The team behind Pottermore Publishing and Audible's “Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions” joins guest host Richard Addis to discuss one of the most ambitious audiobook productions ever attempted. Featuring more than 200 actors, original music, detailed sound design, and fully immersive Dolby Atmos® mixes, the series brings all seven books to life in a new way — while staying true to the text, the characters, and the world fans know so well. *NOTE: This interview may contain spoilers from the Harry Potter series.Joining today's conversation:- Ann Scantlebury - Head of Audio Development, Pottermore Publishing- Chris Jones - Senior Director of Production, Audible- Lawrence Kendrick - Co-creative Director, Sound Designer and Composer, String and Tins- Rob Baker - Head of Engineering, Forever Audio“We can take people on the Hogwarts Express. They can go through the doors into the Great Hall. They can hear the footsteps echoing. They can be there and they can have it all playing out around them. To us, that was incredibly appealing. What does Dolby Atmos actually mean in a car — and why does it matter more in a car than in your living room?In this episode of the evo India Podcast, Karan Grover, Senior Director at Dolby Labs, sits down with executive editor, Aatish Mishra to explain exactly how Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision work in cars, why a car is actually the most perfect listening environment Dolby has ever worked with, and why India is doing things in car audio that have never been done anywhere else in the world. The conversation covers the detail that will stop most people cold: AR Rahman composed 1,100 individual chimes for the Mahindra BE6 and BE9, all mixed in Dolby Atmos — so when a warning sound tells you there is an obstruction on your left, it genuinely comes from your left. That is not a gimmick. That is object-based audio design applied to a car's entire sound ecosystem.Karan explains how Dolby Atmos goes from a recording studio to a streaming platform to your car's speakers, why the car is the only listening environment where every speaker position and every seat position is fixed — which makes it the ideal space for Atmos tuning — and how Mahindra Auto became the first manufacturer in the world to put Dolby Atmos on a 4-channel non-branded speaker setup in the XUV 3XO. Mahindra also pushed Dolby to deliver Atmos on the Thar, previously thought impossible at that speaker configuration. Both were firsts. Both happened in India. The episode also covers the Mercedes-AMG GT63 Electric's synthesized V8 sound and whether it is tuned in Dolby Atmos, how EVs are changing the science of sound design because there is no engine masking the audio environment, why Apple CarPlay supports Atmos playback and what Android's recent update means for wireless Atmos in cars, and where car audio goes from here — including the possibility of film premieres in cars and Dolby Atmos eventually reaching buses, tractors and auto-rickshaws. He also talks about the various cars which have Dolby Atmos like the XUV 7XO, the Maruti Suzuki Victoris, Tata Sierra and more. Dolby currently works with 38 automobile manufacturers and over 150 car nameplates globally.

Sam Witwer — the voice of Maul himself! — joins us alongside supervising director and executive producer Brad Rau and supervising sound editor, sound designer, and re-recording mixer David W. Collins to discuss the voice, sound, and cinematic scale of “Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord.” Together, they explore how the series deepens one of Star Wars' most iconic villains, from Witwer's layered vocal performance and Maul's emotional complexity to the show's bold sound design and Dolby Atmos® mix. Collins also reflects on carrying forward the sonic legacy of Skywalker Sound, while staying open to the strange, unexpected discoveries that have always helped make Star Wars sound like Star Wars.“Sounds can come to you at the most random times. It really is that random encounter with something that sounds funny that ends up being the gold. When I was doing recording for the next season, there's stuff that I recorded and whether I use it or not, I'm still not sure, but I'm building a library constantly by finding stuff that sounds really interesting around the house. I told this story once where I was at my daughter's game and I thought the smack of an aluminum bat would be a great element inside a laser blast, because it has that wonderful tink and echo that you could put a real low end thud in the front of that and it would be this weird thing you could process. I've done that... I just try and keep my ears open and try and learn from Ben Burtt or anyone at Skywalker that has told similar stories, because it's usually the happy accidents that cause something unexpected, which Star Wars is all about.”—David W. Kevin Mack, the new president of Via Licensing Alliance, joins Eli for the Clause 8 season finale.Kevin talks about Via's plans to build its next patent pools around "de facto" standards — technology the market adopted on its own, with no standards body behind it — which would push collaborative licensing into territory it has never touched. Mack also takes a hard look at the royalty-free models spreading through tech and AI, from AV1 to the new Shared AI License Foundation (SAIL), argues that "free" rarely stays free, and explains why he's optimistic about where the patent system is heading.Kevin and Eli also discuss:*Via's model and the "tipping point" that turns a pool from a few licensors into thousands of licensees*"De facto" standards: pooling patents for technology no standards body ever blessed*Leadership turnover at Via, the HEVC pool's move to Access Advance, and a new strategy-and-growth group*The push into semiconductors, including a new DRAM memory program*AV1, SAIL, and why Mack thinks royalty-free rarely stays free*Whether AI patents are as "foundational" as advertised — and why "AI is not new"*Efficient infringement, patents as property rights, and why companies ultimately take a license*The mood out of Via's Rome summit and a US patent system tilting back toward ownersNotable names, companies & standardsPeople: Kevin Mack (president, Via Licensing Alliance); Heath Hoglund (former Via president); John Amster (Jamster Capital; RPX co-founder)Organizations: Via Licensing Alliance (Via LA), MPEG LA, Dolby, Access Advance, Alliance for Open Media, Shared AI License Foundation (SAIL), WIPO (PatentScope), DOJ, USPTOSAIL founders / board (public): Anthropic, Genentech, IBM, Meta, Microsoft; board observers eBay and TD Bank Group; members include Block and FigmaStandards & technologies: AAC, AVC (H.264), HEVC (H.265), AV1, MPEG-2, Qi wireless charging, DRAM memory, SEP / FRANDDisclaimer This is a public episode. The sound of “Stranger Things” has always been huge, cinematic, and unmistakably its own — and the series finale takes that signature style to its most epic scale yet. In this conversation, supervising sound editor Craig Henighan, re-recording mixer Mark Paterson, and dialogue and ADR supervisor Ryan Cole join us to discuss bringing the final chapter to life, from the sonic DNA first established in season one, to the massive battles and emotional moments that define the end of the series. They also break down how the team balanced all of that scale and intensity without losing clarity, dynamics, or the emotional release that makes all “that chaos" work. “The tricky bit is to kind of embrace a lot of that chaos. It's usually like some Demogorgon screaming and just everything's all going on at once. But the key to it is that that chaos ends and you feel that release. That's kind of what makes the audience feel safe. So it's a tricky balance to work out, ‘how clean do we go in, in terms of mixing here, to hear everything else?' We always work through that with the [Duffer Brothers], as well.” —Mark Paterson, Re-recording Mixer, “Stranger Things” season 5 Be sure to check out “Stranger Things,” now streaming on Netflix, in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos®. “Tuner” is a rare film where sound is not only essential to the cinematic experience — it is central to the story itself. Today we welcome back Academy Award®-winning sound designer, supervising sound editor, and re-recording mixer Johnnie Burn, joined by the film's star Leo Woodall, to discuss how they brought audiences inside the world of Niki, a piano tuner with hyperacusis whose acute hearing makes him an expert safe cracker. Together, they explore how sound shapes the film's tension, romance, and point of view, from delicate safe-cracking rhythms and subjective hearing shifts to put the audience directly inside Niki's head.“You should see it in a movie theater because it really is a film where the experience of a movie theater can take you so much closer to the feeling of what the main character actually has. So it's quite a one-off opportunity in that.”—Johnnie Burn, Sound Designer, Supervising Sound Editor, and Re-Recording Mixer, “Tuner”Be sure to check out “Tuner,” now playing in theaters, in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos® where available. Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode on YouTube.Learn more about the Dolby Creator Lab and check out Dolby.com. The capture of American nurses in the Philippines is often described as an “untold story” of WWII; Dr. Elizabeth Norman set out to change that. She conducted extensive interviews with 20 of the 77 nurses who were captured. Norman collected the nurses' firsthand accounts, and pored over their diaries and letters, weaving these sources together in her book, We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of the American Women Trapped on Bataan. Prisoners are resorting to desperate acts to survive as they're pushed to the physical and psychological brink. The nurses are also malnourished and struggling to care for their fellow prisoners. But the tide of the war has finally turned and an ambitious U.S. Army paratrooper named Henry Muller is developing a plan to liberate the camp. Today we welcome acclaimed horror filmmaker Lee Cronin back to the show, alongside sound designer and supervising sound editor Peter Albrechtsen, to discuss their delightfully gory new horror film, “Lee Cronin's The Mummy.” As with their previous collaboration, 2023's hit “Evil Dead Rise,” Cronin and Albrechtsen embraced sound design from the earliest stages of the creative process, using it not only for maximum impact, but also to sharpen the film's storytelling.“I actually found the edit on this one quite stressful… We would have been in big trouble without early sound in it. Because of the way it was written and the nature of it, and how the tension needed to be built. At times, it was quite hard to find the shape of scenes without sound that was very, very clear in its signposting of where we were headed, ultimately. Sometimes you're cutting something and you can dig into a bit of a library, but quite early on we actually needed design to help us craft the sequences.”—Lee Cronin, Director and Writer, “Lee Cronin's The Mummy”Be sure to check out “Lee Cronin's The Mummy,” now playing in theaters and Dolby Cinemas® in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos®.Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode on YouTube.Learn more about the Dolby Creator Lab and check out Dolby.com. In the early '80s, Thomas Dolby burst onto the pop music scene with his worldwide hit, She Blinded Me With Science. The song hailed from his debut album , The Golden Age of Wireless, and not only was it both musically and lyrically a brilliant pop song, the entire album was a masterful orchestration of synth programming that resulted in layered, lush soundscapes. Dolby masterfully shifted synth-pop from cold, mechanical textures to a warm, emotional, and highly narrative form, blending pioneering studio production with retro-futurist themes. Legendary mix engineer Kevin Madigan joins us to discuss his pioneering work helping create Santana's live Dolby Atmos residency at House of Blues in Las Vegas and what it takes to reimagine one of rock's most iconic sounds for a live audience. He also reflects on his work at Larrabee Studios in Los Angeles, building out the Dolby Atmos® room and mixing music from Santana's landmark album “Supernatural.” “The music felt 3D and you were immersed in it. And we do have a lot of elements to do that with the Santana band and within the music. There's a lot of percussion, keyboards, B3, congas… So, bringing that out into an immersive feeling [for] the audience was kind of easy to do! And if there was cool moves to do at certain points in a song… it can do a rotation around the audience. It's a really cool moment for the audience, but it's not distracting, it's not gimmicky… The audience got used to it pretty quick. It just sounded like a huge, immersive mix that's really engaging and magnetic and draws the audience into the song.” —Kevin Madigan, FOH Mix Engineer, SantanaStay connected! - Listen to Kevin Madigan's mixes of tracks from Santana's “Supernatural” album, as well as many other classic and contemporary artists in Dolby Atmos, on enabled streaming services. Composer Daniel Pemberton returns to Dolby Creator Talks to discuss his inventive new original score for “Project Hail Mary.” In conversation with guest host Jon Burlingame, Pemberton breaks down how he built a custom musical language for the film using everything from wooden blocks, body percussion, treated vocals, bowls of water, and even a squeaky water tap recorded on his iPhone. He also reflects on balancing the film's vast sci-fi scale with its intimate emotional core, and how experimentation, failure, and discovery shaped one of his most ambitious scores yet.“Developing all your own sounds… I call it mixing your own paints. You've basically spend a long time mixing paint colors rather than buying it off the shelf. And that's how you get stuff that feels very original, like this. And I've got millions of these and most of them don't work. You spend ages when you experiment. When you have time to fail, you have time to create ... Hopefully there'll be something in there that'll work.”—Daniel Pemberton, Composer, “Project Hail Mary”Be sure to check out “Project Hail Mary” now in theaters in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos®.Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode on YouTube.Learn more about the Dolby Creator Lab and check out Dolby.com. On the evening of July 27, 1985, a group of friends decided to ignore gathering storm clouds and warnings as they climbed to the top of Yosemite's famous Half Dome. Climbers Adrian Esteban and Tom Rice reached the summit first, soon joined by three others as a thunderstorm raged. They decided to shelter in a small cave-like enclosure — a decision that would prove deadly. Audible subscribers can listen to all episodes of Against the Odds ad-free right now. Getting a project made in the entertainment industry can be a mystifying process. But one thing is for sure: nothing would happen without the Hollywood assistants who help champion them and assist (and, yes, sometimes cajole) the executives into getting a green light. To help shed some light on all this, filmmaker Carlos López Estrada hosts another insightful Satellite Session, featuring a panel of top executives, producers, agents, and assistants, to explain how Hollywood assistants work, and why they are so essential to the entertainment industry. As well as how it could be a pathway “in,” for those of you aspiring to build a career here yourselves.Joining the discussion: - Abhijay Prakash – President of Blumhouse - Keenen Kunsh – Assistant to Abhijay Prakash, Blumhouse - Christina Chou – Motion Picture Literary Agent, CAA - Brendan Kim – Assistant to Christina Chou, CAA - Mindy Ramaker – Creative Producer and Former Assistant to David Lynch - Caroline Tsai – Assistant to Jenn Han (“The Summer I Turned Pretty”)This is another installment of our ongoing “Satellite Sessions” series, which we're bringing to you in partnership with Antigravity Academy and the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment. The storm was especially brutal for children trying to find their way home from rural schoolhouses. Author David Laskin joins host Mike Corey to talk about how he pieced together the stories of the blizzard, and how the event lives on in the memory of their descendants. Laskin is the award-winning author of The Children's Blizzard, and The Family.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! With few landmarks on the flat prairie, even residents who knew the area well found themselves disoriented. Children like Walter Allen and Lena Woebbecke became lost in the furious storm, desperately trying to make it to safety.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more!
