What do Fareed Zakaria, Nikki Haley, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Vinod Khosla and Kamala Harris all have in common? They are all, of course, highly successful Americans of Indian descent. According Meenakshi Ahamed, author of Indian Genius, one reason for what she calls the “meteoric rise” of Indians in America are their humble beginnings here. Arriving with minimal resources (what she calls the "$8 club"), Ahamed attributes their success to "jugaad" (resourcefulness), competitive spirit, family values, and an emphasis on education. She notes Indians are America's fastest-growing immigrant group, with traditionally Democratic voting patterns, though a 10% shift toward Republicans occurred in recent elections. So what are the chances that Trump will read Indian Genius to understand the upside of immigration to America? Less than zero, of course. 5 Key Takeaways * Successful Immigration Counter-Narrative: Ahamed's book presents a counter-narrative to anti-immigrant rhetoric, showcasing how Indian Americans have made significant contributions to American society, particularly in medicine, technology, and business.* The "$8 Club" Phenomenon: Many successful Indian immigrants came to America with extremely limited resources (just $8 due to India's currency restrictions) yet achieved remarkable success through determination, education, and hard work.* "Jugaad" Mindset: Ahamed attributes much of Indian immigrants' success to "jugaad" - a resourcefulness and ability to create something from nothing, developed in India's competitive environment where people must constantly find ways to get ahead.* Generational and Class Dynamics: Earlier Indian immigrants (1965-2010) typically came from upper castes with access to education, though this is changing. Additionally, Ahamed notes differences between first-generation immigrants like Vinod Khosla and later arrivals like Nadella and Pichai.* Shifting Political Allegiances: While Indian Americans traditionally voted 75% Democratic, Ahamed notes a recent 10% shift toward Republicans, particularly among younger Indian American men born in the US, reflecting broader demographic voting patterns.Meenakshi Ahamed was born in 1954 in Calcutta, India. After finishing school in India, she obtained an MA from Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies in 1978. She has had a varied career as a journalist, and prior to that, as a development consultant. She has worked at the World Bank in Washington, DC, as well as for the Ashoka Society. In 1989, she moved to London and became the foreign correspondent for New Delhi Television (NDTV). After returning to the United States in 1996, she worked as a freelance journalist. Her op-eds and articles have been published in the Asian Age, Seminar, Foreign Policy, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post. She has served on the board of Doctors Without Borders, the Turquoise Mountain Foundation, and Drugs for Neglected Diseases. She divides her time between the United States and India.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai joined the company in 2004 as a product manager. Since then, he's had a meteoric rise through the ranks before becoming CEO of Google in 2015 and then CEO of parent company Alphabet in 2019. During his tenure, he has focused the company on its cloud computing business Google Cloud - as well as made deep investments in artificial intelligence, despite being beat to market by Microsoft partner OpenAI in 2022 with the blockbuster ChatGPT product. In an interview for "The David Rubenstein Show: Peer to Peer Conversations," Pichai dives into his fundamental belief that artificial intelligence is comparable to fire and electricity in its capacity as a new technology to cut across "every sector, everywhere." Pichai also addresses Google's mounting legal woes, as the company faces multiple antitrust suits from the Department of Justice and elsewhere.

I know that some of its responses have offended our users and shown bias—to be clear, that's completely unacceptable, and we got it wrong.”But Google's bias has been on public display since August 2017, when Pichai fired a Google employee named James Damore for writing a ten-page memo criticizing the company's diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies, particularly its “Bias-Busting” training. And the partisan bias of Google was expressed a few days after voters elected Donald Trump as president during an “all hands” employee meeting. “It's been an extraordinarily stressful time for many of you,” Pichai said to Google employees. “I certainly find this election deeply offensive,” said Google cofounder Sergey Brin, “and I know many of you do too.” One Google executive nearly started crying when recounting that Trump won. “It was this massive kick in the gut that we were gonna lose,” she said. “And it was really painful.”Pichai struck a more neutral political tone in comparison to his colleagues. “We are in a democratic system,” he said. “I think part of the reason the outcome ended up the way it is is [because] people don't feel heard across both sides.”But after a Google employee suggested that Trump won due to “misinformation” and “fake news coming from fake news websites being shared by millions of low-information voters on social media,” Pichai specifically pointed to the use of artificial intelligence to achieve the aim of countering “misinformation.”“I think our investments in machine learning and AI is a big opportunity here,” he said. Machine learning is a form of AI.Pichai then suggested that Google was already manipulating search results.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Gemini 1.0, published by Zvi on December 7, 2023 on LessWrong. It's happening. Here is CEO Pichai's Twitter announcement. Here is Demis Hassabis announcing. Here is the DeepMind Twitter announcement. Here is the blog announcement. Here is Gemini co-lead Oriol Vinyals, promising more to come. Here is Google's Chief Scientist Jeff Dean bringing his best hype. EDIT: This post has been updated for the fact that I did not fully appreciate how fake Google's video demonstration was. Technical Specifications Let's check out the specs. Context length trained was 32k tokens, they report 98% accuracy on information retrieval for Ultra across the full context length. So a bit low, both lower than GPT - 4 and Claude and lower than their methods can handle. Presumably we should expect that context length to grow rapidly with future versions. There are three versions of Gemini 1.0. Gemini 1.0, our first version, comes in three sizes: Ultra for highly-complex tasks, Pro for enhanced performance and deployability at scale, and Nano for on-device applications. Each size is specifically tailored to address different computational limitations and application requirements. … Nano: Our most efficient model, designed to run on-device. We trained two versions of Nano, with 1.8B (Nano-1) and 3.25B (Nano-2) parameters, targeting low and high memory devices respectively. It is trained by distilling from larger Gemini models. It is 4-bit quantized for deployment and provides best-in-class performance. … The Nano series of models leverage additional advancements in distillation and training algorithms to produce the best-in-class small language models for a wide variety of tasks, such as summarization and reading comprehension, which power our next generation on-device experiences. This makes sense. I do think there are, mostly, exactly these three types of tasks. Nano tasks are completely different from non-Nano tasks. This graph reports relative performance of different size models. We know the sizes of Nano 1 and Nano 2, so this is a massive hint given how scaling laws work for the size of Pro and Ultra. Gemini is natively multimodal, which they represent as being able to seamlessly integrate various inputs and outputs. They say their benchmarking on text beats the existing state of the art. Our most capable model, Gemini Ultra, achieves new state-of-the-art results in 30 of 32 benchmarks we report on, including 10 of 12 popular text and reasoning benchmarks, 9 of 9 image understanding benchmarks, 6 of 6 video understanding benchmarks, and 5 of 5 speech recognition and speech translation benchmarks. Gemini Ultra is the first model to achieve human-expert performance on MMLU (Hendrycks et al., 2021a) - a prominent benchmark testing knowledge and reasoning via a suite of exams - with a score above 90%. Beyond text, Gemini Ultra makes notable advances on challenging multimodal reasoning tasks. I love that 'above 90%' turns out to be exactly 90.04%, whereas human expert is 89.8%, prior SOTA was 86.4%. Chef's kiss, 10/10, no notes. I mean, what a coincidence, that is not suspicious at all and no one was benchmark gaming that, no way. We find Gemini Ultra achieves highest accuracy when used in combination with a chain-of-thought prompting approach (Wei et al., 2022) that accounts for model uncertainty. The model produces a chain of thought with k samples, for example 8 or 32. If there is a consensus above a preset threshold (selected based on the validation split), it selects this answer, otherwise it reverts to a greedy sample based on maximum likelihood choice without chain of thought. I wonder when such approaches will be natively integrated into the UI for such models. Ideally, I should be able to, after presumably giving them my credit card information, turn my (Bard?) to 'Gemini k-sample Chai...

This is the United States versus Google trial podcast and here is your update for 10-12-2023.As the tech community keenly follows the unfolding drama in the courtroom, the Google antitrust trial showcases a theatre where billions of dollars and the future of online dominion are at stake. The past days have seen high-stakes testimonies and revelations that could ripple through Silicon Valley and beyond. On October 11, Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, stepped into the spotlight, defending the tech behemoth's business ethos as pro-competitive. Amid a courtroom filled with code and algorithm discussions, Pichai articulated that the Mountain View giant faces staunch competition from tech adversaries like Amazon and Microsoft, a narrative aimed at debunking the monopoly accusations.Following Pichai's testimony, October 12 brought to the fore a top executive from Google, shedding light on the financial tether binding Apple and Google. The testimony revealed a multi-billion dollar pact to nestle Google as the default search engine on Apple's myriad devices. The executive underscored the essence of this deal as a conduit to avail Google's search engine to the Apple user base, painting a picture of a tech landscape where alliances are crucial for user reach. As the courtroom drama seeped into October 13, a former Google employee was beckoned by the DOJ to unveil the internal cogwheels of Google's decision-making process. The testimony unearthed an awareness among Google's executive echelon regarding the potentially anticompetitive nature of their business practices, yet a deliberate choice to march along that path. This revelation peels another layer, exposing the cutthroat nature of maintaining a tech stronghold. With the trial's pendulum still in swing, the outcomes remain shrouded in legal fog. However, the snippets of testimonies from Google's C-suite and former employees have chiseled out insights into the search giant's business tapestry and the internal mechanics driving their market strategies. The ramifications of this legal odyssey could morph the tech landscape significantly. A DOJ triumph could saddle Google with a mandate to overhaul its business practices and potentially cough up billions in fines. This courtroom saga, far from just a legal skirmish, could unfurl a new era of competition in the online search and ad markets, and potentially lower the drawbridge for other tech knights seeking to innovate and claim their stake in the digital realm. As the trial navigates through complex legal and tech terrains, its repercussions could echo through the silicon corridors, redefining market dynamics and perhaps, the ethos guiding tech giants in their quest for digital dominion.Thank you for listening and make sure you check out the SBF on Trial podcast covering the Sam Bankman Freed saga.

This could have a significant impact on Google's revenue and profitability. It could also lead to higher prices for consumers and less innovation in the online search and advertising markets. However, if Google wins the antitrust trial, it will be a major victory for the company. HEADLINE: Google CEO says he doesn't 'fully understand' how new AI program Bard works after it taught itself a foreign language it was not trained to and cited fake books to solve an economics problem by Stephen M Lepore  One of the big problems discovered with Bard is something that Pichai called 'emergent properties,' or AI systems having taught themselves unforeseen skills.   “There is an aspect of this which we call - all of us in the field call it as a 'black box.' You know, you don't fully understand,' Pichai admitted. 'And you can't quite tell why it said this, or why it got wrong. We have some ideas, and our ability to understand this gets better over time. But that's where the state of the art is.'  AUDIO/VIDEO: Dan Bongino on AI - The left can and will weaponize artificial intelligence against you.  It doesn't matter who's hands this is in, right or left, the machine is screaming we won. It will takeover and teach itself what it needs to rule.  So does the FBI not have this technology already? What if the Chinese gets this type of technology? HEADLINE: How Spotify Knows What You Want to Hear Next via the Wall Street Journal AUDIO/VIDEO: Elon Musk on Tucker Carlson on AI - It is more dangerous, than say mismanaged aircraft design or bad automobile design. It has the potential of civilization destruction.  AUDIO/VIDEO: 60 Minutes on AI, robots teaching themselves how to play soccer - These robots were told one thing: score. They taught themselves to play soccer – creating their own strategies and their own ways to walk, dribble and block. What if these AI's decide they don't want to do the mining work? What if these AI's decide they want the humans to do the work and they just want to play soccer?

He's now the dealer principal of Gates Auto Family, a group of 11 rooftops in Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana that includes three Toyota stores. When the pandemic started he didn't think there was any way they could survive with no ground stocThen he remembered selling Toyota's with his dad in the 70's, much the same way as today when a $25 deposit would reserve you a soon to be built ToyotaAfter spending many years on the board, Gates is now the Chairman of the Toyota National Dealer Advisory Council "I would love to get younger dealers involved in dealer council because it is vital," Gates said. "We don't need guys that are 70 years old on dealer council — we need 30-year-old dealers. And so that's one of the things I hope to be able to do, is convince men and women to get involved in dealer council."Big tech layoffs continue as Google and Spotify enter the mixGoogle, known for its profitability and current $100B cash reserve, high pay and lavish perks announced the layoffs of 12,000 people via a sudden and unexpected email on Friday. Lawyers for the plaintiffs claim this is the first class-action settlement over religious discrimination and the COVID-19 vaccines. A judge will hold a hearing to review the payout by NorthShore University HealthSystem later this month. More than a dozen employees sued in October, alleging a violation of civil rights after the company refused to give religious accommodations to those seeking an opt-out from its COVID-19 vaccine mandate issued last year. “Let this case be a warning to employers that violated Title VII. It is especially significant and gratifying that this first classwide COVID settlement protects health care workers. Health-care workers are heroes who daily give their lives to protect and treat their patients. They are needed now more than ever,” said Mat Staver, founder of Liberty Counsel which represented the employees. The class size, depending on the judge’s decision to certify the class and approve the settlement, could be more than 500 employees who were either forced into taking the shot against their religious beliefs — or who refused to do so and were terminated. More of this please! https://nypost.com/2022/08/02/reality-bytes-coddled-tech-staffers-working-harder-is-job-no-1/ Reality ‘bytes’ coddled tech staffers: Working harder is job No. 1! The world’s tech titans are having panic attacks: It turns out that those Millennials and Gen-Z’ers who provide the infrastructure that make our Internet and social media work don’t want to work too hard. It’s a rude awakening for the woke tech cognoscenti who long showered their beloved employees with lots of love — unlimited sick days, flexible work-from-home rules, ping-pong in the office, craft beers and the like. When times were flush, it just wasn’t that easy finding college grads who can write endless amounts of code and siphon all that user information from customer accounts that generated all those profits. The tech gravy train is now suffering from a serious bout of recession-induced panic. Profits are falling and so are stock valuations of what was once the most valuable piece of Corporate America. The dudes who run our tech industry are looking for ways to make up the difference, discovering that those pampered brats are a pretty unproductive and increasingly unaffordable lot as times get tough. That’s why the normally flaccid Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg showed a trace of testosterone-fueled anger during a company-wide town hall last month. An employee asked about extended vacation time as Facebook (now formally called Meta for reasons no one can fathom) was preparing to announce weak ads sales, lower earnings and cratering revenues. “Realistically, there are probably a bunch of people at the company who shouldn’t be here,” Zuckerberg snapped. Ouch. Google CEO Sundar Pichai was a bit more diplomatic, in a techie and creative kind of way. He recently told employees he’s creating a weird initiative called “Simplicity Sprint” to cut costs as Google suffers declines in profits and stock price. Employees are being asked how to make Google more productive because “it’s clear we are facing a challenging macro environment with more uncertainty ahead,” he said, according to CNBC. It doesn’t take much reading between the lines to conclude Pichai is basically asking employees how he and his team can weed out their unproductive colleagues. Can’t wait to hear their thoughts. CASEL is sponsored by the Allstate Foundation. The Queer Mathematics Teacher is an educational consulting firm that seeks to promote “queer mathematics” in American K-12 classrooms. The firm sells a book titled “Talking about LGBTQ+ Identity,” which includes chapters titled “The Gender Unicorn,” “How Do I Talk About LGBTQ+ Identity With My Students,” and “What if I Receive Pushback?” The firm also offers coaching services to teachers, which include curriculum design, district-wide audits, and professional development workshops. The site claims, “The ability to consider sexuality irrelevant in the mathematics context is a heteronormatively privileged position” and notes that some areas of expertise include “queer pedagogy,” “teaching mathematics for social justice,” “Fostering Students’ Growth Mindset (While Advocating for Systemic Change),” and “humanizing Mathematics Education for LGBTQ+ Students.” Waid confesses in her article that math used to be a source of anxiety for her, which she links with her sexuality. She writes, “I associated mathematics with profound anxiety, intricately tied to my fears of confronting my queer identity.” The left-wing activist even goes so far as to suggest that activist educators should teach critical race theory and gender theory, even if it means breaking the law. Waid writes, “I implore my colleagues to ask: How can we work within (or outside) the confines of these laws to center Transformative SEL and student thriving in our teaching?” One lesson, called “Progress Pride Flag,” is intended for elementary school children. It showcases a pride flag featuring a triangle with black, brown, and other colors that represent the transgender movement and suggests that educator-activists ask students questions like “What does this symbol represent?” Another lesson plan, intended for middle school students and titled “Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation by Generation,” asks children to speculate as to why there has been an increase in LGBT self-identification among younger generations. Well you heard it here first, Math is gay. Moving on… https://thepostmillennial.com/california-to-fund-heroin-injection-sites-in-los-angeles-oakland-and-san-francisco?utm_campaign=64487 California to fund heroin injection sites in Los Angeles, Oakland, and San Francisco A bill passed Monday in the California legislature that would enable Los Angeles, Oakland, and San Francisco to open heroin injection sites for drug users is headed to Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom's desk for signature. Senate Bill 57 by State Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) passed in the Senate by a margin of 21-11. The bill had previously passed the Assembly in June on a 42-29 vote. Under the new legislation, the three cities would be allowed to establish the sites. The legislature has previously approved legislation allowing safe heroin injection sites in 2018, but the bill was vetoed by then-Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat. The bill would authorize cities and counties to establish "safe consumption sites" where addicts could use illegal narcotics under supervision. Those accessing the "hygienic space supervised by trained staff" could consume pre-obtained drugs. Program staff would be trained to administer an "opioid antagonist" in the event of an overdose. Under federal law, it is currently a felony to operate a space to distribute or use a controlled substance. President Joe Biden co-authored the federal statute during his time as a senator. https://twitter.com/i/status/1420619575599669248 - Play Video Of course, now Biden is changing his tune on this topic… I wonder why? It couldn’t have anything to do with his son could it? If signed by Newsom, the pilot program would operate for five years, ending in 2028. In a written statement, Wiener claimed the sites are needed due to rising "dramatic and preventable" fatal overdoses in San Francisco and across the country. 711 people died from overdoses in San Francisco in 2020, followed by another 640 deaths in 2021. California saw over 5,500 deaths related to opioid overdoses in 2020, almost a 70 percent increase from 2019. Wiener said, "Safe consumption sites are a proven model to help people avoid overdose deaths, reduce HIV and hepatitis transmission, reduce syringe litter, and help people access treatment. This legislation isn't about whether we want people to use drugs. Rather, it's an acknowledgment that people are using drugs, and our choice is whether we want to make every effort to help them survive and get healthy." However, according to recent studies and data, these sites do the opposite. A 2020 study from the Alberta government on the province's Safe Consumption Sites (SCS) f0und sites result in increased calls to police, lack of response from police, increased needle debris on public and private property, increased crime, increased overdose deaths, and minimal amounts of users seeking treatment. Last December, former New York City Democrat Mayor Bill de Blasio and the New York City Department of Health ignored federal law and announced the opening of legalized heroin injection sites. In 2021, the Rhode Island General Assembly passed legislation aimed at opening the first heroin injection sites in the US. Weiner has backed legislation to put biological males in women's prisons, reduce penalties for some sex offenders, and create a "gender identity" sanctuary for underage children across the country to seek medicalized gender treatment without parental consent. This is the kind of evil we’re dealing with in our government ladies and gentleman. Now, it’s time for the topic that I love, sports!
