What happens when childhood trauma meets unwavering resilience? Katherine (Kat) Omo-Osagie's story answers this question with extraordinary power and grace. At just six years old, Kat witnessed unimaginable violence when her father shot her mother multiple times before taking his own life. Today, she stands tall as Miss Lewisville, a contestant in the 2025 Miss Texas pageant, a college scholar on a presidential scholarship, and a passionate mentor to young children finding their own paths.Kat takes us through her remarkable journey of healing - from the frightened child who lost her confidence in elementary school, to the middle schooler who was bullied when classmates discovered her family's experience through online searches, to the high achiever who still struggled with feeling "good enough" despite external success. With remarkable self-awareness, she articulates how trauma manifests differently throughout various life stages, creating new challenges even as she builds strength. The turning point came through pageantry, something Kat never imagined herself doing. Winning Miss Texas Teen in 2021 with her platform "Break the Cycle of Abuse" transformed the very story she once hid from into her greatest strength. "It was a really cool full circle moment to have this story of my family that was something I used to hide from...and then suddenly bring light to it and then have all this success because of it."Kat's philosophy, inherited from her resilient mother Stephanie Bond, that "adversity breeds success if you let it," shines through every aspect of her life. Her commitment to mentorship through Big Brothers Big Sisters reflects her desire to be for others what she needed as a child. This conversation isn't just about surviving domestic violence—it's about transforming pain into purpose and using your story to create ripples of positive change. As Kat eloquently puts it: "I never want to waste such a horrible thing that happened. If there can be good done with it..." Her journey reminds us that our deepest wounds can become our greatest gifts to the world.

Facing adversity often feels like a daunting challenge, but what if these struggles are actually stepping stones to profound spiritual growth? On this episode of the Thinking Talmudist podcast, we examine the teachings of Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai and Rabbi Akiva, who illuminate the spiritual gifts attainable through perseverance. Rabbi Akiva's inspiring journey, beginning his Torah study at age 40 and overcoming immense hurdles, reminds us that resilience can lead to understanding and influence that transcend time. By embracing these "afflictions of love," we prepare ourselves for greater achievements and deeper connections with our spiritual heritage.Words hold immense power, shaping reality and relationships in ways we often overlook. We explore how maintaining integrity in our speech, even in the face of social discomfort, is vital for personal and communal growth. Through stories of resilience, like the collective spirit post-September 11th, we highlight how shared struggles can unite and transform communities, urging us to cultivate unity and kindness. Like the process of creating olive oil, where pressure brings forth purity, adversity can reveal our best qualities and foster an indomitable spirit within individuals and communities alike.Parenting holds the delicate power to shape a child's future through affirmation and encouragement. Drawing on Talmudic wisdom and the example of the High Priest, Aharon HaKohen, we discuss the necessity of bending the truth at times for the sake of peace and harmony. Positive reinforcement from parents can set the stage for a child's confidence and success, and we stress how expressing belief in their potential can nurture their greatness. Whether it's encouraging a child or fostering harmony among people, these affirmations are the foundation of nurturing confident, capable individuals who carry forward the legacy of resilience and integrity._____________The Thinking Talmudist Podcast shares select teachings of Talmud in a fresh, insightful and meaningful way. Black maternal health in Canada requires collective change, and that belief is exactly what sparked Toronto's first Black Maternal Health Week. Dr. Modupe Tunde-Byass, OB-GYN (NYGH) and President-Elect (FMWC), and Jennifer Dockery, Vice President, Quality, Post-Acute Care & Community Integration at North York General Hospital are determined to spotlight gaps in care and amplify the voices of Black mothers. In this episode of Healthcare Change Makers, Dr. Tunde-Byass and Jennifer talk candidly about why there is limited data about Black maternal health in Canada, what data is available, and what healthcare organizations can do today to better support Black families and patients. They also share a bit about their own career journey, including launching Canada's first racially concordant mentorship program. Quotables: “The biggest advice that I would give to other leaders on walking into uncharted territory is don't do it alone. Change doesn't happen in silos.” – JD "You need to start by listening, really listening, to the communities that you're aiming to serve. Their voices will actually help to guide the process – they're critical to it." – JD “I think it's important to understand that the black population accounts for 4.5% of the total Canadian population but is only represented by 2.3% physicians who identify as Black. So, you can see there are some gaps there and some underrepresentation.” – Dr. TB “The impact of anti-Black racism on Black maternal health is well documented as a crisis in the USA. It's now being recognized as an urgent health issue affecting Black women and pregnant people and families in Canada.” – JD “What we're seeing is the higher deaths of Black women in preventable diseases like breast cancer. And also, the fact that when breast cancer occurs, these women are being affected by this disease in their 40s even before they get to the point of mammograms at the age of 50.” – Dr. TB “Shining a light on these dark realities is important. And that was the essence of Black Maternal Health Week in Canada. The important thing is we're not ignored, so we have allies and people who are interested in changing the status quo.” – Dr. TB “My hope is there will be an awareness that Black Maternal Health Week isn't just about Black mothers. It's actually about a broader truth that women as a group have long been marginalized in healthcare. They've been denied access, they've been dismissed, they've been undervalued. And within that reality, Black women, Indigenous women, and other women of colour actually bear the heaviest burden.” – JD “The first step of healthcare organizations supporting Black mothers and families is recognizing that equity isn't a project. It actually has to be something that gets woven into the culture, the system, and the daily practices of care.” – JD Mentioned in this Episode: · North York General Hospital · NYGH Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic · Black Physicians of Canada · Federation of Medical Women of Canada (FMWC) · HIROC · Toronto Black Maternal Health Week · Jenelle Ambrose Dash · Black Maternal Health Collective Canada · City of Toronto Access More Interviews with Healthcare Leaders at HIROC.com/podcast Follow us on LinkedIn and Instagram, and listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your favourite podcasts. Hannah's prayers in 1Samuel 1–2 teach us about honest heart-wrenching grief, persistent faith and surrender to Heaven's will. In this study, we also explored the parable by Yeshua (Jesus) of the persistent widow in Luke 18, James 5's instruction on prayer for the sick, and John 11's account of Yeshua's weeping at Lazarus' tomb. We discussed how Hannah's desperate plea for a child mirrors humanity's need for redemption, emphasizing community support, authentic prayer and hope in God's ultimate plan of resurrection and restoration.
What if the very struggles and afflictions we face are divine opportunities for introspection and growth? We invite you to explore the poignant insights of Tractate Brachot 5A, where ancient wisdom meets modern challenges. This episode unpacks the spiritual significance of illness and suffering, not as obstacles but as gifts that allow for emotional and spiritual preparation. Against the backdrop of the tragic events in Israel on October 7th, 2023, we draw parallels to the collective need for unity and reflection during national crises, urging us to find purpose and meaning even in our darkest moments.Emphasizing vigilance and dedication, we examine how the Torah community must embrace a renewed sense of responsibility. Through personal anecdotes and teachings from the Talmud, we see how unexpected situations can transform into opportunities for mitzvot, revealing the divine messages hidden within our daily experiences. Reflect on the profound concept of "afflictions of love," where divine trials aren't just burdens but pathways to purify the soul and earn eternal rewards. As we connect these lessons to the spiritual essence of the Korban Asham, we understand the weight of acknowledging wrongdoings and seeking atonement. In a world where routine often dulls passion, this episode challenges us to maintain the sincerity and purpose behind our sacred practices. Through the lens of childhood vaccinations, we draw parallels to how afflictions are expressions of divine love. We also explore the profound notion from the Talmud that the suffering of children serves as a powerful atonement message for their generation, urging personal and communal introspection. Together, we strive to embrace these lessons, extending wishes for a meaningful and peaceful Shabbos, filled with reflection and spiritual connection._____________The Thinking Talmudist Podcast shares select teachings of Talmud in a fresh, insightful and meaningful way. Welcome to our special Passover episode, where we explore the profound layers of the Passover Seder, a ceremony that beautifully encapsulates over three millennia of Jewish history and identity. In this episode, we discuss the fifteen steps of the Seder, from Kiddush to the festive meal, and delve into the powerful narratives and symbols that connect us to our ancestors. We share a humorous yet insightful exchange between a rabbi and an astrophysics professor, which cleverly illustrates the depth of Talmudic study compared to the simplification of complex ideas. The conversation highlights how Jewish traditions and teachings are much more than historical records; they are vibrant memories passed down through generations, forming a continuous link back to the Exodus from Egypt. We reflect on how the presence of multiple generations at the Seder table turns these historical events into a vivid collective memory, extending back hundreds of years and forward into future gatherings. This episode also touches on the intriguing absence of certain words in Biblical Hebrew, such as "history," which is replaced with "memory" — a concept deeply ingrained in Jewish culture.Join us as we discuss how the Passover Seder transcends mere historical recounting, acting instead as a dynamic memory that engages with the past as a living part of our present and future. We conclude with a powerful message on transforming pain into blessing, inspired by the life of Henrietta Szold, who turned personal hardship into a legacy of love and humanitarianism.Main Takeaways:The Seder as a Link Across Time: The Passover Seder is not just a ritual but a bridge connecting 3,300 years of Jewish history through family stories and traditions passed down through generations.Memory Over History: The episode explores why the Hebrew language prefers the term "memory" over "history," emphasizing personal and collective identity formation through remembered experiences rather than impersonal historical events.Cultural Insights: A look at how the absence of certain words in Hebrew, like "history" and "civility," reflects deeper cultural values, with "memory" (zachor) and "chutzpah" taking prominent roles.Humor and Wisdom: The interaction between the rabbi and the professor serves as a metaphor for the depth and complexity of Jewish teachings and the importance of continual learning and interpretation.Transforming Pain into Blessing: Inspired by Henrietta Szold's story, the episode underscores a fundamental Jewish principle of using persoSupport the showGot your own question for Rabbi Bernath? What if healing after trauma wasn't just about survival—but about creativity, reclamation, and transformation? Today's guest, Marlee Liss, is living proof that healing can look radically different than what we've been taught. After experiencing sexual violence, she was thrown into the justice system and quickly realized something: the traditional punitive approach wasn't leading to healing—it was retraumatizing. So, she did something groundbreaking.Marlee became the first person in North America to advocate for and successfully secure a court-ordered restorative justice process, requiring her assailant to undergo mandated therapy instead of incarceration. Through this process, she proved that true justice isn't always about punishment—it can be about deep, lasting accountability, healing, and even transformation. This is the second episode in my series on using creativity to change the world—because creativity isn't just for art. It's for how we think, how we heal, and how we rebuild broken systems.✨ From this conversation, you'll learn:The radical question that changed everything for Marlee—and how it can change your life, tooWhy the justice system often fails survivors—and what a real, healing alternative looks likeHow creativity can be used to solve even the world's toughest problemsThe surprising key to true healing: reclaiming joy, pleasure, and personal freedom-Remember to subscribe/follow the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. With over 15 years of experience in the wellness industry, Pat's journey began in the physical fitness space before evolving into a deep exploration of mental, emotional, and relational wellness.Driven by a passion for growth, healing, and connection, his mission is to create a more authentic and connected world—one where we all live with compassion, playfulness, and curiosity.Today, Pat leads transformative programs for men's health, offers corporate wellness workshops, and runs a six-month Breathwork Facilitator Training called Journey – The Breath. In today's conversation, we'll dive into one of the most essential aspects of his work: the shadow, in anticipation of the release of his upcoming book „Shadow Work“.In my own journey, I first encountered the concept of the shadow several years ago, a term popularized in Western culture by the renowned psychotherapist Carl Jung – and in our conversation today, Pat and I explore the origins of the shadow, how it's formed, and how we can bring awareness to it.We discuss:The unconscious behaviors and protective strategies we may be playing out, how to work with them, and how this awareness can transform how we relate to ourselves and others. How the shadow shows up in romantic relationshipsCommon emotions we often push into the shadow, such as shame, grief, and anger. We tackle the ever-present inner critic, which is so common for many men, and discuss how we can relate to it in a healthier way to live more freely and authentically. At the heart of this episode is the importance of shining light on the aspects of ourselves that are hidden and may be unconsciously dictating our lives—bringing them into awareness, and learning to be in right relationship with them.As I see it, this conversation serves as a masterclass on the shadow—understanding what it is, how we encounter it, and how we can integrate those disowned aspects of ourselves into our daily lives. This is a conversation you won't want to miss, and it's been an absolute pleasure for me to co-create with my new friend, Pat...—Connect with Pat DivillyWebsite: https://www.patdivilly.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/patdivillyRead Pat's Book "Fit Mind: 8 Weeks to Change Your Inner Soundtrack and Tune into Your Greatness": https://www.amazon.com/Fit-Mind-Change-Soundtrack-Greatness-ebook/dp/B09NFCM6BW?ref_=ast_author_dpPre-order Pat's upcoming Book "Shadow Work: A Practical Guide to Embracing your Shadow Side, Tackling Shame and Transforming Pain into Power: https://www.easons.com/shadow-work-pat-divilly-9781804581889?srsltid=AfmBOormQXHdyd4B31H3RnkQpYhIUJf197PmckeOViXSmU2-SWIWueiM&fbclid=PAY2xjawIWONFleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABpmTso9NEREyKF6j7LaX-OhGK2LsZHQnAw200GQzmc6dJ26rQW0-u9ME2KA_aem_hhbTp1_xARsLKz1fITOyHQ—Connect with Alex Lehmann:Website: https://www.alexlehmann.co/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alexlehmann_Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@HeartofManPodcast/featuredListen to this conversation on Apple Podcasts and leave a review: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/heart-of-man/id1697289478Email: alexlehmanncoaching@gmail.comInterested in working with me 1:1?
