Host Janet Michael sits down with Dr. Michael Avery, board-certified general surgeon, Colorectal surgery specialist with Valley Health Surgical Oncology at Winchester Medical Center to discuss colorectal cancer — why awareness matters, who's at risk, how to screen, and how far treatment has come. Dr. Avery brings both personal backstory and clinical expertise to a conversation that could save your life. About Dr. Avery Originally from Charlotte, NC; discovered medicine through a hospital internship Completed undergrad at East Carolina University, medical school at Campbell University General surgery residency at Carolinas Medical Center; colorectal fellowship at UT Southwestern in Dallas Now practicing at Valley Health Surgical Oncology, Winchester Medical Center Colorectal Cancer by the Numbers 3rd most commonly diagnosed cancer in men and women 2nd leading cause of cancer death 150,000+ diagnoses in 2023; approximately 50,000 deaths Nearly half of cases are linked to modifiable risk factors Screening: What You Need to Know Screening should begin at age 45 for average-risk individuals (lowered from 50) If a first-degree relative was diagnosed, begin screening 10 years before their diagnosis age Gold standard: Colonoscopy — both diagnostic and therapeutic in one procedure Alternative options: Cologuard (DNA stool test, ~94–95% sensitivity), CT colonography A positive Cologuard result requires follow-up colonoscopy Colonoscopy prep and sedation have improved significantly — most patients feel comfortable and remember nothing Warning Signs & Symptoms Rectal bleeding (hematochezia) Abdominal pain Changes in bowel habits (constipation or diarrhea) Iron deficiency anemia Unintentional weight loss Blood mixed in stool Note: Do not dismiss these symptoms at any age — young-onset colorectal cancer is rising Risk Factors Non-modifiable: Family history, inflammatory bowel disease, genetics Modifiable: Sedentary lifestyle, obesity, diet high in processed meats/red meats/refined grains/sugar-sweetened beverages, smoking, excess alcohol Consuming 2+ sugar-sweetened beverages per day associated with nearly 2x increased risk Who's Most at Risk Men are more prone than women and have higher mortality rates African American men face a disproportionately higher risk and younger onset Young-onset colorectal cancer is increasingly left-sided and rectal, which can be more life-altering Advances in Treatment Minimally invasive surgery: hospital stays now typically 1–3 days Total neoadjuvant therapy for rectal cancer — organ preservation approach ("watch and wait") to potentially avoid surgery Targeted therapies and immunotherapies showing remarkable response rates for certain genetic profiles (e.g., work from Memorial Sloan Kettering) Early-stage colon cancer has an 85–90% five-year survival rate Key Takeaways Colorectal cancer is largely preventable and highly treatable when caught early. Get screened at 45 — or earlier if you have a family history. Don't ignore symptoms — rectal bleeding and bowel changes deserve prompt evaluation. A colonoscopy is the gold standard: one test, one time, can both find and fix the problem. Treatment today looks nothing like it did for your grandparents' generation. We are in Week 3 of a 4-part series on Unintentional Deaths from Accidents, which are the third-leading cause of death in America. This week, we're joined by our Associate Chiropractor Dr. Dodge and Alana, who heads up our Rehab Department, to talk about how the Holistic Integration Balance Program helps to prevent Falls. In this episode, you'll learn:—How one-third of all people over the age of 65 will suffer from a serious fall. And most people who fracture a hip will die within two years. —Why the FEAR of falling actually increases your likelihood of suffering from a fall.—How those over the age of 70 will lose 15% of their muscle mass every 10 years, on average.—The shocking average cost of a hospital stay due to a fall. And why a prevention program is far cheaper!—The medications that increase your risk of falls, including those for cholesterol, cardiovascular, hypertension, anti-psychotic, anti-depressants, sleep aids, and muscle relaxants. —Why Holistic Integration works on both cognitive and balance exercises at the same time. —What the patient performance assessment looks like at Holistic Integration.—Why foot orthotics are important for your balance and stability. And how foot orthotics should be considered an essential part of being healthy just like brushing your teeth or using deodorant! —The story of a primary care physician from another state who called the Holistic Integration Structural Team to ask what they had done to his patient after seeing her amazing results.—How Mary came to Holistic Integration for help with shortness of breath and now says her symptoms "are basically gone" after going through the Holistic Integration Balance program.http://www.TheVoiceOfHealthRadio.com*Receive exclusive bonus content as a member of our Voice Of Health Patreon Community:https://www.patreon.com/cw/VoiceofHealthPodcast
Ever finish a long, pressure-filled day, sit down to "decompress," and still feel drained, distracted, or guilty? You're not broken. And social media isn't automatically the problem. In this 5-Minute Drill episode of Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™, J.R. challenges the popular narrative that all screen time is bad and reframes what's really going on beneath the surface – biologically, psychologically, and spiritually. This episode is about one simple truth: Decompression isn't the enemy. Unintentional decompression is. In this episode, you'll hear: Why decompression itself isn't the problem – and how unintentional decompression quietly drains your energy and presence What brain science says about stress, self-control, and why your nervous system craves familiarity after long, pressure-filled days How Scripture reframes rest and recovery as part of human design, not a lack of discipline or faith How to use your future best self to decide what to consume before you scroll A simple framework that turns social media from a liability into a recovery tool How adding purpose and guardrails to screen time helps you show up calmer, clearer, and more present at home What you'll walk away with… You'll learn how to: Stop shaming yourself for needing recovery Recognize the difference between recovery and escape Intentionally decompress without losing your edge Transition from work to rest to presence with clarity and control No fluff. No guilt. Just a practical, science-backed and faith-aligned strategy you can use today. KEY QUOTES "The problem is NOT social media – it's [social media] consumption without purpose." - J.R. "This is why social media content that you prefer…content that you interpret as a release…it can actually reduce cognitive load and help your brain move toward recovery." - J.R. "Even Jesus withdrew regularly to quiet places—not to quit, but to recover…to restore capacity…to decompress." - J.R. We are in Week 2 of a 4-part series on Unintentional Deaths from Accidents, which are the third-leading cause of death in America. This week, we focus on the category of ”Poisoning" deaths, of which about 80% are Opioid Overdoses. In this episode, we talk about:—Why Dr. Prather calls Opioid addiction "a manufactured crisis" which was "fueled by the medical profession".—The horrifying story of the Big Pharma family behind the Opioid addiction crisis in America. And how "they knew exactly" what they were doing because their own studies correctly predicted the deaths that would come from their Opioids.—How Opioids actually increase pain due to the damage to the body's own natural Opioid production and Opioid receptors. And how Opioids will create pain in your body, even if you didn't have pain before.—Why Structure-Function Care helps reduce deaths from Opioids by healing the root cause of the pain through Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Physical Therapy, and Physiotherapies. —The role of Acupuncture in healing the body's natural Opioid receptors and helping to break the addiction of Opioids. —How Auriculotherapy (Ear Acupuncture) actually helps to heal the brain's pain patterns and is also "amazing" for any kind of addiction. —Why Structure-Function Care is so helpful and effective for severe Opioid withdrawal symptoms.—The importance of Chiropractic in balancing out the nervous system, both in helping with pain relief and in healing the body from Opioid addiction. —The Diathermy treatment at Holistic Integration that provides a gentle detoxification and can help reduce nausea and pain from Opioid detox.—How Homeopathy can help counteract all side-effects of any poison, including Prescription Medicines. And the natural Herbals that work even better than dangerous pharmaceuticals to provide pain relief.http://www.TheVoiceOfHealthRadio.com*Receive exclusive bonus content as a member of our Voice Of Health Patreon Community:https://www.patreon.com/cw/VoiceofHealthPodcast

What unsuspecting dangers lie within a garden compost bin? The Case Reports team are back to uncover a new pair of neurological mysteries. The first case this episode (1:24) comes from Edinburgh, centred on an 88-yo woman who presents with headache and eye-pain on her right side. She receives an early diagnosis of migraine, but returns a few weeks later with intermittent vomiting and subsequent progressive visual loss. https://pn.bmj.com/content/26/1/83 The second case (19:51) from Wessex features a common presentation of tingling feet, with a 62-yo man who develops gait instability. More curious are a significant drop in his weight, as well as a scaly patch on his chest. https://pn.bmj.com/content/26/1/63 The case reports discussion is hosted by Prof. Martin Turner¹, who is joined by Dr. Ruth Wood² and Dr. Babak Soleimani³ for a group examination of the features of each presentation, followed by a step-by-step walkthrough of how the diagnosis was made. These case reports and many others can be found in the October 2025 issue of the journal. And the Big Pharma family behind it all.—The Surgeon General letter to all physicians in 2019 that called on fewer Opioid drugs being prescribed. —How an elderly person who falls and breaks a hip will usually die within two years. —Why balance assessment and treatment are so important for adults over the age of 65. And how an overwhelming majority of falls happen at home. —The Surgeon General recommendations in 2019 that pain treatment should be prioritized with Structure-Function Care like Chiropractic, Acupuncture, and Physiotherapy instead of addictive prescriptions. Hiring should be about finding the right person. Too often, though, the tools and methods organizations use actually work against them. Job postings filter candidates out for lacking skills they could easily and quickly learn. Competency checklists based on someone else's philosophy of what leadership looks like rather than what actually works inside their organization. Assessment tools that aren't scientifically validated or that screen for average profiles when the role needs something entirely different. The funnel narrows before employers even realize it. And when a poor fit does get through, the individual can spend months or years struggling against expectations that were never clearly defined. So how should organizations rethink the way they assess and select talent? My guest this week is Dr. Stephanie Puckett, founder of SynergyMind Consulting. In our conversation, she draws on 20 years of experience in organizational psychology to reveal where hiring processes quietly break down and the implications for both employers and employees when they do. In the interview, we discuss: The most common mistakes employers make in hiring Unintentional restriction of talent pools Skill and competency transfer The danger of using tools with no scientific validation The critical role of talent acquisition teams Data science versus psychology Finding confirmation bias in big datasets The importance of realistic job previews How will hiring develop in the next 2 to 3 years Follow this podcast on Apple Podcasts. We got our big juicy pumps for this amazing episode! We started by talking about a couple pieces of personal news, including a shockingly cool number 4 ranking in the Ultra Runner of the Year voting... and some tough health findings from an MRI. The newest shoe review is a medical boot. It's still better than most trail shoes. The big science discussion was on a pair of studies on advanced female runners, with both finding low carbohydrate intake on training days. One of the studies on elite athletes found that 94.3% had low energy availability! We broaden out the discussion into nutritional approaches generally. And David tries to broaden it out into a thinkpiece about the food pyramid. At a certain point, maybe your thinkpiece is so wrong that you eventually loop around and become right? Don't answer that. And this one was full of great topics! Other topics: our approach to training and health with the foot, a study on using heat training to substitute for other types of training, what we'd spend with $200 a month, how we are making money off AI, the Burrito League, some quick thoughts on continuous lactate monitors, Shelby Houlihan and Molly Seidel setting records at trail races, Raya for trail and ultra runners, sleep and FKTs, blood tests and training for downhills in a flat place. We love you all! In this episode of the DCS Podcast, we unpack a pattern that shows up over and over again with students inside DCS and in the journey of so many coaches: taking breaks from your business without even realizing it.You'll learn the difference between intentional and unintentional breaks in your coaching business, and why unintentional breaks quietly erode your confidence, consistency, and results. You'll hear a personal story about a season where the business looked “consistent” on the outside—posts were going up, clients were being coached—but the energy, leadership, and enthusiasm were completely offline. That was actually an unknown, unintentional break.Using simple analogies (like a clothing store that says “Open” but has no merchandise inside), this episode helps you see where this might be happening in your own business and how to get back into aligned, belief-shifting action. You'll also get a practical “break diagnostic” you can use right now to identify what kind of break you're in and how to convert an unintentional break into a healthy, intentional one.If you've ever felt guilty for needing rest, or confused about why you're “doing all the things” but not seeing the results you want, this episode will feel like a deep breath and a reset. In This Episode, You'll Learn:The three types of breaks in your business:Intentional breaksKnown unintentional breaksUnknown unintentional breaksWhy intentional breaks are not only healthy but necessary when your brain is the primary “equipment” in your coaching businessHow unintentional breaks:Often start as “just procrastination”Quietly become emotional avoidanceLead to more shame, guilt, and avoidance over timeThe powerful analogy of:A store with a “Closed” sign (known unintentional break)A store that says “Open” but has no clothes inside (unknown unintentional break)The three core thoughts that usually fuel unintentional breaks:“This isn't working.”“This should be easier.”“No one wants what I have to offer.”How these thoughts, when avoided, harden into beliefs and start to define your identity as a coachWhat it looks like to be:Busy and “doing all the things”But not actually selling, leading, or shifting beliefsThe Break Diagnostic:How to scan your behavior (Are you actually showing up? Are you selling?)How to scan your story (Are you grounded, or stuck in confusion/blame?)How to scan your self-coaching (Are you going deep, or only asking surface strategy questions?)How to convert an unintentional break into an intentional one, build clean boundaries around it, and return to your business feeling grounded, clear, and refreshed instead of ashamed or behindIf you realized you might be on an unintentional break, or you want to lead your coaching business with more clarity, mastery, and emotional congruence — make sure you're subscribed to the DCS Podcast and share this episode with another physician coach who needs it. Ignorance is no excuse for the law. Just because you did something accidentally doesn't mean you're not guilty. So how should we address unintentional sin? Leviticus 4 teaches us that God takes all forms of sin very seriously, and we should too.

As companies rush to implement AI and automated decision-making tools, they may be walking into a legal minefield. On this episode of Today in Tech, host Keith Shaw speaks with attorney Rob Taylor from Carstens, Allen & Gourley about the growing legal risks tied to agentic AI, automated hiring, and the rise of ADM (automated decision-making) regulations. Rob breaks down: * Why AI tools used in hiring and insurance may trigger liability * How companies are getting ADM compliance wrong * What laws already apply even without new AI regulations * Real-world examples like credit scoring, job screening, and sentiment analysis * Why disclosure, explainability, and data retention are essential * Who's liable: the company or the AI developer? With a Foley balloon, Cervidil, and the lowest possible Pitocin drip, she labored quietly on all fours, declined unnecessary interventions, and delivered under the fetal ejection reflex—so calmly that all the nurses and doctors from around the maternity ward gathered to witness a rare physiologic Pitocin birth without an epidural. Her second birth brought the perfect contrast: a planned home birth that stalled, restarted after midnight, and ended an hour later with three strong pushes before the midwife could arrive. In this episode, we explore how to choose hospitals based on cesarean rates, what to know about induction protocols (low and slow, and when to stop Pitocin), gestational hypertension vs. preeclampsia, recognizing white-coat hypertension, and why mental training may be the most powerful tool in birth.**********Check out all our sponsor offers here: Needed
