing with babies on her lap, moving from NYC to Oregon to Los Angeles and eventually to Nashville with her first husband, also an actor. But the foundation of her marriage had been crumbling for years and cracked wide open in Nashville. The 12 songs on “I’m Not Broken” are the result of this shift from singing others stories to sing. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/confessionsofanactress/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/confessionsofanactress/support

A few weeks back when we were in Rapid City playing a couple of gigs, we had the opportunity to sit down with Heath Johnson of the Heath Bar Podcast. We did back to back recordings (interviewing the interviewer) and had a blast! You'll really want to listen to them both...we promise! Heath Johnson is an Americana Country songwriter from Spearfish, SD as well as the host of his own podcast called The Heath Bar. He has the gift for conversation and is a really funny guy. We couldn't help but to warm up to him instantly, and It didn't take us long to realize how dedicated he is to helping others. He organizes the South Dakota Songwriters group and activities around the Black Hills area and puts together songwriters rounds for other local artists. Along with his solo shows, he is also the lead in an Americana Honky Tonk band named The Ruthless West and a proud new dad! We hope you enjoy listening to this episode and his as much as we enjoyed capturing them. As a side note, sitting down with Heath was extra special for a few reasons. He's awesome (of course), his podcast is part of the inspiration for ours, and this was our first pod on the go...meaning we're portable baby! Watch out podcasting world!!!! As always, share, rate and review our podcast and help us keep this thing going. Born and raised in Swansea, UK, Steve started out singing in rock bands as a teenager before he came to the public's attention in the mid '90s by way of a beard, long hair and a loincloth - playing Jesus in a West End revival of Jesus Christ Superstar. Signing to Columbia Records soon after the messiah complex wore off, he was molded into a poppy/rocky/folky/country-ish artist - nothing like covering all the bases - and made an album, All I Am. "Despite the musical schizophrenia, he had a ton of fun travelling the world and writing lots of songs, and I even got to play live on legendary UK television's Top Of The Pops, and even made the charts." Steve formed a country rock band, The Storys, made 3 albums and toured the globe with the great and the good, including Santana, Celine Dion, Joe Cocker and Elton John, who declared their first album 'fantastic!'. He is part of an ongoing prog/electronica project with Rob Reed of Magenta called chimpanA. "The first album upset Q Magazine so much that they declared it was 'drowning in a sea of pretentiousness'. They'll be over the moon that our second album is nearly finished." More recently Steve made an Americana/Country album with Rosalie Deighton called Unfolding. In between these adventures, Steve got to write songs for lots of artists including Meatloaf, Slash, and Cliff Richard, worked with heroes Jon Lord of Deep Purple, Eric Woolfson of The Alan Parsons Project, and even gave a singing lesson to Robert Plant. Steve is currently recording a collection of old, new, borrowed and blue songs for a series of 4 EPs. "They've got a kind of Americana vibe, I guess because it's all I'm really listening to these days, and I think they are sounding really sweet. Words feature very heavily in this genre, and I'm really enjoying wrestling lyrics to the mat, and trying to really get inside the songs, digging deep to soul mine my truth right now. I'm probably the happiest musically I've ever been!" www.stevebalsamomusic.com @stevebalsamo Twitter and Facebook @stevebalsamomusic on Instagram

A California girl with a country heart, Shannon Rae lights up a stage. Whether displaying strength or vulnerability, she passionately taps into the power and emotion of her songs with a clear command of her voice and presence. As a singer-entertainer for most of her life, she is a former Miss Long Beach, three time Miss Hot Rod Magazine, and an accomplished nationally recognized model. Modeling was the money maker, but music was always her calling when Demimonde, the pop act brainchild of Shuki Levy (Saban Entertainment) came to life and recruited Shannon to join the group. From there, she recorded with the three girl country bar band Sweet Water Junction, and then met renowned producer and musician Marty Rifkin (Bruce Springsteen, Glen Cambell, Leanne Rhimes) who co-wrote some of her earliest songs. In the past few years Shannon has been collaborating with songwriter, producer, and band mate Dave Polich, while touring throughout the southwest in a very successful tribute band. Together, they have co-written an impressive catalog of Country Rock-Americana songs. With original style and direction, Shannon’s brand of country music influenced by such icons as Linda Ronstadt, Trisha Yearwood, Sheryl Crow, Wynonna, and Reba McEntire gained the attention of Michael Vail Blum from Los Angeles based record company Music Master Exchange, who signed Shannon to a recording contract saying, “Shannon has a unique, stand out tone that really delivers on this fantastic collection of Americana tunes”. The release of Shannon Rae, takes her career to the next level as a seasoned singer and performer at the peak of her talents. The 14 cuts on the album are an eclectic mix of up-tempo, mid-tempo and ballads, inspired by life, love, heartbreak and fun.
