With the US now directly engaged in the Israel-Iran conflict, Jon is joined by Maziar Bahari, publisher of iranwire.com and author of “Then They Came for Me,” a memoir that served as the basis for Jon's 2014 film “Rosewater.” Together, they explore the reality of life under Iran's current government, discuss the complex challenges of regime change both in Iran and elsewhere, and consider what ordinary Iranians actually want: peace and the freedom to live their lives. Bean and Dan are joined once more by one of the good friends of Chronscast, Tade Thompson, to discuss the great David Lynch's towering masterpiece, Mulholland Drive. Lynch is one of our favourite filmmakers, and his films continue to astound and bewilder like no other director's can. We wanted to do an episode to give our own small tribute to the great man, so you can imagine our delight when our old pal Tade told us of his own love for Lynch. We decided to talk about Mulholand Drive, as it is probably his greatest work, arguably his most successful and influential, and often cited as one of the greatest films of the 21st century. At once a poison-pen-cum-love-letter to Hollywood, the film reflects Lynch's own highly complicated relationship with the moviemaking machine in Los Angeles. It follows the story of Betty, whose own nightmarish descent through the Dante-like hellish circles of Hollywood, encompassing ambition, fame, envy, murder, corruption, glamour, sex, and betrayal is portrayed in an ever-expanding web of intrigue, (self)-deceit and guilt. The film mixes noir thriller with surreal horror, and finds time for some incredible set pieces, including one of the greatest sleights-of-hand in cinema during the scene at Club Silencio. We will be discussing spoilers as usual, but with a film like Mulholland Drive, spoilers arguably don't matter. What matters is that you go and watch it.Tade Thompson is the author of several modern science fiction hits, including the award-winning Rosewater trilogy, Far From The Light Of Heaven, and other works such as The Murders of Molly Southbourne, and Jackdaw, which itself is a nightmarish descent into madness worthy of Lynch himself.Join us in the next episode when Tade will continue to chat with us about the perils of AI technology in the writing and publishing industry, as well as his current screenwriting work.

I am joined by Mark Benis, who has composed the musical soundtrack for the point and click adventure game Rosewater, set in the wild west and released in 2024. Mark has also worked on the soundtrack for Lamplight City with others credits for titles including Wolfenstein: Youngblood. In this podcast, we discuss his joy of retro chip-tune music of retro gaming platforms including the Nintendo Game Boy, which has inspired his journey creativity to now write musical soundtracks for modern gaming titles. Topics include: Mark Benis’ opportunity to become a game composer Childhood love of Pokémon Red/Blue music led to a lifelong curiosity about chip music The beauty of 8-bit music to orchestral and back again Using Wwyse and FMOD as audio middleware to replace line-by-line coding Mark’s early days and the audio equipment he used The financial barrier of the many professional audio sample libraries No woodwinds in the game Lamplight City inspiring creativity by limitation How hardware MIDI modules (Roland MT-32, Sound Canvas etc) have been replaced with software music audio libraries Mark’s go to piano performances to loosen his fingers and inspire his thoughts Mark’s computer and desk setup for music composition What is Rosewater and the musical brief you were given Avoiding the typical wild west country style music How much of the original work made it into the game soundtrack? We'd love to hear from you, send us a text about your favorite show!Love is in the air—or at least, all over the aisles of every store right now. Roses are everywhere, spilling out of grocery displays and flower shop windows, just waiting to be gifted as a symbol of love. But there's a reason roses have held this status for centuries. They carry a high-vibrational energy that has been used in spiritual and healing traditions all over the world.Beyond their beauty and heavenly scent, roses remind us to soften, to open, and to receive love in all its forms. For thousands of years, their essence has been woven into sacred ceremonies, healing rituals, and everyday magic to help connect us to something bigger than ourselves. In this episode, we're getting into rosewater—one of the most powerful (and easiest!) ways to work with this high-vibe flower. We'll talk about how different cultures have used rosewater for centuries, how it can clear and uplift energy, and why it's an incredible tool for heart healing and deepening your spiritual practice. And if you've ever wanted to make your own rosewater—whether for a heartfelt gift or to infuse it with your own personal healing intentions—we'll point you in the right direction and share a couple of tips and ideas to help get the most out of yours.About Christina Wooten, Sedona Medium:Want to take more aligned action in your life? And Stewart ended the rally with a speech slamming the media for stoking the country's divisions.“But we live now in hard times, not end times,” he said. “And we can have animus and not be enemies. But unfortunately, one of our main tools in delineating the two broke.” That rally has a Rosetta Stone quality to it now. Because what Stewart was describing has only gotten worse. Our divisions feel deeper and more dangerous. So as we enter election week, I wanted to have a conversation with Stewart about some of the arcs he has traced in American politics since he first hosted “The Daily Show” in 1999. We discuss how the media has become increasingly segmented and polarized in the past 25 years, how that has affected politics, how he understands Tucker Carlson's political transformation and whether his own politics have changed.Note: The Washington Post is one of several news organizations mentioned in this conversation. We taped this interview before the recent controversy at the Washington Post over ending its practice of presidential endorsements -- a decision made by the paper's owner, Jeff Bezos. This episode contains strong language.Book Recommendations:I Shouldn't Be Telling You This (But I'm Going to Anyway) by Chelsea DevantezThe works of Kurt Vonnegut (Breakfast of Champions, Player Piano, Cat's Cradle, Slaughterhouse-Five, God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, etc.)Thoughts? Mannlegi þátturinn fór í dag aftur í loftið og við höfum undanfarin haust farið yfir það sem leik- og sviðslistahúsin eru með á döfinni í vetur. Við byrjuðum norður á Akureyri, þar er nýtekinn við starfi leikhússtjóra Bergur Þór Ingólfsson. Hann var í beinni útsendingu frá hljóðveri RÚV fyrir norðan og sagði okkur frá því sem verður á fjölunum á Akureyri í vetur. Svo fengum við fyrsta vinkil haustsins frá Guðjóni Helga Ólafssyni. Vinkill dagsins fjallar um búsetu manna og hvað það er sem ræður því að við setjumst að á sumum stöðum en ekki öðrum, til dæmis hvers vegna enn er blómleg byggð í Vestmannaeyjum en ekki á eyjunni St. Kildu úti fyrir Suðureyjum Skotlands, sem þó fóstraði mannabyggðir í tvöþúsund ár. Svo var það lesandi vikunnar, við héldum sem sagt áfram að fá áhugaverða einstaklinga í Mannlega þáttinn á mánudögum til þess að deila með okkur bókum og höfundum sem þau hafa verið að lesa og hvaða bækur og höfundar hafa haft mest áhrif á í gegnum tíðina. Lesandi vikunnar í dag var Birgitta Björg Guðmarsdóttir, rithöfundur og tónlistarkona, en hún hefur lokið við sína aðra bók sem kemur út síðar í haust. Birgitta sagði okkur frá nýju bókinni og því sem hún hefur verið að lesa. Hún talaði um eftirfarandi bækur: Prophet Song e. Paul Lynch Heaven e. Mieko Kawakami Orlandó e. Virginíu Woolf The Argonauts eftir Maggie Nelson God bless you Mr. Rosewater e. Kurt Vonnegut Milkman e. “I see my job as trying to soothe the trauma that teenagers don't know they have yet because everybody's so busy telling them that they don't.” - A.S. KingThe older we get, the more we understand that life is impossible to actually understand. Things are not often straightforward, and the more we do discover, the more we realize there is to discover. But when we read, we want to relate, to see the words on a page and have them reflect the world back at us in a way that makes it feel more digestible. A.S. (Amy Sarig) King has found that the only way to really do that is to make the mirror as absurd as the real thing. In today's American political realm, the word weird is taking on a new layer of meaning. But for Amy, weirdness has always been a lifeline. For her and her characters. She draws on weirdness and absurdity to tap deeper into the trauma her characters face. From anger to misplaced guilt, sadness to grief, and a general sense of overwhelming anxiety, teens have so much to process. And nothing peeves Amy like adults' dismissal of these experiences, of this trauma, for teens. She is passionate about challenging that norm, validating teens, and offering a surreal mirror to help them understand the world as it truly is: weird.A.S. King is a prolific, unique writer best known for "Dig," "Ask the Passengers," "Please Ignore Vera Dietz," and "The Collectors." She has received the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, the Edgar Award, and the Printz Honor—twice. Her work often combines surrealism with raw emotional depth, offering a fresh perspective on the human experience. In this episode, she critiques pointless teen shaming by adults, discusses why surrealism resonates with young readers, and shares her advocacy for LGBTQ+ youth through Gracie's House, a nonprofit named after her late daughter. She also reveals how her cheese tattoo led to an insight into humaneness.***Connect with Jordan and The Reading Culture @thereadingculturepod and subscribe to our newsletter at thereadingculturepod.com/newsletter. ***Keeping it on brand and consistent, Amy offers us a truly unique reading challenge with a bizarrely loveable title. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: On green, published by Joe Carlsmith on March 21, 2024 on LessWrong. (Cross-posted from my website. Podcast version here, or search for "Joe Carlsmith Audio" on your podcast app. This essay is part of a series that I'm calling "Otherness and control in the age of AGI." I'm hoping that the individual essays can be read fairly well on their own, but see here for brief summaries of the essays that have been released thus far. Warning: spoilers for Yudkowsky's "The Sword of the Good.") "The Creation" by Lucas Cranach (image source here) The colors of the wheel I've never been big on personality typologies. I've heard the Myers-Briggs explained many times, and it never sticks. Extraversion and introversion, E or I, OK. But after that merciful vowel - man, the opacity of those consonants, NTJ, SFP... And remind me the difference between thinking and judging? Perceiving and sensing? N stands for intuition? Similarly, the enneagram. People hit me with it. "You're an x!", I've been told. But the faces of these numbers are so blank. And it has so many kinda-random-seeming characters. Enthusiast, Challenger, Loyalist... The enneagram. Presumably more helpful with some memorization... Hogwarts houses - OK, that one I can remember. But again: those are our categories? Brave, smart, ambitious, loyal? It doesn't feel very joint-carving... But one system I've run into has stuck with me, and become a reference point: namely, the Magic the Gathering Color Wheel. (My relationship to this is mostly via somewhat-reinterpreting Duncan Sabien's presentation here, who credits Mark Rosewater for a lot of his understanding. I don't play Magic myself, and what I say here won't necessarily resonate with the way people-who-play-magic think about these colors.) Basically, there are five colors: white, blue, black, red, and green. And each has their own schtick, which I'm going to crudely summarize as: White: Morality. Blue: Knowledge. Black: Power. Red: Passion. Green: ...well, we'll get to green. To be clear: this isn't, quite, the summary that Sabien/Rosewater would give. Rather, that summary looks like this: (Image credit: Duncan Sabien here.) Here, each color has a goal (peace, perfection, satisfaction, etc) and a default strategy (order, knowledge, ruthlessness, etc). And in the full system, which you don't need to track, each has a characteristic set of disagreements with the colors opposite to it... The disagreements. (Image credit: Duncan Sabien here.) And a characteristic set of agreements with its neighbors...[1] The agreements. (Image credit: Duncan Sabien here.) Here, though, I'm not going to focus on the particulars of Sabien's (or Rosewater's) presentation. Indeed, my sense is that in my own head, the colors mean different things than they do to Sabien/Rosewater (for example, peace is less central for white, and black doesn't necessarily seek satisfaction). And part of the advantage of using colors, rather than numbers (or made-up words like "Hufflepuff") is that we start, already, with a set of associations to draw on and dispute. Why did this system, unlike the others, stick with me? I'm not sure, actually. Maybe it's just: it feels like a more joint-carving division of the sorts of energies that tend to animate people. I also like the way the colors come in a star, with the lines of agreement and disagreement noted above. And I think it's strong on archetypal resonance. Why is this system relevant to the sorts of otherness and control issues I've been talking about in this series? Lots of reasons in principle. But here I want to talk, in particular, about green. Gestures at green "I love not Man the less, but Nature more..." ~ Byron What is green? Sabien discusses various associations: environmentalism, tradition, family, spirituality, hippies, stereotypes of Native Americans, Yo...
This week on Black and Published, Nikesha speaks with Liv Little, author of the novel, Rosewater. A writer of Jamaican and Guyanese descent living in South London, Liv tells stories about the people and places that matter to her; specifically the Black, queer, femme community. In our conversation, Liv discusses why she was dedicated to illustrating the ways Black, queer and femme communities show up and support one another. She also explains why it was important to explore the roots of homophobia and heteronormativity and how it's weaponized against queer communities. And how she made sure her heroine's journey of self discovery was filled with friendship, love, and sex. I enjoy making my own skin moisturizer out of tropical butters like shea butter, cacao and cupuaçu butter, melting those, and adding luxurious plant oils like Argan, Jojoba, and Seabuckthornfruit Oil for a creamy consistency. I don't have to add any preservatives or emulsifiers because I don't add water to those creams. Instead, I spray my face with Rose Water or Witch Hazel Hydrolate before applying the face balm for added moisture and a toning, pore-refining effect. Lavender and Cistus grow abundantly around me, so I use them to make my own herbal-infused oils, which I use directly as a body oil, or in my creams. Some oils have strong medicinal properties, you don't even have to infuse herbs into them, like Andiroba and Copaiba Oil from Brazil, and many others.
