On this week's show we look at a technology that could end HDMI. We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: Sony steps away from 8K TVs – for now Survey: Share of Homes With TV Antennas Falls to 19% DIRECTV unites streaming options under one name and price structure Peacock highlights cool features for mobile users Other: AUBESS Tuya WiFi 16A Mini Smart Switch Is GPMI the beginning of the end of HDMI?  Over 50 Chinese companies including Hisense and TCL have joined forces to back an HDMI alternative called GPMI (General Purpose Media Interface). This new wired communication standard is designed to integrate multiple functionalities into a single cable, aiming to rival HDMI, DisplayPort, and Thunderbolt. The following are some key features: High Bandwidth for Data Transmission - GPMI Type-B: Supports up to 192 Gbps bandwidth, significantly surpassing HDMI 2.1 (48 Gbps), HDMI 2.2 (96 Gbps), DisplayPort 2.1 (80 Gbps), and Thunderbolt 4 (40 Gbps). GPMI Type-C: Offers up to 96 Gbps, compatible with USB-C ports, doubling the 40 Gbps limit of USB4 with Extended Power Range (EPR) under USB PD 3.1. Enables ultra-high-definition video - including 8K at 120Hz or higher, suitable for next-generation displays, gaming, and professional applications. Power Delivery GPMI Type-B: Delivers up to 480W of power, far exceeding Thunderbolt 4 (100W) and USB4 (240W with EPR). GPMI Type-C: Provides up to 240W, matching USB4 EPR capabilities. This eliminates the need for separate power cables -  simplifying setups for devices like TVs, monitors, and gaming laptops. All-in-One Cable Solution - Combines video, audio, data transfer, network connectivity, and power delivery into a single cable, reducing cable clutter. Supports bidirectional data transfer - allowing devices to send and receive data simultaneously. Compatibility and Connectivity - GPMI Type-C: Licensed by the USB Implementers Forum ensuring compatibility with existing USB-C ecosystems for smartphones, PCs, and TVs. GPMI Type-B: Uses a proprietary connector, which may face adoption challenges unless widely licensed. Backward-compatible with USB-C and DisplayPort standards - easing transitions without requiring immediate hardware replacements. Universal Control and Device Management - Supports a universal control standard similar to HDMI-CEC, allowing a single remote to control multiple GPMI-connected devices  Security Features - Integrates the ADCP (Advanced Digital Content Protection) protocol for secure content transmission. Supports daisy-chaining -  similar to DisplayPort, for connecting multiple devices in series. Limitations and Notes While GPMI supports 8K video, HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.1 can handle higher resolutions (10K and 16K, respectively), though without power delivery. Adoption is currently limited to Chinese companies (e.g., Huawei, Hisense, TCL), and global traction depends on integration into mainstream devices and compatibility with non-Chinese brands like Sony, Intel, or NVIDIA. The proprietary Type-B connector may face adoption hurdles compared to the USB-C-based Type-C variant. Commercialization is planned for Q1 2025, with consumer products expected by early 2026. GPMI's combination of high bandwidth, power delivery, and multifunctionality positions it as a potential game-changer, particularly for 8K content and simplified connectivity, though its success hinges on widespread adoption and global market acceptance.

Michael Soileau and Scott Prather of LFT Fiber: Bringing Community-Owned Connectivity to Lafayette and Beyond This episode of Discover Lafayette features Michael Soileau, Director of LFT Fiber (formerly LUS Fiber), and Scott Prather, Public Relations Manager for the community-owned fiber utility. Together, they share the powerful story of how Lafayette's local investment in fiber optics two decades ago has blossomed into a cutting-edge broadband network that now reaches into rural and underserved communities across South Louisiana. It also underscored Lafayette's long-standing commitment to serving as a leader in our region, state, and nation in providing top-notch services to our citizens. A Full-Circle Moment Michael Soileau, a Mamou native, reflects on how the expansion of LFT Fiber into Evangeline Parish—one of Louisiana's most underserved and impoverished regions—feels personal. Thanks to strategic federal grants secured with the help of former Lafayette Mayor-President Monique Boulet during her time with Acadiana Planning Commission, LFT Fiber is fulfilling its mission to bridge the digital divide in rural communities. Celebrating 20 Years of Fiber Innovation Lafayette was one of the first cities in the country to build its own fiber optic network. What started as a utility communication system quickly evolved into a public broadband network. On June 16, LFT Fiber celebrates the 20th anniversary of the citizens' vote to support this bold initiative. Expanding Across Acadiana Through federal funding programs such as the GUMBO grant, LFT Fiber has expanded into seven parishes: Evangeline, Iberia, Vermilion, St. Landry, Eunice, Jennings, and Acadia, focusing on homes that previously lacked access to true broadband. While they don't yet serve 100% of these areas, the goal remains to connect as many people as possible. Workforce and Community Investment LFT Fiber employs 94 local professionals and partners with Lafayette-based contractors for construction and installation. Community pride runs deep, and their mission extends beyond internet access—they support local nonprofits, events like Festival International, and schools through digital access and sponsorships. Connection Essentials: Making Internet Affordable Recognizing that not every household can afford premium internet, LFT Fiber recently launched Connection Essentials, a $25/month plan offering 60 Mbps service to families receiving federal assistance with a student in the home. The plan includes a modem and is currently being rolled out in Evangeline Parish, with expansion underway in Lafayette and beyond. The "Connection Essentials" plan provides internet speeds 60 Mbps download and 60 Mbps upload for $25 per month, with unlimited data usage and no overage fees. Customer premise equipment is included at no additional cost. A one-time installation fee of $49 will be charged at the time of service activation. Everyday Pricing ("EDP") has also been introduced at affordable rates offered at 1 GBPS for $85.00 per month or 500 MBPS for $65.00 per month. "A commitment to fair, consistent pricing with no gimmicks, no surprises, and no limited-time promotions that leave you guessing." Digital Literacy and Safety Providing access is only part of the mission. LFT Fiber is actively partnering with school districts, library systems, and nonprofits to improve digital literacy, helping families understand how to safely and effectively use the internet for telemedicine, education, job searching, and more. Collaboration as a Core Value The recent Connectivity Summit, hosted by LFT Fiber on April 2, 2025, brought together business, nonprofit, healthcare, and education leaders to discuss shared challenges and foster partnerships. These summits help generate the kind of serendipitous, five-minute conversations that spark long-term innovation and community growth. On the Connectivity Summit, Michael Soileau shared,

During this series of informative podcasts, we'll bring you foundational training on the most popular Oracle technologies. Let's get started! 00:25 Nikita: Welcome to the Oracle University Podcast! I'm Nikita Abraham, Team Lead: Editorial Services with Oracle University, and with me is Lois Houston, Director of Innovation Programs. Lois: Hey there! Last week, we spoke about multicloud, discussing what it is, and the new partnerships we have with Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and Amazon Web Services. If you haven't gotten to the episode yet, we suggest you go back and listen to it before you dive into this one.  00:56 Nikita: Joining us again is Samvit Mishra, Senior Manager of CSS OU Cloud Delivery, and we're going to ask him about Oracle Interconnect for Azure. We'll look at the scenarios around Oracle Interconnect for Azure and talk about some considerations too. Hi  Samvit! Thanks for being with us today. Samvit: Hi Niki! Hi Lois!  Lois: Samvit, you introduced Oracle Interconnect for Azure last week, but tell us, how does it improve the customer experience? What benefits does it offer? 01:25 Samvit: Oracle Interconnect for Azure can be established with a one-time setup, eliminating the need for an intermediary network provider. This cross-cloud direct connection also helps you migrate to the cloud or build cloud-native applications by using the best of OCI and Microsoft Azure.  Now, because it is a private connection between Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Microsoft Azure, you get consistent network performance… around 2 millisecond latency. The interconnect also enables joint customers to take advantage of a unified Identity and Access Management platform. So, you can set up single sign-on between Microsoft Azure and OCI for your Oracle applications, like PeopleSoft and e-Business Suite.  02:16 Nikita: That makes the integration pretty seamless, right? Samvit: Exactly, Niki. Having a federated single sign-on means you authenticate only once to access multiple applications, without signing in separately to access each application. And you also get a secure inter-cloud connection that bypasses the public internet.  02:38 Nikita: How extensive is the global reach of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Azure in terms of the number of cloud regions available? Samvit: OCI has the fastest growing network of global data centers, with 50 cloud regions available. And there are 12 Azure interconnect regions. For example, Ashburn in the US is an OCI-Azure interconnect region.  03:01 Lois: Samvit, what is the architecture of Oracle Interconnect for Azure like? How is data transferred securely between a Virtual Cloud Network in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and a Virtual Network in Microsoft Azure? Samvit: A Virtual Network in a Microsoft Azure region is connected to a Virtual Cloud Network in an OCI region using a private interconnection composed of Azure ExpressRoute and OCI FastConnect. Now, on the OCI side, the FastConnect virtual circuit terminates at a dynamic routing gateway, which is attached to the Virtual Cloud Network. On the Microsoft Azure side, the ExpressRoute connection ends at a virtual network gateway, which is attached to a virtual network. So, traffic from Azure to OCI is routed through the virtual network gateway in Microsoft Azure to the dynamic routing gateway in OCI.  What's important to note is that in both directions, the traffic never leaves the private network.  04:05 Nikita: Wow, ok. Samvit, what are some common use cases of Oracle Interconnect for Azure? Can you give us an example of a supported deployment option? Samvit: We can have a .NET application running in Azure that can access an Oracle database in OCI. Similarly, you can also have custom cloud-native applications running on Azure using Oracle Autonomous Database on the OCI side.  04:29 Lois: And are there any prerequisites when you configure Oracle Interconnect for Azure? Samvit: Yes, there are. Remember, on the Azure side, you must have a virtual network with subnets and a virtual network gateway and on the OCI side, you must have a VCN with subnets and an attached dynamic routing gateway.  04:50 Lois: Let's talk about the networking components that are involved in each site of the connection. Can you run us through the comparison? Samvit: Now, if we talk about the virtual network component, on the OCI side, there is a Virtual Cloud Network and on the Azure side, there is a Virtual Network. From a virtual circuit standpoint, in OCI, there is the FastConnect virtual circuit… on the Azure side, there is the ExpressRoute circuit. When it comes to the gateway, on the OCI side, there is the dynamic routing gateway and on the Azure side, there is the virtual network gateway.  Similarly, for routing, there are route tables in OCI and Microsoft Azure. From a security standpoint, in OCI, you can configure security lists as well as network security groups and on the Azure side, you have network security groups.  05:44 Nikita: What are the benefits of this partnership?  Samvit: This partnership allows you to innovate using the best combination of Oracle's and Microsoft's cloud services based on their features, performance, and pricing. So, in a way, you can combine the capabilities of both cloud vendors.  06:01 Nikita: So, a one-stop shop. Samvit: Exactly, Niki. This partnership also gives you a highly optimized, secure, and unified cross-cloud experience so you can use the best of services from Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Microsoft Azure. And the best part is you continue to leverage any existing investment in Oracle and Microsoft technologies.  06:24 Lois: I wanted to ask you about the typical scenarios where Oracle Interconnect for Azure is supported. Samvit: There are many scenarios where this Interconnect is supported. Let me run you through a couple of them. You could connect an OCI Virtual Cloud Network to an Azure Virtual Network. That's a scenario that is supported.  You could connect peered OCI VCNs in the same region to Azure. You could connect peered OCI VCNs in different regions to Azure. You could also connect services in Oracle Services Network to Azure. 06:59 Lois: And are there any scenarios where this interconnect is not supported? Samvit: When the scenario involves connecting an on-premises environment to Azure via OCI VCN and vice versa, that is not supported.  07:16 Unlock the power of AI Vector Search with our new course and certification. Get more accurate search results, handle complex datasets easily, and supercharge your data-driven decisions. From now through May 15, 2025, we are waiving the certification exam fee (valued at $245). Visit mylearn.oracle.com to enroll. 07:42 Nikita: Welcome back! I want to explore these scenarios in a little more detail, Samvit.  Samvit: OK. Imagine you have OCI on one side and Azure on the other. In this scenario, we have a dynamic routing gateway in OCI and a virtual network gateway in Azure. This is a basic configuration. With Oracle FastConnect and Azure ExpressRoute, customers can create a private interconnection between their OCI and Azure environments. Now in another scenario, we have VCNs in OCI, and they're peered together using a dynamic routing gateway. With this local peering, the peered VCN can talk to Azure through Oracle Interconnect for Azure.  Here's another scenario. We have VCNs in different OCI regions: one VCN in OCI Region 1 and another in OCI Region 2, with Azure sitting alongside. They have established a remote peering connection, and each VCN has its own dynamic routing gateway. Here's the kicker—the peered VCN in this architecture can also converse with Azure using the interconnect.  Now think about this scenario. We have the dynamic routing gateway, but we have also added a service gateway to the VCN in OCI. This service gateway allows your VCN to privately access specific Oracle services without exposing data to the public internet. No internet gateway or NAT gateway is required to reach those specific services. Now, traffic from the VCN to the Oracle Services Network travels over the Oracle network fabric and never traverses the internet. Using Oracle Interconnect for Azure, resources in Azure can also privately access resources in Oracle Services Network.  09:38 Nikita: What are the bandwidth and cost considerations? Samvit: Pricing is based solely on the port capabilities of OCI FastConnect and your ExpressRoute. One thing you need to understand is that the cost of FastConnect is the same across all OCI regions. And there are no separate ingress or egress data charges. The cost of Azure ExpressRoute varies across regions and Oracle recommends that you use the local setting, which has no separate ingress or egress charges. Azure ExpressRoute supports up to 10 GB as bandwidth. FastConnect is available in 1, 2, 5, or 10 Gbps. So, the recommendation here is to choose one of these matching bandwidth options under ExpressRoute.  10:27 Lois: Thank you, Samvit, for taking the time to talk to us about Oracle Interconnect for Azure. Samvit: Thank you for having me. Nikita: Remember, Oracle also offers an interconnect solution with Google Cloud, which is very similar to the one with Azure. It too provides a direct, high-performance, and secure network connection with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. So, if you want to learn more about it, head over to mylearn.oracle.com and search for the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Multicloud Architect Professional course.  Lois: In our next episode, we'll take a close look at Oracle Database@Azure service. Until then, this is Lois Houston… Nikita: And Nikita Abraham, signing off! 11:07 That's all for this episode of the Oracle University Podcast. This Day in Legal History: Lincoln Signs Legal Tender ActOn February 25, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Legal Tender Act into law, allowing the U.S. government to issue paper money not backed by gold or silver. These new notes, called "greenbacks" due to their color, became the first widely circulated fiat currency in American history. The Civil War had placed enormous financial strain on the Union, and the government needed a way to fund its war effort without relying solely on borrowing or taxation. By making greenbacks legal tender for all debts except customs duties, the law ensured their widespread use. However, the move was controversial, as some feared it would cause inflation and undermine public confidence in the currency. Despite this, the greenbacks helped stabilize the wartime economy and ensured that soldiers and suppliers were paid. After the war, legal battles arose over whether the government could require creditors to accept paper money instead of gold or silver. The Supreme Court initially ruled against the policy in Hepburn v. Griswold (1870) but reversed its decision in The Legal Tender Cases (1871), upholding the government's power to issue fiat currency. The Legal Tender Act set a precedent for the federal government's control over the monetary system, paving the way for modern U.S. currency.A federal judge has temporarily blocked Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DGE) from accessing sensitive data held by the U.S. Education Department and the Office of Personnel Management. The ruling, issued by Judge Deborah Boardman in Maryland, came in response to a lawsuit from labor unions arguing that granting DGE access to personal records violated the Privacy Act of 1974. The data in question includes Social Security numbers, addresses, income details, and citizenship status of federal employees and student aid recipients. The Trump administration contended that restricting DGE's access would hinder its government downsizing efforts, but the judge determined that the agency had no legitimate need for such information. The White House has not commented on the decision. Since Trump's return to office, DGE, led by Musk, has pursued aggressive cost-cutting measures, including mass layoffs. The ruling follows another court decision in New York that blocked DGE from accessing Treasury Department systems, amid multiple lawsuits challenging its authority.US judge blocks Musk's DOGE team from accessing Education Department, OPM data | ReutersPresident Donald Trump is set to appoint Kash Patel, the newly confirmed FBI director, as the acting head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), according to a source. Patel, a staunch Trump ally, will oversee both agencies simultaneously, a move that has sparked concerns among Democrats and moderate Republicans who previously opposed his FBI nomination due to his history of targeting Trump's critics. Patel has strong backing from pro-gun groups and is expected to shift the ATF's focus away from firearm regulation. The decision aligns with Trump's campaign rhetoric criticizing the ATF for being overly aggressive toward gun owners. Attorney General Pam Bondi recently fired the agency's top legal counsel, Pamela Hicks, claiming ATF officials had unfairly targeted gun owners. Bondi has also redirected the ATF's priorities toward immigration enforcement. Patel's dual appointment is part of a broader Trump administration strategy, with multiple officials holding multiple roles, including Marco Rubio at the State Department and Russ Vought at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.Trump to name FBI chief Patel as acting ATF director, source says | ReutersFrom a great piece written by Karl Bode for Techdirt, the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) is funding affordable, community-owned broadband networks in underserved areas, challenging monopoly control by major telecom companies. In New York, Oswego County received a $26 million grant to build an open-access fiber network, allowing multiple internet providers to compete over shared infrastructure. The network's primary provider, Empire Access, is offering 500 Mbps service for $50 a month and 1 Gbps for $65, significantly undercutting industry giants like Charter and Verizon.Similarly, Minnesota's Carver County has used ARPA funds to build dark fiber infrastructure, leasing it to MetroNet in a public-private partnership. MetroNet now provides residents with gigabit fiber for $50 and 5 Gbps for $110, far cheaper than traditional providers. This strategy contrasts with other states that continue to funnel broadband subsidies to large telecoms with a history of neglecting rural and low-income areas. Some states—Vermont, Maine, California, and New York—are using federal funds to expand community-owned broadband, treating internet access as an essential utility. However, with an additional $42.5 billion in broadband grants from the 2021 infrastructure bill set to be distributed, the Trump administration and the Department of Government Efficiency (DGE) will likely attempt to redirect these funds toward corporate-backed projects instead of community-driven initiatives.ARPA Is Quietly Funding Cheap ($50-$65 A Month) Community-Owned Gigabit Fiber Access To Long Neglected Neighborhoods | Techdirt This is a public episode. This week on EYE ON NPI we're eatin' our Wheaties (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvyInWTLM8s) - it's the Analog Devices MAX96714 Single GMSL2/GMSL1 to CSI-2 Deserializer (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/base-product/analog-devices-inc-maxim-integrated/175/MAX96714/737256) a way to send high resolution digital video over a co-ax wire without losing quality. These advanced serial-deserial sets - we'll call them SerDes for short - let you minimize cabling, for reduced weight and complexity when passing high speed video from cameras or to displays over single flexible RG coax. It's easier than ever these days to add high quality video or camera sensing to your products: boards like the Raspberry Pi can do dual 4K HDMI and up to two DSI / CSI ports on the Compute Modules (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/single-board-computers-sbcs/933?s=N4IgTCBcDaIMYHsC2AHArgFwKYAIkIBM0AbLEAXQF8g) but the cables that they come with tend to be short, maxing out at 500mm long. (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/raspberry-pi/SC1130/21658263) That's because the MIPI protocol used for data transfer is designed for ultra high speeds over low cost flex PCBs, from say a laptop motherboard to the laptop monitor or webcam. Now, we do sell looooong cables (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2144) that are 2 meters long but with the caveat that they are well outside the expected spec. They do work! But we wouldn't put it in a product that goes to customers. So what do you do if you have a car, where the seats and dashboard have monitors but the main processor is probably in the back of the car, far from the hot engine? That's where Analog Devices got inspired from the Cable TV of our youth (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_television) that would let kids of the 90's watch dozens of channels using...only one cable! The cable, in this case, is a coaxial cable: one copper wire surrounded by a plastic dielectric, then a braided metal ground return. Coax cables are flexible but rugged, and DigiKey stocks thousands of different types (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/coaxial-cables-rf/475) by the foot or reel. So they make an excellent physical transport layer for video in aggressive environments because they are shielded yet flexible. With GMSL you need two chips: a serializer like the MAX96717 (https://www.digikey.com/short/3pcv09pn) and a de-serializer like the MAX96714 (https://www.digikey.com/short/3jqw8tj8). Between the two, connect said coax, then configure both sides for the data format you want and boom, you have a transparent video link! The serializer will take the digital data, then turn it into a serialized-packetized-data-packet on a single wire. That thin wire can fit into spaces that would normally be a challenge such as cars / aerospace where weight is at a premium, robotics where the shielding will protect the signal integrity, and medical where high rez cameras have to fit in tiny spaces. GMSL even supports 'power over coax' where a DC signal can be used as a carrier for the high frequency data - so you really can have one thin cable for everything. Depending on which generation of GMSL you choose, you will get either 3 Gbps or 6. A small portion of that is 'upstream' communication, thats used for IRQs, video/camera control and extra I2C or GPIO. If you need stereo or quad camera/video , you can use a quad deserializer: you will still get 4 coax cables in but it'll be smaller and perhaps better synchronized than having four separate deserializers. To get started, we recommend picking up the MAX96714-BAK-EVK eval board (https://www.digikey.com/short/nh82vrbc), which is not inexpensive but does have everything you need to get started with the MAX96714 (https://www.digikey.com/short/3jqw8tj8). Note you'll also need the serializer! One thing that's nice is that if you want to get set up with a Raspberry Pi to start, you can order the Pi Cam Eval board (https://wiki.analog.com/resources/eval/user-guides/ad-gmslcamrpi-adp) which is an adapter for the eval to use off-the-shelf Pi camera modules, pick up at DigiKey (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc/AD-GMSLCAMRPI-ADP/21678785). Then to set up the configuration you can use the Linux driver to have automatic setup (https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/drivers/media/i2c/max96714.c) without a separate configuration program. If you'd like to try out GSML for your next long-distance video product, you can pick up the Analog Devices MAX96714 Single GMSL2/GMSL1 to CSI-2 Deserializer (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/base-product/analog-devices-inc-maxim-integrated/175/MAX96714/737256) today from DigiKey because it's in stock for immediate shipment! Book now and you can be zipping along MIPI CSI data at 6Gbps by tomorrow afternoon.
