Welcome to the tenth and final episode of season 6. This week's episode is the second of two live recordings I did back to back at Kings Place in London – which was recorded in front of an audience. My guest is Abigail Bergstrom, the literary agent behind some of the biggest bestselling books in the past few years. More recently, at the beginning of this year, Abigail published her own debut novel, titled What A Shame. It is a beautifully-written story which explores everything from heartbreak and healing to the occult. I can testify to loving Abigail's book so much I read the whole thing in one sitting, over the course of an evening. During our conversation, we discussed among other things the importance of turning up as your ‘best self' for alonement (i.e not completely hungover or tired – because you wouldn't turn up like that for a date!); the role that alone time plays in emotional healing; plus, why despite being a lover of solitude Abigail will never be taking herself off to a cabin in the woods – and feels a little bit miffed when her boyfriend goes for solo breaks in a log cabin. I hope you enjoy listening. You can order Abigail Bergstrom's book, What a Shame, now from Amazon and Waterstones. You can also order my book, Alonement: How To Be Alone and Absolutely Own It, which is based on this very podcast, now from Amazon and Waterstones. Abigail Bergstrom is a Welsh writer, editor and agent, who has worked in publishing for over a decade. She is an industry leader and an expert and has edited some of Britain's most prominent feminist voices, she was nominated for Literary Agent of the Year 2020 and has helped build some of today's biggest book brands. But today, we are here to talk about her debut novel What A Shame! A brilliantly fresh novel with blistering humour reminiscent of Emma Jane Unsworth and the raw vulnerability of I May Destroy You. It is a book about female shame, friendship, grief, about trying to heal yourself, about trying unorthodox remedies to go deeper into yourself and explores both the beauty and the pain of figuring hard things out. We talk about burnout, the downsides of pushing yourself to the limit, writing a novel in secret, how to deconstruct your working life and how to reshape it. I loved this conversation and it was a treat getting to chat to Abbie :)Abbie's book What A Shame: https://uk.bookshop.org/a/153/9781529367065Check out this survey from The Post Office, a current sponsor of Ctrl Alt Delete!https://survey.euro.confirmit.com/wix/5/p299364423555.aspx See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Adults meets little scratch in this bold, funny and tender debut, which captures the pain of heartbreak and the universal heat of female shame through a very unique journey towards self-acceptance. The idea of a curse was divisive, but the assertion that I had, for some time now, been 'laden with something dark' was disconcertingly unanimous. I wondered if this was something you also saw in me, if that was why you left. There is something wrong with Mathilda. She's still reeling from the blow of a gut-punch breakup and grieving the death of a loved one. But that's not it. She's cried all her tears, mastered her crow pose and thrown out every last reminder of him. But that's not helping. Concerned that she isn't moving on, Mathilda's friends push her towards a series of increasingly unorthodox remedies. Until the seams of herself begin to come undone. Tender, unflinching and blisteringly funny, What a Shame glitters with rage and heartbreak, an offers up the joy of self-acceptance through an extraordinary rite of passage to overcome the prickly heat of female shame.
