Out on the water, mothers clutch their infants as waves batter the tiny boats, tossing them mercilessly through the darkness.Order your copy of the new Against the Odds book, How to Survive Against the Odds: Tales & Tips for Animal Attacks and Natural Disasters, for stories of everyday people confronted by life-or-death situations, showing you how they survived—and how you can too.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! Mix engineer Alex Gamble joins guest host Ben Givarz to discuss the creative and technical process behind mixing FKA twigs' new album Eusexua in Dolby Atmos®. He shares how his immersive mixes in Dolby Atmos enhance the record's intimacy, rhythm, and vocal playfulness — pushing boundaries while staying true to FKA twigs's artistic vision. “At that [early] stage, where I'm assessing the stems versus the master, I'm not trying to go overboard to do an exact match — because things are going to change once I start panning things around. Timbre and transients, and things like that — they change depending on where you choose to pan things in an Atmos environment. Things came in sounding so great. The productions were great: very intimate, very cerebral. Really big scene changes in a lot of these songs… and a lot of glitchy, cool elements too. That's one of the things I latched onto during my first listen… thinking, this is stuff that'll really be interesting to pull into three dimensions and see if I can build upon the production.”—Alex Gamble, Dolby Atmos Mix Engineer, Eusexua by FKA twigs Stay connected! - You can listen to FKA twigs - Eusexua as well as many other classic and contemporary artists in Dolby Atmos, on enabled streaming services. - Follow FKA twigs on Instagram and YouTube - Learn more about Alex Gamble and his studioInterested in creating content in Dolby Atmos? NOTE: This interview contains spoilers from both Black Mirror: “USS Callister” episodes. Join us as we boldly go behind the scenes of Black Mirror: “USS Callister: Into Infinity,” with the creative team behind the episode. In this panel, the director, composer, supervising sound editor, and VFX supervisor share how they brought the nightmarish galaxy of Robert Daly back to life with bold visuals, cinematic music, and immersive sound, as well as the reasons why this became the very first Black Mirror sequel ever. “It's really tricky when you come back and do a sequel of something. None of us wanted to work on something that was going to be any lesser than the original. And the original is… speaking for myself… the closest thing to a perfect episode. It has such a great beginning, middle and end. And it has such a great conclusion, it feels so wrapped up. Yet it's still a great launching point into a whole new recognizable world. But it's its own IP. And so I always knew that it had the potential to be a series or a sequel. I knew that I wanted to explore these characters in that world even further.”—Toby Haynes, Director, Black Mirror: “USS Callister: Into Infinity”Joining today's conversation: - Toby Haynes - Director - Tom Jenkins - Supervising Sound Editor - James MacLachlan - VFX Supervisor - Daniel Pemberton - Composer Be sure to check out Black Mirror: “USS Callister: Into Infinity,” now streaming on Netflix, in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos®.Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode on YouTube.Learn more about the Dolby Creator Lab and check out Dolby.com. Soon, a breach in the hull knocks out power, and the ship begins taking on water. As senior officers abandon ship, the fate of everyone on board falls to the ship's entertainers, who must lead a mass evacuation before the Oceanos vanishes beneath the waves.Order your copy of the new Against the Odds book, How to Survive Against the Odds: Tales & Tips for Animal Attacks and Natural Disasters, for stories of everyday people confronted by life-or-death situations, showing you how they survived—and how you can too.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! Director of Photography Adam Newport-Berra joins us to discuss his incredible work on “The Studio,” the hilarious behind-the-scenes satire now streaming on Apple TV+. The cinematographer shares how he helped co-creators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg pull off the show's bold cinematic concept: shooting nearly every scene as a continuous long take. Join us as we go behind the camera on episode two, “The Oner,” a technical and comedic marvel executed as one uninterrupted 25-minute shot. Newport-Berra details the challenges of capturing ensemble performances, navigating comedic timing, and using cinematography to enhance the absurdity of Hollywood. “I think one thing I really learned on this show is to just never say no... Seth and Evan really supported me and believed in me... and it created an environment where it was almost impossible to say no, because we were so creative that we were always able to come up with a solution.” —Adam Newport-Berra, Director of Photography, “The Studio” Be sure to check out “The Studio,” now streaming on AppleTV+, in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos®. This week we return to the stunning visual world of “Severance,” the critically acclaimed Apple TV+ series from creator Dan Erickson and director Ben Stiller. Cinematographer and fellow director Jessica Lee Gagné joins us to discuss her work on the show's second season, including how she crafted the eerie, sterile look of Lumon Industries and expanded the visual palette in new, unexpected ways. Jessica discusses her collaborative relationship with the creative team, the emotional and psychological subtext behind the framing, and how film was used to deepen the surreal, dreamlike atmosphere of the important flashbacks in episode 7, which she directed. “Life never looks more real and emotional than it does on film. Like it just has that texture... and I'm like, well, I feel that that makes so much sense with this world.” —Jessica Lee Gagné, Director of Photographer and Director, “Severance” Be sure to check out “Severance,” now streaming on AppleTV+, in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos®. We're on Patreon! Find us at https://www.patreon.com/AudioUnleashed This week, Dennis and Brent catch up with all the news we should have covered last episode, including the Harman acquisition of Sound United, and what it means for the fate of Bowers & Wilkins, Dolby, and the half-dozen audio dealers left in the U.S. Then they ask The Absolute Sound's philosopher-in-chief Tom Martin to blink twice if he's OK in his recent video about cable lifters before moving on to a discussion about guinea pigs being used as guinea pigs to answer science's pressing questions about compression (but not that kind of compression!).
Rescue helicopters finally reach the campers, Sue and Bruce, as well as other stranded survivors like TV reporter David Crockett and logger Jim Scymanky. But with nightfall approaching, Sue worries that rescuers won't be able to find her injured friends, Dan Balch and Brian Thomas, in time. With the roads onto the mountain impassible, blocked by trees and debris, rescuers' only chance of reaching survivors quickly is by helicopter. But the thick ash blanketing the landscape makes landing the copters a major challenge — if ash gets caught in the rotors, they risk crashing. Meanwhile, the logging team and the campers who suffered severe burns are in desperate need of medical attention. As their chance of surviving dwindles, camper Sue Ruff faces the repercussions of deciding to leave her friends behind. NOTE: This episode contains SPOILERS from the second season and season finale of Severance. Today we let Kier guide us into the extraordinary sound work of season two of "Severance," the hit Apple TV+ series from creator Dan Erickson and director Ben Stiller. Focusing on the groundbreaking storytelling of episodes 207 and 210, Supervising Sound Editor, Sound Designer, and Re-recording Mixer Jacob Ribicoff, Re-recording Mixer Bob Chefalas, and David Schwartz (the Production Sound Mixer on those two episodes), break down how they crafted the show's eerie, minimalist sonic landscape. They explore everything from the show's surreal dreamlike ambiences and rhythmic sound/music interplay, to that unforgettable marching band sequence in the season finale. “One of the primary objectives, according to Ben [Stiller], was that Lumon should be a quiet place, a place with the air sucked out of it… I thought, wouldn't that be really interesting to create room tones out of breathing, out of breath, and actually just fold those in and mix those in with normal room tones? So there's kind of some animal breath and some human breath in there — like, very long… just a breath that just goes on for an entire scene.” —Jacob Ribicoff, Supervising Sound Editor, Sound Designer, and Re-recording Mixer, “Severance” Be sure to check out “Severance,” now streaming on AppleTV+, in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos®. Join Oliver Dolby as he unlocks the ancient portal to healing through the forgotten Left-Handed Path of Isis. In this powerful soul transmission, we journey through the corrupted rituals of ancient Egypt, the rise of divine feminine energy, and the multidimensional healing that takes place when we reclaim our place at the center of creation. ✨ Are the pyramids just tombs—or spiritual machines for consciousness expansion? ✨ Can past-life trauma echo through the body in this lifetime? ✨ What happens when the goddess Isis awakens you… and demands your transformation? This is not your typical New Age dialogue. This is a reckoning with the misuse of sacred power, the distortion of masculine archetypes, and a call to spiritual sovereignty in an age of awakening. 00:00:00 – The Pyramid Within: Ancient Tools & Corrupted Power 00:04:53 – Reworking Ancient Rituals for the 21st Century 00:09:46 – The Left-Handed Path of Isis: Feminine Awakening Begins 00:14:39 – Healing Through the Divine Feminine & the Wounded Masculine 00:19:32 – From Suffering to Center: Embodying Infinite Reality 00:24:25 – Remembering Egypt: Sacrifice, Power & Past-Life Trauma 00:29:18 – Distortion in Egyptian Magic: From Enlightenment to Control 00:34:11 – Isis Returns: Facing False Gods, Ego Death & Awakening 00:39:04 – Leaving Old Orders: Breaking Free from Spiritual Control 00:43:57 – The Hard Path of Light: Why We Chose the Storm Presented by Oliver Dolby: Originally from South Africa and now based in London, Oliver has spent 25 years on a journey of healing and self-discovery. Supervising Sound Editor, Re-recording Mixer, and Sound Designer Mixer David Acord and Supervising Sound Editor and Dialogue & ADR Supervisor Margit Pfeiffer join us to discuss the powerful, visceral sound of the final season of "Andor." As one of the darkest and most grounded series in the Star Wars galaxy, "Andor" features a deeply cinematic soundscape — ranging from brutal hand-to-hand combat to haunting silence, immersive crowd scenes, and intentionally fuzzy radio transmissions. David and Margit break down their collaborative process, the evolution of the sonic language across the series, and how they used Dolby Atmos® to bring audiences even deeper into the world of espionage, rebellion, and sacrifice.“We want to make sure that the audience feels the threat and the danger of these weapons. Mix engineer and recording engineer Jayda Love, along with Dolby Atmos® mix engineer Juan Razuri, join guest host Ben Givarz to discuss their work on Doechii's Grammy®-winning mixtape, “Alligator Bites Never Heal,” which took home Best Rap Album at the 2025 GRAMMY Awards® and earned nominations for Best Rap Performance and Best New Artist. In this episode, Jayda and Juan break down their creative process — from initial recording sessions in Los Angeles to the immersive final mixes in Dolby Atmos.“A lot of the vocal production stuff — as a recording engineer — I'll help with layering and blending. That's a big thing for her. But a lot of the time, in terms of volume and placement and stuff, she's very hands-on. She'll be like, ‘I need those higher.' And naturally, as an engineer, ‘I'm like, these are a little too loud.' But then I'll finally get an ear break or hear it take a step back and I'm like, ‘oh, she's very particular about this stuff, especially the presence of her voice.' Fifteen years ago, actor Lili Taylor took a sabbatical and spent time at her house in upstate New York. There, in the quiet, she started to listen. As she writes, "I started to hear birds. It was as if I'd switched my studio input from one dimension to Dolby stereo." It changed her perception of the world. In her new book of essays Turning to Birds: The Power and Beauty of Noticing, she writes about her encounters with the natural world, what she has gained by paying attention to her surroundings, and how her connection with nature helps her find peace and calm.

Guest host Alistair Hirst returns to Dolby Creator Talks to speak with the audio team behind "Star Wars Outlaws," one of the most successful games of last year. Developed by Ubisoft's Massive Entertainment in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, the title delivers a rich, cinematic gameplay experience — thanks to its immersive sound design and dynamic score. Recently nominated for a BAFTA in Audio Achievement, the team shares how they built the game's soundscape from the ground up, mixing original Star Wars recordings with new field material to create unique environments, iconic weapons, and vehicles. They also explain how Dolby Atmos® was used to deepen the spatial realism — from starships above to rain on rooftops — and how their creative approach to sound design gave the game its gritty, signature edge.“First and foremost, we landed on three main pillars... The first of them being a cinematic experience... We really wanted to tell a story using audio... The second was making it a true and authentic Star Wars experience... And finally, we coined the phrase we call the scoundrel sound... It's about keeping the grit from the original trilogy, but also updating the sounds to make them sound fresh and new.”—Simon Koudriavtsev, Audio Director, "Star Wars Outlaws"Joining today's conversation from Massive Entertainment: - Simon Koudriavtsev - Audio Director - Jacob Coles - Lead Audio Designer - Martin Weissberg - Principal Audio Designer - Simon Siegfried Klar - Senior Audio DesignerBe sure to check out "Star Wars Outlaws," available now in Dolby Atmos®, on supported platforms. Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode on YouTube.Learn more about the Dolby Creator Lab and check out Dolby.com. On this week's show we discuss whether physical media is making a comeback and could a Bezel-less OLED be the future of large format TVs. We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: Google kills off Nest Protect, partners with First Alert for new smart smoke detector Christie to collaborate with Dolby to develop the next generation of Dolby Vision laser projection systems YouTube Sees Record Viewing, Beats Disney in TV Viewing Share Other: 2025 Box-Office Aims To Hit $34 Billion Physical media is finally making a comeback, and here's the proof Despite a decline in overall physical media sales, which dipped below $1 billion in 2024, there are signs of resilience and growth in specific sectors. Major retailers like Best Buy and Target are phasing out physical media, but Sony's announcement of a new Blu-ray player, the UBP-X700/K, set for release in 2025, signals continued investment in the format. This player, while currently only available in Japan, supports 4K Blu-rays, which are region-free and growing in market share despite the higher cost compared to its predecessor. There is a niche but dedicated community keeping physical media alive, supported by boutique retailers like Criterion Collection and Arrow, which preserve films such as David Lynch's catalog, including the upcoming 4K release of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. Mainstream releases still often get physical versions, and affordable options abound online and in thrift stores, offering DVDs, Blu-rays, and 4K discs compatible with modern players. There are personal advantages of physical ownership, like better quality and reliability compared to streaming, which can be plagued by shifting availability and rising costs. While consoles may soon abandon disc drives and companies like LG have discontinued Blu-ray players, the 4K Blu-ray market is a bright spot, with growing demand evidenced by the sell-out of Oppenheimer's 4K release in 2023. The new Sony player supports Dolby Vision (though it requires manual toggling), enhancing the viewing experience over consoles like Xbox or PS5. The article concludes that 2025 is an opportune time to embrace physical media, especially for those frustrated with streaming, as it offers a tangible, cost-effective alternative with no risk of content disappearing—though it comes with minor inconveniences like disc-swapping for TV binges. The future remains uncertain, but the 4K sector offers hope for collectors. Full article here… Bezel-less tile OLED TVs could be the future of large-screen displays (from Tom's Guide) Samsung Display showcased a variety of innovative display technologies at MWC 2025, with a standout being their "bezel-less" OLED tile design. This concept involves combining smaller OLED panels, such as two 31.5-inch QD-OLED screens, to form larger displays with significantly reduced bezels—40% narrower than typical current market offerings. This makes the seams nearly invisible from a standard viewing distance, opening up possibilities for future OLED TV designs. The bezel-less OLED tiles could revolutionize large-screen TVs by improving portability and setup logistics. Unlike traditional massive TVs (e.g., 98- or 110-inch models), which are cumbersome and costly to ship and install, these tiles could be transported and assembled in smaller, manageable parts—ideal for urban dwellers in older buildings with limited access. Additionally, the design might simplify wall-mounting, potentially eliminating the need for complex mounts by allowing the tiles to sit flush against walls, reminiscent of concepts like Displace TV's suction-cup OLEDs. This technology could particularly enhance lifestyle TVs, such as Samsung's The Frame, by offering a sleek, frameless look that blends seamlessly into home decor. However, challenges remain—similar to MicroLED, the intricate engineering might make these TVs prohibitively expensive initially. While not yet ready for consumers, Samsung Display's tile concept hints at an exciting future for bigger, better, and more practical OLED TVs. Full article here… Let's Discuss Why This is a Good Thing: Easier Transport and Setup for Large TVs Simplified Wall-Mounting Enhanced Design for Lifestyle TVs Scalability and Customization Improved Visual Experience Easier Transport and Setup for Large TVs The tiled OLED concept tackles the logistical nightmare of moving and installing massive TVs. By breaking a large display (like a 115-inch screen) into smaller, manageable pieces (e.g., two 31.5-inch QD-OLED panels), it becomes far more practical to transport and assemble. This is a game-changer for people in tricky living situations—like those in high-rise apartments with no elevators or tight staircases—where hauling a giant, crated TV is a non-starter. Instead of wrestling with one unwieldy unit, you'd handle smaller components, making setup less of a Herculean task. Simplified Wall-Mounting The ultra-thin, virtually bezel-less design hints at a future where wall-mounting could be a breeze. These tiles seem to sit flush against surfaces, potentially reducing or even eliminating the need for bulky wall mounts and toolkits. While it's not clear if they'd use something like suction cups (à la Displace TV) or another method, the streamlined look suggests a setup that's less about drilling and more about placement. This could make mounting a TV—especially over a fireplace or in tight spaces—more accessible and less intimidating. Enhanced Design for Lifestyle TVs The bezel-less tile concept aligns perfectly with the aesthetic goals of lifestyle TVs, like Samsung's The Frame. A flush, frameless display could elevate the “TV as art” vibe, blending seamlessly into home decor. You could even add a custom frame around the tiles if desired, keeping the versatility intact. This design flexibility could redefine how TVs integrate into living spaces, making them less of an obtrusive tech piece and more of a stylish feature. Scalability and Customization Tiling smaller OLED panels to create a larger screen opens up possibilities for scalable TV sizes. Want a 65-inch TV today but a 98-inch tomorrow? In theory, you could add more tiles. While this might not be fully practical yet, the modular nature suggests a future where screen size isn't fixed at purchase, offering a level of adaptability that current TVs lack. Improved Visual Experience Shrinking bezels by 40% compared to standard displays means the seams between tiles are nearly invisible at normal viewing distances. This creates a more immersive, uninterrupted picture—crucial for OLED's strengths like deep blacks and vibrant colors. It's a step toward making massive OLED screens feel cohesive rather than patchwork, enhancing the viewing experience for movies, gaming, or VR applications. It's Not All Good News: Cost and Accessibility Manufacturing and Durability Challenges Installation Complexity Wall-Mounting Uncertainties Potential Visual Trade-Offs Cost and Accessibility Complex engineering often leads to high costs. Much like MicroLED TVs, which are expensive due to their manufacturing processes, these bezel-less OLED tiles could follow a similar path. If they hit the market, they might be priced out of reach for the average consumer. Manufacturing and Durability Challenges Shrinking bezels by 40% and tiling multiple panels together sounds impressive, but it raises questions about production complexity and long-term durability. Seamlessly connecting 31.5-inch QD-OLED panels could introduce weak points where the tiles meet, potentially leading to issues like uneven wear, panel misalignment over time, or vulnerability to damage during transport or installation. The "bezel-less" claim might also exaggerate real-world performance if micro-gaps or seams remain faintly visible up close. Installation Complexity While the concept promises to simplify transporting and setting up XXL TVs by breaking them into smaller components, the assembly process could still be a hurdle. Consumers might need precise instructions—or even professional help—to align and connect the tiles perfectly. If the panels don't lock together intuitively or require specialized tools, the setup could negate some of the portability benefits, especially for less tech-savvy users. Wall-Mounting Uncertainties The idea of tiles sitting flush against the wall (possibly without traditional mounts) is appealing, but it's unclear how practical this would be. If Samsung Display isn't using suction cups like Displace TV, the attachment method remains a mystery. Adhesive solutions could damage walls or lose strength over time, while a lack of standard mounting hardware might make the TVs harder to secure safely, especially in homes with kids or pets. The "glued-on" aesthetic might also limit repositioning or removal flexibility. Potential Visual Trade-Offs Tiling multiple OLED panels could introduce subtle visual inconsistencies, such as slight color or brightness variations between tiles, especially as they age. While the bezels are minimized, any imperfections in alignment or panel uniformity might become noticeable during close viewing or in scenes with solid colors, detracting from the premium OLED experience consumers expect.

In August of the year 2000, four American rock climbers set out to explore the majesty of the Pamir Alai Mountain range in Kyrgyzstan. But only a week into their expedition, they're taken captive by rebel militants. The group is forced to hike through brutal terrain under the cover of night to avoid detection by the Kyrgyz army. With little to no food or water provided by their captors, the young climbing team had to struggle through severe dehydration and hunger.
