Marv opens with a trailer for the podcast, But You Can't Stay Here, about a move from the US back to Lima, Peru in 2024 and the pull between two homes as their three-year anniversary approaches. He follows with two bonus clips: a 2025 conversation with Arielle Nisenblatt about her podcast-listening habits, and a fresh chat with old bandmates Rob and Kurt about mixing immersive/Atmos audio for podcasts. The rest of the episode is Marv's usual week-in-review of the podcasting world — new gear patches, industry layoffs, newsletter drama, and a stack of recommended listens.Shows & People Mentioned• But You Can't Stay Here• WTF with Marc Maron, On with Kara Swisher, Daily Zeitgeist, The Brian Lehrer Show, Secretly Incredibly Fascinating, Today Explained, The Puzzler• Earbuds Podcast Collective newsletter — Arielle Nisenblatt• I Am Not Nicholas (Audible/BBC)• Podnews Daily — James Cridland• The Download — Sounds Profitable, Gavin Gaddis• Ken Michael's Radio Hour• Toppermost of the Poppermost (Marv, Ed, Kit)• Open Door (dementia support charity)• Podbites newsletter• Royal Swindle — Blanchard House, Becky Milligan• Stephanie Fuccio / GeoPats podcast• Comicbook Nation• Into the Podverse — Tony Doe• Belief in the Future• AI Girls Club• Jacob Reed and Me• The Good QuestLinks• themarvzone.org• newsletter.earbuds.audio
What happens when you stop calling it pre-production and just start making the record? My guest today is Vance Powell, multi-Grammy-winning producer, mixer, and engineer from Sputnik Sound in Nashville - and the most frequent guest in RSR history, now returning for his seventh appearance on the show.Vance has been with us since episode RSR002, and once again he brings an incredible combination of blunt honesty, deep musical intuition, old-school engineering discipline, and hilarious real-world stories from making records with artists like Chris Stapleton, Tyler Bryant, and a whole roster of bands who trust him to capture the moment as it happens. In this episode we dig into everything from rebuilding his machine room, to why he still aligns a U47 and Coles 4038 with a flashlight, to how tiny amps make the biggest guitar tones, to why “pre-production is production,” to mixing in Atmos in a way that actually translates to AirPods. We also talk about one-take magic on Chris Stapleton's White Horse, smashing ADR comps on the Tom Petty tribute, deep drum-room philosophy, and how Vance keeps digital rigs alive by never updating anything that's working. And of course, Vance shares what old Vance would tell young Vance - and what young Vance would tell old Vance - about belief, timing, and the moment he should've left Blackbird to build Sputnik sooner.Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.comTHANKS TO OUR SPONSORS!http://UltimateMixingMasterclass.comhttps://usa.sae.edu/ https://www.native-instruments.com Use code ROCK10 to get 10% off!https://www.spectra1964.comhttps://gracedesign.com/https://RecordingStudioRockstars.com/Academyhttps://www.thetoyboxstudio.com/Listen to the podcast theme song “Skadoosh!” https://solo.to/lijshawmusicListen to this guest's discography on Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0aFDgLgTsWaFId0n4YSX75?si=b290f2da1b47416fIf you love the podcast, then please leave a review: https://RSRockstars.com/ReviewCLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES AT: https://RSRockstars.com/569

Velera SVP Jeremiah Lotz says the company's new Atmos ecosystem aims to simplify analytics, improve member experiences and help credit union leaders make faster decisions. Also we're back to the 90's as Natasha regales Michael and Producer Zach with some of her favorite childhood parody humor.
Ever wondered what Dolby Atmos actually is and why more producers are starting to embrace immersive audio? In this episode, Xylo Aria sits down with Myles to demystify Dolby Atmos, exploring how it differs from traditional stereo, why it isn't just for major studios, and how producers can start creating immersive mixes using the tools they already have. Whether you're simply curious about spatial audio or considering adding Atmos to your workflow, this conversation breaks down the technology in a practical and approachable way.Resources

What happens when you start writing, producing, and mixing like the forest, not the trees, and you leave your worries behind? My guest today is Micah Tawlks - producer, mixer, songwriter, and artist based in Nashville, working out of his home studio in Whites Creek. Micah first joined us back on RSR324, and he's back to go even deeper into the intersection of writing, recording, and mixing. He's known for work with COIN, Hayley Williams, Louis Prince, Judah & the Lion, The Lone Bellow, Stephen Day, Ben Rector, and many more, including immersive Atmos mixes with Matt Wallace. In this episode, we dig into how writing sessions actually unfold when they happen in your studio - the unexpected ways a simple co-write can turn into full production, vocal sessions weeks later, or a finished track if the artist or publisher decides to cut it. Micah describes the different roles he shifts between: offering lyric help when invited, contributing chords and melody, arranging on the fly, or simply running a fast demo session when that's what the artist wants. We also talk about the balance between paid studio work and free co-writes, how he and his manager evaluate opportunities, and why some ideas need months to find their artist, while others get cut immediately. He explains what co-writing in pairs vs. groups actually feels like, why some writers don't want lyrical collaboration at all, and how recording the first 20 minutes of small talk often captures the best emotional ideas of the day.Micah walks us through his recent engineering day at Blackbird, choosing from huge mic lockers (multiple U47s, C12s, 67s on toms, etc.), working quickly on the console, and how “fast in a big studio” still relies on the same preparation habits as working fast at home.In the writing room, we get into why clicks can kill a session, how he builds musical rhythmic loops as “human clicks,” when he performs his own time feel into a mic so the grid follows a human instead of the other way around, and how artists respond differently to tempo when the groove feels alive. Finally, we talk mixing: keeping rough mix intent intact, charging a flat rate, when to recommend another mixer, and how honoring an artist's stylistic world guides the whole process. Micah's advice to his younger self? Be a better listener - in the room, at the console, everywhere.Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.comTHANKS TO OUR SPONSORS!http://UltimateMixingMasterclass.comhttps://usa.sae.edu/ https://www.izotope.com Use code ROCK10 to get 10% off!https://www.native-instruments.com Use code ROCK10 to get 10% off!https://www.spectra1964.comhttps://gracedesign.com/https://RecordingStudioRockstars.com/Academyhttps://www.thetoyboxstudio.com/Listen to the podcast theme song “Skadoosh!” https://solo.to/lijshawmusicListen to this guest's discography on Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2Rj5j9yzADbW3n5JEBEGB1?si=f5uo4BpbSmOHkSD9_0VgEAIf you love the podcast, then please leave a review: https://RSRockstars.com/ReviewCLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES AT: https://RSRockstars.com/567

This month, Eric Black and Dan Rayburn talk about World Cup viewership, breaking down the numbers between linear and streaming, and the problems posed by the lack of a standard measurement. They also cover World Cup latency, including on airplanes, and question if viewers would be willing to pay more for Dolby Vision HDR, Atmos surround sound and lower latency. Or, similar to customers gravitating to ad-supported subs for a lower cost, would they do the same for less interactivity? They also cover other live streams, including the Tour de France, WNBA, Wimbledon and MLB and debate how these leagues can elevate their visibility during competing top-tier events. Also discussed was the price increase for Apple TV, now priced at $199, making it unlikely to grow in the market, since less than 5% of live streams already go to Apple TV hardware. Finally, they covered the news that Fubo CEO and co-founder David Gandler is leaving the company and why the upcoming UFC Conor McGregor fight on Paramount+ might see the largest viewership on the platform, outside of NFL games.Podcast produced by Security Halt Media

On May 20, 2013, residents of Moore, a suburb of Oklahoma City, awoke to a severe weather watch. But no one was overly concerned. Tornadoes are a fact of life in the Midwest, especially in Moore, which had already survived a devastating EF5-strength twister on May 3rd, 1999, packing winds of 321 miles per hour. No one really believed it could happen again. But soon, a powerful new tornado would be heading towards Moore – and two elementary schools, Plaza Towers and Briarwood, were right in its path. For more on this story, we recommend:The Mercy of the Sky by Holly Bailey(also available as an audiobook on Audible).Audible subscribers can listen to all episodes of Against the Odds ad-free right now. This album began as a deliberate act of time travel: the idea of uncovering forgotten 90s goa material and re-producing it as if it had been waiting decades for the right moment, the right tools, and the right mindset. The result is an album that is technically old-school goa trance, yet unmistakably modern. Not retro, not nostalgic, but reimagined. The idea was simple: take the structure, logic and insanity of old-school goa trance and let it exist in a modern soundscape. Like turning found footage into a movie - the shapes are familiar, but the depth, space and weight belong to now. Acid lines breathe differently, arrangements unfold with intention, and the production carries a depth that could only exist now. This is goa trance as memory, filtered through experience. The road to The Bigger Picture has been anything but short. Years of refinement, new mixes, remixes, a new mixer, constant recalibration, all in pursuit of an optimal final sound. The "final version" kept moving forward, so I followed it until, eventually, it stopped. The Bigger Picture is not about looking back. It's about zooming out just enough to actually see what's up.

In November 1992, a Hollywood camera crew soars above Hawaii's Kīlauea, one of the world's most dangerous volcanoes, to capture footage for a major feature film. But suddenly their helicopter's engine cuts out, and they plunge into an active crater. Trapped and inhaling toxic fumes, the men will have to battle for survival — even for every breath — if they're going to escape the volcano and see their loved ones again.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
When Coast Guard pilot Steve Torpey got called into work on a Friday night back in January, 1998, he had no idea he was heading into the most challenging flight of his career. At that point, two Coast Guard helicopters had already failed to rescue the crew of the sunken fishing vessel La Conte. Torpey's crew — manning the third helicopter — were the stranded fishermen's last hope. Now retired, Steve Torpey joins host Mike Corey to share his memories of that fateful rescue mission. Ed is the grandson of footballing legend Gordon Banks. He was a national icon, the only goalkeeper ever to win the soccer World Cup for England. But Ed's heard a rumour: that in 1970, while defending the title, his granddad, his hero, was poisoned… by the CIA. All part of a Cold War plot to bolster a military dictatorship in Latin America, supposedly. Could this possibly be true? Banks did get ill in Mexico in 1970 with food poisoning. And England crashed out, marking the start of decades of hurt. Ed enlists the help of investigative journalist Gabriel Gatehouse. Together they embark on a journey into the bewildering world of Cold War espionage, a journey that threatens to unravel 60 years of sporting history; or possibly… to knock Ed's granddad off his pedestal. In today's episode we look at the 2008 TV story, The Sontaran Stratagem / The Poison Sky. Fifty-two people across the world in eleven different time zones die at the exact same time. The only connection: they all have ATMOS installed in their vehicles. Martha Jones, now a UNIT doctor, summons the Tenth Doctor back to modern-day Earth to help figure out why, but an old enemy lies in wait... Before that, we kick things off with the usual mix of news and short topics. Then, after the TV episodes chat, we open the mailbag for a ton of feedback from our listeners on a number of topics. And also stick around after the show ends, if you're so inclined, for a short discussion of the final episode/final season of THE BOYS, as well as commentary about the show over the years. They were aboard a wooden ship called the La Conte, which had seen better days. Despite a brewing storm approaching and the ship taking on water, the men decided to throw out one more fishing line. The capture of American nurses in the Philippines is often described as an “untold story” of WWII; Dr. Elizabeth Norman set out to change that. She conducted extensive interviews with 20 of the 77 nurses who were captured. Norman collected the nurses' firsthand accounts, and pored over their diaries and letters, weaving these sources together in her book, We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of the American Women Trapped on Bataan. Norman joins Cassie to delve into what it was like to care for patients while trapped in an internment camp for three years. https://www.amazon.com/We-Band-Angels-American-Trapped/dp/0812984846See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
One of the most watched films ever on Netflix is the recent Joe Carnahan directed action-thriller, The Rip. Key members of the sound team sat down with me at Formosa Hollywood to walk me down the path of the unique challenges this film presented them. From endless dog barking on set, to gun shots sounds that are huge, to a fun scene where they got to use ATMOS in a really special way. Supervising Sound Editor and Re-Recording Mixer Craig Mann is joined by Daniel Pagan (Supervising Sound Editor), Laura Wiest (Re-Recording Mixer) and Chase Keehn (Dial/ADR Supervisor) for this interesting deep dive into The Rip. ______SPONSORS: Sound Ideas had a great time at NAB this year, connecting with professionals across media, post-production, and broadcast. Due to strong interest, that sale has now been extended for a limited time. So even though NAB has wrapped, there's still a chance to take advantage of the savings - but not for long. The rations at the Los Baños P.O.W. camp are now down to just 400 calories per day. Every day, the nurses tend to patients who die from starvation. They don't know how much longer they can hold on. Unbeknownst to them, Lieutenant Colonel Henry Muller of the U.S. Army launches his plan to liberate the camp. But it's complex and dangerous, with many moving pieces. It's very likely it could fail, leading to the death of his soldiers and the prisoners of Los Baños.Audible subscribers can listen to all episodes of Against the Odds ad-free right now. What happens when you finally get to mix Spinal Tap in Dubly Atmos? You turn it up to 11, of course! My guest today is Grammy-nominated engineer and mixer Steve Genewick, joining us from his Atmos room in Los Angeles to walk us through the wild, hilarious, and surprisingly heartfelt process of capturing and mixing the new "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues" soundtrack and album. In this episode, Steve talks about working directly with Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer; recording their live vocals; tracking the band as a real rock group; and assembling a full dubly Atmos experience that honors the original film while pushing the new one into immersive territory. We dig into the whole workflow - from the Beyerdynamic M500 ribbon mics he labeled as Nigel, David, and Derek… to tracking full songs live at The Village… to mixing the concert sequences for the film… to remixing "Break Like the Wind" in Atmos using the original 1990s analog tapes that had to be transferred from tape box track sheets. Steve also talks about Spinal Tap's actual backstory, the improvised nature of the films, working directly with Rob Reiner, and why the guys are not in character in the studio - except when it's time to sound "more Nigel."We also go deep into Atmos and orchestral recording, Steve's work on classic jazz records (Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard), his remixing of the "Jaws" and "Jaws 2" soundtracks, and how immersive music translates between speakers, earbuds, and soundbars. Steve explains LFE strategy, subwoofer layouts, mixing bass into objects, and why a great Atmos mix is not about flying things around the room — it's about clarity, space, and emotional impact. And yes, we do talk about Stonehenge… the pizza pedal… the cheese guitar… and whether mixing break like the wind is allowed in the control room.Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.comTHANKS TO OUR SPONSORS!http://UltimateMixingMasterclass.comhttps://usa.sae.edu/ The next program starts May 11, 2026 https://www.izotope.com Use code ROCK10 to get 10% off!https://www.native-instruments.com Use code ROCK30 to get 1 month free of NI 360!https://www.spectra1964.comhttps://gracedesign.com/https://pickrmusic.com https://RecordingStudioRockstars.com/Academyhttps://www.thetoyboxstudio.com/Listen to the podcast theme song “Skadoosh!” https://solo.to/lijshawmusicListen to this guest's discography on Apple Music:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/steve-genewick-atmos-mixes/pl.u-76oNkrMF1JKbpIf you love the podcast, then please leave a review: https://RSRockstars.com/ReviewCLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES AT: https://RSRockstars.com/556

Prisoners are resorting to desperate acts to survive as they're pushed to the physical and psychological brink. The nurses are also malnourished and struggling to care for their fellow prisoners. But the tide of the war has finally turned and an ambitious U.S. Army paratrooper named Henry Muller is developing a plan to liberate the camp. But first Muller has to get buy-in from his superiors for his risky plan. And if he doesn't act fast, it may be too late to save anyone.
