Good morning Horners! The Vikings needed a victory over the Dolphins, and that is what they did. The team from Miami traveled north with a 7-6 record to take on the Vikes with their 6-6-1 record. The Purple failed to beat a team with better than a .500 record until Sunday. Daily Norseman's own leader and Grand Poobah, Christopher Gates, joined Drew Bunting and David Stefano for the immediate, after the game recording of Good Morning Gjallarhorn. Did that victory feel good or what?! We all had just witnessed the Minnesota Vikings soundly defeat the Miami Dolphins 41-17. In a game where the home team took an early 21 point lead in the first quarter under new offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski, everything seemed to be right in the world. It was looking like Mike Zimmer's decision to fire John DeFilippo was correct and didn't come soon enough. The offense was moving with ease, play calls made sense and yet weren't predictable, and even the offensive line was having its way. It was a glorious feeling. And then… Things returned to normal. Kirk Cousins turned the ball over with a horrible pick 6. The offense seemed to go into its defeatist funk after making a major mistake followed by a series of 3 and outs to cap off the half. Drew asked Chris what his opinion of the Vikings $84 million man was. Then came the second half. Miami, on its first play from scrimmage, had a second string running back, Kalen Ballage, take it 75 yards to the house. The game that was a runaway after the first quarter was now 21-17 and you could hear a collective, "here it goes again" out of Vikings fans. The difference this time, however, was that the team did overcome that psychological letdown and went on to dominate. Outstanding defensive performances from virtually the entire defense were put in. The team came away with nine sacks almost tying the team record of 10. Anthony Barr and Danielle Hunter both had 2 each, and the squad shut down the Fins holding them to 10 yards total on the next 26 plays. Not to be outdone, the offense started to pour on the coals scoring an additional 20 unanswered points. Dan Bailey was perfect on the day with seven kicks. There were 5 touchdowns scored spread around 4 players. Two by Dalvin Cook, one from the Latavius Murray, one Cousins pass to Stefon Diggs, and the other the prettiest pass from Kirk this season to Aldrick Robinson. The run game was emphasized and worked (220 yards) to open up passing options. It was a good day! The Daily Norseman and the Climbing The Pocket Network have worked together well, and part of that is due to the fact that Christopher Gates runs such a fantastic site for Vikings fans everywhere. Good Morning Gjallarhorn Episode 029 – Gnome More Mistakes   Good morning Horners! It's Lions week, or when this comes out actually game day. Ted Glover, Drew Bunting, and I get together and preview what should be a fun-fest held within US Bank Stadium as our Minnesota Vikings take on the Detroit Lions.   In this episode, we talk about getting things right, like getting selected to win a gnome. We talk about no more mistakes. The Vikings, due to their own play, which has included mistakes in various aspects of the game, be it by players or by coaches, absolutely have little to no room left to make any mistakes if they wish to make the playoffs. A good example of this was the time management issue during the New Orleans Saints game. Norse Code’s Arif Hasan, asked Coach Zimmer about this. This plays into some midseason grades that Drew asks Ted and me to give.   Looking ahead to the game, we talked about the impact of Detroit trading away one of their best receivers, in Golden Tate. He always used to be a thorn in the Vikings side just about every time they played the Lions. He is now gone leaving only Marvin Jones Jr and Kenny Golladay as the two only viable receivers for Matthew Stafford to throw to. Stafford has all the talent in the world but is inconsistent at times, just like our own Kirk Cousins can be, but has seemed to have pulled rabbits out of his hat when it comes to beating the Norsemen in their home stadium. Drew brings his normal bird’s eye view of the stats, and suggest that will be easily able to run against this team. It’s looking like Dalvin Cook is likely to return to play, and Latavius Murray is running well, so this could very well be the case. We are still looking forward to production from Adam Thiel and Stefon Diggs. Diggs however, has already been ruled out for the game with a rib injury he suffered while landing on the ball last week. Aldrick Robinson has stepped up and caught touchdowns just about every time he's been on the field, that will have to continue Sunday as he is expected to get more playing time.   Even though the Lions traded away Golden Tate, they traded and got the week before, Damon "Snacks" Harrison to sure up their defensive line and beef up their run defense. The Vikings interior three, are going to have their hands full with that big man. This is the point where the rubber hits the road and the team must respond under the pressure. Vikings fans will be looking forward or hoping for, a convincing win just like in the old days when Dick the Bruiser and Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka were tearing it up in the ring.   On the show, you have heard Drew talk about his playing days not only in football but as a rock bassist. Hello 49ers Faithful. It’s official. Jimmy Garoppolo will start Sunday against the Chicago Bears. Kyle Shanahan informed his quarterbacks earlier today. When C.J. Beathard left Sunday’s game with knee and hip injuries, Garoppolo came in and dazzled. He was in for three plays, but those three plays were a four yard scramble, a nine yard pass to Aldrick Robinson, and a 10-yard TD to Louis Murphy. Like I said, he dazzled. With Beathard getting beat up week after week and not being 100%, it is no surprise that Shanahan has decided to see what Garoppolo can do. For his career, Garoppolo is 65 of 96 for 708 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions. Here we go. Kyle Shanahan told reporters after practice that Reuben Foster is the team's starting weak side linebacker. Dontae Johnson opened practice with two impressive reps in coverage. He kept up with Marquise Goodwin on a go route and later broke up a pass intended for Aldrick Robinson. The defense was dominant for most of practice. Eric Reid and Pita Taumoepenu each had two sacks on the day. Ahmad Brooks, Tank Carradine and NaVorro Bowman also had a sack on Tuesday. Bowman's solid day also featured a pass breakup in coverage of Carlos Hyde. Rashard Robinson had great coverage of Goodwin and Pierre Garçon. - Garçon got his revenge against Robinson with a touchdown reception in the left corner of the end zone. The 49ers will get their first game action under Kyle Shanahan when they head to Kansas City Friday night for their exhibition opener. The expectations were moderate when the 49ers traded into the third round of the NFL draft to take Beathard. But his play during the offseason and training camp has caused his stock to rise. The spotlight on Foster became brighter once Malcolm Smith was placed on injured reserve last weekend with a pectoral injury. Taylor earned the nickname “Toe Tap” from fellow receiver Aldrick Robinson for his array of highlight catches throughout training camp. Friday night will be fans’ first opportunity to see the pint-sized receiver carry over his strong start to his pro career in a game setting. Atlanta's backfield tag-team of Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman combined for 296 yards and four touchdowns, leading the Falcons to a 45-32 shootout victory over the New Orleans Saints on Monday night. Here's what we learned: 1. Matt Ryan is flourishing in his second season under play-caller Kyle Shanahan, leading the league in yards per attempt (9.4) and passer rating (119.0), while ranking near the top in completion percentage and first-down efficiency. Although ESPN analyst Jon Gruden attributed the dramatic improvement to mechanical tweaks and Ryan's mastery of the offense, it's hard to ignore the influx of speed and playmaking ability with a healthy Tevin Coleman and the new wideout trio of Mohamed Sanu, Aldrick Robinson and Taylor Gabriel complementing All-Pro Julio Jones. 2. The 2015 Saints defense produced the worst metrics Football Outsiders has recorded going back to the start of the 21st century. Minus a half-dozen starters from the projected opening-day lineup, they had no chance of containing Ryan's offensive attack. Among the options to choose as emblematic of New Orleans' undermanned defense: undrafted rookie cornerback Ken Crawley trying in vain to hang with Julio Jones on an end-zone fade and former Pro Bowl safety Jairus Byrd collapsing into a heap on separate sharp cuts from Devonta Freeman. 3. Much to the bane of fantasy footballers, the Freeman-Coleman committee attack isn't going away. Nor should it. Between Coleman's game-breaking speed to the edge and Freeman's uncanny agility in tight spaces, Shanahan can keep defenses guessing in pick-your-poison fashion. Atlanta's committee is poised to overtake the 2015 Tampa Bay duo of Doug Martin and Charles Sims as the most effective complementary tandem in the league. If David Johnson has represented a tier of his own in September with Adrian Peterson injured and Le'Veon Bell suspended, Freeman isn't far behind. His performance the past two weeks has been All-Pro caliber.
