कृष्णाय वासुदेवाय हरये परमात्मने कीर्तन । Krishnaya Vasudevaya Haraye Paramatmane Krishnaya Vasudevaya Haraye Paramatmane shloka depicts the love of Lord Krishna towards his devotees. Govind destroys the sufferings, tribulations and pains of his devotees and maintains a graceful gaze on his devotees. This form of Lord Shri Krishna has been worshiped time and again. Shri Hit Premanand Govind Sharan ji has also mentioned many times about the power of this mantra. This verse is of no use as a shield for a person in distress. The way Krishna accepted the sufferings of his supreme devotee and friend Arjuna as his own, helped him by becoming a charioteer in the great war of Mahabharata and gave invaluable knowledge of Gita, it shows that Shri Krishna destroys the sufferings of all his devotees. I bow to Shri Govind. There are so many examples in the past from Sudama, Draupdi, Surdas, Meera and lakhs of devotees whose grief was destroyed by Sri Govind. My salutations to the ocean of compassion Shri Krishna. His lotus feet are the boat to take us across the ocean of material life. 4) When his friend Sudama brought Him some low-grade rice, He accepted it, embraced him and cried, "O My brother, you haven't come for such a long time! Where have you been? Did you forget Me?" Worship that Krsna! 5) In the Mahabharata war Syamaliya (sweet, black, crooked Krsna) became Arjuna's chariot driver, directing the horses on the battlefield. He lifted Govardhana Hill at such a tender age and He subdued Kaliya Naga by putting a rope through his nose, dragging him out of the Yamuna, Worship that Krsna! 6) Worship that Kanhaiya who immediately came to protect Draupadi's chastity by increasing her cloth unlimitedly when she was surrounded by so many wicked men.

Those who worship other gods with shraddha – not for highest enlightenment but for material prosperity – in reality, they are worshipping Me, although they are using the wrong method and are not aware of it. To whichever god we pray, the prayer goes to Brahman. Fulfillment also comes from Brahman.”25th verse: “The votaries of different deities, they reach those deities. The one whom you worship, you reach him.”There are two ways that we can think about Absolute Reality. In the early stage, we may look upon it as the presiding deity, as the creator god, that decides the destiny of creation. As we evolve and get closer to the divine within, we develop a higher, universal outlook. At the highest level, we see Absolute Reality as the source of everything.In the Bhagavata Purana, there is a dialog between King Nimi and the Nava Yogis. In answer to the King's question: “Who is an ideal devotee of God?”, one of the sages gives the following answer: “The one who sees the presence of God in all beings, and who sees the presence of all beings in God.“ This ideal devotee sees the entire creation as one spiritual family.26th verse: “If you offer with bhakti (devotion) even a leaf or flower or fruit or water – I accept it as the devout gift of the pure-hearted devotee.”Bhakti is defined as the spontaneous, natural flow of love towards God. It is not for God's sake that we love God. Spirituality is the manifestation of higher qualities present in us. When they are developed, our minds naturally turn towards God.Bhakti and purity of heart are what is important – it is what compels the Lord to accept the offering. A big ritual is in no way superior to a leaf offered with a pure heart. What we are offering is not a leaf or flower – we are offering ourselves and our own heart, which is what the Lord cares about.The story of Lord Krishna and Sudama illustrates that the Lord only cares about the bhakti with which the offering is made. Sudama carried ordinary, parched rice as a gift for Lord Krishna – he was hesitant to even offer it to him. But Lord Krishna accepted it with great delight, exclaiming how wonderful the gift was. Lord Krishna's acceptance (of the gift) returned to Sudama as prosperity in an invisible way.In the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna, there are contrasting illustrations of bhakti. One example is of a person offering the choicest items to God, but with elaborate display and splendor. This is rajasic bhakti – it is not the most sublime. Another example is of a person who lives in a humble hut, offers fruit or water, but spends his time in meditation. This is sattvic bhakti. The third type of bhakti is tamasic bhakti, which expresses itself as laziness, indifference, and ignorance.When we are evolving spiritually, we should have a sense of value for what we offer to God. We should offer something that we consider as precious, not something insignificant. When we reach a stage where the mind naturally flows to God, then we can mentally offer our hearts to God.Shankaracharya, in one of his verses, gives a beautiful description of the spiritual psychology of a devotee of the highest type. He feels “O Lord, you are my Atman. My friends are my own pranas. My body is your holy shrine. Everything I do – all my actions and interactions, in thought, word and deed – are my puja (offerings) to you.”For such a devotee of the highest type, his whole life becomes spiritualized. Every thought becomes a meditation, every word becomes a mantra, every action becomes an act of worship, every travel becomes a pilgrimage, every movement becomes a circumambulation around the deity, and the whole life becomes an offering to God.27th verse: “Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer, whatever gift you give to others, whatever austerities you practice – do that as an offering to Me.”This is the highest state of a spiritual person, where every secular activity becomes spiritualized. Every secular activity becomes puja. The difference between work and worship disappears.

It is this divine reality that is to be realized.Omkara, as a sound-symbol, represents the totality and oneness of existence, and the essence of the Vedas. It represents the unified universe consisting of the three worlds of existence: below the earth, upon the earth, and celestial level. In monotheistic religions, it corresponds to the unity of all divine personifications – Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshvara. It is the beginning, middle, and end of all human speech. In Patanjali Yoga Sutra, it is described as the name of the Lord.Gayatri mantra has 24 letters and is a very sublime mantra. Om is an integral part of Gayatri mantra. It invokes the effulgent divine reality, that is present everywhere, and it takes one beyond the three levels of existence - towards the transcendental.The 17th verse puts a very high philosophical ideal – oneness and unity of human family – in the language of everyday human relations.19th verse: “As the sun, I am the heat. I withhold and send forth rain. I am immortal and also dead. I am also the being and the non-being.”The 19th verse uses the sublime technique of using language that seems contradictory to point to its transcendental meaning. A poet in Vedantic tradition is one who is able to see far into things and bring out the grandeur of the subject he is writing on.Ramanuja in his commentary on this verse says: “I provide both heat and rain. I am the source of energy that sustains human life. I am the sequence in the seasons. I am the supreme principle behind the harmonious existence of life in this world. I am the immortal principle behind that which is immortal. I am the finite principle behind that which is finite.”One cannot transcend death at the physical level. When we realize our true nature and its immortal dimension, we transcend death. Brihadaranyaka Upanishad has a profound dialog between Yajnavalkya and Maitreyi on the topic of immortality.Both existence and non-existence are non-distinct from the divine reality. Nothing can be excluded from that reality, not even the concept of evil. Vedanta does not define God as the totality of all positive virtues. It replaces the doctrine of evil with the doctrine of ignorance. As we evolve, so called evil is understood to be a stage where we experience something due to our lack of the highest spiritual enlightenment. At the highest level, all secular activities become spiritualized.Swami Vivekananda said: “Worshipping the terrible is a sign of sannyasa (mendicant).” A Mendicant is a person who accepts everything. For him, the totality alone exists – it includes good and bad. But, at a spiritually evolved stage, he automatically accepts only the good – he cannot harm others, as described in the 18th chapter of Bhagavad Gita.In the 66th verse of the 18th chapter, Lord Krishna describes the spiritual psychology of self-surrender. He says to Arjuna: “Give up all distinctions between dharma and adharma. Attach your will to God's will. Attach your mind and emotions to the divine. Then you will naturally choose the right dharma.”20th and 21st verse: There are those who perform rituals for material prosperity and long life. They are also worshipping the same divine Lord, but not in its most sublime sense. They are at the beginning of spiritual life. They go to heaven, and once their spiritual merits are exhausted, they return to the world. For them, the cycle of birth and death continues.22nd verse: “People who meditate on God as not separate, who worship Him in all beings, who are always engaged in that divine pursuit – for such people, I carry what they lack, and preserve what they already have.”Yoga in this verse means helping you attain what you have not already attained. Kshema in this verse means preserving what you have already attained.Lord Krishna makes a big promise in this verse. “If you do God's work, God will work for you.” We experience this in our lives. When we do good, noble deeds without selfish motives, then some of our problems are automatically solved. A noble act done for the good of others is an act of worship and generates spiritual energy.The story of Lord Krishna and Sudama illustrates this promise. When Sudama gave parched rice to Lord Krishna, it returned to him as prosperity in an invisible way.”

Bhaj Govindam It is the grand finale - The last verse written by Shankaracharya in the form of dvadasa-manjarika-stotra of Bhaj Govindam. This verse I would call as ‘A Shaj Upaye - Simple solution'. This is the 13 Verse (the last verse) if we consider the opening verse. However, the first verse is the re-affirming verse. A repeated reminder, after every verse when Guru Shankaracharya says, this won't help, that won't help, this is wrong, that is wrong. He tells us only Hari Naam is the way. However, he knows that even the learned find it difficult to understand/hold on to this abstract concept called God - Saakaar or Niraakar. He provides the bewildered one a simple solution Just have faith in the Lord (don't try to understand him or his ways, just love him) and Hold onto the feet of a 'Sajjan Purusha.' A tale highlighting the power of friendship
The question asked during the discourse was - how does one know if they are a true devotee? The difference between a true devotee vs. all other types of devotees is that for true devotees, their surrender towards God is complete. This means that if something in life doesn't go well, a true devotee doesn't start questioning god with "Why me?". On the other hand, a devotee who is still figuring out the path immediately starts questioning and expects their problems to be fixed immediately. Basically, a true devotee lets nature take its course and they have complete faith and surrender. To demonstrate true faith and surrender, Om Swami narrates a beautiful story from the scriptures of Sudama and Krishna. When Sudama visited Krishna during a time in need, not once did Sudama ask Krishna for anything, and nor did Krishna ask him if he needed anything. Even though in his mind, Sudama did question why Krishna had not asked him why he was there - He never gave up his faith. It's not that true devotees don't question or doubt, what they don't do is, let doubt drown their faith. Going on to explain the mark of a true devotee, Om Swami says that they are content and take responsibility for their own actions and life. They also don't defend or justify their faith to anyone. The presence of God in your life doesn't mean your times will be without suffering. the presence of God in your life only means one thing, that you are not alone. The ship of life is secure with devotion - you are still responsible for sailing it, but ultimately it is safe and secure - that is what true devotion is. Pearls of Wisdom from this talk: 1. It is written in Brij Bhasha which is more prevalent in Mathura, Gokul, Vrindavan and certain other parts of eastern UP areas. Lord removes afflictions of dismals (poor, suffering beings) and is a benefactor (well-wisher) of saints. Ajamila (story attached), Geedh (Jatayu), Byadh (Jara, the hunter, who killed Lord Krishna), who was the saint (what saintliness they had) amongst them? What Vedas did this Bird (Jatayu) study and even a woman like Ganika (Teaching a parrot to speak the Lord's Name, Ganika, the prostitute, was liberated) swam across Bhava-Sagar. Note: Meditating on Him in remembrance and uttering His name, specially in the last moments of their lives, all aforesaid mentioned individuals were liberated by Lord. He (Lord) becomes very happy even to receive simple rice (from Sudama) and gets contended with an offering of mere potherbs (green vegetables) or some edible leaves (from a poor devotee). He (Lord) neither counts (take a note of) the already tasted (and then offered to Him) fruits (of Shabri) nor which ones are sweet or sour or tasteless. Lord crowned Druva a king and lifted Prahlad out (of the atrocities of Hiranyakashipu). Every one remembers Him (Lord) chanting Ram Ram whereas I remember Him as my true Be-Loved. Note: Rev. Master Sri Ramchandra Maharaj of Shajahanpur points out a Lover and Be-loved relationship to be more closer to Lord than a devotee and Lord relationship. The Story of Ajamila (Taken from Srimad-Bhagavatam Canto 6) Ajamila was raised according to the Vedic regulations. He was a perfectly trained brahmana and had a chaste and beautiful wife. But one day, while he was out in the fields collecting flowers for worshipping the Lord, he happened to see a drunken sudra and a prostitute engaged in sexual embrace. Ajamila became bewildered and attracted; his mind becoming more and more attached to the prostitute. In Bhagavad-gita it says that if one contemplates sense objects, he becomes attached to them. Although Ajamila was a strict Brahmana he became helplessly entangled by seeing a man and woman engaged in sexual activity. Consequently he took this prostitute into his home as a maidservant. Inevitably, he became so entangled that he abandoned his family, wife and children and went off with the prostitute. Due to his illicit connection with the prostitute, he lost all his good qualities. He became a thief, a liar, a drunkard, even a murderer. He completely forgot about his original training as a brahmana, and his whole life was ruined. Engaging in sinful activities, Ajamila fell down from his position, and he begot many children through the womb of the prostitute. Even towards the end of his life, around the age of eighty, he was still begetting children. It is explained that while he was dying, which is a very fearful time, he began to call out his pet child, whose name was Narayana. At that time, Yamadutas, the messengers of death, were coming. They were tying up the subtle body of Ajamila and preparing to take him to be punished by Yamaraja, the lord of death. At the same time, because he happened to be speaking the holy name of the Lord Narayana, the beautiful Visnudutas, the messengers of Vishnu, also arrived there. They checked the activities of the Yamadutas, refusing to allow them to take Ajamila for punishment. The Yamadutas were bewildered. “Why are those effulgent and beautiful personalities checking our action? It's our duty to take sinful men to Yamaraja for punishment; then they are awarded another material body for the next life so that they can the result of their sinful activity.” There was a discussion between the Yamadutas and the Visnudutas. The conclusion was that although Ajamila was sinful through out his life and gave up his religious life, his wife and children and begot children through a prostitute, he nevertheless was purified from all the sins because at the last moment he chanted the holy name of Vishnu, Narayana. Although Ajamila had committed so many sinful deeds, because he chanted the name of Narayana, he was relieved of all sinful activities.

Matthew 'Sudama' Ceuvorst was born and raised in Pittsburgh PA, and took interest in the human condition from a young age, leading him to Penn State University where he received a Bachelors of Science in Psychology. He traveled to Plum Village in France, to practice meditation and mindful living under Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. From there, his journeys led him to India, where he was introduced to the 4 Paths of Yoga. He returned to India two years later to earn his hatha yoga instructor certification from the Vinyasa Yoga School in Rishikesh. It was these adventure and inquiries that gradually, but inevitably led Matthew to Ram Dass and the wisdom teachings of Neem Karoli Baba. Matthew’s journey from psychology, into psychedelics, Buddhism, and eventually Bhakti, awakened in him a yearning for a life of service, devotion, and satsang. Matthew currently serves as a caretaker for his teacher, Ram Dass and facilitates biannual pilgrimages to India, the Himalayan Yoga Yatra. When he is not traveling, Matthew resides in the expansive mountains of Asheville, NC, where he has spent the last year managing the Asheville Yoga Center, teaching yoga and mindfulness to incarcerated individuals, and deepening his relationship with satsang. In our first interview-based show on BLOCK RUNNERS, we introduce our third co-host - Amal Sudama, an Ethereum developer. He believes that decentralization, both politically and data-architecturally, allows blockchains to be: - Less likely to fail because they rely on many separate components. - Harder to attack because the networks are spread across many computers. - Harder for users with malicious intent to take advantage of users who are using the platform for its intended purpose. - Hard-coded with a survival instinct that makes the blockchain very resistant to attacks. If one node stops working, or even 100 nodes, the blockchain survives, assuming there is at least one node up and running. - Resilient because the blockchain does not stop working even if the power is lost in an entire country, a feature which cannot be said of many of the existing systems we use on the Internet. Today, companies like Facebook, Amazon, and Google dominate the Internet. They offer many free or cheap services because they are able to collect valuable data on their users, and find ways to monetize that data. As a user of the modern internet, one is never too sure where their demographic and personal data is being used. Through the implementation of decentralization, also called Web 3, data does not have to be stored in centralized systems. Data can be verified independently and individuals can transact directly with each other, instead of requiring a centralized entity to verify these interactions. Micropayments become a feasible method of being rewarded for value created. Users control how their data is used and accessed over the Internet, and can be paid for the use of their data. Decentralization dis-intermediates central control of systems. Instead of a single company being responsible for writing information to a centralized database, the responsibility of recording transactions falls to anyone who wants to participate in a blockchain. Thus, decentralized blockchain-based systems are a significant shift in thinking. They are different both philosophically and technically than our current web-based back-end infrastructure and are specifically engineered to be an alternative to the centralized systems we are familiar with. God is not impressed by anything-neither knowledge nor austerity. He is only impressed by love. Swami Mukundananda in this episode cites example of Sage Balmiki, Dhruv, Gajendra the elephant, Kubja, Sudama and Ugrasen and says that they neither had good conduct, nor age, or education, or beauty, or wealth or chivalry, still God Graced them and accepted them.
