Dolby Digital Vs DTS: What's The Difference? As home cinema has improved, new surround sound formats have sprung up, bringing more detail and realism to movie nights. But let's go back to basics and look at the two most popular surround sound formats: DTS and Dolby Digital. Full article here... Both DTS and Dolby Digital are audio compression technologies. In their most basic form, both DTS and Dolby Digital support 5.1-channel audio. And more advanced versions of the formats support 7.1-channels, HD surround sound and overhead speakers, in the form of DTS:X and Dolby Atmos. DTS is encoded at a higher bit-rate and therefore is considered by some experts to be better quality. Others argue that Dolby Digital's technology is more advanced and produces better sound quality at a lower bit-rate. The first film to use Dolby Digital was Batman Returns in 1992. Since then, Dolby has released a slew of increasingly advanced codecs, including Dolby Digital Plus, which supports HD surround sound and up to 7.1 speaker channels. Want the best? Dolby TrueHD is a lossless format that promises to be identical to the movie studio's master recording. Then there's the object-based audio system Dolby Atmos. DTS (originally Digital Theater Systems) was founded in 1993 to compete with Dolby Labs. The first film to use DTS was Jurassic Park also in 1993. The major differences are the compression levels and bit-rates. Dolby Digital compresses 5.1 digital audio down to a bit-rate of 640 kbits/s (kilobits per second) for Blu-ray discs (448 kbits/s for DVD).  DTS is less compressed and supports higher bit-rates of up to 1.5Mb/s (megabits per second) (768 kbits/s for DVD). In HD formats, Dolby Digital Plus supports up to 1.7Mbps, while DTS-HD High Resolution supports up to 6Mb/s. In True HD vs DTS:HD Master Audio theoretically there shouldn't be any difference since both are lossless.  Which is better: DTS or Dolby Digital?Many people have done A/B testing of DD and DTS and in most cases DTS comes out on top. We too agree that there is a richer and more detailed sound. Even if you accept that Dolby has a better compression algorithm, in 1993, the computing power of machines were not strong enough to bridge the 1Mbps data rate gap. And probably more importantly, like everything in our hobby you need equipment that is precise enough to be able to hear the difference between these formats. If you have a $500 system, speakers included, you are not going to hear the difference.  Fast forward to the Blu-ray era. Discs now have the capacity for more data storage and higher data rates. Compression is better and computing power more grew by 100X from 1992. Lossless is on the scene and there is no longer a difference. But both Dolby and DTS have lossy formats that claim to sound as good as their lossless formats. But DD+ does so at 4Mbps less than the other.  We have done tests with DD+ and DTS MA High Resolution and can't tell the difference between the two and their lossless counterparts. But who cares about the lossy formats because Bluray discs have enough space that there is no reason compress the audio anyway. True, but streaming does have bandwidth limitations and that's where DD+ wins. Indeed there are some streaming services using DD+ in their streams. What about Object Based Audio? Both Dolby and DTS have object based audio. Dolby calls theirs ATMOS and DTS uses the X moniker. ATMOS is what the streaming services are using. Why is Dolby Seemingly the Format of Choice? We think it comes down to two things, data rate and tools. Currently, data rates limit the quality of streaming. The more bits you can set aside for picture quality the better it's going to look. If you can get studio quality audio at 1.5 Mbps vs 6 Mbps the choice is pretty obvious. Then there are the tools. Dolby has developed great tools and have trained the mixers to use them. They have plugins for all their formats built right into ProTools and other commonly used authoring software. DTS also has similar tools but were later to the game and have fewer mixers familiar with them. These two factors are huge for the adoption of Dolby. Which one is Best? It's like Bourbon. There are really good and extremely good Bourbons out there. You can find really good bourbons everywhere. You buy and enjoy them and know there is better but if you can't find any, who cares? DD, DD+, and Dolby ATMOS are everywhere DTS is harder to find. Enjoy Dolby like a good Bourbon. But if you have a UHD player and you want to up your experience, pour yourself a Pappy pop in a disc and enjoy your DTS!

The faster the speed the faster the data is transferred, allowing for smoother livestreams for example. My original connection speed was 5Mbps down, 1Mbps up - which led to stability issues whilst connecting via video and livestreaming. The upgraded speed for the Sunshine Summit was 30Mbps down, 5Mbps up - which allowed the livestreams to go ahead. Daiquiri is a Texas native with a special affinity for college football, Elvis Presley and her dog Bobo.  Resources Public Knowledge Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue  News Roundup Montana becomes first state to pass a law challenging the FCC's repeal of net neutrality Montana Governor Steve Bullock, a Democrat, signed an Executive Order last week that requires internet service providers to abide by the FCC' 2015 net neutrality principles. The order simply states that ISPs with state contracts must abide by the principles. Bullock says this is a template that other states should use. harper Neidig has more in The Hill. FCC draft report says wireless broadband not a full substitute for wired  FCC Chairman Ajit Pai reneged on previous statements in which he suggested that the FCC would consider mobile broadband to be a full substitute for wired broadband. Back in 2014, the Obama era FCC under Chairman Tom Wheeler raised the definition of what is to be considered high speed broadband from 4 Mbps down and 1Mbps up to 25Mbps down and 3 Mbps up.  But last August, the FCC proposed 10 Mbps up and 1Mbps down for mobile broadband as an adequate substitute for wired broadband. Thankfully, in a reversal last week, Pai circulated a draft report stating that he would keep the current broadband definition intact. The Open Meeting is scheduled for January 30th. FCC to investigate false alarm in Hawaii You've heard by now that a false alert went out to Hawaiians last week warning them about an incoming ballistic missile strike. The alert turned out to be false. So the FCC says it's investigating. Apple and Verizon announce tax windfalls Verizon and Apple announced windfalls last week stemming from Republicans' tax overhaul. Verizon said the new tax bill would reduce their 4th quarter tax liabilities by $16.8 billion, which translates to $4.10 in earnings per share. Apple claims that it would repatriate some $250 billion in overseas cash from the overhaul. The company claimed that it would invest $350 billion in the U.S. economy over the next 5 years. Google's Sundar Pichai supports no NDAs for women reporting harassment Google CEO Sundar Pichai told Kara Swisher and Ari Melber last week that he would have "no issues" with women speaking out about sexual harassment, even if they are bound by an non-disclosure agreement. Pichai said he's not even aware of such agreements that would prevent women from telling their stories. Comcast's NCB merger conditions expire The merger conditions the feds placed on Comcast back when they acquired NBC Universal in 2011 have expired. This raises concerns for advocates who are concerned about Comcast now becoming emboldened to engage in anti-competitive practices. Kim Hart reports for Axios. EFF files amicus brief urging Ninth Circuit to require warrants for border phone searches Under President Trump, U.S. Customs searches of mobile devices belonging to people entering the U.S. have more than tripled at the U.S. border with Mexico. The Electronic Frontier Foundation wants those warrantless searches to stop. So it filed an amicus brief in U.S. v. Cano, urging the court to apply the same Fourth Amendment standard to those entering the country that it applies to arrestees.

數年前，我服務的公司忽然有了一個簡單的需求。需求背後的故事不重要，重點是，為何最後IP Multicast幫我解決了問題。很簡單的需求原始的需求只有這麼簡單。下午三點半，全公司七百多人，可以一起在座位的PC前面，同步收看健康操影片，每個人跟著影片中的動作，做做健康體操，增加員工的身體健康。背景資訊：全公司七百多人，被路由器分隔在好多網段，甚至部分外部辦公室，頻寬只有E1 (2Mbps)的專線。我一聽到以上需求的時候，我發現，我必須要解決兩個問題。第一個問題是頻寬七百多人，假設一個員工觀看影片，占用1Mbps，如果我還是採取單播(Unicast)的話，我在伺服器上面，就必須要提供至少700Mbps的頻寬，來播放這個影片。當時的伺服器，雖然物理埠可以提供1,000Mbps的頻寬，我的確也可以將兩個埠做合併(Port Aggregation、EtherChannel)。但是，我沒有把握磁碟I/O是否跟得上這個速度。700Mbps遠比當時公司內部安裝在最高級硬體的Microsoft Exchange Server需求還要高。如果真的要這麼做，我需要好多部的伺服器，才能夠支撐全部的流量需求。假設我真的要設計成多部伺服器，我的伺服器也需要增加額外的軟體，才能夠讓用戶端自動分散連結不同的伺服器，或是負載均衡的網路硬體。當時，這些額外增加的預算都不可行。另外，外部辦公室的部分，如果使用單播，只有2Mbps頻寬的專線也不夠用。增加專線，預算上又不可行。第二個問題是同步不是全部的員工，都會同時打開播放軟體，假設有員工比較晚打開播放軟體，最好能夠同步地從現在的時間點開始看，而不是一律從頭開始觀看。我們知道今天的技術，例如 YouTube Live，可以透過將影片分割成數秒鐘一段，即使只使用單播的技術，一樣可以達成類似同步的效果。可是，當年並沒有這樣的軟體。IP Multicast解決我這兩個問題最後，我在網路端的設計，只剩下一個選擇，那就是IP Multicast。因為，我只要在伺服器端丟出一份的影片內容、一份的頻寬、一份的IP Multicast UDP/RTP封包，全公司的員工都可以收到。延續前面的分析，伺服器端只需要丟出 1Mbps 左右的頻寬，全公司七百多人都可以同時收到。路由器上面需要設定IP Multicast路由協定。所有UDP/RTP的封包，都是由中間的路由器來擔任往各網段複製封包的工作。到了VLAN裡面，就改由L2交換器擔任逐埠(per port)的封包複製。我全部的路由器都是Cisco，因此，IP Multicast路由協定，很自然地就使用Cisco PIM (Protocol Independent Multicast)。更好的是，封包收到的時間是完全同步的！PC端的軟體，不論何時打開軟體，都可以同步播出影片的內容。One more thing…因為沒有其他的預算，伺服器端我用既有的Windows Server (當時是Server 2003)的Windows Media Service，用戶端就只使用Windows Media Player。影片原始檔案是MPEG-1，我用Windows免費軟體轉換成 Windows Media的影片格式。從網路的角度來看，UDP/RTP的封包，幾乎都是同時抵達用戶端的，可是我真正走到不同的座位觀察才發現，因為用戶端PC的硬體新舊、規格不一致，每一部PC真正開始緩存內容、播放，竟然有數秒鐘的時間差異，即使接在完全相同VLAN、交換器的PC。我當時的同事，幫我想到一個辦法，讓全公司的人都有一致的音樂節奏可以做體操。方法是每個辦公室找一部PC一樣打開收聽IP Multicast，將影片中的聲音，接到各辦公室內的擴音(聲音廣播)系統，播放給整個辦公室聽。雖然PC上面的畫面有幾秒鐘的不一致，因為影片都是每天重複的，只要廣播的聲音是同步的，同事們覺得可以接受畫面的幾秒鐘的差異。如果大家未來有類似的需求，IP Multicast將是您的好工具。我從這個故事也學習到，不是全部的問題，都可以用技術方法來解決，需要大家一起合作，一起發揮創意啊！Fort Charlotte, Saint Vincent & the Grenadines本文的照片，都是在這裡拍攝的。
