Shanti Devi's reincarnation case, one of the most compelling and well-documented in modern studies, unfolded in 1920s and 1930s India, a period of cultural revival and anti-colonial resistance led by Mahatma Gandhi. Born in Delhi on December 11, 1926, Shanti began claiming at age four to be Lugdi Devi, a woman from Mathura who died in 1925 after childbirth, about a year before Shanti's birth. She provided precise details about Mathura, her husband Kedar Nath Chaubey, their son, and her past life, using Mathura's dialect and terms unfamiliar to her Delhi family. Her school principal verified Kedar's existence, and a surprise visit from Kedar and his family saw Shanti correctly identify them, emotionally reconnecting with her former husband and son. Intrigued, Gandhi commissioned an investigation in 1935, during which Shanti led researchers to Lugdi's Mathura home, noted town changes, and located an empty coffer where she claimed to have hidden money (Kedar admitted removing it). The 1936 commission report concluded Shanti was Lugdi's reincarnation, finding no rational explanation for her knowledge. Shanti later described her death and afterlife experiences, lived a quiet spiritual life, and passed away in 1987. Her case, extensively studied and covered by media, remains a cornerstone in reincarnation research. This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 12th of December and here are the headlines. In a significant ruling on Thursday, the Supreme Court directed that civil courts cannot hear cases challenging the ownership and title of places of worship. This includes major disputes like the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi and the Krishna Janmabhoomi temple in Mathura. The court clarified that no new suits can be filed, and no interim or final orders, including surveys, will be allowed until further hearings. Several similar suits are pending in different locations across India. On Thursday, the Union Cabinet approved two crucial bills related to holding simultaneous elections for Lok Sabha and state assemblies. One bill proposes a constitutional amendment, while the other seeks to align assembly elections in Delhi, Puducherry, and Jammu & Kashmir. These bills are expected to be introduced in the current Parliament session. This development follows months of discussions after the Kovind-led committee's recommendations on simultaneous elections.Thursday saw chaos in both Houses of Parliament. The Lok Sabha was adjourned after BJP MP Nishikant Dubey raised allegations about Congress leader Sonia Gandhi's alleged ties to billionaire George Soros. Opposition MPs protested fiercely, even climbing the Speaker's dais. The Rajya Sabha was adjourned after a disruption over a motion by Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury, leading to further tension in the parliamentary proceedings for the day.Ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal announced that the Mahila Samman Rashi Scheme will increase the monthly allowance for women to Rs 2,100, up from Rs 1,000, if AAP is re-elected. The scheme, approved by Chief Minister Atishi's Cabinet, is aimed at supporting women's financial empowerment. The announcement is seen as part of the AAP's strategy to secure women's votes in the upcoming elections. In a clash between security forces and alleged Maoists in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region, seven Maoists were killed early Thursday. The encounter, which lasted over seven hours, took place in the dense jungles of Abujhmad, a heavily forested and un-surveyed area. The police are continuing search operations to confirm the number of casualties and recover weapons. The region has long been a hotspot for Maoist insurgents, making security operations challenging. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express.
'Were Indian Muslims right to reject Babri compromise? Sambhal, Ajmer is what they said would happen. As we all know, even though some Muslims I knew believed that a compromise was worth the effort, the Babri Masjid Action Committee, which claimed to speak for India's Muslims, refused to consider any compromise. It was a game of dominoes, they said. Advani would accept this compromise, make them shift the mosque, and then, two years later, he would lay claim to Kashi and Mathura, and it would all start over again', says Author & Columnist Vir Sanghvi. First, as Devendra Fadnavis begins his third tenure as Maharashtra's Chief Minister, The Indian Express's Shubhangi Khapre discusses what sets him apart as a politician and highlights key achievements from his first term.Next, The Indian Express's Deeptiman Tiwary explains why the RSS, despite its vocal stance on Kashi, Mathura, and Ayodhya in the past, has remained silent on Sambhal and Ajmer (18:26).Finally, we provide a quick update on the stampede that occurred during the premiere of the film Pushpa 2, which tragically resulted in the death of a 39-year-old woman (27:55).Hosted, written and produced by Shashank BhargavaEdited and mixed by Suresh Pawar

On Eavesdroppin' comedy podcast this week, Geordie & Michelle look at reincarnation, synchronicity and near death experiences...In December 1926, a baby girl named Shanti Devi was born in Delhi, India. When Shanti was 4 years old, she surprised her parents by claiming she was not Shan't Devi but a woman called Lugdi. Over the next few years, Shanti continued to astonish her parents with memories of a previous life where she had been married and living in a far away town called Mathura. Listen now to hear Geordie recount some of Shanti's incredible recollections of her life as Lugdi and why her story is considered proof that reincarnation exists...Michelle follows with a look at a near death experience, a medical miracle and the power of synchronicity. As our Eavesdroppers will know, Michelle's mum Jen was recently gravely ill in hospital. One evening, Michelle watched a YouTube video about the incredible near-death experience of a woman called Anita Moorjani and it changed her perspective on her mum's illness and how to approach it. Listen now to hear about Jen's journey and recovery, Anita's near death experience and how medical miracles really can happen. So pop on your headphones, grab a brown lemonade and join Geordie & Michelle for this week's episode, plus chit-chat about Gisele Pelicot, Marina Abramovic and a few new telly recs, only on Eavesdroppin' podcast. Presenting the next song from Naatak's VRINDAVAN, our 110th production. In Naee Jaaoon, presented as a Meera Bhajan, a widow pleads to not be asked to leave Vrindavan as she wants to devote herself to her one and only true love. About the PlayIn 2014, Bollywood's dream girl Hema Malini became Member of Parliament from Mathura. When visiting a widow-home in Vrindavan, she suggested that Vrindavan widows should remain in Bengal instead of coming to over-crowded Vrindavan. The uproar that followed involved many actors – NGOs, the BJP, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and Hema Malini. This incident provides the inspiration for Vrindavan, City of Widows, in which 12 feisty widows live in raucous celebration until a Bollywood actress arrives to disrupt their lives. Vrindavan is a grand musical, juxtaposing the colorful love of Radha and Krishna with the stark existence of Vrindavan widows, and told through humor and wit, the songs of Meera Bai and the gyrations of Bollywood songs. The play features spectacular sets, costumes and lights, along with live music by Nachiketa Yakkundi and his team.A news item on the incident that became the genesis of this play: http://www.ndtv.com/india-news/widows-from-bengal-bihar-stay-there-why-crowd-vrindavan-hema-malini-667204Subscribe to Naatak Radio on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Jio Saavn or wherever you get your podcasts. A 73-member Union Council of Ministers led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi took oath on the 9th of June. A vast majority of BJP ministers have been retained even as about half a dozen Cabinet slots have been given to allied parties in the NDA government, the first since 2014 where the BJP doesn't have a majority of its own. So, what kind of government are we looking at? Will the BJP's divisive plans of one nation, one election, a Uniform Civil Code or taking over mosques in Varanasi and Mathura be jettisoned? Or will the anti-Muslim speeches delivered by Prime Minister Modi during the election campaign be taken as the governing philosophy of the NDA government? Interestingly, not a single Muslim has found space in the 70-plus Council of Ministers. Joining us to delve into these questions is author and journalist Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay, an expert in BJP and Modi's politics. Guest: Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay, political journalist and author. Host: Amit Baruah, Senior Associate Editor, The Hindu. Edited by Jude Francis Weston
