In recognition of International Purple Day today, Catherine Hodder, Head of Policy, Influencing & Youth Voice at Young Epilepsy joins Dale to discuss 'Understanding epilepsy's impact on children and young people'. Epilepsy affects around 1 in 200 children in the UK, yet 1 in 3 children with epilepsy do not get the support they need to fully participate in school life. Epilepsy is one of the most common conditions affecting children and young people, yet it is often misunderstood. Seizures can be subtle and are frequently missed or mistaken for inattention, many school staff do not feel confident responding when a seizure occurs, and as a result some children are unnecessarily excluded from lessons, sports and school trips. Catherine explains: What epilepsy is and how seizures can look very different. Common myths and misunderstandings. Practical, school-focused advice: Individual Health Care Plans, emergency medication, and how to respond when a seizure happens. The impact of epilepsy on learning, memory and mental health. How schools can improve inclusion so young people don't miss out. A reminder about the DfE consultation on updated guidance for supporting pupils with medical conditions (open until 1 May). This episode gives clear, practical guidance that helps staff feel confident supporting pupils with epilepsy - from first aid basics to building a supportive, inclusive school culture. It's full of resources and actions schools can take straight away. On 23rd September, we are delighted to welcome historian and broadcaster Tracy Borman back to Alnwick Castle to speak about her latest book The Stolen Crown: Treachery, Deceit and the Death of the Tudor Dynasty. And to give you a taste of what to expect if you buy a ticket to the event, we spoke with Tracy here on the podcast to find out all about the book.Inspired by new discoveries made at the British Library, Tracy tells us about the succession crisis in the reign of Elizabeth I, and how the transition from the Tudors to the Stuart was not as straightforward as previously thought. You will hear the reasons why Elizabeth refused to name a successor during her long reign, how ordinary English people felt about the King of Scotland coming to the throne, and the key role that the Earls of Northumberland here at Alnwick Castle played. At the start of the Tudor period, the 5th Earl escorted Margaret Tudor to Scotland to marry James IV; and at the end, the 9th Earl kept up a secret correspondence with James VI in the years leading up to Elizabeth's death. He may have also had a claim to the throne of his own...And of course, Tracy also tells us what to expect when she visits Alnwick Castle in person on 23rd September! Tickets are available now at alnwickcastle.com or on our page on Eventbrite. The Stolen Crown is available from all good bookshops from 4th September, published by Hodder - or you can purchase your copy at our event on the 23rd!

The Author Events Series presents Paul Muldoon  | Joy in Service on Rue Tagore: Poems  REGISTER In Conversation with Daisy Fried  Since his 1973 debut, New Weather, Paul Muldoon has created some of the most original and memorable poetry of the past half century. Joy in Service on Rue Tagore sees him writing with the same verve and distinction that have consistently won him the highest accolades. Here, from artichokes to zinc, Muldoon navigates an alphabet of image and history, through barleymen and Irish slavers to the last running wolf in Ulster. The search involves the accumulated bric-a-brac of a life, and a reckoning along the way of gains against loss. In the poet's skillful hands, ancient maps are unfurled and brought into focus--the aggregation of Imperial Rome and the dismantling of Standard Oil, the pogroms of a Ukrainian ravine and of a Belfast shipyard. Through modern medicine and warfare, disaster and repair, these poems are electric in their energy, while profoundly humane in their line of inquiry. Paul Muldoon was born in County Armagh in 1951. He now lives in New York. A former radio and television producer for the BBC in Belfast, he has taught at Princeton University for thirty-five years. He is the author of fourteen previous collections of poetry, including Moy Sand and Gravel, for which he won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize. Daisy Fried is the author of five books of poetry: My Destination (forthcoming next year from Flood Editions and Carcanet Press), The Year the City Emptied, Women's Poetry: Poems and Advice, My Brother is Getting Arrested Again, a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle, and She Didn't Mean to Do It. She has been awarded Guggenheim, Hodder and Pew Fellowships. A core faculty member in the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College, and an occasional poetry critic for the New York Times, Poetry Foundation and elsewhere, she has lived in Philadelphia for decades, but will be moving to San Francisco at the end of the summer.  The 2024/25 Author Events Series is presented by Comcast. NHS consultant neurologist Dr Suzanne O'Sullivan argues that a range of medical conditions from autism to ADHD are now overdiagnosed, which is completely redefining how we think about sickness and disease. In a new book The Age of Diagnosis; Sickness, Health and Why Medicine Has Gone Too Far, she explains why she believes that creating large numbers of new diagnoses, carries risks for both our mental and physical wellbeing and can turn healthy people into patients. Suzanne is convinced that we should be cautious about having unnecessary medical tests and investigations that may cause more harm than good. And she reveals, perhaps surprisingly, that apart from a small benefit for large bowel cancer, cancer screening has not been shown to have an impact on all cause mortality. Suggesting that although we may be finding cancer earlier, we are not necessarily saving lives. The Age of Diagnosis; Sickness, Health and Why Medicine Has Gone Too Far by Suzanne O'Sullivan is published by Hodder. Quicksilver by Callie Hart was the quiet BookTok hit of 2024. Initially released by the author via independent publisher, it was won, in a 10-way bid by Hodder & Stoughton for their Fantasy imprint, Hodderscape, and was released on the 3rd December 2024. As with all fantasy novels, there are as many detractors as there are those praising it. So what did I think of this latest addition to the romantasy and fantasy world? Did it light my mental fire, or did it extinguish as quickly as a match on a windy day? The story of Kingfisher and Saeris (pronounced Sare-iss) is a bit of a mixed bag, but at over 600 pages, it was a journey to get from the beginning to the end.
