Moonlight Mile proudly and intentionally is a reality check for mainstream country and fedora-wearing folk country hipster posers alike. Moonlight Mile is a voice for those many impoverished and destitute in rural Appalachia, gripped by the sting of addiction, brow-beaten by fanatical religiosity, and oppressed by fascist regimes. An Americana bluegrass band from Sandy Hook, Kentucky, they're forging a sound that blends Appalachi-an roots with modern storytelling and heartfelt grit. Formed in 2021 and fronted by songwriter and vocalist Jonathan Pennington, the group draws on the deep musical heritage of Eastern Kentucky while embracing a wide range of influences—from traditional bluegrass harmonies to the alternative rock and psychedelic sounds that shaped Pennington's upbringing.Born of long summer evenings and back-road reflections, Moonlight Mile's music speaks to life in rural Appalachia: the beauty and struggle, the pride and pain. They write with an honest voice and a sense of purpose, tackling themes like community, hardship, and resilience with songs that feel both personal and universal. Their work has shared stages with artists across the Americana and country spectrum, including Wynonna Judd, Dwight Yoakam, The Infamous Stringdusters, and 49 Winchester—a testament to the band's wide appeal and deep musical roots. With releases that include the Kentucky Bourbon EP and tracks like “Honey,” Moonlight Mile showcases rich instrumentation—banjo, fiddle, and guitar weaving through stories caught between past and present. Their first full-length album captivates listeners with authentic narratives grounded in the landscapes and legacies of Appalachia.Whether on festival stages or intimate venues, Moonlight Mile brings a fresh voice to Kentucky's storied musical tradition—one that honors the past while charting a course into the future of Americana and blue-grass.

What does it actually take to land a gig with a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band? Eric Baines — multi-instrumentalist, producer, touring musician, and podcaster — breaks it all down on this episode of Cover Band Confidential.Eric is currently the bass player for the legendary band Chicago, but the road to that stage ran through Berklee College of Music, the chaotic LA wedding circuit, celebrity gigs with David Foster and Babyface, and — yes — Disneyland's Mad Tea Party show. This is a masterclass in what it really looks like to build a professional music career from the ground up.We dig into the wild realities of LA wedding band life, how playing 200+ nights a year sharpens your musicianship, what working inside the Disney machine teaches you about performance energy, and how word-of-mouth networking (and never burning bridges) ultimately led Eric to Dwight Yoakam and then to Chicago. He also gets real about what it felt like to get "the call," the decision-making process when you already have a steady gig and a new baby at home, and what his first night on stage with Chicago was actually like.If you're a working musician, a touring artist, or anyone trying to build a sustainable career in music, this episode is packed with honest, practical wisdom.

Is Panic Room just Home Alone For Adults? David Fincher's 2002 home invasion thriller is sharper, darker, and weirder than you remember — and this week we're breaking down every inch of it. Brian, John, and returning guest Anastasia Elfman revisit one of the most underrated thrillers of the early 2000s. They cover Fincher's Hitchcockian direction, those impossibly fluid CGI camera moves, and the film's relentless tension-building — plus everything the IMDb synopsis conveniently left out. On the table this week: whether Jared Leto's cornrow-sporting Junior ruins the film or serves it (the panel is divided), why Forest Whitaker's Burnham is the most sympathetic criminal in cinema history, and why Dwight Yoakam's Raul was robbed of an Oscar. They also dig into the bearer bonds MacGuffin — yes, whoever physically holds them legally owns them, robbery be damned — and unpack the wild behind-the-scenes story of Nicole Kidman's knee injury, Jodie Foster filming while pregnant, and how Kristen Stewart ended up in the role that was originally cast very differently. Plus: diabetes as the fourth villain of Panic Room, the Home Alone propane explosion comparison, and what you would actually do if the cops showed up at your door while armed criminals watched you on camera. The episode closes with a tease of Cinema Psycho Show's 10th anniversary special — Brian and John are fixing Batman Forever. You heard that right. Only a small slice of podcasts ever makes it to 100 episodes, so we wanted this one to feel like a real toast, not a victory lap. We talk honestly about how Try That in a Small Town started, why it mattered to us, and what it still means when the world tries to turn a simple message into something else. The heart of it is still the same: look out for your neighbor, stand up for people who can't defend themselves, and don't forget where you came from.We also rewind through the messy behind-the-scenes stuff that comes with building a weekly show while living in the music business, from our early “phone on the table” pilot to the deals that almost happened and the grind that never really turns off. If you've ever felt like your job follows you home, you'll understand this conversation about sacrifice, pressure, and why a great song can still light you back up.Then we have some fun with a question that instantly exposes every country fan's bias: the Mount Rushmore of male country singers. Dwight Yoakam, George Strait, Randy Travis, Waylon, Hank Jr., Garth, Morgan Wallen and more get name-checked, argued over, and defended like it's a barroom court case. We wrap by sharing what we've learned about each other over 100 episodes, shouting out a listener story of the week, and thanking the people who've kept the lights on, including Patriot Mobile, eSpaces, Peacemaker Coffee, and Original Glory. Back in the Tin Pan Alley (and Brill Building) days there were song-pluggers, and there were vocalists, and never the twain met, but this symbiotic relationship formed the successful division of labor for the great American capitalist record business. Whether they be based in NY, LA, or Nashville successful songwriters rarely had hits recording their own material. Hard to believe that it took Willie Nelson so many years to be recognized as his own best interpreter. Of course, that now seems ludicrous, given Willie's status as “national treasure”.  Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra and the like had their go-to writers and arrangers, Phil Spector, Don Kirschner and others kept their stable of regular creatives like Carole King and Gerry Goffin in little cubicles laboring to churn out dozens of standards weekly for their employer's contracted recording artists.  But, just like any actor worth his salt in Hollywood will tell you: “without good writing, you ain't got shit”Two of Country Music's most covered songwriters are being honored here today, singing for you in their own voices: Guy Clark, doing “That Old Time Feeling”, and Harlan Howard performing “Heartaches by the Number.” These are craftsmen, whose practical, raw boned approach to their art yielded glittering treasures. HARLAND HOWARD (1927-2002)Harland Howard wrote over 4000 songs, 100 of which made the top ten Country charts. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters and Country Music Halls of Fame. There are tribute albums of his songs by Buck Owens, Waylon Jennings and Wille Nelson. He wrote I Fall to Pieces for Patsy Cline, Busted, made famous by Ray Charles, and the monster hit - I got a Tiger by the Tail for Buck Owens. Here he is singing Heartaches by the Number, which a cursory dip into YouTube reveals covers by Ray Price, Dwight Yoakam, Guy Mitchell, Leon Russell, Paul Carrack and Kitty Wells, among others. There are no frills here, but I contend that hearing the voice of the man who created the song is a more personal experience, like someone reading you their diary.GUY CLARK (1941-2016)The ultimate example of an unsung (pun intended) man of influence is “Old No. 1,” the luthier's luthier, Guy Clark. His Texas home-workshop was the Austin epicenter of the Outlaw Country Movement that transformed Country Music. Watch the scene from the documentary Heartworn HIghway with Steve Earle and Rodney Crowell sitting around Guy's kitchen table, trading songs. Townes Van Zandt may have been the most elusive doomed romantic poet of that group, but it was Guy they studied with and trusted - the one they could depend on, the Zen Master of song. And, what songs! They are like short stories, full of vivid characters, evocative dialogue, and carefully observed detail. Songs like Desperadoes Waiting for a Train, L.A. Freeway, My Favorite Picture of You (for his late wife Susanna - the magnetic beauty patiently putting up with the Outlaw's shenanigans). Today, he favors us with That Old Time Feeling, a tune that insinuates itself into your consciousness through a stream of unforgettable images.

Why I Needed a Baritone Telecaster Guitar

Baritone electric guitars live in that perfect middle ground between standard guitar and bass, and once you understand what they do best, it's hard to live without one.In this video, I'm diving into baritone guitars, why a typical 27” scale baritone is very different from a Bass VI (usually 29–30” scale), and how each one functions in a band context. While they can look similar at first glance, they play, feel, and sit in a mix very differently.I also talk about classic effects choices for baritone, especially tremolo and vibrato, and why those sounds pair so perfectly with the baritone's extended range and piano-like low end.A huge influence for me was Pete Anderson, particularly his baritone work with Dwight Yoakam on tracks like “Little Ways” and "Buenos Noches From a Lonely Room." Seeing Pete on Austin City Limits in 1989, playing a baritone Telecaster, impacted me as a young player, as it was the first time I really understood how powerful a baritone could be in country music.Fast-forward to touring with Brad Paisley, I was using a Bass VI on “Whiskey Lullaby”, but quickly realized it wasn't quite right. Brad played a baritone on the original recording, and once you hear that, you can't un-hear it. That experience really cemented the difference for me between the two instruments and when each one truly shines.I also break down my personal baritone guitar, which is a bit of a Frankenstein in the best way possible:Allparts baritone conversion neckMusic City Bridge saddlesKiller Vintage and Adder pickupsCustom Emerson wiring harness, with the tone control only on the bridge pickupMJT pine bodyA one-of-a-kind blue burst finish and relic paint job done by Brad Paisley himselfThe final piece of the puzzle was the nut, fretwork, and setup, expertly handled by Aaron, Nick, and Max at Glaser Instruments, who absolutely nailed the feel and playability. If you've ever wondered whether a baritone is right for you, how it differs from a Bass VI, or how players like Pete Anderson and Brad Paisley have used them so effectively, this one's for you.www.truetone.comTo Support the Channel:Patreon  https://www.patreon.com/AskZachttps://ask-zac-shop.fourthwall.comTip jar:  https://paypal.me/AskZacVenmo @AskZacSupport the show

It's 2026, Slackers! This episode kicks off with the usual New Year's Eve roundup - flipping between Dick Clark's countdown and the Nashville show, while my daughter belts out every word to today's country hits but shrugs off Dwight Yoakam like he's ancient history. My oldest came home early from Boston's First Night, which is basically a senior-citizen version of Times Square. We toasted anyway with sparkling grape juice and cider, all together before midnight, even if he wasn't home for the Stranger Things finale. Quick side note on Stranger Things: those classic 80s kid movies - Goonies, Stand by Me, Lost Boys, even Stephen King's IT—the kids always make it home safe, no matter the adventure. Stranger Things has always been an homage to those stories - something online critics should keep in mind. The main part of the show is all about those old-school variety shows from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, the ones that packed everything into one hour: comedy sketches, big musical numbers, dancers, surprise guests, the whole deal. Back then, a major star or family would anchor the night and give you this glorious mix of entertainment. Simpler times. The Carol Burnett Show is the gold standard - those wild characters, the way she'd lose it laughing with Tim Conway or Harvey Korman, the bits that still crack me up thinking about them. My personal favorites were the Mandrell Sisters! A little steel guitar, a little fiddle, and plenty of comedy, what's not to love?As the years went on, things started to change: music drifted off to MTV, comedy got sharper (meaner?) on SNL, and the talent-search format took over with shows like the original Star Search. It's a fun walk through when television variety meant anything could happen on any given week.

Most musicians would only dream of opening for Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin on tour but for Rosie Flores the dream came true! Rosie drops by The City's Backyard Podcast on this episode to talk about her music, career, and new album called Impossible Frontiers with her band The Talismen! Plus she speaks about what it's like to be on the road opening for Robert Plant with Saving Grace and Suzi Dian.Rosie Flores, triple-threat Texas musician, has never allowed the challenge of navigating the male-centric worlds of rock and country music slow her down. In fact, she often drew upon those challenges as source material in sharply observed songs she not only wrote and sang with authority and passion, but also brought to life musically as a widely respected lead guitarist in a string of notable bands.Rosie is one of the 2024 NEA National Heritage Fellows! In September 2024 she accepted her gold medal award at the Library Of Congress, appearing at the Kennedy Center as well as the White House. A daughter of San Antonio whose musical journey also has included quality time in Austin, Los Angeles, and Nashville, Flores has adroitly absorbed, helped preserve, and extended the musical legacies of influential Texas musicians as varied as country music's King of Western Swing Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys, blues guitar master T-Bone Walker, and Tex Mex innovator Doug Sahm.In the 1970s, she became one of the most celebrated performers on the “cowpunk” circuit (a hybrid of punk rock and country), alongside such other rising stars as Dwight Yoakam, Lucinda Williams, Rank & File, and Los Lobos (2021 NEA National Heritage Fellows). The release of her 1987 debut solo album Rosie Flores proved her to be a singer and songwriter of the first rank, and helped lay the foundation for what coalesced into the alt country movement.Flores became the first Latina to crack Billboard's country music chart. For her enthusiastic participation in and ongoing promotion of Austin's deep and wide music scene, including the annual South by Southwest Conference, the city has proclaimed Rosie Flores Day in 2006.Flores has remained a spark plug live performer for more than five decades, a goosebump-inducing electric guitarist and songwriter as well as champion of the trailblazers who preceded her. Notably, she lured pioneering rockabilly heroines Wanda Jackson (2005 NEA National Heritage Fellow) and Janis Martin (“the female Elvis”) back into recording studios and onto concert stages for lauded late-career rejuvenations. Flores won a 2007 Peabody Award for her narration of the NPR rockabilly documentary, Whole Lotta Shakin'.For more on Rosie and her tour click here > https://rosieflores.com/tour/

Americana music enthusiasts and concert-goers are constantly in search of the “next big thing.” We all want to be in on the ground floor of watching and artist's rise to fame so we can say we were a fan from “the beginning.” Whether it's seeing Tyler Childers with 20 other people at a dive bar in 2017 or standing next to Wyatt Flores at Laurel Cove watching Jesse Wells play, the undiscovered are always discovered by those who remember running into them along the way. On more than one occasion in the last six months, the “next big thing” label has been said in the same sentence with Emily Jamerson. The younger sister of Sundy Best founder and underground country godfather Nicholas Jamerson, Emily has emerged with songs and stories as moving and thoughtful as her brother's. She has yet to record a full album, but a strong set of singles and some live sessions have made their way to the streaming services. They're consistently good with each new one revealing more of the Prestonsburg, Ky., native's promise. Emily Jamerson joined Jason Falls for an interview with Roots Music Rambler back in late September. Since that time she has continued to build a strong road presence, expanding to a full band for many shows, and her duet with her older brother, “Sunday Dinners” (which she talks about in the interview) started getting radio play. It's on Nicholas's latest album, The Narrow Way. Emily shared more reflections on growing up in the Jamerson household to compliment her older brother's stories he shared with us back in the summer. She also shared the formal and informal advice and encouragement Nicholas has provided along the way, including a book (Michael Singer's The Surrender Experiment), he gave her that helped push past self-doubt and finally write and share her music. And we talked about and listened to some of her latest music like ”Dried Paint” and “Run, Run Baby.” Frank and Falls also chatted about Christmas plans and traditions, plus each shared their Pickin' the Grinnin' pics for recommended music this week. Frank kept with the holiday theme and shared the music of Ottmar Leibert, whose 1990 album Poets & Angels is one of her favorites for this time of year. Falls calls out upstart honky-tonkers Jason Scott & The High Heat who he saw open for The Mavericks and Dwight Yoakam last April.  Watch the Episode on YouTube Download the episode and subscribe at rootsmusicrambler.com, watch the full episode on YouTube, or download wherever you get your podcasts.  Also be sure to help spread the love of the show with Roots Music Rambler's new merch, now available at rootsmusicrambler.com/store. A hummingbird at a window. Santa Ana winds rattling the night. A promise to Vince Gill that forced the album to finally exist. Our conversation with Annie Bosco traces the real road behind California Cowgirl, a 19-song debut forged from writer's rooms, wildfire skies, and the stubborn belief that the right song shows up when you keep showing up.We talk about the Malibu retreat that sparked a creative streak—Tequila Time, Country Girls Who Runs The World, Bright And Blue Sky, Maliblue—written with bags packed in case the hillside burned. Annie explains how collaborations took shape through brave asks and long-built relationships: Vince Gill, Raul Malo, Dwight Yoakam, and Amy Grant. God Winks becomes the emotional anchor, born from family language for life's quiet green lights and strengthened by stories that make small miracles feel close. Hearing Annie share lines and context connects the dots between hook craft and heart craft, between a clever turn and a lyric that lingers.California Cowgirl isn't a coastal caricature; it's a farmer's daughter with Bakersfield roots and Nashville mileage, embracing authenticity after years of trying to fit a mold. We dig into the changing city—fewer chance meetings on Music Row, more digital noise—and pull out practical advice: treat rejection like weather, keep writing, and let identity lead strategy. Annie opens up about recent milestones—festival stages, a top 40 moment, a national brand campaign, even an upcoming date opening for Dolly Parton—and the winter plan to turn the faucet on full for new songs. If you care about the story behind the song, the resilience behind the voice, and the craft behind a debut that actually has miles on it, you'll feel at home here. Hit play, share with a friend who needs a push to stay authentic, and if this conversation moves you, subscribe, leave a review, and tell us which track or lyric stayed with you.

Catching up with Annie Bosko after 20 years felt like picking up the same honest, fiery conversations we’ve always had—about life, faith, resilience, and finding your way. She’s still the California cowgirl with a backbone of steel and a heart wide open. Her debut album California Cowgirl shows that spirit in full force, with standout tracks like the Haggard-inspired “Bright and Blue Sky,” the tough-love jolt of “Cowboy Up,” and powerhouse collabs with Dwight Yoakam, Joe Nichols, and Darius Rucker. At the center of it? Love God. Love People. And Cowboy Up when life gets real.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

My Music with Graham Coath — Anna May (not Anime!)This week Graham sits down with Anna May — Connecticut-born, sometimes-San Diego-based singer–songwriter — for a wide-ranging conversation about voice, vulnerability and finding your lane when you don't fit neatly into one genre. Anna grew up on a diet of female storytellers (Natalie Merchant, Tori Amos, Alanis Morissette), 90s alt, dad's country (The Mavericks, Dwight Yoakam) and a childhood of jazz rooms—and it all threads through her work. She talks candidly about writing lyrics first (often as poems), letting the voice improvise live so no song lands the same way twice, and recording one-take magic with engineer Steve Rizzo in Rhode Island. We touch on k.d. lang (“Constant Craving”, “The Air That I Breathe”), unexpected covers (yes, Ozzy Osbourne), social media's darker edges, boundaries, and how a bruising breakup became a healing body of songs. There's even a New England vs California detour, a Billy Bragg nod, and a Groove Armada truth bomb: “If everybody looked the same, we'd get tired of looking at each other.”

What actually earns a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame—longevity, hits, or the kind of influence that changes what country sounds like? We dig into the real criteria and test the hype with a clear-eyed look at names like Alison Krauss, Brad Paisley, Crystal Gayle, Dwight Yoakam, Faith Hill, and more. Some feel overdue, others feel inevitable, and a few favorites might benefit from time cooking into legacy. With only three inductees selected each year across rotating categories, the bar isn't just high—it's selective by design. From there, we zoom out to what's shaping country now. Kenny Chesney's high-tech Sphere dates raise the production ceiling, George Strait's long-awaited stadium return brings tradition back to center stage, and Chris Young's new label era hints at a refreshed voice with deeper songwriting. We swap stories about artist rivalries, the power of small-venue touring, and how TV platforms keep catalog songs alive with surprising new performances. We also spotlight rising talent like Brian Fuller and revisit the studio lineage that built the modern sound—John and Martina McBride's Blackbird Studios, Tony Brown's classic touch, and Dan Huff's guitar-forward polish. Then we put our money where our mouth is: can AI co-write and produce a track that stands up to human-made? We fed it detailed direction—anthemic chorus, dynamic bridge, specific drum feel, vocal phrasing, even the final held note and guitar tag—and got a shockingly usable demo. It still can't replace a seasoned session leader's judgment or the nuance of live players, but as a demo engine for indie artists, it's a game-changer. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2017 conversation with Jimmy Webb. ABOUT JIMMY WEBBJimmy Webb emerged as a superstar songwriter and arranger in 1967 when two of his songs – The 5th Dimension's “Up, Up and Away” and Glen Campbell's “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” - were among the five nominees for the Grammy's Song of the Year award. He went on to write a string of major hits for Campbell, including “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston,” "Where's the Playground Susie,” “Honey Come Back,” and many others. Additionally, he penned “MacArthur Park,” which was a hit for a diverse range of artists, including Richard Harris, Waylon Jennings, Tony Bennett, Andy Williams, and Donna Summer; “The Worst That Could Happen,” which was a Top 5 hit for The Brooklyn Bridge; “Didn't We,” which was recorded by Thelma Houston, Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, and Barbra Streisand; “All I Know,” which became a Top 10 hit for Art Garfunkel; “The Moon's a Harsh Mistress,” which has been recorded by Joe Cocker, Judy Collins, Linda Ronstadt, and Josh Groban; and “If These Walls Could Speak,” which was recorded by Glen Campbell, Amy Grant, Nanci Griffith, and Shawn Colvin. Others who've covered material from the Jimmy Webb songbook include Diana Ross, Dusty Springfield, Nina Simone, The Four Tops, Roberta Flack, The Temptations, The Association, Tom Jones, Dionne Warwick, Cass Elliot, Harry Nilsson, Nancy Wilson, Cher, Bob Dylan, The Everly Brothers, Nick Cave, John Denver, Kenny Rogers, Sheena Easton, David Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Michael Feinstein, R.E.M., Aimee Mann, America, Aretha Franklin, Isaac Hayes, Peggy Lee, Bette Midler, James Taylor, Carrie Underwood, Dwight Yoakam, and The Highwaymen (consisting of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson), who took Jimmy's song “Highwayman” to #1, earning him a Grammy for Country Song of the Year. As an artist, he has released more than a dozen albums. One of the most celebrated songwriters on the planet, Jimmy is the only individual to win Grammy awards for music, lyrics, and orchestration. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame. Additionally, he has received ASCAP's Lifetime Achievement Award, the Influential Songwriter Award from the National Music Publishers Association, and the Academy of Country Music's prestigious Poets Award. In 2015 he was named among Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. Jimmy's memoir, The Cake and the Rain, details his formative years and early career through 1973. It's available now from St. Martin's Press.
