Welcome back to That Big CEO Energy! It's been a minute, but I'm thrilled to be here with you again. In this episode, I'm peeling back the curtain on a life-changing event that reshaped my perspective—an accident with my horse that left me with torn ligaments, months of recovery, and unexpected revelations.Through this season of forced stillness, I rediscovered my love for writing, embraced deep self-reflection, and committed to playing big as I approach my 40th birthday. I'm sharing:
"I'm going to stay plugged into the Internet at large for a longer time, then I am going to have to be mindful of when the Orcs want to pop up, when I can have a cup of tea with the Dwarves and when I can just sit and chill and watch Wicked with my little selection box."Hi Sparklers,I hope 2024 wrapped up beautifully for you and you have some notes next to your reflections and thoughts about your directions? We explore how this Japanese tradition of mending broken pottery with gold has lessons for us about the therapeutic journey and the beauty in imperfection. We also discuss how these concepts apply to overcoming perfectionism in hoarding and highlight the empowering process of creating, destroying, and rebuilding. Introduction to Kintsugi and Dr. Jan Eppingstall Explanation of kintsugi as a Japanese art form of repairing objects with gold. Kintsugi and the connection to recovery from trauma. Kintsugi as a Metaphor for Healing Importance of acknowledging the process of healing without oversimplification. Reference to Amy Price's article about kintsugi symbolising care and time. Discussion of Tomas Navarro's book and the importance of action in healing. Psychological and Therapeutic Implications Metaphor in therapy for expressing complex emotions. Application of kintsugi philosophy in mental health contexts, including trauma recovery. Relation to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), acceptance, and resilience. The real-life application of acceptance and self-compassion. Creation, Destruction, and Rebuilding Create, destroy and recreate art as part of personal healing. Parallel with kintsugi in wabi sabi / finding beauty in imperfection. Personal Empowerment and Resilience Empowerment through courage and resilience using scars as a metaphor. Resonance with Leonard Cohen Idea of imperfection as a means for transformation. Contrasts with Modern Consumerism Kintsugi and wabi sabi's focus on the beauty of imperfection and impermanence. Reference to Beth Kempton's book on creating serene, beautiful spaces. Addressing Perfectionism and Hoarding Application of kintsugi principles to address perfectionism in hoarding. Exploration of creating, destroying, and rebuilding as a therapeutic exercise. "Wreck This Journal" to overcome artistic perfectionism.

Some of the most profound feedback I have received over the four seasons of The Mojo Sessions from listeners worldwide is people wanting to find a sense of peace, contentment and ultimate happiness... finding a sense of self. This Megamix is a series of 5 episodes that get to the heart of this subject... How do we feel good about ourselves and our lives? As we close the season, it seemed appropriate to reflect on one of the biggest issues facing us: who we are, what makes us happy, and how we find peace, contentment, and personal fulfilment. It's one free-flowing mega episode, five conversations so that you can listen to them back to back. The beauty of the podcast is that the sessions live on and many people who recently have found the sessions may not go back to session 1 2 or 3 to see what's there. So we pick the theme, select some gold and put it together into a megamix. Ethan Kross - Ethan is the author of "Chatter: The Voice in Our Head, Why It Matters, and How to Harness It". How do we control our spirally inner narrative, the monkey mind, that chatter we all have that can be so disempowering? Starts - 00:07:30 Laura Gassner Otting - I have included this conversation because so many people said that they related such a lot to Wonderhell, that place between having success and thinking, "Oh... Can I do that again? Was it a one-off? Was I just lucky?"... that's Wonderhell. Starts - 01:33:14 Dr Amy Silver - Amy is a psychologist and author who discusses the management of emotions for high performance and well-being. Her book, 'The Loudest Guest: How to Change and Control Your Relationship with Fear, ' is about managing our fears- what they are, how they impact us, and what the key steps are to change our relationship with fear. To find peace, we need to control the loudest guest, fear. Starts- 02:47:26 Beth Kempton - Early in The Mojo Session series, we met the beautiful Beth Kempton, author of Wabi Sabi. Wabi Sabi is a Japanese term for finding perfection in our imperfections. This is a profound conversation for anyone wanting to be in the moment, find peace, notice our surroundings and be genuinely present. Often, I get comments from people who took a great deal from this conversation. Starts - 03:51:45 Matthew Dicks - Matthew has an extraordinary backstory and is arguably one of the world's great storytellers. This conversation covers not only how to build and tell a great story but also, essentially, how we can slow time. Matthew shows us that by being conscious of moments, we can start to take back the hands of time. A lot here can apply to our business world, particularly for our brand. Starts at - 05:10:36

Whether or not snow has fallen come December, the warmth and cheer of good tidings appearing about town, the neighbors, in the shops and arriving in the mail by way of the annual Christmas cards sent from friends and family living near and far always wraps me in a figurative hug. This year, similar to last year, I will be spending Christmas at home in Bend, Oregon, and it is exactly where I want to be. And leading up to the festive day has been and will continue to be sprinkled with intentional activities, pastimes and nibbles that create a festive, cozy atmosphere I feel most fortunate to be able to savor. Each of us will go through seasons in our lives, stepping out of old chapters and into new ones when we embrace our courage to welcome what is awaiting to be given to us, and such is the case for me that I am delighting in quiet Christmases. As Nigel Slater eloquently writes in The Christmas Chronicles, in his delicious, image evoking prose, "Christmas is celebrated by Christians and non-Christians alike. It is a cultural event as much as a religious one". I share the rest of the quote in last year's holiday episode - #347 if you want to have a look, but part of why Christmas and the entirety of November and December is treasured by so many is that it is celebrated around the world and it is celebrated by people of a variety of different beliefs or non-beliefs, and that is a reason to smile and appreciate the season all the more. Perhaps inspired a bit by Beth Kempton's beloved book that I know many TSLL readers have enjoyed and return to reading each November and December, and adding to the list shared last year, episode #347, that included 9 Ways to Savor Christmas at Home, Alone, Simply Luxuriously, I wanted to share today's episode of how to savor a quiet Christmas with as few or as many people as you desire, and reveal how these thoughtful ways to enjoy this special time of year, while not extravagant, complex or even requiring money, can bring a deep richness to the season, making it all the more special. Let's take a look at the list. Visit the Show Notes: https://thesimplyluxuriouslife.com/podcast371
The final episode of 2023 where we reflect on the wisdom shared throughout the year. We're delving into a treasure trove of insights from remarkable guests, each offering a unique facet of the journey towards a fulfilling life.

Special Needs and the Christmas season. Recipe for overwhelm and meltdowns. That's why in this episode I share my favorite grounding exercise to stop the overwhelm and find my inner calm. Even when you're in a crowded supermarket or at a big family gathering. Plus an extra exercise using the 5 senses that can also help snap out of the overwhelm. If your kid needs a little help to snap out of the overwhelm, this one is great to do together! And at the end I've got a few tips to help your kid at Christmas celebrations (or any family gathering for that matter).I think I came across the snow globe exercise a couple of years ago in my favorite Christmas book: Calm Christmas and a Happy New Year by Beth Kempton. But upon rereading it I found out I gave it a little twist. Beth does the lovely Calm Christmas podcast series as well in the weeks before Christmas. It's my favorite podcast in the winter season to relax, calm down and savour the things that truly matter. I can't recommend it enough!Stay sane

The modern world calls us on us to be visible, to be sociable, to be ‘out there' and tell everyone about it, not to mention to fill our days rushing from one thing to the next to keep up with everything society makes us feel we should be doing, nevermind the pressure from advertisers to create the perfect Christmas, and the knowledge that we are soon to be bombarded by visions of other people's perfect Christmases online in the coming months, and it is a lot. This year I want to entertain the idea of giving ourselves permission to be less visible if we want to, less sociable if we want to, more ‘in here' than ‘out there' when that feels good, and to slow right down, and to do less, in a way which feels like more, without feeling guilty about it.That's why, before we dive into all the chaos of the festive season, and all the joyful themes coming up on the podcast, like gift giving, festive feasting, gathering and more, I wanted to take the time to do a whole episode on nourishing ourselves – mind, body and soul. This includes asking for, and receiving, what we need at this time of year, even if that isn't what society wants us to want, because it does not fit the commercial agenda, or the plans of our loudest friends, or anyone's expectations. Welcome to The Calm Christmas Podcast. I am Beth Kempton and this is Episode 2: Candlelight Carol, which is all about radical winter wellbeing. This episode includes:· Why retreating is a good idea · Practical ways to nourish yourself in winter· Our regular nature corner· Christmas traditions from around the world (including several shared by listeners!)· A lovely simple crafting project that might even become a Christmas gift for someone· Two lovely recipes (hello nourishment!)· Get ahead tips and more! With inspiration from @brie.doyle, @tracee_stanley, @davidjwhyte, @silverpebble2 (Emma Mitchell), @bonniesmithwhitehouse, @deliciouslyella, @ellamills__, @nancyhachisu, Fiona Danks, Jo Schofield, Elizabeth Jenner, and Emily Thomas. Come on in out of the wind, my friend. I am so glad you found this old cottage, hidden away as it is in a small village in the South West of England. Come on through to the kitchen, pull up a chair. There are gingerbread stars fresh out of the oven and steaming tea in the pot. How have you been, my friend? Friends, it's nearly time! The Calm Christmas Podcast is back for a new season. Our theme for this year is 'Seeking slow this winter'. The new season will begin on November 8, and then new episodes will drop every weekend until the new year. Over the past few years Christmas has become, for many, overcommercialised, and a time of stress and exhaustion. The Calm Christmas Podcast is about turning away from that kind of holiday season, and instead finding joy and spreading cheer without sacrificing our wellbeing. My name is Beth Kempton – author, mama, Christmas lover and host of this, The Calm Christmas Podcast, which I send out weekly in November and December, from my kitchen table in a small thatched cottage in Devon, in the South West of England. This season is all about slowing down, and I hope it's just what you need this year. This has been the hardest year of my life. It has also, in many ways, been one of the most precious. It is on the back of those shadows and that light that I bring you Season 3 of The Calm Christmas Podcast, and I hope it will be a lantern leading you through the darkness of late autumn and winter, into a fresh new year. Each week I offer ideas for inviting in the kind of Christmas you want and need this year, inspiration for getting outdoors and noticing what is happening in nature, holiday traditions from around the world including many shared by you lovely listeners, crafting ideas, journaling prompts, rituals, moonwatching, stargazing, recipes, book recommendations, ideas for making your home festive and cosy, mindful gifts that won't cost you a fortune, and perhaps most importantly, a moment of quiet in the rush of the season, to breathe, and plan how to make the most of this time with those you love, to honour those you miss, and treasure what matters to you most.I hope you will make space for The Calm Christmas Podcast this year. Subscribe now, mark your calendar for November 8 and join me back here for Episode 1: Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, which is all about seeking slow this season. And please, tell your friends. Let's make this Christmas – and this whole time of year – different and special, or whatever you want and need it to be. *********************************************The Calm Christmas Podcast has been recommended by Vanity Fair, Ideal Home Magazine, The Times, Radio Times, The Handbook, Great British Podcasts and more. Can picking up a pen change your life? This week's guest says it can! Beth Kempton has been writing nearly her entire life, and she's learned the value of a daily writing practice. Her latest book, The Way of the Fearless Writer, looks at the many ways writing can help clarify our goals, reconnect us with our dreams, and teach us to listen to our inner voice. In this episode, she explains how becoming a writer is more about what it does for your soul than becoming a best-seller — and how just a few minutes of writing a day can change the way you see the world. In this episode, you'll learn: Why writing is good for your overall well-being. How writing can help you reconnect with your creativity. Tips for starting a writing practice.
Saya membahas buku Wabi Sabi karya Beth Kempton.
Pitching, submitting, and financial uncertainty: the writerly life isn't easy before kids come into the mix, but as a writer-mom it's even trickier. We're in the midpoint of our Untraditional Traditions series, and we want to ask all of you listeners to consider something; what kind of Christmas do you want or need this year? Maybe it's a riotous, celebratory Christmas with tons of gatherings and activities, a frenzy of lights and shopping and cooking and more. But perhaps some of us might be feeling a bit tethered to the way we've always done it—and the notion of a calm Christmas sounds nothing short of divine (and kudos to you all who have found the joy of this already). Perhaps you feel like you don't really have a choice as to what kind of Christmas you have, as you've been the “keeper of Christmas” for your family and friends for so long, but our guest this week is here to tell us otherwise. Beth Kempton is a writer, a mother and has been obsessed with Christmas since she was a little girl. After one particularly stressful Christmas when her children were small (and she and her husband decided that neither of them really liked turkey) Beth began to realize that Christmas could be what she wanted it to be (sans turkey, for one!), and she started spreading that message—namely through her book “Calm Christmas and a Happy New Year.” She and Jen talk through the 5 “stories” of Christmas and which one they identify with most, they discuss when Christmas is hard and how to help yourself and others when that's the case, and the comfort and joy of letting yourself be free of anyone else's Christmas expectations and choosing the kind of season that is nurturing instead of draining. * * * Thank you to our sponsors! Thought-Provoking Quotes “I think the reason it's so important to think carefully about Christmas is because it's not just Christmas Day, it's the whole of winter. It's the season that sets us up for the year that follows. The impact on our mental health can be enormous.” - Beth Kempton “Isn't it interesting that you turn to the symbols of Christmas–the tree, the lights, whatever–as comfort in a really difficult time? And I know it's up to everyone when they put the tree up, but I'm totally the same. If that brings you joy, why not extend it as much as you can?” - Beth Kempton “When we find the quiet, it's so much easier to connect with the wisdom that we already hold and often don't even realize. I think somehow our heart is way ahead of our mind in terms of what we know, what we need to know.” - Beth Kempton “One of the things that I was really shocked by was how many people that I spoke to–I would say more than 80%--had a very sad story connected with Christmas in some way.” - Beth Kempton Guest's Links Beth's Website Beth's Instagram Beth's Facebook Beth Kempton's podcast The Way of the Fearless Writer: Ancient Eastern wisdom for a flourishing writing life Resources Mentioned in This Episode Book: Calm Christmas and a Happy New Year by Beth Kempton Book: The Way of the Fearless Writer by Beth Kempton Connect with Jen!Jen's website Jen's Instagram Jen's Twitter Jen's Facebook Jen's YouTube
