Recorded Jan. 12, 2025 Four games to cover......four games that were, at times, difficult to endure given what we Caps fans have gotten used to. But as they say they road is long and the season is a marathon and not a sprint, Anna and I break down the four games as only we can. We also offer our critique of the team's recent play and what might get them back to.....a more consistent line of results. However before we begin, we give our attention to the recent tragedy in the Los Angeles area. We both have people there who have been affected at least in some way.And in their case, yes the road is even tougher and longer. Do what you can to make it easier on them by donating to the American Red Cross today. Also we speak about our beloved Color Commentator, Craig Laughlin and his recent health issues. He has his own road to recovery he must travel. Send him your most positive vibes and be sure to wish him well. Something else that will do his heart good is a donation to The Laughlin Family Foundation to support research for rare cancers. And to anyone else facing their own challenges early in this New Year....the road may be long, but let this serve as a reminder that you're not alone. We're a community. A family unto our own. There is a way home. If you are a Caps fan you are already here. #ALLCAPS #SportsOTHP #JenayaTalksCaps #Sucram'sCapitalsOfftheChainPodcast #TheOfficialCapsChirpPodcast #LockedOnCapitals #PowerplayPointPodcast
Every phase was firing on all cylinders for Ohio State in the Rose Bowl rematch with Oregon, which wasn't even as close as the final score indicated in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal. The Buckeyes have been dominant on defense in the postseason, Jeremiah Smith is still doing special work on offense and even the special teams delivered as the top-seeded Ducks got crushed. On a rare Friday edition of the Boren Blitz on THE Podcast Daily, former Ohio State captain Zach Boren breaks it all down and peeks ahead at what's next for the program.

Send us a Text Message.Mets closer Edwin Diaz got himself suspended for 10 games for having too much rosin and legal goop on his hand a week ago Sunday. The roster spot cannot be filled so the Mets will play short for 10 games. PED violations that result in a player suspension do not impact filling the roster spot the next day. Does that make ANY sense? Wild card race in the NL is nuts with 9 teams having 40-45 losses and all vying for the 2nd and 3rd Wild Card. What's wrong with the Cubs? Why are they currently in last place? Are the Rangers toast? Will Jacob DeGrom ever pitch for them? Seems like forever that he's been injured. Today we have another story from LA On The Margins, the collection of stories produced by students at USC where every episode we profile an Angeleno struggling in some way to make it in this city. This time, a transition home that aims to help those who've struggled with their mental health and/or a history of addiction. For years, LA county has funded programs to address cycles of incarceration and homelessness that often affect those suffering from mental illness and substance abuse. People would go from one institution —say a jail — right into another, usually with few results. Reporter Kira Brenner takes us somewhere different: a place that mixed counselors, therapists, and enrichment opportunities – like art classes – into something that would feel more like a home. Take a listen.

This week my guests are Northern California based musical duo Misner & Smith. Sam, who is Misner, and Megan, who is Smith comprise one of the most acclaimed acts in the Americana world. Blending elements of that genre with bluegrass, traditional folk ballads, and more pop leaning ideas, they've been described as making music that is gloriously nonconforming. Aside from their musical chops, Sam & Megan are expert gardeners who focus on pollinators, sustainability and community gardening. Listen on to find out how their connection to nature feeds into their music. What We Talk About Sam & Megan's gardening backgrounds Gardening sustainably and for the community Gardening as a creative outlet? How gardening inspires when you are looking for creative prompts How gardening factors into their music? The garden soundscape About Misner & Smith Northern California based unclassifiable duo Misner & Smith treasure the unpredictability of their band. Technically precise songwriting mirrored with an improvisatory spirit and soaring harmonies have made the band consisting of Sam Misner and Megan Smith one of the most acclaimed acts in the Americana world. Blending elements of that genre with bluegrass, traditional folk ballads, and more pop leaning ideas, Misner & Smith makes music gloriously nonconforming. The duo first met at a Shakespeare festival as professional actors in California in 2002 but began working as a musical duo two years later when Sam and Megan discovered a mutual love of roots music, Woody Guthrie, and in particular, harmony singing. Before the release of their career defining sixth LP ALL IS SONG, the duo had released five critically acclaimed records, including Halfway Home (2004), Poor Player (2008), Live at the Freight & Salvage (2010), Seven Hour Storm (2013), and headwaters (2017). It was that 2017 release that found the group stripping their sound back down to where it began, two voices and two instruments. headwaters was recorded live in the studio and features the duo doing what they do best. On ALL IS SONG, they build upon that momentum and turn in their finest work to date, an album of inspired declarations to the power of music, song, and, most importantly, collaboration. www.misnerandsmith.com YouTube Other episodes if you liked this one: Natural Fibres - This week's guest is multi-media artist Hanna Varga. Hanna incorporates the natural world into her work and her current projects involve foraging for fibres she turns into both useful and beautiful items. Soundscapes & Landscapes - This week I'm speaking to Dr Mike Edwards, Chief Listening Officer at Sound Matters, a company focussed on using sound and listening to create more sustainable and resilient futures. Sound Matters provided the soundtrack to the Rewilding Britain garden that one best in show at this year's Chelsea Flower Show. Pleased as punch to have had Kirstie Lynn join me for Episode No. 106 of Badass Records, and I'm just as excited to have you check out our conversation.I ran into Kirstie in the ol' downtownage, and -- before I knew it -- we were swapping e-mail messages in order to get this chat on the books. She's a classically trained opera singer, a songwriter, a musician, a live-music performer, a veteran of the gigging road, and -- if my two hours with her are a good measuring stick -- she's one heck of a fascinating human being. One might even go so far as to say wonderful. We talked about the east coast, continuing education, opportunities, family and friends, relationships, and so much more. We also took a peek at a few of her favorite records, which were these:Ladies of the Canyon (1970), Joni MitchellAngel Olsen's Halfway Home (2012)Bury Me at Makeout Creek (2014), MitskiBig Thief's Masterpiece (2016)Nothing for Me, Please (2023), Dean JohnsonPlease check out Kirstie's array of musical offerings at kirstielynn.com. FRIIIIDAAAYYY CLOSE! As we wrap up the first half of 2023 we're looking back as we talk about the next round of EV standard moves. We also talk about the retail level reception of Costco's latest crackdown on sharing memberships. As the mass adoption of Tesla's NACS charging standard has been dominating the news, the transition isn't quite as simple as you may think. Yesterday EV maker Polestar and EV motorcycle maker Verge Motorcycles announce a shift to the Tesla standardElectrify America, the largest competitor to Tesla's Supercharger network, which is majority owned by VW announced they will be adding Tesla's NACS standard to all of their almost 3,500 fast chargers by 2025 in addition to continuing to offer the current CCS standardChallenges include: Onboard software development, hardware design, incompatibility with current charging systems, charge port position, differences in charging speed, use of adapters, manufacturing modificationsTesla chargers don't have a screen and have a seamless handshakeAll Tesla charge ports are on the left rearPins in the harnesses serve different purposesTesla said in a statement: "It's always been our ambition to open the Supercharger network to non-Tesla EVs, and by doing so, encourage more drivers to go electric. More customers using the Supercharger network enables faster expansion. Our goal is to learn and iterate quickly, while continuing to aggressively expand the network, so we can eventually welcome both Tesla and non-Tesla drivers at every Supercharger worldwide."Costco has intensified the enforcement of its membership policy, with employees frequently asking to see shoppers' membership IDs with their photo at the self-checkout lanes drawing both cheers and jeersThe company noticed an increase in card sharing when they introduced self checkout lanes last yearCostco makes the majority of it's profits from membership feesChief financial officer Richard Galanti said during Costco's May 25 earnings call that at “some point we will” raise rates and cited inflation as a reason for waiting. “Our view right now is that we've got enough levers out there to drive business and we feel that it's incumbent upon us to be that beacon of light to our members in terms of holding them for right now,” Galanti said."I pay extra to shop somewhere to get the good prices," said Lisa Ladonski, another Illinois shopper. "It's not fair for multiple people to use one membership because let's say they all want to buy the same thing I do, they get to it and buy it and now I can't get what I need because they're taking advantage of the system."Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

This week's guest is the remarkable social scientist and author, Reuben Jonathan Miller. His book, "Halfway Home," is a powerful and insightful examination of the American criminal justice system. Drawing on his own experiences as a researcher and advocate for criminal justice reform, Miller brings a unique perspective to the conversation about the complexities of incarceration and re-entry. His writing is engaging, thought-provoking, and, above all, deeply human, reminding us that those who have been incarcerated are more than just statistics or labels; they are individuals with their own stories, struggles, and aspirations.
Pastor Courtney shares stories of the long walk of Lent, encouragement for the journey, and reminders that it isn't about perfection but grace.

I've always thought this cool instrumental by Tommy Emmanuel would lend itself to banjo, so this is what I came up with. Starting from scratch last Friday and over the weekend, I finally settled on this adaptation of the tune. Tommy does this tune in different keys, and it's easy to find examples of him playing this in D, Eb, E, F, and G, depending on where he puts his capo. I decided on D to grab the lowest note on the banjo. I rendered an MP3 of my tab, to full speed of ~130 bpm, about where Tommy plays it. For what it's worth, I hope someone gets something from this. Reference recording for the tab posted--view here.

Goofy is fun. Goofy is great. But seems to us that sometimes you just gotta slow everything down and do a picture book that's a little more serious. We had to go meaningful this week and what could be more meaningful than a little drop of Allen Say?. That doesn't mean we don't have time to also talk about a yard full of 12-foot-skeletons, of course. We contain multitudes. Show Notes: - You can read Betsy's 100 Picture Books for Kids Poll write-up of this title (at #46) here: https://afuse8production.slj.com/2012/05/29/top-100-picture-books-46-grandfathers-journey-by-allen-say/ - For the record, Allan Say as a child ran into Lois Lowry though they never exchanged a word. It was only years later that they discovered that they'd seen one another all those years ago.
