In 1980, Foreigner — after parting ways with keyboardist Ian McDonald and guitarist and vocalist Al Greenwood — went into Electric Lady Studios in New York City to record their fourth album. The aptly titled 4 was released in July 1981, and thanks to such hits as "Juke Box Hero," "Waiting on a Girl Like You" and "Urgent," spent more time on the Billboard 200 than any other artist in the history of Atlantic Records, including AC/DC, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. To celebrate the 44th anniversary of 4, Rhino Records has released a deluxe version that includes newly remastered stereo and Atmos mixes, 14 early and alternate versions of various songs, 15 instrumentals, and 15 live performances from around the globe. This one-hour special contains songs from this reissue along with insights from Mick Jones and Lou Gramm. Come join us and enjoy some fantastic Rock and Roll music that DESERVES to be heard!
"Music's too fun not to have fun making music." In this episode, I talk with Chris Andrews, a seasoned producer, mix, and mastering engineer who has worked with artists across the globe. From his Dolby-approved Atmos studio, Monument Sound, nestled at 7,400 feet in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Chris delivers stunning immersive mixes that compete at the highest level of the music industry. His story begins in a basement studio in Virginia and evolves through years of military service, technical refinement, and relentless creativity. We talk about Chris's current studio setup, his go-to tools like the SSL Sigma, and how Forte AI and Soundflow are revolutionizing his workflow. He shares advice for audio professionals on avoiding debt, maximizing creativity, and treating music as both an art and a business. This one's packed with insight and inspiration! Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Chris Andrews, a 25-year veteran producer, mix, and mastering engineer based in Monument, Colorado. He got his start running TBR Studio—The Basement Recording Studio—for seven years before moving to Denver in 2007, where he balanced a day job while refining his craft by night. That dedication led to the creation of Monument Sound, a private studio set 7,400 feet up in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. In 2022, he leveled up his studio with a Dolby-approved ATMOS mixing room, allowing him to deliver immersive, three-dimensional mixes that help artists compete in today's evolving audio world. While he's worked with artists all over the globe across many genres, his heart is in rock, pop, and country. And when he's not mixing music, he's lending his post-audio talents to indie film projects. “Surround yourself with people you admire.” In this episode of Recording Studio Rockstars, I had the pleasure of talking with Brendan Duffey, a multi-Grammy-nominated mix and mastering engineer with nearly 30 years of experience. Brendan has worked with legends like Kendrick Lamar, Sheryl Crow, Milton Nascimento, and Bruce Dickinson—best known as the iconic lead singer of Iron Maiden and a legendary solo artist in his own right. Brendan brings a deep understanding of both the technical and emotional sides of music production. We talked about everything from his early days teaching audio engineering—where he learned how to explain complex concepts in simple ways—to his approach to mixing and mastering across different genres. Brendan shared what it was like to remix and master much of Bruce Dickinson's solo catalog, how he thinks about low-end in hip-hop, and why sometimes a mistake in the studio can lead to your most exciting creative breakthrough. He also opened up about how vocal production has changed over the years, moving from an auditory process to a more visual one, and why he believes simplicity, emotional connection, and knowing your tools inside and out are what really make a mix come alive. Brendan reminded me that mixing isn't just about the gear or the plugins—it's about bringing out the best in the performance and creating something that moves people. This was a killer episode with tons of great insight, whether you're just starting out or deep in your career. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Brendan Duffey, an award-winning mix and mastering engineer with 21 nominations to his name. Based in Jupiter, Florida, Brendan has nearly three decades of experience delivering world-class sound for artists across genres, including Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, Kendrick Lamar, Milton Nascimento, and Sheryl Crow. For 10 years, Brendan owned and operated a major recording facility in São Paulo, Brazil, before relocating to California to focus on mixing and mastering. He later moved to Jupiter in search of a better quality of life for his family. Brendan holds a B.A. in Recording Arts from CSU Chico and a Master's degree in Music Business from Berklee College of Music. Thank you to Matt Boudreau for the introduction our NAMM meetup! The Nature Of is a new podcast series from the nonprofit nature and culture magazine Atmos that speaks with prominent figures in conservation and culture about how humans relate to the natural world, and how they might heal and strengthen that relationship. On this episode of Mongabay's podcast, its host and Atmos editor-in-chief Willow Defebaugh details the series' resulting revelations and why her publication covers the environment through the lens of community, identity, arts and culture. “From the beginning, we knew that we wanted to invite creative storytellers and artists into this conversation alongside scientists and journalists,” she explains. Storytelling and the arts, she says, house rarely tapped potential for helping people place themselves in the context of nature: “I think that what we need is to be changing people's hearts, not just minds.” Defebaugh also highlights how little individual action is actually needed to inspire greater collective action among the public, a fact that Harvard researchers revealed: only 3.5% of the public needs to be engaged in non-violent resistance for a movement to succeed. What does it take to build the ultimate dream studio? Grammy-winning producer, engineer, and guitarist David Kalmusky returns to the show to share his journey of designing Addiction Sound Studios and how it's shaped his approach to music production. Known for his work with John Oates, Journey, Shawn Mendes, and many more, David talks about the importance of studio setups, the magic of drums and microphones in recording, and how technology has changed the way we make records. We talked about drive-by sessions, archiving sounds for future inspiration, and why it matters to always have gear ready to capture a great performance. David also reflected on Nashville's rich musical history, the legacy of instruments, and personal connections with legendary artists. In the second half, we talked about quality over quantity when it comes to instruments, the creative use of high-strung guitars, and the process of setting up an Atmos room for immersive mixing. David shared his thoughts on curating a creative space, navigating sound libraries, and how streaming has impacted music careers. We also got into the business side of things—like understanding royalties and publishing—and why internships can be such a valuable path for new producers. It's undeniable that the merits of diversity lay at the heart of David Bottrill's vast discography. With artists like Peter Gabriel, Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, Muse, Silverchair, Staind and Rush, David's work spans genres and generations, lending to a sound that is both familiar and progressive. He's cultivated the aggressive hard-rock palette of bands like Stone Sour, Godsmack, and Mastodon, while maintaining a connection to other ends of the spectrum with artists like Afrocelt Sound System, IAMX, and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. With three Grammy Awards and the success of millions of copies sold worldwide, David has produced and mixed platinum and gold career-defining albums that have established paradigms and redefined genres. “I prefer to work on music that has a strong identity and shows elements of originality,” David states, “genre isn't really important.” It's this focus on identity and potential that inspires David to push artists to curate the best of themselves and make music that defines who they are in that moment. And yet, even in their individuality, each album that David works on distinctly shows his fingerprint. David spent 20 years living in the UK and has just built a new Atmos mix and overdub studio in the greater Toronto area in his native country of Canada, although he still spends much of his time working with artists in various international locations. David has recently retired from the board of directors for Make Music Matter, but still supports the non-profit that uses the creation of music and socially conscious art to help heal trauma in marginalized communities and individuals. Through Make Music Matter, David found an outlet for his experience, truly helping better the lives of others and bringing awareness to the community at large.IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN:Balancing the artist's vision vs giving people “what they want”Mixing in subgroupsBuilding mix templates to maximize creativity and speedCarving space in the low end to get clarityMixing with a subwooferThe downside of using reverbKnowing when to step away from a mix and restart later To learn more about David, visit: https://www.davidbottrill.com/Looking for 1-on-1 feedback and training to help you create pro-quality mixes?Check out my coaching program Amplitude and apply to join:https://masteryourmix.com/amplitude/ Want additional help with your music productions? For tips on how to improve your mixes, visit: https://masteryourmix.com/ Download your FREE copy of the Ultimate Mixing Blueprint: https://masteryourmix.com/blueprint/ Get your copy of my Amazon #1 bestselling books:The Recording Mindset: A Step-By-Step Guide to Creating Pro Recordings From Your Home Studio: https://therecordingmindset.com The Mixing Mindset: The Step-By-Step Formula For Creating Professional Rock Mixes From Your Home Studio: https://masteryourmix.com/mixingmindsetbook/ Check out our Sponsors:Download Waves Plugins here: https://waves.alzt.net/EK3G2K Subscribe to the show:Apple Podcasts:

Follow Biz on IG:https://www.instagram.com/jacobbizmorrisTimestamp:1:03 Building a Team vs. Handling it AllBiz emphasizes the benefits of artists building a team from the outset, highlighting that it reduces stress, allows for shared workload, and enables everyone to grow financially as the artist succeeds. He notes that while some artists can do everything themselves, it often leads to burnout.2:36 Artist Mixing Their Own MusicBiz acknowledges that some artists are capable of producing good mixes, especially when they are trying to maintain a specific vibe. However, he believes the majority of artists who mix their own music should stop, as the quality is often not up to par. He attributes this to "demo-it is," where artists become too accustomed to the sound of their self-mixed demos.3:58 Impact of Mix Quality on StreamsBiz explains that a bad mix can lead to a high skip rate on streaming platforms, meaning artists don't get paid if listeners don't make it past 30 seconds. He also points out that poor mix quality can hinder a song from being placed on playlists or accepted by influencers, as it can reflect poorly on their brand.6:26 Defining a Good MixA good mix, according to Biz, translates well across all devices (car, AirPods, Bluetooth speakers) and has no distractions, allowing the listener to fully grasp the artist's vision and emotion. A bad mix often has buried or muddy vocals, excessive reverb, or poor-sounding drums.9:20 Biz's Background and Favorite GenresBiz shares his journey, starting as a recording engineer at 14 and falling in love with mixing after moving to Atlanta in 2012. He has worked with artists like Lrae, David Kushner, and Surfaces. While a majority of his credits are in hip-hop, he enjoys mixing pop music more due to the challenge of achieving a clean, pristine sound.13:09 AI in Mixing and MasteringBiz sees AI mastering as useful for creating better-sounding demos, especially for producers and songwriters pitching songs. However, he believes AI mixing is not yet good. He recounts his past experience with an automated mixing service ("Mixed") which, while successful for some tracks, was ultimately shut down because artists preferred human engineers. He emphasizes that people seek human artists for their unique point of view and taste.allowing artists to submit notes through a dashboard.21:29 Spatial Audio Biz is a fan of Atmos, believing it makes records sound better. He highlights that Apple Music pays 10% higher royalties for songs provided in spatial audio, even if the Atmos version isn't played. He built his studio to support Atmos mixing to help independent artists "play the game" and compete with major labels that have more resources.• 27:50 Responsible AI Training and OwnershipBiz raises questions about how AI song creators acquire their data models, suggesting they might be scraping from DSPs like Spotify and YouTube. He discusses the challenge of creating an AI mixing model due to the need for vast amounts of diverse genre data, which major labels primarily own. He expresses concern that labels might create AI mixing platforms that save them money without necessarily benefiting the artist.38:48 "Too Cheap to be Good" PerceptionBiz addresses the perception that "Get Mixed" is too cheap to offer good quality. He assures that the quality, gear, setup, and studio are the same as his high-end services, but the lower price is due to the streamlined system and convenience. He also acknowledges that some artists find the price too high, leading him to offer discounts. This channel is ran by the founders of No Labels Necessary, Sean "Brandman" Taylor and Jacorey "Kohrey" Barkley.
