The Bengals defense is so bad that fans are actually starting to turn on Joe Burrow, all because Joe Flacco is balling out. We talk about how fast Cincinnati could turn Burrow into the next Carson Palmer if this keeps up. Mookie hijacks the show more than once, first by traumatizing everyone while breaking down Jayden Daniels' injury, then by repeatedly forcing in his NCAA Dynasty highlights and replaying ScottSki45's stat of the day. Tom Brady casually dropped that his new dog is a clone of the one he had with Gisele, the NFL Trade Deadline was a dud, and the first College Football Playoff poll dropped while we were live. Auburn tipped off Hugh Freeze's firing by canceling his usual Sunday tee time. Meanwhile, college programs have now passed $1 billion in coach buyouts since the CFP started...and Congress is talking about salary caps. Then we dive into the World Series: one of the best we've seen? We debate the defining moment: • Ground rule double in Game 6 • Rojas to Smith at the plate • Pages crashing into Hernandez for the catch to force extras Plus Sip/Chug/Drainpour for the worst series-losing moments ever, the fan who brought a spare ball to fake a throwback and now wants $2.5M for a pair of Game 7 homers, college basketball is back, a women's player goes viral for point 67, flopped injury dunks, and more chaos to close it out. The year was 2002. The price of gas was roughly a $1.19 a gallon, a dozen of eggs were under a dollar and the biggest hits in Hip Hop was "Getting Hot in Here" by Nelly and the song from the movie Eight Mile "Lose Yourself" by Eminem. In the world of college football, the Miami Hurricanes were coming off of a national championship run and were looking to continue their 22-game winning streak, a streak that seemed to have no end in sight. However "The U" was beginning to hear rumbles from other programs looking to knock them off of their lofty perch. In this episode of the podcast, we will travel back to the year 2002 in College Football in our first episode of the series we call "A Year in the League" where we talk about all of the headlines, best teams and memorable moments that made that season so memorable. In addition of the Larry Coker coached Miami Hurricanes, there were other teams that included the USC trojans that were on the rise who were led by head Coach Pete Carroll and quarterback Carson Palmer who went on to win college footballs most coveted trophy. Another team that was making noise in college football that year was Oklahoma who had returned to glory after years of struggle that followed the exit of their legendary coach Barry Switzer and also will revisit one of the most improbable finishes in college football that fans have called the "Bluegrass Miracle". Yet that season climaxed in the desert of Arizona in the Fiesta Bowl when a team with a second year coach and a freshman running back pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year in one of the best national championship games ever and brought a national title to a place that hadn't celebrated one for more than a generation. Later in the show, we'll send a shout out to all of the schools in our home state and what they did in that season of 2002 including our alma mater who won their rivalry game for the ninth time in a span of 10 seasons. To contact the show, send us an e-mail at Historically.Speaking.Sports@gmail .com Mentioned in this episode:Sports History Network Theme SongThis theme song was produced by Ron "Tyke" Oliver of Music Meets Sportz https://sites.google.com/view/sportsfanztastic/sports-history-network?authuser=0
On Off The Bench and The Stone Shields Show today we discuss the Reds crushing loss to the Pirates last night, Paul Skenes vs. Hunter Greene tonight, the latest Bengals news and more! Off The Bench is back weekdays from 10a to 11a followed by The Stone Shields Show from 11a to noon! In a gut-wrenching setback for Cincinnati's playoff dreams, the Reds fell 4-2 to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night at Great American Ball Park, snapping their five-game winning streak and dropping them a full game behind the New York Mets for the NL's final wild-card spot. The loss couldn't have come at a worse time, with only a handful of games left in the regular season and the Reds clinging to faint postseason hopes. The game unraveled early for Reds starter Brady Singer, who imploded in the second inning, surrendering four runs on five hits—including a two-run homer from Pirates shortstop Oneil Cruz—that chased him after just 1.1 innings. Singer's command faltered, ballooning his season ERA to 3.95 and leaving Cincinnati in an early hole. Pittsburgh's Johan Oviedo, making his eighth start, steadied the ship for the visitors, allowing just two runs over five innings despite a shaky Reds lineup. Cincinnati clawed back briefly when sparkplug shortstop Elly De La Cruz crushed a 415-foot two-run homer in the bottom of the second, his second blast in as many games after ending a 43-game drought. But the Reds' offense sputtered thereafter, stranding runners in key spots, including a bases-loaded threat in the sixth snuffed out by rookie reliever Hunter Barco's debut gem. The bullpen held firm, but it wasn't enough against a Pirates squad playing spoiler. Tonight's game (6:40 p.m. ET) pits two of baseball's brightest young arms in a must-win for Cincinnati: Reds ace Hunter Greene (7-4, 2.74 ERA) versus Pirates phenom Paul Skenes (10-10, 2.03 ERA). Greene, the flamethrowing righty, has been lights-out lately, fanning 10+ in four of his last five starts, but faces a tall order against Skenes—the 2024 NL Rookie of the Year and Cy Young frontrunner—who's chasing a sub-2.00 ERA in his final outing. Expect triple-digit heat, high drama, and a low-scoring affair that could swing the wild-card fate. Amid the baseball buzz, Cincinnati sports mourns the tragic loss of Bengals legend Rudi Johnson, who died by suicide at 45 on Tuesday, per police reports. The fourth-round pick (2001) became a Pro Bowl powerhouse, holding the franchise single-season rushing record (1,458 yards in 2005) and ranking fourth all-time with 5,742 yards. Teammates like Carson Palmer hailed his "joyful presence," while Chad Johnson tweeted a heartfelt tribute. Bengals president Mike Brown called him a "dear friend" and "excellent running back." Johnson's foundation aided local causes, leaving a legacy beyond the field. RIP, Rudy—your spirit endures. Music from #InAudio: https://inaudio.org/ Track Name Holy (Trap). Host Aaron Freeman is joined by one such skeptic in today's guest Derrik Klassen (@BleacherReport) to explain why he doesn't love Penix's fit in the Sean McVay-derivative offense expected to be employed by Robinson.Later, they discuss Penix's willingness to attack the middle of defense as opposed to throwing over the middle of the field. They discuss comparisons for Penix including Matthew Stafford and Carson Palmer, before diving into concerns about his mechanics, footwork, and whether his strengths like his arm talent and aggressiveness as a passer will offset those issues down the road. Hour 1 The Knicks lost their first game of the season as Kristaps Porzingis went off against his old team. We also lost the Marconi Award for Major Market personality and WFAN lost in the Sports Station of The Year category. The Knicks missed a ton of free throws last night. Gio said this will be the Knicks. Good enough to hang with the great teams, but not enough to beat them. BT & Sal got into it with Carl Banks yesterday about Kayvon Thibodeaux and Sal ended up cutting him off. Jerry is here for his first update but first Joanne called in. She is a listener and we met her yesterday at The Ear Inn in Manhattan. Jerry has sound from last night's Knicks season opening loss. The Nets also lost their season opener, 114-113. It looks like Daniel Jones is not going to play again. Sauce Gardner will play and Boomer is still calling it a ‘squash spot'. Brady Quinn called Deshaun Watson a trust fund kid but taking the Browns money and not playing. In the final segment of the hour, Funhouse went and found every pooch punt Boomer had in his career. Hour 2 Quarterback injuries continue to mount in the NFL. Both Brock Purdy and Jalen Hurts could miss playing time. Purdy is in concussion protocol and there seems to be some secrecy with Hurts' knee injury. Andrew Thomas has to come back for the Giants, even more so than Daniel Jones.
