Kimberly Schlapman, a founding member of the band Little Big Town, has been a musician almost all her life. As a little girl she played piano alongside her mother at a Baptist church near where she grew up in Cornelia, Georgia, and even then people knew her voice was something special. Years later, on a choir camp bus when she was at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, she met Karen Fairchild, her future bandmate—and the rest is country music history. But Kimberly has also made her mark as a cookbook author, a TV show host, and a passionate fan of Southern food, and she's always found a creative outlet in the kitchen. In this episode, she shares how she's been handling her mother's struggle with Parkinson's disease. She also talks with Sid about the upcoming Little Big Town 25th Anniversary Tour with Sugarland, her divided allegiance between Tennessee and Georgia football, and why she loves songs about whiskey. Little Big Town is celebrating more than 20 years as a band with the release their 10th studio album, Mr. Sun, available September 16. Ahead of the album's release, the band's Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Philip Sweet and Jimi Westbrook joined Audacy's Rob + Holly to chat new music and how the four have managed to stick together for over two decades. “It feels like just yesterday we were driving ourselves around in our own van and loading up our own merch,” Schlapman said, reflecting on the early days of their career. “And then it does feel like forever,” she laughed. “We have a forever story and it's been twenty-something years long.” The band has celebrated the release of 27 singles together and they credit “patience, understanding, grace and respect,” for getting them through all the ups and downs. “We built this whole thing, from the foundation up, with it being about the band,” said Westbrook. “A lot of times… it can be easy for your egos to get in the way.” Their approach to focus on the quartet as a whole has also proven successful as the group's earned numerous award nominations including their most recent in the Vocal Group of the Year category for the 2022 CMA Awards. The always-positive clan is readying to release their 10th studio album, Mr.Sun on September 16 and according to them — it'll give you all the positive vibes, just as the title suggests. “[Positivity] was definitely the intention,” said Fairchild. “Especially coming out of Nightfall, the last record, were were holding on to a few songs that didn't seem to fit that body of work.” She continued “I think during the pandemic we all needed something to look forward to, you know? So this is the sunnier side of the street!” Grab your sunglasses! The LBT talent is sure to shine bright on this project! Check it out September 16.

There are few people sweeter than Little Big Town's Kimberly Schlapman. She absolutely exudes kindness. Kimberly has been through a lot of grief in her life. She lost her first husband to a heart attack and a brother-in-law to a motorcycle accident. She recently talked about infertility and miscarriages she says were previously "a secret" to almost everyone. None of these things could steal her joy. Kimberly's first children's book "A Dolly For Christmas" is out now. It's the adoption story of her daughter "Dolly" as told through her daughter Daisy's eyes. Kimberly says it was a real-life Christmas miracle and she hopes it will inspire kids and adults to never give up hope. #kimberlyschlapman #littlebigtown #countrymusic #LBT #dollyforchristmas

Not all female voices in country music come from solo artists. Little Big Town’s four-pronged power comes in equal measures from both Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman as well as Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet. Lady Antebellum soars with the combination of Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood. Maddie Marlow and Tae Dye of Maddie & Tae are best friends, a sound that is almost palpable in their harmonies. In this week’s episode, I sit down with Thompson Square’s Shawna Thompson, who teamed with her husband, Keifer, to form their award-winning duo almost a decade ago (they’ve been married for 18 years). I wanted to find out if Shawna’s experience as a woman in country music has been different since she’s had her guy by her side. We find that out and so much more as we feature Shawna during this week’s Women Want to Hear Women Podcast. We even get some perspective from her husband. I hope you enjoy the podcast, and be sure to check out the videos of Thompson Square as they “Play It Forward” with a cover of Faith Hill’s “It Matters to Me,” as well as their new song, “Breakers.” Shawna also helps me curate this week’s WWTHW playlist.
