Today's guests founded the groundbreaking Punchbowl News. Anna Palmer worked for the Legal Times and Roll Call before joining Politico in 2011. While at the Legal Times she began to attract national attention for her work and investigating the activities of lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who ultimately went to prison. Not long after joining Politico, she joined the team of journalists investigating sexual harassment allegations against presidential candidate, Herman Cain, who subsequently suspended his campaign. While at Politico, she served as its senior Washington correspondent. She also led Women Rule a leading platform aimed at expanding leadership opportunities for women and hosted the critically acclaimed Women Rule podcast. She also got to work with our other guest who would become her primary writing partner. Jake Sherman grew up in Connecticut before attending the George Washington University and Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. He worked for the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek and the Minneapolis Star Tribune in their Washington DC bureaus and joined Politico in 2009. He too became a successful senior writer for Politico. But it seems to me that much of the real magic started happening when he began to partner with Anna. They collaborated extensively at Politico, especially covering the U S Congress. They reported on corruption scandals among Democrats and Republicans. Including on the matter of Congressman Aaron Schock who ultimately resigned. For four years, they took over the wildly popular Politico playbook after Mike Allen's departure, further expanding its readership. And in 2019, our dynamic duo wrote The Hill To Die On: The Battle for Congress and the Future of Trump's America, a New York Times bestseller. They left Politico in 2020 to start Punchbowl News, which would offer non-partisan reporting with a special focus on Washington's elite power players. Anna would become Punchbowl News' CEO with one of the top names in the business. She has been a political commentator for CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, and Washington Week. And Jake too, would become a top name in the business, serving as a political analyst for NBC News and MSNBC.

Believe me, listener, I am fully aware of who will be offended, but today we shall re-evaluate that specific audacity. To date, the patriarchy has corrupted religion, civil law, and humanity itself. Today, we women (those who live apart from societal norms) will contemplate reversing history, and playing it forward.. as if WOMEN RULED THIS WORLD. Nothing has changed, because MAN doesn't feel a need for such. Here's the speculation.. Perhaps at one point, mankind WORSHIPPED the christian god, but today's “faithful servants” are hypocritical, sexist, bigots. Many are coming here for the first time, or returning for their second visit. Please understand me: this is my platform from which I tell all of humanity that we are to be Accountable, each & every.** So admittedly, my intention is to ignite passions, encourage enlightenment, & (most importantly) remind you of [your] global responsibility. Debbie talks to legendary business author and speaker Tom Peters. And if you're wondering why she's interviewing a business management guru, it's because Tom exemplifies the new name of the podcast: [B]OLDER. I.e. getting bolder as you grow older. Tom is the co-author of In Search of Excellence, which was published 40 years ago and is considered one of the most influential business books ever written. The book makes the argument that excellent companies treat their employees with respect. They put people first. That was a more unusual perspective four decades ago than it is now.Tom is known for his brash delivery and has been happily haranguing audiences and readers for decades with his philosophy of people first. In 2017 he received the Thinkers50 Lifetime Achievement Award. He also coined the term Personal Branding. And he's not stopping, even as he turns 80.In this conversation, he reflects on excellence and teamwork; passion, outrage and why they are the most important quality in a good speaker; his love for research and data and the concept of compassionomics. He also gets personal, opening up about his childhood and his mother's influence and reiterating why he is not done yet. He's as fanatical as ever and you'll hear Debbie occasionally interrupting or trying to interrupt him in this conversation. Not something Debbie normally does but Tom's Director of Programs, Shelley Dolley, encouraged her to do so. His most recent book, Excellence Now: Extreme Humanism, is more relevant now than ever with its emphasis on creating a humane workplace. It's his eighteenth book and it may be his last, he tells Debbie. Much of his written and speech material is available—free to download—at tompeters.com and excellencenow.com.Enjoy a spirited and wide-ranging conversation with a legendary thinker. Here's the most important development that came from President Joe Biden's five hours of meetings with 23 legislators in the Oval Office on Wednesday, according to a senior White House official: “Moderates agreed that they need to coalesce around an offer to the liberals.” It might not sound like much. But given how dug in both sides have been, the White House views the commitment from the Manch-ema wing as “a real breakthrough.” And, the killing of 20-year-old Army soldier Vanessa Guillen, who had told family she was being sexually harassed by several soldiers prior to her disappearance at Fort Hood last year, has galvanized calls to change how the military deals with sexual assault and harassment. Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand and Joni Ernst, a veteran and a sexual assault survivor, have long pushed Congress to act on the issue. Join Playbook's Rachael Bade today at 1 p.m. for a Women Rule virtual joint interview with Ernst and Gillibrand to discuss the state of their proposed legislation and what it will take to curb sexual assault and sexual harassment in the military. Women did not have the right to vote when the U.S. was founded; that's a fact many still do not know. With voting rights under siege again today, listen to the group of prominent women journalists and an historian talk about the women journalists behind the scenes using their stories, influence and access to help the 19th Amendment, which acknowledged women have the right to vote, ratified 101 years ago. Panelists include: Anna Palmer, then of Politico and now Founder of Punchbowl Media, Shawna Thomas then managing editor of Vice News Tonight and now Executive Producer of CBS This Morning. and Lori Harrison-Kahan, author of “The Superwoman and Other Writings by Miriam Michelson” This was an event GCR host Joan Michelson produced and moderated at The Newseum to commemorate the centennial of the 19th Amendment. It was recorded prior to the 2020 election. Maybe you'll get tips for supporting today's voting rights battles. You'll hear: Clever ways women journalists and editors used their stories and voices to drive women's voting rights. The role of Joan's great-great aunt and journalist, Miriam Michelson, in ratification of the 19th Amendment. Fascinating stories of women's journalists on the front line of women's voting rights. The diverse levers it took to get the Amendment across the finish line. Great questions from the audience! Thank you to the Newseum for being fabulous hosts and to Politico's Women Rule initiative for supporting us! Watch the video replay here and read more stories about Miriam Michelson and other unsung heroes of the 19th Amendment fight. This week Brooke and Kelsie talk about the importance of getting to present day in history class to cover some of the amazing firsts for women in politics and other fields. If teachers don't "get there" in the curriculum, it systematically leaves women out of the mainstream public sphere. Then Kelsie sat down with Senator Maggie Hassan from New Hampshire to talk about what it's like being a woman making history. “We're not even talking about the barriers of having a plant-based company. There are still so many countries that they don't even support plant-based innovation, for every Israel and Singapore that’s making leaps and bounds, there's a France that's trying to push a meat diet. So, to be in an industry that is here to disrupt the mainstream and is here to disrupt a lot of what people hold dear, that’s a lonely journey. We need to make the effort to drive the conversation in the direction that we want it to go, because if we're not actually making the effort to build this path in this direction, it's going to default to the status quo and we know what the status quo is. So, we need to push against that.” – Jennifer Stojkavic Jennifer Stojkovic is the founder of Vegan Women’s Summit (VWS). Jennifer built her career as a community relations leader for the world’s largest tech companies in San Francisco. During her career in tech, Jennifer became increasingly interested in blending her passion for change in the food system with her experience and network in Silicon Valley. In early 2018, Jennifer launched a “Future of Food” series of partnerships bringing together CEOs and founders from leading tech brands, including WeWork and Airbnb, with emerging CEOs from the burgeoning food tech industry to establish food as the “Tech 2.0”. Quickly, Jennifer became aware of the inequities facing female founders in the food tech industry — and the unfortunate parallels drawn from the same experiences she has combatted in her career as a woman at the intersection of tech and politics in the Valley. Drawing on these experiences, Jennifer launched VWS in early 2020 with a sold-out global conference, the Vegan Women Summit. Focused on building equitable and diverse representation of women leaders from around the world and partnering with major tech brands, VWS is the world’s first events and media organization dedicated to empowering, educating, and inspiring women to bring compassion to their careers. With a thriving, fast-growing community of energetic female leaders around the world, VWS features programming with the world’s leading vegan CEOs, celebrities, investors, Olympians, and more. In December, VWS launched VWS Pathfinder, the world’s first female founder summit and pitch competition dedicated exclusively to plant-based innovation.
Why Don′t Women Rule the World?: Understanding Women′s Civic and Political Choices (Sage, 2019) is a comprehensive and useful addition to the established literature on women and politics. This book, authored by four political scientists with a diversity of training and expertise, delves into a broad and extensive overview of the issues that have long surrounded women in civic life and in pursuing positions of power and leadership. J. Cherie Strachan and Lori M. Poloni-Staudinger, Shannon L. Jenkins, Candice D. Ortbals start with an anthropological understanding of how and where sex-specific societal roles were established, leading to the establishment of patriarchal structures and societal norms, and how these structures, norms, expectations, and roles have long kept women out of the public sphere. The thrust of Why Don't Women Rule the World? is to help students and scholars understand women and politics, analyzing the limits that women have faced, and exploring how and where these limits have been dismantled and where they still remain. While the book is generally focused on women and politics in the United States, it is not limited to this perspective, and ably integrates comparative analyses and global examples of women and politics. The book also provides “ambition activities” at the end of each chapter, allowing readers, especially students, to consider their own capacities within the context of the information and knowledge they are learning about throughout the book. This is an excellent textbook for anyone teaching or working within the field of women and politics, but it is also accessible and useful for general readers who want to learn more about women and politics.
