Today's guest is Narayan Subramanian. Under the Biden administration, he was a legal advisor, and then an advisor to the Secretary at the Department of Energy (DOE). Later, he was the Director for Energy Transition at the White House National Security Council. We've talked to previous guests about how to ensure government money flows fast and effectively. At the DOE, Subramanian helped ensure that a big influx of money could best be used to support innovative energy projects. If you've followed Statecraft a while, you know we're very interested in how to actually deploy taxpayer dollars most effectively. Narayan played a key role in making sure that DOE could do just that.We Discuss:* How the DOE took its modern form* Why don't tools for funding R&D work for funding deployment?* Does the federal interest in IP stop banks from supporting new tech?* What kinds of technologies can you support with “other transactions authority”?The full transcript is available at www.statecraft.pub. In this episode, we speak with Priti Narayan about the devastating floods that hit Chennai, India—a city grappling with the compounding effects of climate change and urban inequality. Reflecting on the floods a decade later, Priti unpacks how such dramatic events both reveal and deepen the everyday structural violence embedded in urban life.We explore how climate disasters are experienced unevenly, shaped by social, economic, and spatial injustices, and how responses to these events often reproduce the same inequalities they expose.Priti also shares powerful reflections on the role of public scholarship and activism—especially in moments when violence is not always visible, but deeply felt by marginalized communities.Priti is an Assistant Professor at UBC Geography. Her research and teaching interests center around urban processes and politics, particularly in India. In her primary research project, she examines how contemporary urban development interacts with state-society relations in Chennai, India. She uses ethnographic and archival methods to investigate how residents negotiate with local politicians, bureaucrats, and activists to preserve citizenship in urban landscapes marked by violent, large-scale slum evictions. She has been learning from collective struggles for tenure security for the urban poor in Chennai for over 13 years now. Priti is passionate about collaborative activist scholarship which highlights lived experiences — drawing on the politics of expertise and knowledge production, feminist methodologies, and public scholarship. She frequently collaborates to write about economic and social protections for unorganized workers and urban development in Tamil Nadu. Her writing has appeared in news and media outlets such as The Times of India, The Hindu, OpenDemocracy, and Kafila, among others. We encourage you to read Priti's public articles, such as these:Slow violence and the Spectacle – Dispossession, segregation, and the Chennai Floods: Priti NarayanRosenman, E. and P. Hosted by writers Emma Atkinson and Jordyn Reiland, RadioEd is a triweekly podcast created by the DU Newsroom that taps into the University of Denver's deep pool of bright brains to explore the most compelling and interesting research coming out of DU. See below for a transcript of this episode. This week, production assistant and DU graduate student Madeleine Lebovic steps in to host. Show Notes When Hollywood paints a picture of childhood, it's often one of nostalgia-tinged wonder. Playing outside, moments of carefree innocence and the highs and lows of the adventure of self-discovery. But this is not the childhood that everyone experiences. For many, childhood was a place of uncertainty and fear. And when those kids grow up to become parents, those hard realities can impact their own parenting. How can we break those cycles of intergenerational trauma? This week on RadioEd, Madeleine Lebovic chats with Associate Professor of Clinical Child Psychology Angela Narayan about the surprising science behind reflecting on positive childhood experiences – and how it can help parents counter childhood adversity. Angela Narayan, PhD, LP, is an Associate Professor in the Clinical Child Psychology PhD Program in the Department of Psychology at the University of Denver (DU). She is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She received her PhD in Clinical Child Psychology from the Institute of Child Development at the University of Minnesota and completed a predoctoral internship and post-doctoral fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry and Child Trauma Research Program at UCSF. Narayan directs a program of research that examines how childhood adversity and positive childhood experiences have enduring effects on development across adolescence, adulthood and parenthood. She is particularly interested in understanding intergenerational pathways of adversity, psychopathology, and resilience in populations with diverse backgrounds. Narayan is a licensed clinical psychologist in Colorado and a clinical supervisor in the Center for Child and Family Psychology (CCFP) in the DU Department of Psychology. Her expertise is in trauma-informed therapies (e.g., Child-Parent Psychotherapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy) and relationship-based and parent-focused treatments (e.g., Parent Management Training, Interpersonal Psychotherapy). She also directs the DU Department of Psychology's PROTECT Lab where researchers study the intergenerational transmission of risk and resilience across families and generations. Join us as we delve into the fascinating world of biodegradation with Professor Ramani Narayan of Michigan State University, an expert on polymer science and the interaction between microbes and plastics. Discover how bacteria and fungi use carbon as a vital source of food and energy, and what's stopping them from consuming accumulated environmental plastic waste. In this episode, we explore: The function of biofilms as microbial habitats versus substrates in biodegradation The complexities of extracting and consuming carbon from common plastic materials — why is it so challenging for bacteria? What influences bacteria to consume one material over another, and the types of chemical bonds they can break down How temperature affects the rate and efficiency of biodegradation The ongoing challenges and innovative solutions needed to scale microbial degradation effectively for environmental impact Tune in to hear the full conversation and learn more about Narayan's work at Ramani Narayan | Michigan State University (msu.edu).
