Episode 308 - A Long Distance Dedication, Shedding A Tear For Snuggles RUNDOWN Mitch and Hotshot Scott, travel through Grand Island, Nebraska, the birthplace of Henry Fonda and home to the Nebraska State Fair. From "On Golden Pond" and TV personality Dick Cavett, to "American Top 40," the guys reminisce on some true icons such as Casey Kasem. The Seattle Seahawks' recent performance against the Atlanta Falcons 34-14 takes them to first place in the NFC West. Highlights include Gino Smith's performance and his ability to evade pressure and make key plays. Diving deeper into the Seahawks Falcons blowout, Mitch, Jacson, and Brady discuss the improved performance of the Seahawks' defense, which held the Falcons to just 14 points despite allowing over 150 yards rushing and struggling with tackling, especially against Falcons' running back Bijan Robinson. The Seahawks' defense also created key turnovers, including a game-changing strip sack and defensive touchdown. Mitch and CBS College Football Analyst Rick Neuheisel discuss Alabama's struggles, though Rick maintains his confidence in their ability to reach the SEC Championship game, acknowledging they'll need to avoid turnovers and rely on defensive leadership. He also addresses Texas's recent loss, suggesting they need to prove themselves after facing tougher competition. The conversation shifts to officiating, with Rick expressing frustration over inconsistent calls and advocating for a centralized officiating system for college football. Rick also comments on the Army-Navy rivalry, noting the possibility of the teams playing back-to-back in the AAC Championship and then the Army-Navy game, which he finds unusual. Mitch and Christian Capel discuss the University of Washington Huskies' football season under Coach Jedd Fisch, focusing on their 4-3 record. The conversation touches on Fisch's coaching style, which Christian describes as more professional and NFL-like compared to former coach Kalen DeBoer. They also address Fisch's open comments on NIL deals and the financial disparities between schools like Ohio State, Oregon, and others. Alex Green lost football, then he almost lost his life. The former NFL running back shares his chilling story with Go Long on our latest Happy Hour session. This may be our most compelling yet with Green, the ex-Packer, detailing his descent into a gripping addiction to alcohol, weed and cocaine. In harrowing detail, he relives the night he nearly overdosed.Thank you to those who joined the Zoom call and brough such excellent questions. As a reminder, these are always open to our paid subscribers. Is there a former player you'd like to hang out with? Let me know at golongtd@gmail.com.Green was exceptionally transparent, expanding on everything he initially revealed in January 2022. Audio and video is above, and available everywhere you access podcasts, including Apple, Spotify and YouTube. * Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley gunning for his torn ACL in those Packers/Lions games. (Who would've thunk it?!)* After tearing up defenses at Hawaii, Green was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the third round. He was surprised himself. Football stories are shared sporadically, including the (now hilarious) night Green and DuJuan Harris watched their employer draft Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin. They knew they were toast right then. * Jets Football wasn't real NFL football. * His fall. Once Green finished with the NFL and CFL, he slipped into a cycle of “depression, anxiety, a lot of fear.” He became somebody else, coping with the anguish by filling his body with drugs. He cut people out of his life. He became a total recluse heading down a very dark path. In his mind, drugs became a “best friend.” Specifically, cocaine. * Hopelessness eventually set in. Staring at a mountain of cocaine, one night, Green was prepared to overdose and end his life. (“It's right there. You're that close.”) With one message — I need help — one conversation saved his life, then changed his life. The fact that this text message reached the right person is a miracle itself. He explains. * Transforming his life was not possible overnight. Eliminating suicidal “ideations” and discovering meaning in his life has been gradual. He's still working at it. But Green wants to help everyone he possibly can. * We take the conversation big picture. Green knows many former players deal with the same emotions. The pain can be both physical and mental when the cheering stops. Similar conversations/features at Go Long, icymi: * The Fight for Erik Kramer's life * What happened to Kevin Kolb?* The Majik Man's Final Comeback * Ryan Leaf wants to save NFL players' lives * The impossible life of LeRoy ButlerOur two-part series on the Chicago Bears & Caleb Williams: * Part I: All falls apart* Part II: 'Mini Mahomes'Go Long is your independent home for longform journalism. Trading the Titans baby blue for the Ravens purple was no easy move for this superstar running back, but a quick reminder of where he came from made the adjustment smoother. Derrick Henry's grandmother took care of him for most of his life, so when he took the stage in Baltimore wearing a violet suit, it was an homage to the woman and family that helped him get to where he is today. King Henry sat down with Ryan, Channing and Fred to talk about his iconic career and the moments that shaped the player, and person, he is today. From high school records to a Heisman Trophy at Alabama, Derrick Henry has excelled at each level of the sport, but he provides insight on how hard that truly was. The era of the old-school running back has seemingly been dismissed, but Derrick's running style has provided results since 2018. The big-time player touched on the state of the position in the NFL as well as the importance of teams running the ball. At Yulee High School in Florida, Derrick put up rushing stat lines that don't even seem real. Whether it is rushing the ball 57 times in one game or putting up over 500 scrimmage yards in a single performance, the game came easy to him. That changed when he got to college. The Alabama Crimson Tide have been a running back factory under Nick Saban, with players like Mark Ingram, Eddie Lacy and Trent Richardson making their mark. Yet most people, including the Pivot guys, point to Derrick as the best Bama back ever. Henry talked about his recruiting process and the adversity he faced under Saban before flourishing during his 2015 Heisman Trophy-winning season. The second round pick to the Titans was stuck behind Pro Bowler DeMarco Murray for two seasons, and when he finally got his opportunity to become a starter, he did not prepare the way he should have. One day in 2018, though, he spotted a bunch of butterflies during practice, his grandmother's favorite, giving him the extra motivation he needed and sparking one of the best 5-year runs of any player this century. He may be humble, but Derrick Henry turns into a machine on the field, running through, around or over any defender in his way. He has gone through dark times at different stages in his life, coming out stronger from each one. Although his grandmother passed away in 2016, he still carries the memories and lessons she instilled in him. So when he puts on the Baltimore purple this fall, it will mean much more than just a game. In the podcast edition of this episode, I went over the moments and reflected on what was a terrific time in Green Bay Packers history.
