Sutradhar Mini Tales (English)

In the ancient times in the city of Kanyakubja, lived a brahmin named Ajamila. Ajamila had no qualities of a Brahmin, and he instead he spent his time in doing wrong by others. He would rob people or con them to earn a livelihood.  He spent all his life like this. He had ten sons. He loved the youngest one among them the most and named him “Narayana”. He would spend his old age playing with Narayana and would not eat before feeding young Narayana.  When Ajamila's time came, agents of Yama appeared before him to take him to Mrityuloka. Ajamila got scared and started calling out to his son, Narayana… Narayana.  When agents of Bhagwaan Vishnu heard the sound of Narayana, they rushed there and stopped the Yamadutas from taking him away. Ajamila heard the conversation between the agents of Narayana and Yamadutas. This conversation made him realise his wrong ways. He became a changed man. He left all his vices and started spending time in praying to Bhagwaan. In the end, because of these good deeds, he found a place in Vaikunthaloka.    Learn more about your ad choices. Title: Navadha Bhakti – Nine Methods of Worship12th chapter: verse 1, 2, 3, 41st verse: Arjuna asks: “Some people worship God with name and form – they chant and pray. Others worship the imperishable, the unmanifest. Which is better?”Arjuna's question comes from a conflict he is facing. From earlier chapters, Arjuna knew that there are two ways of looking upon God. (1) God as the creator and protector, who listens to our prayers (2) God as the all-pervading divine spirit, transcending names and forms. Arjuna thought he could choose between God with form or God without form.It is not a matter of our intellectual choice. It is a matter of our own spiritual evolution. A ten-year-old boy has to attend primary school first – he cannot just choose to go to a university. Similarly, we need to start our spiritual life based on where we stand and what we are fit for. Even Buddha had to evolve through 543 life cycles before becoming Buddha.2nd verse: To encourage Arjuna and to have him focus on God with name and form, Lord Krishna answers in the second verse. “There are some devotees who put their whole mind on Me, they worship Me, and they are completely dedicated to Me. To them, I reveal My true nature. They are certainly great Yogis.”Lord Krishna continues with his answer in the 3rd through 20th verse.3rd and 4th verses: “But those higher spiritual seekers, who have their senses under control, who are even-minded, who are fully focused on the Atman as the divine spirit within them and as the all-pervading divine reality without names and forms – they also attain Me alone.”Normally our mind flows towards the external world through our senses of perception and action. These advanced seekers, when they think of God, they can keep their mind focused on that divine idea. Swami Vivekananda said: “Standing in the middle of market street in San Francisco, if you can meditate, then you are a Yogi.”For those who have not reached this higher state, they should set apart some time for spiritual practices in the middle of their secular activities. There are nine ways of connecting with God, as taught by Prahlada in the Bhagavata Purana. It is called Navadha Bhakti - Sravanam (Hearing about God), Kirtanam (Chanting His Name and Glory), Vishnu smaranam (Remembering Him), Pada sevanam (Serving His Lotus Feet), Archanam (Worshipping Him), Vandanam (Prostrating before Him), Dasyam (Being His Servant), Sakhyam (Befriending Him), and Atma Nivedanam (Surrendering to Him, also known as Prapatti or Sharanagati).Devotion comes when we give a spiritual orientation to our natural emotions and feelings – we divert these emotions towards God. When we do so, we get a feeling of inner fulfillment and contentment. Our ego can also be given a spiritual orientation. If we do not direct our ego towards good channels, it will go towards negative ones. Whatever we do, do as an offering. Then spiritual qualities will come to us. Finally, we can transcend ego.Prapatti or Sharanagati is the highest state of a devotee of God. Prapatti means complete surrender and is composed of the following characteristics. (1) Always having a positive outlook in life, full of sattvic qualities such as serenity, wisdom, compassion, and broad mindedness. (2) Rejecting all the opposing qualities such as skepticism and self-doubt. (3) Strong faith that God will protect me. (4) Total self-surrender.Such a devotee considers every hindrance as a blessing in disguise. He interprets every problem of life in a spiritual way.Bhagavata Purana has beautiful stories of devotion. Ajamila's story illustrates how devotion comes to our rescue at the time of death. Ajamila initially led a spiritual life but had a deviation later. His son's name was Narayana, synonym of Lord Vishnu. At the last moment, when he uttered Narayana to call his son, his mind went towards Lord Vishnu, and he attained liberation. In the Ishavasya Upanishad, there is a verse where a dying man pleads to his mind: “O my mind, remember all the good deeds you have done.” At the point of death, we feel helpless and want to hold on to something. We should have a storehouse of good thoughts that can give us a sense of fulfillment at the last moment. In Pantheism, when we equate nature to God, our mind begins to evolve spiritually. Ancestor worship reminds us that there is something beyond the body and makes us think beyond the empirical. In image worship, one does not equate the image to God. When a spiritual seeker worships an image, he first invokes and projects the all-pervading divine principle in that image.

“While suffering at the time of death, Ajamila chanted the holy name of the Lord, and although the chanting was directed toward his son, he nevertheless returned home, back to Godhead. Therefore if one faithfully and inoffensively chants the holy name of the Lord, where is the doubt that he will return to Godhead?” (Shrimad Bhagavatam, 6.2.49)

Pujya Sri Ramchandraji Maharaj ( Babuji ) Messages -(Meditation, Raja Yoga, Training, Spirituality, PAM - Pranahuti Aided Me

Messages delivered by Spiritual Master and Divine Personality Pujya Sri Ramchandraji Maharaj of Shahjahanpur, UP, India during 1970.   For More information about Pujya Sri Ramchandraji's -Pranahuti Aided Meditation ( Modified Raja Yoga ), -Free Meditation Trainings - Details and Locations, -Audio Messages, -Books on Spirituality & Divinity -Researches on Meditation Contact: www.sriramchandra.in Episode Notes:                                        Dinana Song Translation   The song is taken from Soor-Sagar written by Saint SoorDas ji around 15th century. It is written in Brij Bhasha which is more prevalent in Mathura, Gokul, Vrindavan and certain other parts of eastern UP areas.    Lord removes afflictions of dismals (poor, suffering beings) and is a benefactor (well-wisher) of saints.    Ajamila (story attached), Geedh (Jatayu), Byadh (Jara, the hunter, who killed Lord Krishna), who was the saint (what saintliness they had) amongst them?    What Vedas did this Bird (Jatayu) study and even a woman like Ganika (Teaching a parrot to speak the Lord's Name, Ganika, the prostitute, was liberated) swam across Bhava-Sagar.  Note: Meditating on Him in remembrance and uttering His name, specially in the last moments of their lives, all aforesaid mentioned individuals were liberated by Lord.  He (Lord) becomes very happy even to receive simple rice (from Sudama) and gets contended with an offering of mere potherbs (green vegetables) or some edible leaves (from a poor devotee).    He (Lord) neither counts (take a note of) the already tasted (and then offered to Him) fruits (of Shabri) nor which ones are sweet or sour or tasteless.    Lord crowned Druva a king and lifted Prahlad out (of the atrocities of Hiranyakashipu).    Every one remembers Him (Lord) chanting Ram Ram whereas I remember Him as my true Be-Loved.  Note: Rev. Master Sri Ramchandra Maharaj of Shajahanpur points out a Lover and Be-loved relationship to be more closer to Lord than a devotee and Lord relationship.  The Story of Ajamila  (Taken from Srimad-Bhagavatam Canto 6)    Ajamila was raised according to the Vedic regulations. He was a perfectly trained brahmana and had a chaste and beautiful wife.  But one day, while he was out in the fields collecting flowers for worshipping the Lord, he happened to see a drunken sudra and a prostitute engaged in sexual embrace. Ajamila became bewildered and attracted; his mind becoming more and more attached to the prostitute. In Bhagavad-gita it says that if one contemplates sense objects, he becomes attached to them. Although Ajamila was a strict Brahmana he became helplessly entangled by seeing a man and woman engaged in sexual activity. Consequently he took this prostitute into his home as a maidservant. Inevitably, he became so entangled that he abandoned his family, wife and children and went off with the prostitute. Due to his illicit connection with the prostitute, he lost all his good qualities. He became a thief, a liar, a drunkard, even a murderer. He completely forgot about his original training as a brahmana, and his whole life was ruined.  Engaging in sinful activities, Ajamila fell down from his position, and he begot many children through the womb of the prostitute. Even towards the end of his life, around the age of eighty, he was still begetting children. It is explained that while he was dying, which is a very fearful time, he began to call out his pet child, whose name was Narayana. At that time, Yamadutas, the messengers of death, were coming. They were tying up the subtle body of Ajamila and preparing to take him to be punished by Yamaraja, the lord of death. At the same time, because he happened to be speaking the holy name of the Lord Narayana, the beautiful Visnudutas, the messengers of Vishnu, also arrived there. They checked the activities of the Yamadutas, refusing to allow them to take Ajamila for punishment.    The Yamadutas were bewildered. “Why are those effulgent and beautiful personalities checking our action? It's our duty to take sinful men to Yamaraja for punishment; then they are awarded another material body for the next life so that they can the result of their sinful activity.” There was a discussion between the Yamadutas and the Visnudutas. The conclusion was that although Ajamila was sinful through out his life and gave up his religious life, his wife and children and begot children through a prostitute, he nevertheless was purified from all the sins because at the last moment he chanted the holy name of Vishnu, Narayana.    Although Ajamila had committed so many sinful deeds, because he chanted the name of Narayana, he was relieved of all sinful activities.

Shrimad Bhagavata Mahapurana Synopsis of the Thirty Ninth Session Bhagavata Shastha Skanda (Book Six) Chapter 1 to 2  ————————————————— Pariksit Asks: How a man in this world can manage to escape from hell which is full of various horrible tortures? Sukhdevji Replies: If a man does not atone during his very life time and in the proper way, as laid down by the scriptures (Shastras) for the sins committed by him, with his mind, speech and hand, he inevitably and actually goes after death to the infernal regions (Hell) and has to bear severe tortures. Pariksit Asks:  A man knows after what he hears and reads, as to what is sinful, he repents and atones, but due to lack of control, commits the sin again. He is stuck in this vicious circle - absolving from the sin and then doing it again. How does he ever get rids of these sins then? “The elephant goes and take a nice bath, just to come and throw dust on its body again.” Sukhdevji Replies: Now, the counteraction of a sinful act, by another act of goodness is not a radical remedy.  “Even a number of holy rivers combined can not purify a Jar of wine.” ————————————————— Story There was a Learned Brahmin named Ajamila, a very pious person and belonged to a very pious family. He had a young devoted wife. He and his family lived an exemplary life.  One day he was walking past a jungle when he saw a drunk man indulging sexually with a prostitute. He stood watching and he felt an urge to experience the same sensual bliss. He understood that this was wrong and this was nothing but an attack by his senses and mind. Yet, he was unable to reason himself out of this burning desire. He forced himself home, but the next day, visited the jungle and met this prostitute and soon he got her home. He forgot about his parent and his pious wife. He left them all and started living with her. He would do everything to make her happy and fulfilled her unending demands. To the extent that this learned Brahmin became a thief, a dacoit and later a murder. Such horrendous became his life, that no one would every come near their house. Time went by, he had 10 sons and even at the age of 88 he was not free from the clutches of sensual pleasures. One day when he had gone out to fend for his family, a sage passing by, when he saw a little boy playing. He asked the boy his name, to this his mother answered that they had not named him yet. The sage asked her to call him Narayan. Ajamila was very attached to Narayan, he would not eat, drink or sleep without his beloved son. He would go around calling out for Narayan every minute. Soon the time for his death arrived, as he laid on his bed, he saw some hideous looking creatures come down and they were trying to tear his soul from his body.  He shouted out for his son, Narayan come to me, Oh Narayan come to me. The minute the servants of Lord Narayan heard his name and someone calling for him, the immediately descended. When they saw the messengers of Yamaraj, pulling Ajamila's soul. They stopped them saying they had no right over his soul.  Poor Ajamila could see and hear, the dialogue bettween the 4 servants of Narayan and the 4 Servants of Yamaraj, as to who would take his soul. There followed a long dialogue, which started with the servants of Narayan asking, Yama's servant; - What is the true characteristics of Dharma? - How is the punishment given and to whom? - Are all doers subject to punishment or only some? To which Yama's messengers answered; - Dharma is that which is enjoined by the Veda and that which is forbidden by the Veda is Adharma. Vedas are Bhagwan Narayan himself. This Ajamila they said, has violated the scripts, acted according to his own will, led a sinful life and lived for a long time in an impure state, he is a sinner, who has done no atonement for his sins to Yama, and he will...
