We're back! After over a month away due to technical issues, the Unsung Podcast has returned with an explosive new episode on metalcore pioneers Poison the Well and their 2003 album 'You Come Before You.' Joining Chris and Mark for the first time in many months is Dave, who chose Poison the Well as his band for the episode. Hailing from Florida, Poison the Well helped define the metalcore genre in the early 2000s with their blend of hardcore punk and extreme metal. Albums like 1999's 'The Opposite of December' and 2002's 'Tear From the Red' built them a cult following. But it's their third album, 'You Come Before You,' that Dave considers their unsung classic. Recorded with producers who had previously worked with Refused, the album shows Poison the Well branching into more melodic territory even as the riffs become heavier. With nods to bands like Deftones and Cave In, it expanded the boundaries of what metalcore could be. The episode explores Poison the Well's entire career, analysing how they evolved from their raw early material into a more ambitious band on 'You Comes Before You' and subsequent releases. Though not all fans appreciated their change in direction, Dave makes the case for why their third album struck the perfect balance and deserves classic status. Tune in now to hear the full discussion and analysis of why Poison the Well's 'You Come Before You' is an unsung classic!

Evanna Lynch chats to Clare McKenna about her powerful new memoir 'The Opposite of Butterfly Hunting'
On this week's episode, long time friend of the show Evanna Lynch joins us to discuss her new book, The Opposite of Butterfly Hunting. She talks about the challenges in writing her memoir and the hosts ask her about her experiences as a newly published author. Her book chronicles a struggle with mental illness and an eating disorder, as well as her correspondence with JK Rowling via letters, years before she was cast as Luna Lovegood. Evanna was kind to answer all of our questions and give us her time. This is one episode you won't want to miss! Evanna Lynch returns to MuggleCast, a newly published author! Her book, The Opposite of Butterfly Hunting is a deeply moving, at times comical and mostly challenging tale of her struggles with an eating disorder while she was growing up. The hosts take turns asking Evanna questions both about her book, and some of the surprising stories found within. Evanna details why she was inspired to write Butterfly Hunting... and how she managed to remember so many details from when she was eleven. What lessons and messages can readers hope to get from the book? Laura asks Evanna what she would say to her younger self, and Evanna replies gravely and honestly. The interview touches on Evanna's early correspondence with J.K. Rowling via letter. What made her reach out? The reasons Evanna is connected to the character of Luna. Evanna recounts her transition from everyday Harry Potter super-fan to friend and colleague of the cast, and how strange it was to get used to. Finally, what does the title of the book mean? And how did becoming a vegan change Evanna's way of seeing the world? MuggleCast recently was on Evanna's The ChickPeeps podcast, and we had a great time. Evanna leaves us with a story of walking into bookstores to sign copies of her book, and what it was like to record the audiobook. Quizzitch: What is Aragog's wife's name?? Submit your answer! I have never been one to want to pay my boys for doing their chores. I always considered it as a part of 'earning their keep'. However, I have heard of some parents who do pay their children money for doing household chores. At the time of me writing this, 36% of people polled said the do pay their children for doing chores while the other 64% said, 'Heck No!'. Some also gave incredibly valid reasons. Take a listen and offer your perspective as well. Listen. Enjoy. Share. Fund. Repeat. Notes: Produced by dijondabassman in The NOS Studio. This episode is about not just having but creating role models, and on being your best self without needing a mentor directly involved in your life. We explore how to create your own guardian angel or virtual privy council, and how to learn to accept and work with, rather than reject elements of yourself. Enjoy the podcast? The heart of Stoicism is learning the difference between that which we can change and that which we can't. When it comes to personal development, this can be the toughest part of that mantra, but it's far from impossible. We talk about how to channel negative personality traits into creativity and how to access the kind of confidence which comes from being comfortable, not arrogant or egotistical (which are always ultimately driven by fear). Seneca advises us to act as though someone we truly respect is watching us, but we take a different tack: why not appoint a virtual privy council of advisors and ask the most appropriate one about a given issue or decision? It's time to create your own role models, mix and match them to suit your life, forge your own unique path, and (crucially) remain flexible enough to flow with the needs of the moment rather than turning yourself into a poor copy of other people. We challenge you (and ourselves) to find someone who sees the best in you and hold yourself to that, rather than some socially-produced, standardised model. These days a lot of people talk incessantly about needing mentors, but this too easily slides into depending on others rather than working on yourself, forming that virtual privy council, and spending time with the people who make you feel most like your truest self. Dre also argues most people never really change after the age of 15, but that grief and moments of unexpected transcendence might still provoke a real shift; Jon decides to title his autobiography 'The Opposite of Comfortable'; and we both share our experiences with the number one fear in the world: public speaking.
